  1. Timed exclusives are god dang idiotic but I'm surprised Oddworld and Ghostwire are coming to Xbox. I would've expected them to be PS exclusives. I'm glad.

Same with Solar Ash (god that game looks SO good).

    1. Thigolf

Oddworld has been on Xbox ever since Xbox has been around, even being exclusive with Munch for quite a while, so I'd be more surprised if it wasn't coming.

It being timed exclusive really sucks though.

      Blue Wisp

Yeah you're right, my mind was stuck with the first two Oddworld games being some classic PS1 titles.

  2. Seeing Matt McMuscles' video on Earthworm Jim 3D just made me think that I'm honestly surprised Jim hasn't gotten a comeback these last few years.

virtually each company that got their hands on the ip tried to get a new game made, only for it to be cancelled each time (there was a psp EWJ game in development that arguably got the closest to completion, there's some screenshots of it out in the wild). i largely chalk it up to severe mismanagement of the ip across multiple parties; case in point, the current rightsholders are making a new game that's exclusive to the impressively-miscalculated new intellivision console that's in development.

  3. Did LEGO just get political?

It's the first time I've seen LEGO get political, I'm shocked in a positive way.

I don't know why you have an issue calling these issues politics. They Just are. They objectively are politics, and that doesn't undermine them one bit.

    4. DanJ86

2nd definition. "Activities aimed at improving someone's status or increasing power within an organization."

In this case, stopping the senseless murder of black people by the police or improving the lives of the black community in general.

Normally, I'd be deeply suspicious when a brand makes a statement like this. But considering they seem to be giving money to charity, this one sounds genuine compared to others.

    5. KHCast

It’s not political to say “hey, black people should be treated regularly”, as that implies there’s an argument to make for the opposite as opposed to it being a open and closed case. Politics have reasonable opposing arguments to reasonably discuss. Human rights is not one of them cause there’s no “argument” to make. It’s like saying gays wanting equality is “political”. Why do you think people make fun of gamers that whine about inclusion as “making a game political”? Tying me being black to that being an inherent political subject is fucking stupid

@DanJ86 Blacks arent a organization, we’re a community. Republicans and democrats are organizations. A charity, is an organization. Someone’s race, or sexuality, is not an organization

Yeah, dude, you're describing politics. How else would you define those things? The way that society works... that's politics. It doesn't matter what the arguments are.

  5. So I've been in a classic Silent Hill mood lately and my only option right now is the HD collection.

I've heard horrors about it, but is it THAT bad or is it stuff that only fans would... Er... "Care" about?

    1. Teoskaven

No, i can tell you it is that bad. The only savageble change is the new set of voice actors, and i know some fans don't like even those.

If possible, follow this guide (it's possible there is a more updated version of it, keep looking if you're into it):

Can't believe Behaviour Interactive resurrected Silent Hill before Konami did.

    Like what the fuck?

    1. Milo

is it really unbelievable given where konami has left the series as of late? (canning silent hills, sending the pt demo in the vault, and only using the franchise since then for pachinko slot machines)

honestly a miracle konami decided to pull a sega and licensed the franchise out to another studio imo

    2. Blue Wisp

      Blue Wisp

I'm extremely surprised that Konami allowed them to use the license.

Either that must've cost a lot of money or Konami just gave it away because they don't care about Silent Hill, whichever it is, it's terrible either way for a franchise that shaped horror games like Silent Hill did.

  9. Does a good story make up for bad gameplay? Does good gameplay make up for a bad story? Which one is more... Tolerable?

    1. Teoskaven

Bad story compensated by good gameplay, especially since most games these days allow you to skip cutscenes.

    2. Sean

It depends. I've played games where one thing being bad didn't bother me so much, and others where it takes me out of it and puts me off from playing more no matter how good the other parts are.

    3. Strickerx5

Depends on the game. There really isn’t some overarching rule that applies to all.

Both should be at their highest possible quality and those who try and argue that one can fall by the wayside will always lose me. It’s like saying one part of your meal can give you food poisoning since it isn’t the “main course.” Like, if you’re paying for the full meal, none of it should be bad.

Imo, it’s sad when people skip over the idea of making something in a game better just to debate on whether it’s needed at all.

    4. Sean

Different games are gonna have different priorities. As an example, in the case of Doom (the old ones at least) the lack of plot doesn't hurt it in the slightest. I actually don't like how the new games try to put more emphasis on story because it pulls you from the gameplay and puts focus on something that never needed to be there in the first place.

2016 even acknowledges this in the first cutscene. Doomguy doesn't give a shit about Samuel Hayden's justification speeches and yet halfway we're forced to sit through a five minute long, in-game cutscene, TWICE, on shit that neither Doomguy nor the player cares about. It's fucking torturous on repeat playthroughs.

It's true that they put effort into the story and lore in the new Doom games, and you can argue that they're even good, but it feels like wasted effort to me, compared to other FPS games I've played with crummy yet skippable cutscenes.

    5. Sean

I should mention though that I don't necessarily have an issue with series switching focus between installments. Early Wolfenstein games were not concerned with plot at all whereas the new ones are, and I don't have a problem with that because the plot is what they're designed around. Machine Games wanted to do something different with Wolf and I can respect that. Doom 2016 wants you to believe that the gameplay comes first, except three or four moments where it forces you to not play at all for several minutes, so the emphasis on story is especially annoying in 2016's case.

    6. shdowhunt60

I don't think a good story makes up for bad gameplay, but I think that having something that's engaging makes it easier to cover up any niggles or flaws.

    7. Strickerx5

I see Doom as part of a specific subset of games that not only make one category a priority, but actively market it as such. Which is big factor on why I agree that this all really does depend on the game.

Personally, I do think a story in Doom could work and the extension of it in Eternal is one of the things I’ve actually enjoyed about it so far. Although, at the same time, 2016’s outing was going for something very different so I see the argument there.

Though I’m really more concerned about the series that have showcased the potential to tackle these areas well but just stop doing so because someone got the idea that it wasn’t “needed” so why bother.

I guess the last decade in this franchise has really made me more defensive of these things as a whole...

    8. Sean

Though I’m really more concerned about the series that have showcased the potential to tackle these areas well but just stop doing so because someone got the idea that it wasn’t “needed” so why bother.

Yeah, Paper Mario and Sonic are two instances that come to mind here. The lack of story in Sonic bothers me less than some people but I still wish we got more character interactions in the main games even if the plot still boiled down to Eggman taking over the world and Sonic needing to stop him. Paper Mario is a jarring case where the developers put a large emphasis on the writing and humor itself, but also don't care to make it involve a story or characters that the player would care about.

On a related note, I get why some people are into this but I don't think Forces doing it via codecs was graceful either, because it's mostly during gameplay and it immediately loses its luster after the first run through (also I ended up turning them off because I quickly learned that nothing these characters say in Forces is worth listening to)

    9. Strickerx5

Forces really didn't do it well at all. Though, I still want to see them go for it again.

I've been playing a lot of Ace Combat 7 recently (good game, would recommend) and one of the great things they do in that game is tie a lot of in-game comms directly into what's happening in the air space. Future events are foreshadowed, things you do well at (or not so well at) are commented on in real time, a number of characters are given a lot of background story through them, new mission events and objectives are directly tied to them, ect.

That's what I hope this franchise can do with them at some point. Like, it's not ideal, but even the simple act of seeing Tails provide air support for you during a level (shooting at enemies out of your reach or marking hidden areas in a level) would be fucking miles ahead of Forces. I'd still want him to be playable, but it'd be a major step in the right direction imo.

    10. Sean

Yeah that'd be cool. Hell even the Sly Cooper games handle mission support better than Forces did. In Forces my complaint was that nobody acted like themselves. When I listen to characters talking I want Knuckles to be Knuckles and Amy to be Amy. Spouting random tactical war crap isn't how you endear me to these characters especially when you can interchange them with just about anyone and leave the dialogue as is. I hate to admit it but I find Heroes' in-level dialogue to be less grating than Forces'.

And I heard good things about AC7, never played any of those games before but it looked impressive. Will keep an eye out for it now.

  10. so uh

why did camelot castle's theme have that weird lighthearted part in it again

I mean it's awesome but what

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Because it plays when you're going through the happy part of town that isn't flooded with enemies. The entire level uses dynamic music.

    2. Blue Wisp

      Blue Wisp

Wait Camelot Castle has dynamic music?

Is it the only stage that has dynamic music? Because besides maybe some parts of The Cauldron I can't think of any other stage that has that..

Explains a lot, never noticed that ingame.

    3. Blue Blood

Terminal Velocity in a... HD remaster I guess or upscaled (I'm not counting using Dolphin upscale) would look soooo damn stunning.

  15. So... Is there any chance of Astral Chain getting multiplatform'd in the future? I kind of... Don't have a Switch...

    1. Blue Wisp

      Blue Wisp

When asked about the possibility of Astral Chain becoming available on multiple platforms in a February 2020 interview (focused on the then-recently announced Kickstarter campaign for the remastered The Wonderful 101), Inaba stated that "it's too early to say", and that "ultimately, it's Nintendo's call, not [theirs]".[13]

They own the publishing rights to Astral Chain so really we have no say in that matter.

aaaaaaaaaaaa well I guess I'll save up for a Switch or something.

    2. Bobnik

On one hand, I would've loved it to come out on PC for that sweet 60 FPS

On the other hand the game's not that great all things considered so

    3. TCB

"not that great all things considered"

      what are you smokin

    4. Bobnik

      "what are you smokin"

If I was, I'd never say that

      I'll elaborate why I don't think it's that great:
      1) While Legion is a cool mechanic, when you think about it, it's just several different mechanics from Platinum's other games that are made worse somehow. Sword Legion is a poor man's Zandatsu from Metal Gear Rising, Wolf Legion is I think a beast form from Bayonetta, only controls like ass, etc.
      2) The story actually kinda blows by the middle point, and the main character not talking hinders it by a lot. There's a lot of stuff happening with poor pacing, forced conflict (like, the only reason why we fight Akira was because...clones I guess??)
      3) The Astral Plane is cool-looking...until you have to go to it nearly every chapter, then it just becomes boring and monotonous
      4) In general the fighting felt sluggish. I played Nier Automata somewhat recently and despite it being much more simplistic than Astral Chain, it still felt much better than that game.
      5) Characters are dumb. That goes to point 2, but whatever, this is worth mentioning.
      6) The platforming is pretty bad, even by hack-n-slash standards. I fell in this game a lot more than in other games because of Legions being janky when platforming. Also no jump button, why?!

      7) File 8. While skippable, it was still just a collection of pretty basic minigames that either controlled like ass (the one where you have to collect red matter in an amount of time by riding the Wolf Legion), or frustrating (the one where you play one of those Parking flash games).

8 ) The locations repeat themselves several times. This would've been fine in a more open-world game, but here it adds to the monotony the game had with Astral Planes. The game's length also doesn't help, 30 hours is a bit much.

So yeah, there's just a lot of flaws in this game for me

  16. I'm just a mean green mother from outer space and I'm baaaad

  20. Slight small The Rise of Skywalker spoilers but what the flying fuck.

So, the story starts with the crawl mentioning a "message with the Emperor's voice" that suddenly broadcasted everywhere in the galaxy and that everyone heard yet the film itself doesn't... Show it. Anything. It just says "hey this happened" and that's it.

Well, the only place that message was heard was in...

So the very thing that kickstarts the event of the last entry in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga, the ending of the story started 40 years ago, was only shown in... Fortnite.

    1. PC the Hedgehog

  21. My favourite part of Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is that Jamie Christopherson doesn't actually... Do heavy metal songs or soundtracks and yet MGR got that killer OST.
