If I recall correctly, this is the exact same effect The Witness was shooting for with people seeing line puzzles and circles in every day life, but Overwatch has done it to you with an actual videogame worth £40.

  5. So a query about TSOTS's game design/development that's been bothering me for a while, and I'd like some input on it (spoilered for size):

    Spoiler

So even though I planned for my game to have three playable characters, I'm wondering if I should ultimately cut two of them entirely and focus exclusively on Jessica's path. I'll boil down the various pros and cons I see with this, and I'd like some feedback:

+ Greater focus on Jess means she and her supporting cast can get more character development.

+ I won't have to worry about the other two characters seeming like afterthoughts in comparison to Jessica's gameplay.

+ Levels are easier to design with one character's abilities in mind as opposed to three, and right now only one (Jess exclusive) area is fully mapped out.

+ If I decide to readd alt. characters in a hypothetical sequel, they could be an Elemental (e.g. Lumina and/or Shade) and their abilities wouldn't be as drastically different (they'd still use magic that Jess can use and not bombs/missiles/lasers etc).

+ With only one character to design, program, do sprites for etc., the game can come out quicker.

+ There's one set of minibosses who get destroyed by one character, but then get rebuilt as proper bosses for Jessica. I feel like this connection would be better if only one character (Jess) encountered them.

    - The story is going to require some rewriting; thankfully, not a lot, but Jess's means of getting to Enchantus will need to be changed so it doesn't rely on one of them. However, since Jess isn't a scientist capable of making FTL spaceships...

    - These two have been around since TSOTS's inception years ago, even slightly predating Jess herself. Cutting them seems kind of off to me as a result (kinda silly, I know).

    - Replay value and the game's uniqueness next to other Metroidvania games will probably be affected (though then again, should what gameplay I do have turn out successfully, this may be a moot point).

    -----

There's probably more that I'm forgetting, but I'd like you guys' opinion on this.

      Hyp3hat

Yeah, if this is a passion project, keeping it small would be best - Focus on getting the core gameplay great, tight and focused. If it's not a lot of rewriting, it's a small price to pay for essentially tripling your workload with the balancing issues and level redesign.

If you're attached to the characters, you can still find a way to keep them in the plot without sacrificing gameplay. Good luck!

  8. Since I'm looking to get out of working at a store soon, I'd like to take this moment to say that one of the worst things about it is probably ALL THESE FART KNOCKERS ASKIN ME WHERE STUFF IS

      Hyp3hat

This was one of my least favourite things in working in retail - i worked in a HMV, a big record/entertainment store, so if they asked for X i would walk them over to the appropriate genre, walk towards the right A-Z bit, and then... this shit is all clearly signposted, mate, do you really need me to hold your hand to find a pop cd that starts with this letter? I've been doing this shit since I was 12.

  9. One Path to go and I'll finally be able to reach Last Story in Shadow. Gotta say, playing it safe was probably the worst idea ever, since it made every path a bit repetitive, as I would choose repeated levels instead of annoying ones (Central City, the Doom, Lost Impact etc.).

    1. Hyp3hat

      Hyp3hat

I cannot even begin to think of playing Shadow The Hedgehog again, and I still can't imagine how my teenage self beat it back in the day. Every time I boot it up in Dolphin for the lols I just can't. The terrible shlocky aspects of the cutscenes (which it shares with SA2) are just vastly outweighed by the fact that it feels so horrible to play. Nothing feels fun in that game, it is a wasteland.

  10. Obscure Sonic trivia:

Did you know you can unlock Expert Mode before unlocking The Last Way in ShTH?

Here's how: The game counts both Egg Dealers in Lava Shelter as the same level on the level select and thus the same A-Rank. As a result, if you have 9 endings and the last one is a Lava Shelter ending, you can unlock Expert Mode "early".

  12. Amazing how people are currently telling me that my rights aren't threatened and that no one is going to take away my LGBT rights, ignoring the countless proof layed out by the GOP, trump and pence

    1. Hyp3hat

      Hyp3hat

KHCast is right, marriage rights in the US are going to be at a severe risk because of the homophobia of the VP and the GOP base - Trump works best when fed his ideas through a spoon, as per the several inside looks at his campaign - he will kowtow to his most persuasive associates, and if his associates are Republican, that shit doesn't look good.

It's not going to happen immediately, sure, but over the next 4 years - because the Republicans control the presidency, the house and the senate, maybe even control the Supreme Court - that could be a lot of overturned legislation by the end of it, and a hard road to fix it.

    2. (See 7 other replies to this status update)

  13. Yes, panic, because it's not like we don't have a system of checks and balances so that the president can't screw up the country, oh wait we do. A modern Vice president is supposed to act as political support for the president to help cover the areas he's week in along with the advice of the cabinent(classic VPs were the second runner up canidates and major backstabbers)

    1. Hyp3hat

      Hyp3hat

Said Vice President is Mike Pence, who is (to put it charitably) a huge fucking homophobic cunt. People are right to be scared of both Trump, a vain fascistic blowhard with the finesse and charm of a bowling ball, and Mike fucking Pence, who supports gay conversion therapy.

I appreciate your optimism, but let the people have their despair, yeah? This is indicative of a fucking shit rightwing shift in the west that is going to make our lives suck.

Nah, srsly tho I worked Xmas Eve and Boxing Day once, and the day sort of flies by. Just keep caffeinated, and be prepared to hate everyone and the capitalist society that permits consumer mass hysteria like Black Friday for about 2 hours until you realise that seizing the means of production is a bit harder than it looks.

  16. So right now on Retro we have an ongoing project called the "Sonic Adventure DX '99 edition", the goal is to restore SADX into what it once was the original Dreamcast version of SA1 in terms of looks.

Allot of research and progress is being done towards this goal but one of Retro's members "PkR" found out an interesting tidbit about the graphical regressions in SADX were handled by Sonic Team, take a read:

    Quote

I think I'm getting closer to understanding the motives behind all those horrible graphical regressions in SADX. In general with ported Dreamcast assets I'm running into a lot of transparency issues, such as alpha channels not being handled properly, or objects becoming invisible behind transparent walls. Unfortunately it seems to be an engine limitation of sorts, which apparently was so difficult to fix that the assets had to be remade with this problem in mind. For example, the entire Twinkle Park walkway with glass walls was a single object in the Dreamcast version, but in SADX it was split into several models - large tube, small tube, middle frame and two reflections. Or the crosswalk, which was a solid rectangle that used a texture with an alpha channel on the Dreamcast, while in SADX the object was made into a zebra stripes shape to avoid alpha channel problems.

The reason I thought these changes were made due to an engine limitation rather than aesthetic decisions or whatever is that all of the above problems happen on the GC Preview Prototype in the areas that are still using Dreamcast assets. The Dreamcast GPU was able to do alpha sorting natively so the game code didn't have to take care of it, but this aspect couldn't carry over to other systems where the game was ported. It appears that, rather than fixing the alpha sorting issue, they decided to make all kinds of workarounds or just hide the problem by disabling transparency/removing objects altogether. Pretty much any area in the game that looks noticeably different from DC was most likely made to look that way because there was a transparency issue with original assets. In fact you can still find the problematic areas in the final version - for example, in the beginning of Hot Shelter there are green fish tanks; on DC you're able to see the animated waves if you look high enough, in SADX they just get cut off (but they're actually still there). I guess the reason they didn't bother to fix that was because you wouldn't normally look there anyway (or you wouldn't know what's supposed to be there if you haven't played the DC version).

The transparency issue is a huge obstacle to restoring Dreamcast assets in SADX because the glitchy parts will have to be remade in a way that doesn't make the game look worse. I've already reconstructed the Twinkle Park walkway in Station Square that looks somewhat close to the original, but there are many more areas like that in other levels. Some levels, like Speed Highway or Red Mountain, seem to work pretty well, while other levels, like Hot Shelter, are totally broken. It might be possible to recreate the problematic areas with a negligible loss of quality with some effort, though.

It's so cool that this is being worked on - it also explains something i had casually wondered about with Shenmue II's xbox port having some different textures and objects. Makes you wonder that this, or something like it, is the reason why those games haven't been remastered or ported since release.

The 99 are probably going to think I lead a terribly boring life, and/or wish they were playing GTA instead. Either that or they'll be squabbling enough as to not actually be paying attention to my show.

  20. sonic cd: it either clicks with you and you REALLY love it, or it doesn't and you REALLY don't. them's the beans

    1. Hyp3hat

      Hyp3hat

It's a weird one - I finally got used to it when I decided to knuckle down and beat it, and I really appreciate the fact you can get the good ending without special stages, but it's a strange experiment that goes against what a lot of people naturally do in Sonic.

That said, the amount of bullshit it throws at you when you decide to speed up and time travel is sort of inexcusable, nothing more frustrating than getting up to speed only to be stopped by a block or an enemy coming in off the screen you could barely react to. Even in the first level, in which you may expect it to encourage you to use the time travel mechanic successfully in order to understand it, that stuff is just stopping you constantly. Arrgh.

  23. I like to imagine that Eggman holds Gamma in high regard as the perfect soldier for his robot army due to his skill and obedience, and compares every other mech he's ever made to Gamma with the large majority falling short (especially Omega), ironically never realizing that Gamma had secretly betrayed him.

    1. Hyp3hat

      Hyp3hat

I like to think he sends Orbot and Cubot away to fetch a spanner, fully expecting to have to walk down the hall and get it his goddamn self because they're useless. Before he takes a bite out of his giant sub, he just reminiscences about Gamma...

'I told him to get the frog with the tail, and he did it. First try. I didn't even have to shout at him. No-one had to fall over. There was no sass, or back talk. Why did I start programming my robots to assassinate my character so flawlessly? He even found those upgrades I left for him around the Egg Carrier... Where did he go? Where did I go wrong?'

Then he takes a bite, and the self-doubt dissipates.

'My greatest creation! A robot that can make a perfect BLT sub. The Egg Hoagie. Sonic will never, ever taste a sandwich as good as this.'
