Even with this new Poster leak or whatever, Sonic looks wrong. It just looks wrong.
I don't get why making the movie animated/stylised automatically pigeonholes it as a film for 7-8 year olds.
I mean who the fuck is going to look at that poster and thing "yes, this is perfect to take my 16 year old child to go see". This is the exact type of movie which will be watched primarily by parents and their young children, die-hard Sonic fans, or people in their mid-late 20s who are in it for a laugh. This is Smurfs, except we got Sonic now. And to make it worse, the edgier the story tries to be, the more ridiculous and meme-y the film will become.
In trying to be taken seriously, this film will almost certainly be not taken seriously.

This is a really egregious comment to be perfectly honest. As someone has already stated, just because they've been doing something for 20 years, doesn't mean its good. Takashi Iizuka has been working on Sonic games since the franchise's inception way back in 1991, and you can bet there are plenty of people on this very forum who question his ability to take this franchise forward in a positive direction.
The design is trash. Maybe the story will be good? Who knows, but I have my doubts. But ultimately a lot hinges on the character design and it just is not a winner. It is quite literally a meme. Its fucking been 2 days and its a meme. A joke.
Yes. I didn't watch much TMNT, still thought the live-action designs were absolute trash. It looks like a guy painted blue wearing a mascot head. And more to the point, if myself or anyone else didn't know what Sonic looked like in the game, this very forum (and countless others) would not exist. And neither would this movie actually, cause it wouldn't have been popular enough to receive this kind of Hollywood punishment......That might actually be preferable to the current outcome now that I think about it.
This is a forum. A forum for fans to discuss things. I know people who work in VFX. Most of the time, they just do what they're told. The reality is, the film producers will send out a bunch of VFX work to a bunch of small studios to do. That could be character/creature work, foliage, structural or vehicular designs. The VFX artists come up with concepts and models and present to the client for feedback. Sometimes they have to start over cause some idiot fuck executive changed their minds late in production. Those guys, I sympathise with. But similarly I don't blame any of them. They're just doing what the client wants, whether or not they personally approve of the design they're bringing to life. The people I blame for this monstrosity, are the higher-ups in production who specified and okayed this horrific design. They're to blame for this, and I reserve my rights to criticise the fuck out of them for it.
Then why did they allow it to be made? What kind of fucking moron signs away the rights to interfere and/or shape the direction of the first major Hollywood production of their marquee franchise. The franchise that is inexorably linked to their goddamn identity. Who allows this to happen? SEGA are straight up said to have not liked the design at all, but the production team was like "Well, we think this is the best approach so deal with it". They allowed themselves to be put in a position where they can only watch on in horror as this film is produced. They have nobody but themselves to blame for it.
Frankly, I think a movie wasn't even needed. But if it was, they should have been overseeing it every step of the way. If they lack the resources or even the fucking commitment to oversee it, it shouldn't have been made. What we're seeing here could ONLY have happened under these exact circumstances where Hollywood are allowed to get away with focus testing an iconic design into oblivion.

SEGA was always the problem. Short-sighted as fuck. The insane production schedule of the PS2/GCN/XB era that culminated in a development environment so toxic that the Franchise's founding fathers all saw fit to leave to regain their spark and love for video game development. Now its the bizarre and pointless attempt at segmenting the franchise; chopping it up into exceedingly disparate pieces while simultaneously clinging to nostalgia of past greatness. And of course, allowing a Live-action movie to be made? Live-Action?
That too after we got Night of the Werehog; a lovingly crafted animation which I'm sure left a few people clamouring for a Pixar style animated adventure. But instead of using their own Animation studio to pursue this, they ship it off to fucking Hollywood and allow a goddamn Live-action movie to be made?

    Yeah, denial, usually.
Everybody here is fully aware that we have not seen the design in full detail yet. But, we can still make out a lot from a backlit silhouette and a picture of his legs, and for the most part people seem really, really put off by it. And no amount of insisting that people wait and see is going to stop people from judging what they can already see. That's exactly what teasers like this are designed for, it's exactly the same thing you yourself do when you decide that you like the design except that they're coming to a different conclusion, and there is no obligation for them to withhold judgement just because you don't like the conclusion they've come to.
And when the full design is revealed, people will judge it and reevaluate their thoughts, regardless of whether they liked what they saw in the teaser or not. Maybe some people will change their minds and decide that they're fine with it. But that seems like real slim odds, because the things they don't like about the design are still going to be there, and the failure to make the design appealing in silhouette doesn't give much confidence that they can make the rest of the design look good.

So many franchises would kill to have what Sonic had. There was enough good will under the belt of this series to last him a millenium. You don't get to fuck up this hard this often and still stick around if the makings of something truly incredible with the potential to last pretty much forever wasn't there in some manner.
So much of that has been squandered away with each new thing they do. Sometimes they'll accidentally find people who know what they're doing to work on their shit. They'll find an Ian Flynn to write their own characters better than they currently could. They'll find a Taxman to make a good 2D game that fans would readily call Sonic 4 over the actual Sonic 4 the company made. They'll find a Tee Lopes who can make really good music for Classic Sonic and not that weird, chicken-scratch synth from the Green Hill Zone in Forces. There's probably even someone out there, right now, who has the skills to make a good 3D Sonic game that's just waiting to give themselves over to them for the sake of the franchise. Even Sumo Digital, despite TSR's shortcomings, are still impressing me more with their ability to create spin-offs for them, despite the ones working on TSR being a group of newbies to this Racing series.
However, the overabundance of incompetence from their end just makes it too much of a once in a blue moon situation. Sonic Team is incredibly passionless now. Watching the SGB playthrough of Sonic Unleashed is really putting into perspective just how much Sonic Forces didn't give a shit when it came to level design and presentation. They hand off their shit to people who don't know what the fuck they're doing or meddle with their projects in ways that don't help or don't make any sense. Hearing all the horrible decision making that SEGA had a hand in behind Big Red Button's development of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric made me feel sorry for the man in charge of that development team. And now here comes along Sonic-Man, out from Sonic 06, to bare his ass in theaters nationwide in an example of them not interfering making things worse.
It's like they suck at doing anything. When they meddle with someone they make things worse. When they don't do anything they make things worse. It's almost as if they don't know when to do which.
If Taxman and the team he worked with are good at making a game, don't force them to put in Green Hill and Chemical Plant so that the only major complaint people had with Mania was an idea that came from the incompetent side of corporate.

If Hollywood's turning your gaming icon into an abomination, step in and keep that from happening. I was already shocked when I heard in one of the Iizuka interviews for Sonic Boom that it hurt him to see the characters get redesigned the way they were but now this? Aren't you guys in charge? Did you feel you had no choice? Were you convinced that turning Sonic into something you hated and thought looked like shit was going to be what salvaged him?
It's no wonder Forces was just an amalgamation of "Shit we think the Sonic fans like".
Someone, somewhere once said they liked Wisps, Classic Sonic, 2D, 3D, Characters, Darker Stories, Light-hearted stories, Serious villains, Deviantart, Green Hill, and Chemical Plant so we're just gonna get the Swedish Chef to toss all of that shit into a blender, regardless of the original context for these concepts, and expect it not to clash at all.
It all comes down to me just yelling "Get your shit together" over and over again into the ether. At this point, they're not going to. It's even more far-fetched that Sonic will be given away to someone who could take better care of him.
I'll always love the Sonic series. The corporate entity in charge of overseeing him though? Nope. No love lost there. I feel for the people on the bottom rung who probably want to work to make Sonic good but can't because the structure of this thing is too fucked for them to do anything about it. These people in charge are fresh out of the benefit of the doubt from me.
I'm just so confused. In what reality does one look at this fucking circus and not try harder to fix it? You're out of passion, you're out of sincerity, you're out of ideas, and eventually you'll be out of time.

You know, this whole "stop overreacting, Sonic can survive anything" mindset only works in the parallel universe where every new Sonic project has standards and expectations reset to zero and past fiascos automagically no longer exist.
Can you name the last time a Sonic game sold more than one million copies worldwide? How about two million copies worldwide? What about three million?
Sonic Boom, launched in late 2014, was supposed to be a reinvention of the Sonic brand for new audiences. We're at the end of 2018, where has that venture gone now?
If the Sonic series proceeded to put out at least one monumental disaster every year for the next five years, back to back, do you really think that the franchise would still be getting any new games? Or any new projects at all?
The reality we live in has a fascinating concept of having people gradually stop supporting products they don't think is worth their time and money--from the critics that review them, to the consumers that pay for them, to even the producers that fund them. Even juggernaut franchises that are "too big to fail" eventually get caught up in some sort of backlash and start feeling the effects.
You know would what would be better than being able to survive putting out trash? Not needing to survive the results of putting out trash in the first place. And you can easily accomplish that by not putting out trash.
Stop framing the series' inability to ingloriously implode after constantly churning out terrible projects as something we should be grateful for. Hundreds of other series have managed that just fine without continuing to make mistakes, let alone making an outright bad product in the first place.

Making Sonic's design more realistic will always play against itself and never makes sense, period. You committed to make Sonic closer to a realistic hedgehog, okay, fine. But hedgehogs don't wear sneakers. Neither are blue or speak english. The whole concept of making him "fit" the human world is wrong, because it will never fit realistically. Like Oshima said, he's a fantasy/cartoon character and should stay as one. Heck, this could've worked well if they based his design on the source material instead of the real animal. Next they're gonna make "Tail" (this ain't a typo) because in the real world, foxes don't have 2 tails, lol

Ignoring any of Sonic Team's output, I'm not very inclined to put stock in SoJ's feelings on the matter because this is the same fucking rope to hang themselves with they gave Archie pre-Penders and Big Red Button. The time to object to the portrayal of their licence that they let someone else handle was a long before principal photography has already wrapped and the film is in post. If they cared so little about looking in on and putting a stop to things even back in preproduction, which is when this design work would have been hashed out, that's their own damn fault.

You don't like that people don't like what you do, even though your basis for liking it is based on just as little as those people? Build a bridge and get over it. You want this place to not become an echo chamber? Express your opinions about why you like it. Maybe they will be challenged, but no one will try to shout you down for having them.

But this complaining about other people thinking what we've seen so far looks like shit? That thing that as far as I can tell is all you and Bucket have been doing here?  That stops now.

None of this makes it immune to criticism. You're free to like the design and you're free to want more of this kind of stuff. I am not. Plenty of other people are not. The memes are already circulating the web. People are already laughing at this. But hey, if you like it all the power to you.
I don't. And I'm not going to stop voicing my tremendous dissatisfaction at this film and the approach. Maybe this movie will be successful like the Fast and Furious or Bayformers. Maybe it will. Success doesn't mean its good though. Plenty of media has been wildly successful, but is still (rightfully) critically panned and even laughed at.
And you don't need to have made a multi million dollar film franchise to criticise things. I mean what have you achieved in the film industry to give your perspective any greater credence than the rest of us? Simply because you're siding with a studio? Come on man.
