I like to think he sends Orbot and Cubot away to fetch a spanner, fully expecting to have to walk down the hall and get it his goddamn self because they're useless. Before he takes a bite out of his giant sub, he just reminiscences about Gamma...
'I told him to get the frog with the tail, and he did it. First try. I didn't even have to shout at him. No-one had to fall over. There was no sass, or back talk. Why did I start programming my robots to assassinate my character so flawlessly? He even found those upgrades I left for him around the Egg Carrier... Where did he go? Where did I go wrong?'
Then he takes a bite, and the self-doubt dissipates.
'My greatest creation! A robot that can make a perfect BLT sub. The Egg Hoagie. Sonic will never, ever taste a sandwich as good as this.'

@Hyp3hat Same applies for Chibi-Robo!! too.
Because clearly, what most people wanted was another 2D side-scroller (Zip-Lash!!) rather than game that was like the first installment.
Never mind that it was straight out of the horse's mouth (the game's director) that if the game didn't sell, it would be the last of the series...

The sad thing is that Ninty will almost certainly take this as a reason why they shouldn't make any Metroid games for a few years because no-one seems to want them, when the issue is that they should be making good Metroid games that people actually want. Just like Star Fox.

Hyp3hat got a reaction from Alex2Beta in Sonic Mania and Sonic Utopia make me wonder if Sega shouldn't just re-purpose Sonic T
I think both have their place - 'the fans would do it right' sort of supposes that the people who work at Sonic Team aren't fans, or aren't passionate about the work they do.
Also, there are issues and concerns that having a team of experienced games designers, like Sonic Team, on hand helps immensely with. GHP is, by all accounts, sort of a mess (I'm picking on that one because it's supposed to be a 'finished' project, as opposed to Utopia) and its issues could be fixed by having a larger team with experience. Utopia may fall into the same trap of having boring or bad level design, or terrible aesthetic choices and lazy designs yet.
Lastly, if these people worked on Sonic games, they would then be beholden to the same Sega corporate stuff that gave us Lost World, or 06, or the Werehog. And then we'd say, 'Nu-Sonic Team suck, this fan game is much better'. And we wouldn't really have got anywhere. Tax or Stealth or whoever can't tell Sega to fuck off with their dumb idea if Sega are writing the checks (more classic levels than new levels hardly sounds like the dream gig for a fangame developer, after all).
I think Sonic Team can improve, certainly, but I would love a model where SEGA keeps Sonic Team doing what they do and hiring fan developers, giving them support and teams like with Mania for one off projects or spin-off titles. I'd like that future where there's a Mania style release and a Gens/Lost World style release alternating every year or two.

Sonic games that aren't under Iizuka or Dimps direction and done by people who know what they're doing has been something I've been wanting see for quite some time. Hopefully Mania may be a springboard for such a situation like that.
That said, @Blacklightning has a point. Individual Sonic projects like the Rivals series and Chronicles aside, there's a reason SoA --unlike the other two regional branches of Sega-- doesn't even have any of its own development studios anymore in the first place. Sonic Spinball/Kid Chameleon/Comix Zone's STI went under thanks to the Sonic X-treme debacle, and then Sega Studios San Francisco made a failed Golden Axe revival through Beast Rider and was demoted to the shovelware licensed Marvel Studios tie-in games before being given the axe (pun intended).
Even Sonic Team themselves couldn't get it right. The Sonic Team USA spinoff studio back in the early 2000s were responsible console games up to Shadow the Hedgehog while the main studio worked on original projects (Samba de Amigo and Billy Hatcher among others). Unsurprisingly, they both collapsed under their own weights after the main studio released Sonic 2006 and USA made the NiGHTS sequel, USA was folded back into the main studio and since then, they've done nothing but Sonic games (Japan-exclusive Puyo Puyo games notwithstanding).
But with that said, it's worth noting that the current structure / management of Sega isn't what it used to be before. The combined trainwrecks of Aliens:CM and the Boom launch were arguably the collective final straws for SoA's previous state in particular. I'd like to imagine in their current state, they would would be able to make much more competent decisions on the developers they pick and the projects they oversee. And at the very least, getting PWG/Taxman/Stealth on Mania is a good start.

*Made a slight mistake, Sega Studios S.F. made Beast Rider and the first Iron Man tie-in concurrently. They were closed when the second Iron Man tie-in were closed though.

    What Hyp3hat said, basically.
Though I do agree on letting Sonic Team make other stuff besides Sonic. Otherwise, I think it tends to get sort of burned out due to just Sonic all the time, causing Sonic games take a quality drop until the team is purged and replaced to begin the process anew. Plus, look at all the NiGHTS cameos that keep showing up in Sonic games-- I think Sonic Team is dropping some hints there! But what I would really like to see is a new IP from Sonic Team.
