  1. 100%'d Galaxy. I'll prolly do Luigi Mode at a later date.

So that's Sunshine 100% and Galaxy 100% down then... to be honest I think I enjoyed my Sunshine revisit more. Don't get me wrong, Galaxy is a wonderful game, inarguably one of the best there is, but I had a blast revisiting Sunshine and using all the crazy movement options. Galaxy's take on Mario's moveset feels so... limited in comparison. That and I just prefer the way Sunshine often gives you a million options to do things within a given stage, I suppose.

  2. Microsoft have acquired Bethesda. Holy shit.

    1. AlphaRuby

Not sure what to make of this.

Both have been notorious lately for making really baffling choices that pleased very few people, and now they're joining together?

    2. Strickerx5

Welp... people wanted MS to have exclusives...

Ooh, there’s going to be some heated gamers today.

    3. Marcello

What bad choices have Microsoft made lately? Can't think of anything. Outside of games, they've been pretty great recently.

But, holy cow, MS buying Bethesda is huge. Never expected it.

    4. AlphaRuby

@Marcello Isn't bad decisions regarding games a huge problem for a video game publisher?

      Game Pass getting even better.

    7. Teospooker

I mean, Microsoft has shown they don't care much about leaving some titles multiplat, so i'm not expecting the next Doom or Elder Scrolls VI to be Series X/PC exclusives.
It's still huge as news though.

    8. KHCast

Wonder how many companies will get monopolized this generation by the big 3

    9. Bobnik

What bad choices have Microsoft made lately? Can't think of anything. Outside of games, they've been pretty great recently.

Series S, which means kneecapping next-gen games with technical limitations (you don't push out a next-gen console with a weaker GPU and slower RAM than the mid-gen machine of last gen); Game Pass on PC raised in price by 5 dollars/euros because it got out of beta with seemingly no changes whatsoever; removed an option to buy Live Gold for 12 months, retroactively making it more expensive; the financing plans, making people think it's a better choice for poor people, when it's not at all; potentially this acquisition since MS can easily just flip a switch on any of these IPs now (more of a speculation, but the history hasn't been kind to MS IPs). That's what I could think of at this point in time that's not just "no games lul"

But yeah, wow, that's a big one. I really hope MS doesn't touch the franchises people give a shit, but again, their history with those hasn't been particularly good.

    10. Teospooker

Also, i realised just now that an Halo/Doom crossover is now more possible than ever, and i don't know how to process it.

    11. pppp

@Marcello  Well that's just it, the games are why there's alot of older hardcore Xbox fans that are disappointed that Microsoft doesn't make AAA M rated IPs anymore(Stuff like pre 343 Halo, Gears of War pre Coalition). Like it or not, that's what defined the Xbox brand during its first 2 gens, it was a console for late teens/young adults and that's how they built their original fanbase. Now all they make is smaller scale indie style games all while watering down Halo and Gears.

Where's Microsoft's God of War? Their Ghost of Tsushima? Microsoft hasn't released a new AAA M rated IP since 2016, where are the games catered to their core fanbase that originally brought them to the dance back in the day?

so what do we do about the bethesda games coming exclusively to ps5

      are they still happening or

    16. KHCast

@Polkadi~☆ What games are exclusively coming to PS5 from them? And prob they’ll become multi-plat.

    17. Marcello

      Can't quote here lol

@AlphaRuby @pppp Sure, but I'd think this as a way of combating that problem.

S will hold back Next-Gen to an extent, but it's still a good way for people who can't afford the more expensive consoles to get into next-gen. It's unfortunate, but also... not? lol I'd have preferred it not existing, but I'm not too bothered.

I don't know about the Game Pass price hike. It does suck, but I don't know what the price was, so no opinion.

The Xbox Live stuff absolutely sucks, but if insiders are correct, Xbox may be moving away from paid online. So, I guess my opinion hitches on that. If it doesn't go free, fuck Microsoft for that, if it does, great.

Microsoft isn't killing any IP that is currently alive. Expect Bethesda to still mostly operate themselves. If something doesn't come back, it's because Bethesda didn't want it to. As I expect with stuff that bombed hard, like Prey or Dishonored.

    18. Tornado

Series S, which means kneecapping next-gen games with technical limitations (you don't push out a next-gen console with a weaker GPU and slower RAM than the mid-gen machine of last gen)

      Graphics don't work that way.

    19. KHCast

@Marcello why did you quite me?

    20. Marcello

Lol oops. I saw your name above the message I meant and automatically quoted you 😅😅 Sorry.

    21. Bobnik

I don't know about the Game Pass price hike. It does suck, but I don't know what the price was, so no opinion.

It was 5 before, with a 1-dollar "trial" thing. They did say that the 5 dollars per month was an "introductory" price for the beta period, but I kinda hoped they'd stick with that price point. I'm also talking Game Pass for PC specifically, Game Pass for Xbox and Ultimate are the same price, (I think 5 and 20 respectively?) at least for now.

      Graphics don't work that way.

Not talking purely graphics (though that also could be somewhat of a factor, more from the game design and performance side of things. At least it has an SSD, so it doesn't brutally murder potential, but it's still a pretty weak machine devs will have to settle with.

    22. Tornado

Not talking purely graphics, more from the game design and performance side of things. At least it has an SSD, so it doesn't brutally murder potential, but it's still a pretty weak machine devs will have to settle with.

If the Series S had a substantially weaker CPU than the Series X or PS5, it would be a serious problem with how games are forced to be designed for the weakest system. Instead it has one that slots between the PS5 and SeX. The graphics card is substantially weaker than either of those, but it's the same architecture with the same feature set supported in hardware that the GPU in the XBone X didn't support. Make no mistake: The XBone X cannot do the things that the Series S will be able to do even specifically limiting it to the GPU abilities. TFLOP numbers are only useful even as a theoretical metric when comparing different versions of the same hardware architecture to each other.

All developers need to do to "settle with" a system with a lower spec graphics card but near identical everything else is have games output at a lower resolution (which is what the SeS already does, since it's a 1080/1440p machine by design); just like everyone playing a game on a PC has already done for 25 years, and which console-specific game developers have already been doing since the PS360 era.

    23. Polkadi~☆

It's a limited time exclusive deal, but still, Deathloop's console release would be exclusive to the PS5 for a while.

    Alright, onto Galaxy then

  5. https://bleedingcool.com/games/sega-reveals-sonic-the-hedgehog-30th-anniversary-merch-collection/

Sonic 30th Anniversary merch stuff announced; IDW's doing a Classic Sonic comic special.

    1. Ryannumber1Scarer

This is the third Classic special we've gotten when it comes to the comics. Genesis came out for the 20th anniversary, while Genesis of a Hero never even got to finish in Archie, before it got shit-canned.

Four, if we count Mega Drive.

I really wish we could just get Mega Drive reprinted into a graphic novel.

    2. Sean

I'll accept it if it means we get to see the Hooligans again but otherwise I sleep

    3. Thigolf

      Heck yeah, Classic Comic book!

    5. Strickerx5

  6. So yeah, new Sakura Wars game - Sakura Revolution got announced. From FateGO devs Delightworks for smartphones.

That said, alongside BLACK and Revolution (which turns out are the same game), SEGA also trademarked Ishin (Restoration); so perhaps there's yet more Sakura on the way.

Finally got my Game Boy Player setup up and running today. I've forgone using the GB Player disc, because a) it's expensive and b) it sucks ass. Instead I'm using the Game Boy Interface homebrew via an SD Card Launcher for GameCube! I need to get RGB SCART cables for actually good video quality, but I'm happy I have a setup for playing GBA games on my monitors through original hardware now.

(I also learned that you can actually run entire GC games off MicroSD cards, which is... terrifying.)

  11. https://www.gematsu.com/2020/06/picross-s-mega-drive-mark-iii-edition-announced-for-switch

SEGA's getting its own Picross game! Themed around the Mega Drive and SEGA Mark III (Master System)

    1. Dejimon11

      There's your sonic game announcement

  12. That was pretty much what I expected (if a bit short?), and I think it was.. fine for what it was. Interested in the Neo Geo ports (if M2's on them I could actually see them pulling some strings for Pocket Adventure...) and Bloodstained CotM 2 was a nice surprise.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

It was about 45 minutes, so definitely not what I'd call short. Fine for what it was, but holy crap was it ever niche. Shantae, a game that came out a couple of weeks ago and is heavily anime inspired, was the least anime thing there.

    2. Wraith

Was hoping for something new from SNK but what they showed wasn't bad

  13. Namco's new Famicom collection released in Japan. It's unusual in that you can buy all the games individually, which I quite like actually; I can just grab the ones I want!

...the catch being that they've messed up and buying games instead gives you games from the unannounced second wave of titles. So for example; I bought Galaga and got Mappy. Which I mean, I'm fine with, but it's a pretty bizarre gaffe!

  14. I was very bored yesterday, so I threw together a hypothetical SEGA/French Bread (the UNIST/Dengeki Fighting guys) fighting game roster.

    1. Thigolf

      Very solid roster.

      Now I'm sad again.

  15. SEGA's done a couple of interviews that put the Game Gear Mini into context a bit better than the initial announcement, I think.

    - It wasn't intended as an actual MD Mini successor, but rather a small product to celebrate SEGA's 60th Anniversary and the GG's 30th Anniversary

    - It's not getting a general release; only a handful of online retailers are stocking it

    - They referenced the VMU for the buttons and D-Pad, on the "actually playing it" side of things

    - chibi-tech did the menu music this time around

They also mention that most of SEGA's plans for the 60th Anniversary sadly got axed, due to COVID-19. That's rough.

    1. Wraith

That last comment puts things into perspective. I hadn't seen the point thus far in sega's theatrics for the year, but it makes sense that there was going to be more.

    2. Thigolf

Plans as in celebrations or products? Because products must've been in the pipeline way before, right?

  16. SEGA just announced the Game Gear Micro.

    And they really mean Micro

  17. I've been back at modding Sonic Mania; for a while now I've wanted to be able to play Encore MSZ1 in Mania Mode instead of the Sky Chase act, but it's unbelievably hard to actually do that and have it work properly.

I've finally got it working properly anywho.

But the catch was the stage listing was now missing a slot, so the File Select menu was sending me to the wrong stages.

...so now I've added AIZ from Encore's intro in as an intermission zone between Hydrocity and Mirage Saloon, and I'm extending it a bit and adding some Mania Mode exclusive extras

    1. Diogenes

that's a pretty clever solution; i always felt the game could've used a little more connective tissue between HCZ and MSZ to explain why they're suddenly on the tornado, so returning to AIZ (where it was presumably left) fits pretty well.

    2. TheOcelot

Nice. I've always wanted to play Encore MS act1 in Mania mode.

    3. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

      Mania just somehow got better

    4. Plumbers_Helper

That's a really clever idea, using Angel Island as a short 1 Act bridge between Hydrocity and Mirage Saloon, though I'm curious how you plan to transition from Angel Island to Mirage Saloon - if you have any plans at all. I don't know how possible making a Phantom Ruby style cutscene transition is, but I know you did some pretty cool things with your Hatsune Miku mod.

I know and understand why you don't have any plans to release this for now, but if you ever do someday, I'd like to see a version released that keeps the original Sky Chase-esque Mirage Saloon Act 1, but still uses Angel Island between Hydrocity and Mirage Saloon. The act could end with a sign post next to a parked Tornado.

    5. Tracker_TD

Funnily enough it actually ends next to the Tornado already; even though the Sky Chase act is cut I feel like it helps explain how they got there. I might try porting a stage outro though, just to see if it works.

  18. Interesting tidbit from the AMA with Gerscovich on Reddit rn, acknowledging Amy's shift to being "a much more empowered character"

    1. Maxtiis

I would argue she was never a damsel in distress after Sonic CD but eh. Oh well.

    2. D.H

So....when can we have a playable Amy again, SEGA?

    3. Sean

I'll admit that I liked what they did with Amy's character in Boom (from what I've seen of it) and I appreciated that they kept her crush on Sonic intact while handling it differently.

  19. oh cool Discord and NSO actually got added to the profile contact method section

they don't appear on posts yet, but they're there on profiles, so that's neat!

  20. Finished Sakura Wars earlier! Wasn't sure how it'd go, being a genre that I don't usually dabble in, but it was a great time! Hopefully this isn't just a one-off revival

    1. Sean

I'm curious if it's a good entry point or at least can be enjoyed on its own for someone like me who has never played a SW game.

    2. Tracker_TD

I've never played one either; the plot is fairly detached from the previous games, and the bulk of the callbacks are stuff that's moreso there for fanservice, but not really integral to enjoying it. So I think it's a great entry point, more of a soft-reboot though still in the same timeline.

    3. Sean

The graphics were the main thing that stood out to me when it was first announced; I really enjoy some of Sega's takes on 3D anime-styled characters such as in this and Valkyria Chronicles, and it's neat seeing Sega finally putting a Hedgehog Engine to use outside of Sonic.

    4. Jovahexeon Explosive Witch

  21. Cool tidbit from the Sonic CD Spec Docs that Masato Nishimura dug up:

Wacky Workbench was originally named "Crazy Toybox".

  22. I replayed Shadow the Hedgehog for stream purposes and realised something horrifying after beating it

that it wasn't the worst 3D Sonic game I've ever played, like by a decent margin

Well done Shadow my respect for you increased today

    3. skull902

After all I heard about it beforehand, I was pretty amazed by that very thing when I first played it about three years after it came out. A lot of the missions are bad but the base gameplay itself is actually kind of enjoyable to me.

    4. Kuzu

Yes, let the darkness consume you.

    5. Ferno

Tbh if the guns were auto-aim like in SA1 or SA2 then it would've been even better, also if all the guns were just fantasy/ lazer-esque guns but whatever

I broke down my thoughts over on the Twitterverse

    8. Kuzu

      >SA1 and SA2 are mediocre.

You're wrong, but I accept your reasoning as well sound and structured. But you're still wrong.

    9. Tracker_TD

To be fair to it, Adventure is probably my most replayed Sonic game besides Mania

I just die a little inside every time I have to do Sky Chase, or Chaos 4, etc

    10. Kuzu

...You know what, that's understandable; have a nice day.

    11. Jango

Hm... but what about Lost Impact? :P

    12. JosepHenry

You can skip Shadow levels you don't like, including Lost Impact.

    13. Ryannumber1Scarer

I am of the opinion that Shadow as a game would be better regarded if the game's levels were just structured like a traditional game, instead of having to replay levels over and over again to get certain routes.

  23. The April news drop for the Sonic SXSW stuff has been pushed back indefinitely, due to the world's current state of affairs. I fully expected this, and it's understandable; glad they're prioritising the team's safety.

    1. Jack out of the comics!

      Jack out of the comics!

Lmao, the fandom might just explode now... Anyway I understand, they can't work with the world in crisis. It's cool.

    2. TheOcelot

The safety of the people who work for SEGA is of course the most important thing. So I'm happy to wait a little longer for some Sonic news.

    3. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Yeah, I pretty much expected this too. When the SXSW panel was cancelled and they said that they'd provide the news in another format in April, that when individual events like SXSW where being cancelled individually but the world wasn't on lock-down. Circumstances changed so quickly but SEGA never put out any updates, so it seemed likely that they couldn't put anything in place. I'll look forward to the update whenever they can put it out.

    4. Strickerx5

Good for them for prioritizing safety.

Though, this sort of reads like there's more to this update than just a trailer drop which might lead to the wrong impression for many? Idk, I just feel like, with this, the question of "what are they going to do that can't be edited together into a video remotely" starts to arise.

    5. Tracker_TD

It's about more than just dropping a trailer - if they have to delay a hypothetical game because of the outbreak and shift in working conditions, then the entire marketing plan is going to be shifted and jumbled around. It might just make more sense to kick off marketing later, even if it just starts with a single trailer.

    6. Jack out of the comics!

      Jack out of the comics!

Thing is, there is a high percent they may delay their games, maybe they were meant to be released this year? I dunno, but most companies are doing that obviously.

    7. Thigolf

Tracker is right about the marketing, one can only drop so many music videos.

Seriously though, this crisis is obviously more important than an dumb old Sonic game, so yeah, let's just wait this one out, we got more important things to worry about.

    8. Dejimon11

You guys need to remember that SEGA did have a big marketing push for Sonic this year and their original plan was to make a sonic related announcement every 20th of this year so their plans have ben put on the kibosh. But I digress it's good that they're prioritizing the safety of everybody right now.

    9. Chili Dawg

    10. The Deleter

      The Deleter

I actually hope they can delay it by a year or so, when everyone can be working as a group again. After moving over to digital collaborations myself, I can't imagine developing anything as a team being better in these conditions, much less enjoyable. A game's creativity thrives off of team collaboration and morale, so it really doesn't make sense to just push forward like it's a product with a ship-by date, to me.

    4. Strickerx5

Wow, outright inviting it at this point aren't we

I mean I honestly don't care as far as games are concerned anymore. Actually quite impressed they don't have anything Mario related coming up.

Also hey, I'm always up for a possible Sunshine remake. Maybe they can throw in a new Strikers some where in there; but with my luck lol nah.

Though I am still pissed about that whole "Super Nintendo World" bs. It's not a Nintendo World if it's just Mario. Can miss me with that one.

    5. FaultyWindmill

I'm far more of a Sonic guy than a Mario guy but I always love the 3D entries so this would be amazing, and more than keep fans busy until the next 3D game.

      SEGA please take notes.

EDIT: I totally see this starting in summer and running through the rest of the year. Whatever form Nintendo's big digital conference for the year takes, I'd expect this to be announced there, with Mario 64 launching on the eshop after the presentation.
