  1. The first half of 2021 has been pretty good to Capcom hasn't it?

    1. Teoskaven

      Teoskaven

Aside from the port to other systems of Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection, what do they have planned for this year?
Unless they have announcements next month during the E3 period.

EDIT: ok, i think MH Stories 2 and the DGS duology launch in the summer, so there is that.

  2. Got around to playing Omens today.

Patreon mess fully aside... this is something. It has a number of issue, especially in the later half, but damn if they don't have something special here.

Voice work could still use some major work though. At least Sonic sounds a lot better than he did in the 2020 demo.

    1. JezMM

      JezMM

Yeah the voice work really bugs me.  It's one of those things where I wasn't sure if I was being kind of a dick to suggest that Sonic characters should only be played by american actors, but it's more to do with the fact that the voice actors clearly aren't american but are TRYING to sound like they are which makes it sound stilted to an english-speaking audience. The VAs do a commendable job with their impersonations of the official actors, but there are frequently lines where they put emphasis on the wrong syllables and reveal that english isn't their first language.

Essentially, while my heart wants to say anyone should be allowed to voice the characters in whatever way they please, the end result of the voicework here falls into the uncanny valley by trying to emulate the official voices and then just missing the mark, making the flaws more glaring than if they had just dubbed it in their own language and provided subtitles.

I feel the same way. I'm currently writing my thoughts out in the topic and sort of had to stop myself from sounding like a jerk when discussing the voice work lol.

      But...

      Really...

Russian Shadow is just... yeah. Commend him and the rest for the effort. I really do. But... yeah lol

  3. Been watching some It Takes Two gameplay. This is probably one of the most creative co-op games I've seen. Sort of insane how many ideas they've fit into one experience.

Always weird and nice to see EA not fuck up a game lol

I mean, Rift Apart looks really damn fantastic after a five year wait. Major new game in the series, the first since...what? A Crack in Time? Writing looks better than the 2016 game, the graphics are nuts, 60fps mode is back, the gameplay looked excellent...

      ...what?

  5. First look at Eternals in here.

A year ago I really didn't think I'd be following Marvel through phase 4... now, I'm hyped for all of this. wtf happened lol

Looking forward to these, no films for a year really threw me for a loop. Captain Marvel 2 now being called The Marvels pretty much confirms Kamala will be in it.

Eternals is honestly my most hyped MCU movie this phase, mainly because it's the one series I'm most unfamiliar with.

  6. Rift Apart looking clean as ever.

... The next Sonic ain't coming anywhere close to this quality.

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

Forces could've looked fantastic if it weren't for the awful blocky world design. When they broke away from that with levels like Egg Gate, it looked stunning.

  7. Saw the Demon Slayer movie yesterday. Was about on par with what I thought of the anime. A few high moment sprinkled in with a whole lot of average ones to make it an overall ok experience for me. But I know I’m in the minority with this with how well this movie did so I’ll leave it at that.

Though, I swear it’s almost like the dub VAs forgot how to make these characters sound natural in the first part of the movie. But, by the last half, they delivered some of the best takes for them yet. Again, was probably just me hearing that though.

Was also weird being back in a theater after a year. Though, admittedly, kind of nice . Especially with having half the theater empty due to COVID restrictions meaning that I didn’t have to sit next to a complete stranger for 2 hours.

  11. It's sorta weird how Sega just hasn't up and announced that Sonic Colors remake already.

Maybe they're saving it because there's more they want to talk about with it?... Nah, that'd be wishful thinking. It's probably just that whole "don't rush out an announcement before your storefronts/ partners are ready" rule.

    1. pppp

      pppp

IDK, I still think it wouldn't hurt to actually announce something. The Nier Replicant remaster was announced around 7 months before its release, Why is it that Sonic fans have to be in this situation where we spend an entire year with nothing being shown to us? I'm sorry but I find that to be piss-poor.

      Teoskaven

Pretty much. It's the same with the supposed collection of Dai Gyakuten Saiban, we got to know about its existance while we weren't supposed to: for all we know the project is still underway and can't be announced yet or worse.

    10. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

Hopefully SEGA will be making an announcement soon. No doubt their plans were affected (perhaps significantly) by the pandemic, but I really hope a reveal is imminent. Maybe a June 23rd reveal (Sonic's birthday) is more realistic, but I'm getting impatient. The sooner the reveal the better IMO.

    11. SBR2

      SBR2

While there hasn't been one announced yet I'm betting there'll be a 30th birthday stream in June where they'll announce a few things including Colors Ultimate.

    12. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I don't think it's particularly strange. SEGA have got plans for how they're going to market this game and anything else going on with the series. The leaks so far aren't particularly huge either; we've got the name and platforms for a remake/remaster, and confirmation of a German dub. I font see why we should be expecting an imminent announcement because of the leak. They'll just brush it off. Same for the Ace Attorney stuff, seeing as it was mentioned. Announcing something sooner than planned because of a leak, especially a minor one like Colours Ultimate in  or a malicious one like Ace Attorney, would set a bad precedent moving forwards.

@ppppI'm as ready for news as anyone else. But I don't think SEGA owes us anything or are treating is in "piss poor" way because of how quiet the series has been lately. The wait has been annoying for sure. We'll see how it turns out in the end. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm so over SEGA forcing out Sonic games. If whatever they're working on is another half-arsed project that's not worth our time, like Forces, I don't have any interest. And if it's an incomplete mess they're rushing out the door to meet their self-imposed deadlines, like a lot of Sonic games but particularly RoL and 06, then I'm also not interested.

Colours Ultimate, whether it's a straight port, enhanced port or remake, is a pretty tame and safe project. I'm mildly excited about it, and a lot of people are REALLY stoked for it. There's not really much to talk about and show off though. It's a decade-old Wii game; we know basically everything it has to offer. Such a project could definitely be announced too soon. I prefer that games are announced between 6 months to a year before they're released, and possibly even closer to release if they're smaller titles like spin-offs and ports (etc). I don't care about drawn out "hype cycles" and would rather the devs spent their time working towards the final build of the game. Show me a product that's an accurate representation of what I'll be buying, and not too long before I can actually buy it. Companies owe us nothing in terms of satiating us with regular news.

    13. SBR2

      SBR2

Personally I didn't really mind the days they'd release a game or 3 every year but I also can't see not immediately shitting one out after Forces (or TSR or whatever they actually worked on last) as a bad thing. It feels like they're actually taking time to develop the next game and hopefully it's worth it.

    14. Inkling Cooper

Kind of surprised no one here has talked about this rating that came up recently for Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania. https://www.classification.gov.au/titles/super-monkey-ball-banana-mania If that's coming this year, that has to be revealed sometime soon as well as well as Sonic Colors.

    15. Strickerx5

I guess my feeling here reflect my overall level of confidence in the end of all this. Now what I'm about to say here will rustle jimmies but like idk, I'm just throwing it out there.

Personally speaking, a Colors remaster after all this time is disappointing to say the very least so the sooner they just rip that band-aid off the better. Possible filler that they have to talk about before we get to something else. I understand it's an off way of viewing all this, but again, this is really the first time my pessimism has been significantly higher than my hope for the series going into any announcement so it's difficult for me to see the glass half full scenario here. Sega doesn't owe us this, of course. But, at the same time, I can't really say I have much patience left with them either.

When there's a high chance that this is literally just an HD remaster of Colors straight up, I just wanna hit the fast-forward button on it all lol

      @Inkling CooperWe have a thread I think...

      Yeah

    16. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I can 100% agree with that. It's approaching four years since Forces, a game that disappointed a lot of people. (And on that note, how did you feel about Forces?) The only game we've had since then was TSR, and it most certainly did not set the world on fire. Disappointing games, lots of nothing for a length of time practically unheard of for Sonic... Yeah. Getting filler after all of that isn't great.

I guess in my mind I've been sick and tired of SEGA's shit for ages. I waited literal decades for a game like Mania; not just a true new Classic Sonic game but also one that almost everyone including myself would look at and agree was really good. Colours and Generations weren't that for me.

And on top of that, I'd been pessimistic and cynical about the series for a long time. Between Mania making feel finally feel vindicated as a Sonic fan (as strange as that is to say) and SEGA getting right back to their usual form of underwhelming games mere months later, I guess I just don't care anymore. SEGA finally broke me. I expect to feel cynical, disappointed and pessimistic about the series. A long wait for a proper new game doesn't mean much when I'm only expecting to be let down again.

The reason that Colours Ultimate merely existing kind of piques my interest is because I'm not used to seeing the series really bother with filler like that these days. Filler means just that; filling up the space whilst something else is taking longer to roll around. That can only be a good thing, in theory, right? I'm not convinced that whatever comes afterwards will be any good. But it's interesting nonetheless to make such an observation.

    17. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

@Blue BloodBefore release I was one of the remaining few pulling for it. After playing it and now, I get more angry with it each time I think about it honestly. I won't go into why I hate it (I think the literal novel-long amount of text on this forum about it says enough) but holy shit did it not just kill my optimism with its bs. It's not the worst Sonic game out there (hell I still enjoy it more than LW but that's like comparing a kick in the groin to a kick in the stomach) but honestly, fuck it lol

    18. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I know, right? Forces isn't the worst Sonic game ever. Far from it. I don't think anyone would be successful in convincing non-fans or more causal fans that it's worse than something like RoL or 06.  In terms of "game quality", I think most people would probably agree that it's nothing too offensive. It's not so obviously bad like any of the more infamous Sonic games.

But when it comes down to how the game makes me feel as a lifelong fan of the franchise? Fuck off. It makes me seethe like nothing else. The only game that I can compare it is S4, but even so my feelings for that game have cooled down significantly over time. Forces almost feels like a targeted, personal attack against me and fans like me. Obviously that's hyperbole, but I actually do hate the game and using the word hate is not hyperbole.

    19. Wraith

      Wraith

Forces isn't thar much worse than Colors/LW to most people but its one of my least favorite Sonic games just because of how little there is for your mind to latch onto, mechanically. I get that ambitious is kind of a buzzword now but literally every other Sonic game is taking a crack at some big new idea aside from maybe Generations.

In this one, they completely gave up on making a game and just made a distraction. Fodder on par with the Nickelodeon stuff i would fire through as a kid between big releases like Sonic.

    20. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Forces is pretty braindead as far as gameplay is concerned. From what we can glean from interviews and such, that much was intentional. The game tries to reward the player for little input. It's kind of an instant gratification thing.

    21. SBR2

      SBR2

Forces is fine IMHO. It isn't the best but I never felt like I was wasting my time playing it and had fun with the Avatar system.

Granted unlike Colors and Generations I've only really played it twice since I got it like 2 years ago.

    22. Dr. Detective Mike

      Dr. Detective Mike

I don't like thinking about Sonic Forces. Everytime I do, it just makes me angry. I suppose its release was vindication in some way. I've always been a strong proponent of the idea that something being technically sound wasn't and shouldn't be the end all, be all for Sonic games. At the time I was saying this, most people (on a dead forum) weren't too concerned because the games were so jank but everything in a game affects a game. It's all important.

I meant that mostly when it comes to creativity concerning level aesthetics and story but even basic things like how to properly handle the reusing of assets they just flub up there.

Casino Forest is obviously just Silent Forest from Lost World with some lights strung up everywhere. I kind of want to like the way it looks but it always looks so off.

Then there's the nameless "City" that had those Lost World style grasslands in the background. People speculated on whether it was the work of the Phantom Ruby molding the areas from Lost World together with the more Generations looking City without the "Escape" but no. They just reused assets from Lost World in a way that clashed.

Then there's the final area. The most uninspired, boring looking Eggman Fortress ever created surrounded by what looks like a JPEG of a baron rocky wasteland.

Yeah, I could go on but as was stated earlier, there's full books on the site about everything wrong with it.

To me, Sonic being bland, boring, and wrote is the worst it can be. I at least thought Lost World was "interesting".

  12. I know every generation will say "man, cartoons back in such-and-such date were unreal" but man... thinking about 2002-06 cartoons just hits differently for me. Every channel just seemed to be firing on all cylinders with hits coming out left and right.

Of course a lot of legendary shit came out before and after but... there's something about a time when Codename: KND, Code Lyoko, Fosters, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, and the mf og Teen Titans (to name a few) were all airing at once and I just get dizzy with glee

    1. Ferno

      Ferno

and on top of that anime was at its highest point on CN too at that time with Toonami airing on the daytime half of the channel and Pokemon airing on saturday mornings, etc, doubling its already massive lineup of original programming

Add Canadian stuff like Total Drama Island on top of that and the channel was bursting at the seams

Nick was kiiiinda on the way out back then but it still had Teenage Robot and Danny Phantom as you said but also Avatar TLA, and a few cartoons that could've been big if they got more attention like The X's and Catscratch

    2. Iko

      Iko

I've never been much into the occidental cartoons but in (relatively) recent years I watched and enjoyed a couple of them. To cite some, I had some fun with Adventure Time before it became extremely repetitive and boring, and occasionally I still have a lot of fun watching Gumball.

I've always been more of an anime person, but recently I don't find many anime products to be appealing... it's not that I don't like anime anymore, it's more that sadly nowadays 99% of the anime are generic slice of life with moe fanservice, or isekai (some of them have fanservice too, offcourse). The only modern anime thing that I'm watching currently is Attack on Titan, and, months ago I tried out Majo no Tabitabi because I've read interviews of the authors saying "this anime is designed to appeal more to the occidental crowd, and it has no fanservice, we want it to be liked for its own merits not for fanservice". It turned out it was a random waifu anime still filled with fanservice, just not explicit one, and I really didn't enjoy it that much.

Occasionally I watch old stuff that I missed when I was younger, and I usually end up enjoying those old cartoons/anime more than the modern stuff, for some reason, even if it's the first time that I watched them.

Small, full of filler, has a naff story and cutscenes and only controls well when you do exactly what it wants you to do... But it's good enough. Its on the positive side of average, and a step or so above Colours.

I haven't played Gen in years because I have no desire to a play game with a crap story, mostly rubbish boss fights, the final boss of which is fucking awful. Classic Sonic's  gameplay is so bad, just as bad (if not worse) than Sonic 4 Ep1. The game progression-forcing the player to play some shit side missions isn't fun. It's generally considered the Boost gameplay was at it's best in Gens which I agree with-but that's only thanks to the level design, it's still the shame shallow gameplay.

I know Gens is generally well received by fans (and was well received by critics upon release), but it does nothing for me.

Aside from the option to play whatever music track in whatever stage you want (which is really cool), honestly I think describing Gens as "mediocre" is fair.

@TheOcelotI mean... To each their own. Classic Sonic in Generations is fun, and I prefer his levels to the Modern Sonic ones. It's leagues behind the actual Classic gameplay of the Mega Drive games and Mania, but it's still enjoyable entirely on its own merits (unlike S4 and Forces). The Modern boost gameplay is never going to be my cup of tea, and the gameplay on offer in Generations is more of a side step to Unleashed than an outright improvement. I don't hate it. I just don't want to see it ever again (and I said this BEFORE Forces made it even worse)

The boss fights aren't amazing, but they're okay. I tend to gloss over the quality of boss fights in games, unless they're particularly frequent or really bad and form a large part of the game. Basically they're all over so fast and never encourage you to back to them that I just write them off without a second thought. Yes, the Time Earter is awful, but the final boss is the last thing that comes to mind when I think about 99% of games, Sonic or otherwise. There's no reason for me to want to go back to it, and I can't bring myself to dwell on it when the core of the game is nice.

The only parts of Generations that I strongly dislike are the 5 filler missions for each act (45 in all, with a grand total of 0 of them being worth your time). Otherwise I just think of the game as its 18 main acts, which are all pretty alright, and it's story, which is trash. The weighting goes to the main levels over the lacklustre story, and therefore Generations is fine.

      It's decent.

      It's enjoyable enough.

Doesn't even begin to rank amongst my favourite Sonic games ever though, and it along with Colours got way over-praised for all the wrong reasons.

      Indigo Rush

Holy dooley I don't know what substance you have to abuse to think that Gens Classic is worse than Sonic 4 Ep 1, jeezum. C Sonic's levels actually have flow and spectacle and use platforming to maintain the sense of momentum and bounce; something Sonic 4 never got right. It's definitely not 100% Genesis accurate (RIP spinball physics), but it's really fun and good enough for me to want more.

    12. Milo

      Milo

Even if you completely threw out the notion of comparing which did MD elements better on the basis of both of them being terrible; and decided to just look at them in neutral terms. The amount of effort given in terms of budget, presentation, and gameplay ideas is clearly much more evident with Generations. The so-called "sequel as you truly imagined it" couldn't even be sold on its own merits ("TRUE BLUE INITIATIVE").

Not to be rude and I'm late to the party, but I'm shocked Gens Clonic vs. S4E1 is even up for debate. (Unless we're talking about the 3DS version, which I'd say would be fair given how lackluster that is.) When was the last time one even played S4E1 to declare Gens Clonic is just as bad/worse.

  19. Honestly, I've been thinking lately and a part of me feels like that, whenever the new Sonic game is eventually shown off, it's only going to take a couple of seconds of gameplay for me to figure out whether it's "up my alley" or not. Like, what I look for in a Sonic game has been so... idk, discussed and well defined over the last couple of years that I feel like I'm going to be able to pinpoint that shit pretty quickly.

It feels really weird to even think about it that way though. Especially after the whole Forces shit and the idea of not judging a book by its cover and what not. But like... again, idk. It's just hard for me to imagine shit playing out differently these days.

Am I the only one that feels this way? Am I just being weird? probably

I'm more or less convinced the next Sonic game, like the last couple and most of the current media (I like IDW fine but it's not what I want), won't be for me so I'm probably not gonna bother with it. Only way I could possibly be sold on it is if Sega comes out the gate like they did with Mania and tell us exactly what we're getting, none of this CGI concept trailer nonsense like Forces and even then it'd be a toss-up.

    3. Soniman

      Soniman

Forces definitely killed the "wait and see" argument for me. Even if it DOES get better if something sucks it sucks

I think the only time I've seen this work imo is when everyone complained about Gens Green Hill being  to linear/corridor-y and thankfully later levels did rectify that and Green Hill was just a starter level. But like I said that's the only time I think it worked and that was also a decade ago anyway

I'm right there with you. They've left us enough mid-to-trash games as well as time to wait and speculate that many have taken the opportunity to reflect on what they'd prefer to see from this series going forward. It's going to be pretty easy to see if we'll be getting more of the same.

I remember some people ringing the alarm bells when the first gameplay clip of Forces was revealed and it was just Boost Sonic running down a hallway of the not-first level of Sunset Heights for 30 seconds. For me it was that footage, coupled with Iizuka also saying "oh by the way, this game will have three playstyles" to start hoisting red flags. I predicted the game would be a unfocused mess from that point, and lo and behold...

@Blue Blood Sonic 4 is a bizarre one in that I actually don't disagree with the argument of people saying three seconds of gameplay is too little to judge...but what the fuck kind of PR department are you running if you're hyping up a reveal of a highly-anticipated game and three seconds of gameplay is all you're going to show?

@OwlEyes nah, there are/were a few around here that don't think it's as bad as people say. check the threads we had here about the game.

This is just taking me back to when stuff like Sunset Heights and Clonic's GHZ were assumed to be first levels so even if they seemed kinda basic you could give them a pass. Then it turned out they were midway through the game and you just have to wonder what the fuck happened with this game.

Yeah I was actually late joining the nonbelievers in april because a lot of fans called ST's bluff with that first footage at SxSW. I just assumed that it would be like gens and the first level would be a flashy primer.

It was the Avatar reveal that made me go...yeah nah this shit's done.

I vividly remember Forces Green Hill classic being the moment I gave up. The awful music, the terrible physics and level design with Mania as a DIRECT comparison to make it look even worse. The game pretty much fell completely off my radar and was the first time I refused to pay for a main line Sonic with my own money

Toad harbor is probably my favorite "traditional" track in the game. Got a lot of interesting gimmicks and short cuts without being too overwhelming or gimmicky. The atmosphere and music are top notch too

    22. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Okay if we're doing some real talk, my favourite "traditional courses" would definitely include Doughnut Plains 3. It's incredibly basic and is barely changed from the SNES original apart from being general scaled up in size, but it's seriously good fun. You can focus just on the traditional MK racing aspect of it across tight turns and bumpy roads. It's a great level that doesn't try to rewrite the rulebook, which tends to have mixed results that are either great (Ribbon Road) or a total mess (Cheese Land).

For the most part, I prefer the levels that don't go too wild with a theme, gimmick or just being generally crazy. Other top tier levels in MK8D for me would be Royal Raceway, Toad Harbour and Sunshine Airport. But then I do still live some of the more gimmicky stages too, like Dolphin Shoals.

MK8D probably has the best overall track roster of any game in the series. Even if it's missing several old favourites of mine, the bar is just crazy high this time around. The only stages that I dislike in entire 48 stage roster are Shy Guy Falls, Bone Dry Dunes and Cheese Land, all of which are too densely packed and whacky for their own good. I'd happily play anything else, except Mount Wario one endless repeat which is why I stopped playing MK8D online anyway.

    23. Wraith

      Wraith

MK8 is a high tier Mario Kart game overall but it kinda has a problem for me where spectacle was the focus over interesting track design. Too many of the new tracks are just...extremely straightforward with the big hook being a spectacular gliding/gravity section or something. Maybe it's just nostalgia but it felt the older games had interesting/risky shortcuts more often or weird track exclusive mechanics

    24. Kuzu

      Kuzu

In terms of basic bitch tracks, I probably like Figure 8 circuit the most from DS.

Given the anti-grav gimmick, it makes sense 8's focus is more on spectacle, as opposed to track design.

    25. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

@Wraith Yeah, I can definitely hear that. To rag on Cloudtop Cruise again, it's really guilty of that. The section in the thundercloud and in the air ship are the main hooks and set pieces, but both are, in actuality, really basic and pretty boring beyond just looking flashy.

  22. So I just got through with the Snyder Cut (after multiple sittings throughout the weekend mind you) and... there's a lot of stupid shit in it... but I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy it. Definitely the better of the two versions.

It's easily Snyder's best work in the DCU and might even top out WW for me (have to rewatch that soon). Hell, and I never thought I'd say this... but I honestly wouldn't mind them continuing with this storyline. The whole thing would still need some work don't get me wrong, but I can now see some potential here that I didn't before.

Like, real talk, I was so ready to laugh at this. And no, I still don't consider BvS or Man of Steel to be good movies (nor WW84 or Shazam for that matter, haven't seen Aquaman).

  23. Welp, can't say I'm too disappointed about this. Sucks that one of the last few games I was actually interested in this year is getting pushed but hey, anything to keep it from becoming the dumpster fire that was Marvel's Avengers.

The delay is annoying, but better to take time and polish the game  rather than rush it out.

As for Suicide Squad, RS did a top job with the Batman games so I'm confident they'll do SQ justice.

There is just so much you can do with these characters. Though, I'm also having the hardest time seeing how this timeline could ever reach that potential; for obvious reasons.

    1. Speedi

      Speedi

I'd settle for something as basic as a retelling of one of the NES game's stories just with more of the newer cast tbh. The Mario series has generally presented it's world and characters in such a simple video gamey way that I don't have many high expectations for a movie being heavily supervised by Miyamoto.

Just make it look good, keep the humor from getting too juvenile and I'm sold.
