  1. If this is it then I'm actually somewhat relieved tbh. Unless its strictly from a management and/or employee side of things, the last thing Sega needed was some publicized, high profile brand shakeup.

Like outside of Sonic, just continue to release good games. Maybe throw in some of your more legacy franchises if you're feeling kind.

In terms of Sonic... ya know what nvm

    1. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I mean they brought back Streets of Rage, Panzer Dragoon and Sakura Wars. I don't see what's stopping them from bringing back their older stuff that were found of.

      Spoiler

Crazy Taxi only lives on through mobile

  2. So I tuned into the Sonic stream at either the best or worst time depending on your viewpoint.

The chat was asking about the SXSW panel (of course) and Aaron replies with "Thanks for being patient. I mean it's not... it is nothing super crazy so, set expectations..."

Though, he did go on to say that it's in comparison to the other panels (with an emphasis on behind the scenes stuff) so... yeah.

  3. Love how, in SA2, the Live and Learn guitar rift is sprinkled throughout different tracks in the game. Especially how it's placed into the biolizard's boss theme. Nice foreboding of the final boss.

  4. Talk about Scoob has got me thinking here. I doubt this will ever happen because Nintendo's strictness with their characters will probably come to shine in this case but still...

What if, like Scoob, it comes out that Charles Martinet isn't voicing Mario and/ or Luigi in the upcoming film and will instead be replaced with someone else?

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

(this is assuming the movie even has any actual lines in it which, knowing this series, isn't a given but humor me here)

    2. Ferno

      Ferno

Even if Martinet isn't chosen, I only hope that the celeb actor atleast imitates Martinet's voice, which tbh is sorta Mickey Mouse esque in terms of how easy it is for many people to emulate, even if not 100% like Martinet does.

What I DON'T want is for Mario to just sound like a regular guy or whatever. I mean, MAYBE a regular Italian accented voice could work. But yeah.

On the other hand, playing devil's advocate here, I don't want a whole movie where Mario sounds like he did in the 3DS explanation video either. Martinet's Mario voice has always been great in small doses, but sorta off-sounding when speaking full sentences..

    3. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Good point, though idk. I guess I'd just rather see the original VA get the recognition a movie like this brings if that makes sense.

Though I guess a lot of my uncertainty here is that Mario ever really gets to speak like that. It could be jarring for a feature length piece or he could form up for it. Again, I'm not to sure on my end here lol.

    4. StaticMania

      StaticMania

Mario sounds fine in the 3DS explanation video...though as a recent example, he's often scratchy whenever saying sentences higher pitched.

      Aging signs.

He doesn't need to talk too much.

    5. Inkling Cooper

      Inkling Cooper

Mario speaks fully here for longer than the 3DS video: https://youtu.be/G8sYvNtjXRI

    6. Sean

      Sean

I'm not watching a Mario movie without Martinet

    7. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Much as Martinet does a brilliant voice for Mario, it's absolutely awful listening to him do full lines of dialogue. That Mario Sports Mix interview is painful. Could he do better in an actual movie? Dunno. Maybe.

I'm not at all sure what I want to even evict from the Mario movie tbh. It's so hard to conceptualise that I've just not bothered to think about it.

  5. Man, watching the bulk of Nintendo fans turn on the subsection of Paper Mario fans for voicing concerns is something else. Having been on both sides of that coin before, it's sort of like watching a crash video in slow motion. You know what's happening is bad but you just can't look away.

It's even worse when you see that most of the discourse basically boils down to some petty stuff like "Stop talking about things I don't care about." or "It's a new Paper Mario, just be grateful." Also can't count the number of times this image has shown up in my Twitter feed:

    EYEpP9nWkAAKsPN?format=jpg&name=900x900

    1. StaticMania

      StaticMania

Hmm, so the people using that image don't understand that logic doesn't apply to games that aren't actually out yet?

    2. Sean

      Sean

The reductive arguments I've seen toward fans of the old games is tiring. Especially for someone like me who really wanted to like the new games for what they were, but I ended up hating them so much that it wouldn't have mattered if the old games existed or not. They're bad in a vacuum, and there is a lot to criticize them for in a setting completely divorced from PM64 or TTYD. But nah if you don't like them you're just a nostalgiawhore old man yelling at clouds

    3. Thigolf

      Thigolf

I've seen the line misused so often that I actively dislike it now

    4. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Satire like that shouldn't even be in a Mario game honestly. Yeah, we got satire of the series itself with Wario and the Rabbids game, but it's mostly not in Mario's timeless playful nature to poke fun at people and stuff.

    5. Wrapped in Black

      Wrapped in Black

They did the same shit when Nintendo was treating Metroid like the redheaded step child. Just ignore them.

  6. I think the most noteworthy thing to have come from this Paper Mario announcement is the fact that Nintendo just announced a full on first party title like it that literally comes out in 2 months. I honestly can't recall them, hell, any major developer ever doing something like that. Smaller games? Sure, a lot of those even get pushed out the day of. But this situation is rather unique I'd say.

Also sort of opens the door to a lot more... radical predictions for better or for worse. Not to be one of the many baseless rumor over-blowers here, but you have to wonder what else they might be sitting on atm.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Even Nintendo's markerting doesn't give a shit about Paper Mario and knows nobody else will anymore.

    2. Thigolf

      Thigolf

There are very few games that benefit from the insanely long "hype" cycles a lot of games are getting. I vastly prefer the "SURPRISE, it's almost out!" approach.

    3. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

      They've done this before

-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX was announced 2 months before it's release

-Samus Returns was announced 2 months before it's release

-Mario + Rabbids was 2 months before it's release

    4. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

      @Dejimon11

Rabbids was leaked much earlier, and Samus Returns could've really benefited from being announced sooner so there would've been less nagging from Met fans and they could've outright told them they were already making a Metroid 2 remake.

    5. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

Yeah the game was leaked but according to the leaks it was meant to be revealed at E3 and be heavily promoted in July.

    6. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

This is going to be a bit controversial but I don’t really consider two of those to be as, idk, noteworthy. SR was a remake on an already outdated handheld and MD was simply another Pokemon spin-off that was also a remake to boot. M+R though, even with it not really being Nintendo specifically, yeah.

I guess I’m coming from this with the idea that Paper Mario was, at one point, a big thing. Something that you’d never really think of as a “here’s a trailer and it’s almost out” sort of thing. Hell, I don’t really consider that for any rpg series. Honestly, I’d expect that from a Mario sports or even Mario Party title before it.

Though with all that said, this by no means is a bad thing. Really, I hope this isn’t the only title we see over the next bit here that does this. It’s just a bit odd imo.

  7. On one hand, the origami concept is neat af. On the other, literally everything else about this screams Sticker Star 3...

Also, really can not remember the last time Nintendo announced a game this close to release. During a pandemic no less.

    1. KHCast

      KHCast

Idk, was sticker stars plot as unsettling and dark looking?

    2. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Not really, but Color Splash did have elements of this turn already with the blood/color sucking thing. Can't imagine this going much further than that so this is all just seems to be going down the same path to me.

  8. I can rag on Sony and consoles in general all day long but they already have me by the balls with God of War 5 2 and they haven't even announced it yet.

  9. So I’m just now learning that there is apparently a leaked file out there containing an WIP script for Forces with comments from Webber on it. I have no idea if this is legit as it’s apparently been a thing since 2018 and I can’t find the actual file besides a few topics on other sites sharing it’s details but if it is real... holy shit, Aaron tried to warn them with exact notes on what to improve and they literally ignored most of what he said. Bloody hell man.

Does anyone here know more about this (or if it’s even real)? Though don’t link it here if you have it.

    1. Wrapped in Black

This whole thing is a mix of interesting yet kind of sad. Like, if we're truly at the point of people within Sega trying to tell ST to change shit and them not listening... eh.

It's also fun and sad to see how some of these lines came to be. The "that's why it's called war" line was extremely close to being cut, yet somehow remained.

      Finally, someone gets it.

I don't care what anyone says, Justin Hammer was comedic fucking gold and in a better movie where Venko was shown as intended, they would've made brilliant sense.

Both of them are supposed to be darkened reflections of Tony Stark. Venko is a Tony who lost everything and became engulfed in finding revenge for his father's actions, while Justin is Tony if he never underwent development as a character - a snide, egotistical prick. The only difference is that Tony has genius to back it up.

Those shorts are probably the best thing to come out of this generation so far tbh

    2. DryLagoon

      DryLagoon

I honestly might prefer it to getting a full adaptation. It might be shorter but the quality is worth it and fleshes out the characters more than if they had to follow an adventure plot like the main series.

  12. I keep trying to think to myself "Man, I don't really hate LW that much right?" Like, there are some genuinely good ideas in the game that I do hope get brought back (parkour being the main one).

Though, then I think about how the game actively goes against a whole lot of what I love about this series and yeesh... I think I come down on it harder than I do 06 at times.

    2. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I can't, but both games are so trash to me that me trying to defend one over the other nowadays is just tiring. And Forces is very much shit so hey.

    3. Soniman

      Soniman

I used to really defend it hard but time has lessened my opinion and though I don't really hate it...or have any strong feelings about it in general, it's just this weird mediocre game that had so many ideas but couldn't properly flesh out any of them, and I'd like to see some of them get a second shot in the future if Sonic Team ever get their heads out their assets. That being said I still prefer it over Forces despite that game being  more focused.

  14. That new iPhone SE model peaked my interests but now I'm learning that it really isn't that different from my 8 which is disappointing. All it needed was a slightly bigger battery plus 5G support and I probably would've went in on it.

Here's hoping that whatever they introduce in September is enough of an upgrade for me... and that it was the finger sensor.

There was a time when I thought Nintendo was the end-all-be-all and every other console just had, and I'm quoting myself from memory here, "bland, gray and brown games that only care about graphixs" (took HD Unleashed to snap me out of that stupidity)

we always have room to grow

  15. Now that I think of it, most of my favorite games of all time are actually titles I really didn't think much of before I played them.

Like seriously, the only reason I picked up Galaxy was because of the Brawl delay. I didn't actually like Arkham City when my friend first showed it to me. Hell, only played both Halo 3 and Uncharted 2 because they both came with their respective systems for me.

    1. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I straight up didn't care about Galaxy until the month it came out. With Shovel Knight I was following but I really wasn't in a rush to play it. Mega Man X1 I only got on a whim and I wanted to play a Mega Man game, I liked the demo for Bayonetta 2 but didn't buy it a year later.

Didn't know nor care about Portal 2. A friend came over and asked me if I had the game, I said no, they said I should get it.

  16. Ah, hello Gordon!

  17. While I don't take any stock, at all really, on that whole Microsoft buyout rumor... I will say that they are the only one of the big three I'd be even remotely ok with it happening with.

    1. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

After what happened with Rare? Really????

    2. KHCast

      KHCast

A big reason I’m doubtful of this happening, is because Atlus recently said they were going to continue strongly working with PlayStation when it comes to Persona. I can’t see it out of nowhere suddenly becoming a Xbox exclusive series. Atlus is a Japanese  focused company that makes a large amount of its sales from the, surprise, japanese market, which mostly play on PlayStations and switches. Xbox is not that popular in Japan, so that’s a big drop in money for them.

    3. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

We all know it's fake but hypothetically speaking what the hell would Microsoft gain with buying SEGA? Anybody who buys Xbox products don't really buy Japanese games like hell I don't see anybody talking about the Kingdom Hearts collection and Yakuza games that dropped there.  Sony on the other hand would be the best one

      Spoiler

Besides try to turn their games into movies

    4. KHCast

      KHCast

Well tbf the Kingdom Hearts Collections were sold for full price while they were hella cheap for PlayStation users. Nobody was getting scammed out of all that cash

Then again, Sega did do that timed exclusive thing for Phantasy Star Online 2 with Xbox...that could have been a testing ground thing

    5. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

I'd be against the buyout. There isn't much benefit for Sega here, when looking at their divisions.

    6. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

I would honestly hate it if SEGA became a MS exclusive company.

    7. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I feel as though I should stress that I'd 100% rather Sega stay independent.

Though, if there absolutely had to be one, I'd opt for Microsoft in a heartbeat. 3rd party exclusives are a fucking joke that Microsoft is the closes to bucking. Sonic flat out needs to be on every piece of hardware that can run the titles and Microsoft is much more likely to make that happen versus the other two.

    8. blueblur98

      blueblur98

the xbox brand as a whole has been a massive faliure in japan. microsoft buying out SEGA, a japanese company, doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

    9. KHCast

      KHCast

@Strickerx5 none of that addresses that Microsoft financially bombs with it’s versions of Japanese franchise on its system. It’d be a idiotic financial decision for Sega to make with many of its franchises cutting off their main markets.

outside personal biases, there’s no real reason it’s be good to go exclusively on Microsoft’s platform if you had to pick

    10. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

@KHCastThere's no real good financial bases for all three of them. Nintendo supposedly has the largest install base of Sonic fans yet the last ring of games on that front did worst than ever, the slew of technical issues aside. Sony has the biggest install base period yet we've seen time and time again how that never specifically works out in this series favor.

At the end it really comes down to how much money one of them throws Sega's way.

Even then, Microsoft putting out the software on other platforms does indeed help address that. Though, now that I think about it, a lot of Sega's IPs don't even do well in Japan so that's barely even a factor here.

EDIT: Though truth be told I'm only really looking at this from a Sonic perspective. Though yeah bias be damned, I'm still team x

Both Yakuza and Persona’s main financial base is with PlayStation. Microsoft historically hate Sony and do not want to do business with them, as they’re literally their competition. There’s a slim chance they’d opt to allow PlayStation to keep having Persona games show up on their platform, especially considering that would be the main version bought.

Persona also makes a killing in Japan. So that alone would likely be enough to have Sega not wanting to go all Xbox, even if the other Sega franchises don’t do as well in Japan

Plus, wouldn’t this just further complicate Bayonetta’s situation?

    15. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

@KHCastBayonetta as a series is already fucked as far as I'm concerned.

Though, one could really look at this as Microsoft's way of slamming their foot in the door as far as the Japan is concerned. This stupid exclusive mess has sort of left this as one of their only real remaining options. What better way to say "buy a fucking xbox" than to announce both a new Yakuza and Persona as a console exclusive on Xbox? It'd piss everyone off, but hey, every console exclusive does that to one group or more so why the hell not.

And even then, Japan's PC gaming market isn't anything to slouch at. With Microsoft bring most of their games to that platform day and date with Xbox, a large sum of people there might not even be effected by this.

Also no, Microsoft has been putting their titles on Steam for over a year now.

@Dejimon11damn straight, fuck this 30fps console bs

    16. Sean

      Sean

If MS continues to sell games on Steam then you can use Proton to play them on Linux. Dunno about Mac

    17. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

Every Sonic game more or less already comes out on PC around the same time as console anyways, graphic settings and high FPS in-tact. MS taking over the company wouldn't suddenly mean Unleashed or anything past Gens would get a port to PC.

So the only difference it would make is Sony and Nintendo players getting dicked over if they want to play the series.

    18. Sean

      Sean

I think an exclusivity buyout would hurt Sega more than Microsoft. Considering how MS has been operating the last few years I can easily envision a scenario where they allow them to continue publishing games on other platforms. I can't see that happening with Sony or Nintendo

A better way would probably be to make appealing games of your own that people want to buy, instead of just buying and excluding players from a franchise that was available to them unless they stipe up an extra 500 bucks. Relying on buying exclusives is cynical, shitty, and doesn’t push the market to  healthy forms of competition.

Microsoft needs good first party exclusives. If they rely on other companies and buying their products to fill their library, that says more about them more then anything

    20. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

@Ryannumber1gamerIf we're going by that logic alone then Sony getting the series would dick over Microsoft, Nintendo, and PC players. Nintendo getting the series would dick over Microsoft, Sony, and PC players.

Though even then, Microsoft and Nintendo are so buddy buddy nowadays that the Switch would probably get a port very soon after anyways, if not on the same day.

@KHCastNo arguments here lol. Simply apply that logic to Square, Activision, and the others and we'd be golden.

SEGA Sammy is too big to be bought out so this discussion is moot. The most I could see is an exclusive partnership but it's not like it would last forever.

Sony has opened up to releasing their games on PC so you would get that no matter who got SEGA.

    23. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

      @Strickerx5

I fully acknowledge that Sony/Nintendo getting it as an exclusive would do the exact same thing. I'm specifically talking about MS because of the fact that it's the basis of the false rumour, which is why I'm pointing out that PC ports mean little to nothing because we already get that as is.

No company should just buy exclusive rights to SEGA.

    24. KHCast

      KHCast

Only times I can understand buyouts like this is when the company is hemorrhaging and living on a thread. If, say when Capcom was in their financial hole, any of these companies offered to buy them to allow them to continue, (basically what happened with SFV on a grander scale), I could understand that. Outside of that, it’s hard to justify. Even with that konami rumor about PlayStation potentially buying Silent Hill, Castlevania and Metal Gear, even though personally I’d be happy with the games getting a chance at finally getting some good games again, I’d rather we get that situation while still allowing everyone to enjoy them because you’re always dicking over a group when you do these things.

    5. Spin Attaxx

      Spin Attaxx

On the bright side, at least it didn't get the chance to go down in a trainwreck of relationship drama and angst, heavy-handed social commentary, chucking out entire supporting casts, characters acting like idiots for no real reason, and our so-called heroes possibly committing genocide and dooming two whole worlds to an apocalyptic hellish future.

      Spoiler

why yes I still think about how Star vs. sputtered and died, why do you ask

  19. The moon is 👌 right now

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

BTW, can we friggin' stop with all these buzz words for Super Moons, like where are they coming from??? Pink moon, Worm moon, Sturgon moon, do we really need a Full/Super Moon name for each month of the year???

Might as well make one call the Mooning Moon, why don'tya???

    2. Stay at Home Ultima

      Stay at Home Ultima

      Ah dang I missed that

  20. It's always interesting and fun to go back to a game's set of press trailers and see some of that initial hype it had going. Unleashed specifically had an interesting go as you can literally watch the game take shape through them. Like, look how rough everything is in this announcement:

Hell, they were showing unfinished content as late as the Shamar trailer iirc.

    1. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

It's always fascinating seeing how well a game is from it's first trailer to the finished product. See KH3

    2. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Wow, the appearance of the boost was completely different.

And the lighting seemed a bit borked here, especially in Windmill Isle... which looked incredibly unfinished at that time.

    3. Kuzu

      Kuzu

      Ya'll never heard of "bullshots"?

    4. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I dunno, does this trailer even have any "bullshots"? It's clearly just all early WIP content. The level designs changed a lot, and the amount of pop-in the Windmill Isle portion of the trailer would make '06 blush.

Like yeah, bullshots exist and are a standard, shitty practice in the industry (Watch Dogs or literally anything else from Ubisoft, No Man's Sky, Alien Colonial Marines, countless others...) but this trailer doesn't have any. Unless you weren't meaning to imply that this trailer is full of bullshots. Either way, there's a difference between WIP and bullshots.

    5. KHCast

      KHCast

Is the official term bullshots or vertical slice?

    6. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

A vertical slice is supposed to show of as much as possible in a single screenshot. Everything shown may not be possible in one go or not truly representative or any actual part of the game, but every individual aspect of it is real.

A bullshot is just a fake screenshot, crafted to make the game look better than it ever possibly could.

    7. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Though maybe one could see this as a "bullshot" since they're only showing off daytime content and not the werehog

    8. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Eh, not really. It's not a bullshot cause it wasn't making shit up. Unleashed introduced two big new gameplay styles, and this trailer only shows one of them so as not to blow its load all in one go. Like yeah, someone at SEGA with a brain was probably thinking "jesus christ why is the werehog in this game people are going to go mad when they see that gameplay", but you expect them not to show off everything at once. It's like the first trailer for Mario Odyssey didn't show off the capturing feature at all, despite being a huge part of the game's overall identity. They wanted the audience to process the rest of the gameplay first.

    9. Tarnish

      Tarnish

Ah the good old days...when you only saw unfinished stuff in trailers and articles...whereas now that's what you actually get to play as a "finished product".

  21. So yeah, take this as a bit of a warning I guess. TLOU2 is leaking on YouTube...

Word is that it’s due to a disgruntled employee... I’m mixed as fuck right now. If this is the case then, on one hand, with how shity ND has apparently been recently, they probably had it coming. Shit especially sucks because they were one of the last few dev studios I fully loved.

On the other hand though, messing over every artist, programmer, ect. on the game and fans in general who had nothing to do with the crunch is a downright dick move.

    1. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

Either way, it's definitely a sign that Naughty Dog need to clean up their acts if an employee felt THAT disgruntled.

That said, in regards to the employee her/him-self. I get where they're coming from, but it isn't right to ruin it for people supporting the game, dragging them into the fray.

    2. AlphaRuby

      AlphaRuby

Not to mention said employee could get themselves in huge trouble by doing this.

    3. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

All in all, both parties in this problem, Naughty Dog and the disgruntled employee are highly to blame.

    4. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

That sucks. I don't want the game spoiled.

  22. Beastars is really fucking good

    1. Zaysho

      Zaysho

I really enjoyed it. Thinking of checking out the manga because I want to see what happens next.

  23. It still somewhat baffles me that the D6, in LW once you defeat them, just never show up again for the rest of the game.

No final cutscene, no note to end on, just "Arg!" *poof into polygon smoke*

Like Bowser usually gets more than that lol

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Though now that I think about it, Infinite doesn't get a much better end scene either... damn, these last few years man

    6. Jack at Home

      Jack at Home

I still doubt Infinite is gone, he's off limits in IDW. Okay, so is Classic Sonic. But I'd rather focus on improving the D6, that'd be more of a challenge.

    7. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Even Eggman him fucking self dissappears after Force's final boss without a trace

The Eggman, Zazz and Zavok that show up afterwards are all only figments of the Phantom Ruby; the real ones have been long dead now.

In fact, this entire modern timeline is just a Ruby illusion. Any objections?

      Spoiler

yes, I know Eggman's still around in Forces cause of the "99.9% World Peace" thing, be quiet

That was fanwank, moon didn't mean shit

    11. Milo

      Milo

considering how many times the moon got screwed with in sonic games, i'm surprised the moon has never become a villain or a major plot point
