  1. One has to wonder how the Diamond and Pearl remakes are going to go.

Doesn't that still have Denuvo attached on it?

  3. Surprise surprise; most game reviewers don't care about all of the nonsense that the Pokemon fandom has been shouting for months.

It's almost like it was a pointless endeavor fueled by adults with far too much investment in a franchise they played when they were children.

Look, I apologize for how I sound.

But I've seen this type of stuff in this  and other fandoms for years, so my tolerance for it is extremely low.

@Polkadi~☆ Many years ago, yes it did. And I realized years ago that getting so emotionally heated over something like a video game was only hurting myself and I chilled the fuck out.

    4. Kuzu

@Sean I should clarify that I'm not referring to people who have expressed genuine disappointment and criticism, but the vocal people who have been spamming hashtags all over social media in a bid against game developers. I empathise with the ones who express concerns because I agree with a lot of complaints. What I don't agree with is how some of these people have chosen to conduct themselves in this situation.

    5. Sean

      Sean

Your statuses have been pretty obnoxious these past few days. You are literally complaining about complaining, and I honestly can't comprehend some of the arguments you make. It's especially rich that you're putting so much stock on reviews on a forum about Sonic the Hedgehog. I don't know why you bring this up so much but it comes off as incredibly disingenuous, like you don't really care about the issue either way and are just looking for a reason to complain about something while acting like you're above it all.

    6. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

It's kind of unfair to generalize everyone with greivances as manchildren because reviewers have an opinion that differs, lest we forget that Sonic 4 reviewed pretty favourably despite being basically trash. The fact that you were this quick to backpedal should be enough indication of that.

    7. dbzfan7

      dbzfan7

I don't think you gotta apologize for nothing. Complaints are a ok, but that fire going on was more than just valid complaints, it's real ugly.

    8. Kuzu

      Kuzu

@Sean I clarified that I was referring to people on social media; nowhere did I mention anyone on this site. If I gave off that impression, then I apologize, but as I said, I have no issues with anyone expressing actual constructive criticism.  Just because I choose to maintain a level headed attitude doesn't mean that I don't care about these issues.

@Blacklightning That's why I specified who I was referring to. But at the end of the day, reviewers have their own opinions too. Just because WE know Sonic 4 is trash doesn't mean everyone outside the fandom will share that opinion and its kind of unfair to expect them to.

    9. Zaysho

      Zaysho

I don't think the social media outrage and YouTube clickbait matters or is worth talking about because it comes across like you're conflating people with genuine critique with loudmouthed dipshits. Those sorts of people will always be a part of that sort of thing, unfortunately.

    10. Kuzu

      Kuzu

That is true, but those people are kind of the reason this is getting as much attention as it is. It wouldn't be worth talking about otherwise. Because at the end of the day, we're talking about what looks like just an average game that simply fell below some people's expectations. Due no in part to the developer's own incompetence in the situation mind you.

      Kuzu

I didn't wanna say anything until I got inside my house, but the games are, ironically enough, running into the same problems I have had with Sonic games lately. The lack of any substantial content. Ever since Black and White, the games have gotten far more linear and simplified. Dungeons are smaller, the region has very little room to explore until you finish the main campaign. There really isn't much to the games overall once you finish the main campaign.

So you'd think the main campaign would be better to compensate but lol...Pokemon writing. Its not terrible, but its not exactly stellar oscar worthy writing either. I say this as someone who has enjoyed the stories of Gen 5 and 7.

So all your left with is a game with bells and whistles, but nothing holding it up underneath.

Bear in mind, that only applies to the main campaign. The improvements to competitive I really like. But I don't just play Pokemon for competitive soooo....

    3. Blue Blood

      Blissfully ignorant.

I don't think that SwSh could be worse than the dumpster fire off SuMo, even if it is littered sign laziness and other problems.

    4. Bobnik

      Bobnik

The series as a whole? Not feeling much

Sword/Shield specifically? I'm actually playing through it dont ask how. It's fine, it's a Pokemon game. Like Mr. Gamexplain said, it's "too streamlined for its own good", but it's definitely not a dumpster fire like the community makes it out to be. Not worth 60 bucks IMO, but I'll say that it's the easiest game to get into competitive Pokemon.

Speaking of said community, I think I can officially say it's the worst community in my eyes cuz holy shit. Gaslighting, death threats, outright faking bugs that are actually side effects of ROM hacking/cheating, overall shit-flinging from both sides. Fucking disgusting.

    5. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

I haven't liked the main Pokemon games since Gen 5 ended. BW 1 and 2 were the last games actually worth a damn.

Meanwhile, the last couple of anime series were actually pretty good, even the one I didn't like at first, and the newest one is departing from being a game commercial to do it's own thing and looks fantastic. That was always where my main attention on Pokemon was at anyways, so I'm more than happy on that front.

      Cayenne

Kinda sad with the games and extremely sad with the fanbase.

I was expecting a big evolution for the series after the jump from a limited handheld console to the more powerful Switch, but nothing about Sword and Shield looks better than the 3DS games to me. If these games are going to be the standard for the other Switch titles, then I'm out. I'm in 2019, not 2013.

The controversy around Sw/Sh is horrible, though. Seeing people that aren't little kids anymore insulting and threatening others just because of a silly game with cute monsters is sad. Really sad. There's nothing wrong about being passionate about something, but things like death threats are fake informations are completly unnecessary.

  6. Hey, since Game Freak are shitting the bed now, will the Sonic Team redemption arc begin now?

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

Not until they give into EA and unlock the Maijn transformation. After killing Jet Set Radio and a few other older properties, they fight Mario’s dev team, baiting them to reveal his new transformation via Cappy. Coming to their senses at the last minute, they knock their eternal rival out to stop the monster they unleashed - Maijn Activision and his powers of loot mechanics.

Saying a final goodbye to Sonic before knocking him and Yakuza out and telling Capcom and Nintendo to get them clear of the blast radius, Sonic Team unleash their final attack - Final Mania - sacrificing itself to stop EA and Maijn Activision...

...this, is the Sonic Team Redemption Arc.

Pokémon started high and has been going steadily downhill for months. Sonic started low and then sunk to depths nobody had ever seen before. The new movie trailer was released mere hours ago. We're in the knee-jerk reaction stage right now.

  13. Anyone else find it weird how people keep talking about how "bad" Sword and Shield look graphically....even though it looks no worse than the average Switch title.

I'm playing Fire Emblem right now and the graphics are just as stilted lmao.

    1. Sean

      Sean

It looks like an upscaled 3DS game and I'm pretty over the 3D games' graphical style as it is

I'm also very confused by what you consider to be an "average Switch title" because FE aside, all of Nintendo's other output looks great compared to Pokemon.

    2. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

There is a lot of good looking nicely animated Switch games far better then Sword & Shield. You playing one other cheaply animated game on Switch as a comparison isn't proof of anything. Hohoo!

    3. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I don't find it weird cause Sword and Shield do look bad graphically. Low resolution textures, weak lighting and awful animation.

      pokemon-sword-shield-ocarina-of-time-tre

Speaking of animation, there are two things to discuss; the humans and the Pokémon. The Pokémon have been discussed at length already. They hardly move in battle. They have very basic animations for idle, attack 1, attack 2 and taking damage. These are lifted directly out XY/SuMo. The rest of the animation is handled via rotating the model and graphic overlays, exactly like a Game Boy game. It looks cheap and lazy. Remember Darkest Lariat in SuMo? It was literally the Pokémon T-posing and being rotated. You're never supposed to see a T-pose, and here it was front and centre. We know that the SwSh animations are just as cheap.

      uve21pdhxijwcfixbxbm.gif

And then there are the human animations. Outside of a handful of fully animated cutscenes, everything in the overworld is animated as though it's a GameBoy game too. All human characters share a small pool of animations (once again from the 3DS games) and rigidly get swapped between them the cutscene progresses. Character walks in straight line > character rotates 90 degrees to face the player > character starts talking with casual animation > character stands idle > character rotates 90 degrees to face away > character enters full casual talking animation for about 0.5 seconds to say something else > character walks off. You know how The Sims were animated back in the year 2000? That's how Game Freak animate their games. It looks cheap and lazy. It's not an artistic choice either. It's just bad. These games aren't on a grid, and don't make any use of animation blending. It's truly a laughable effort.

I don't play Fire Emblem so the comparison is totally lost on me. But it sounds like you're saying that people shouldn't be complaining about SwSh when other games also look bad.

    4. Strong Guy

      Strong Guy

It definitely looks bad especially when one of their excuses for cutting a big portion of the dex was "graphics and quality animation"

    5. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Also what @Strong Guy said is hilariously true too. Most of the work for old Pokémon was already done for SuMo and Let's Go.

    6. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Well, it's not like I didn't expect these types of responses...

But no, it's not just Fire Emblem (Which is a headliner title too mind you)

I see constant comparisons made to games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, BotW, and Super Mario Odyessey. All three of these games I have played and all of which have their own graphical issues of their own. Yet, Pokemon is getting heat for not being up to par?

Now if you just personally do not like that it looks too similar to the 3DS games, I can't really say anything else to that. And yea...Game Freak was...pretty fucking stupid for saying that it was about animations, because now I feel its created a somewhat unrealistic expectation on the game that they were never going to meet.

But no, this isn't saying that Sword and Shield aren't allowed to be criticized, but that the things they're bring criticized for (graphics in this case) are pretty common for Switch titles in general by now.

    7. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Other games aren't without their graphical issues, but they're generally impressive or particularly nice to look at. Or they're not marred with other huge problems.

SwSh don't just have very subpar visuals, they've got subpar everything. If the graphics of SwSh were exactly the same but it didn't have the other issues concerning gameplay, content etc, people would be much more forgiving. But Game Freak have been very open about the decisions they've made for SwSh, and none of them really add up. Nothing looks like it justifies just SwSh are lacking so much content and look like little more than upscaled 3DS games. Pokémon has been feeling more and more phoned in with every new instalment. The Switch should be a huge step up in possibilities for the series after its been relegated to highly underpowered handhelds for its entire existence in the past. People are quite rightly finding a lot of faults, but Game Freak has launched a strange PR offensive to make people feel sorry for them and their workload.

And I'm going to say that SwSh's graphics simply aren't on the same level as most Switch games. They're definitely not on the same level as other first/second-party games either. Pokémon is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and one of Nintendo's flagships. These games are going to sell in excess of 10 million in a year, and that's a conservative estimate. Let's Go has collectively sold 11.3 million units in a year, and I'll be surprised if SwSh don't eclipse that. SwSh have no excuse have any cut corners.

Show me some Switch games that look as visually naff as SwSh. I've just been watching videos of FE:TH and it looks much, much better than SwSh.

    8. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

Super Mario Odyessey & BOTW are not only absurdly better animated, but just altogether better done then any mainline Pokemon game including the upcoming ones. How is this a question? Are you really trying to argue that the barely animated Pokemon models in SwSh are comparable to the minor problems in Super Mario Odyessey??? The difference is night and day.

    9. Kuzu

      Kuzu

But as you said, a lot of these "problems" would be overlooked had it not been for the PR diasters these games have turned into sadly.

Because everything I've seen from the game so far feels perfectly in line with an average Pokemon title, with a few QoL changes sprinkled throughout. But the situation with the cut Pokedex and Game Freak's PR statements have caused everyone to hyper focus on every flaw that was generally overlooked before. Everyone is showing their ass basically, justified or not. It actually is quite fascinating how much of disaster this has turned into for what ultimately may just be an average title in the end.

@Lord-Dreamerz This is subjective and I'm not going to sit here and nitpick every minor graphical issue other games have. This isn't me trying to convince you 'Sword and Shield are fine'. This is merely offering a different perspective than the common complaints.

    10. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

No, these problems wouldn't be overlooked if not for the PR disasters. I didn't say that. People would still be pissed about the bad graphics. Reception for the first trailer focused a lot on the game looking like an upscaled 3DS title, and thus is long before we knew about Dexit it the other PR disasters.

"Average Pokémon game" is a pretty low bar to set. The past two or three generations have had issues with graphics and gameplay that people are becoming less and less forgiving about. There are a few good QoL changes, and that's just about where the improvements, additions and changes end. With SwSh, we're getting the exact same deal yet again, except with some significant steps backwards. Dexit is the straw that broke the camels back.

People aren't forgiving the problems anymore because they can't justify them.

    11. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

      @Kuzu

This isn't really subjective unless you are just gonna pull the whole "everything in life is subjective" card. It is simply a fact how much better animated SMO & BOTW are compared to SwSh. It would be similar to saying a guy just T-posing & nothing else is equally as good a dancer compared to a pro-dancer. In general SMO & BOTW are amazing looking games regardless of not being perfect, in fact many people praise them highly for their visuals.

    12. Kuzu

      Kuzu

@Blue Blood If those were legitimate complaints from the debut trailer, than they were severely downplayed and only came into focus when the Pokedex situation came about.

I will agree the series was starting to run into graphical issues starting from XY however, so I'll concede to that. The PR issue is exacerbating a problem that was already there.

@Lord-Dreamerz  Literally google the common graphical glitches with those games I've mentioned and read how most of them are in mine with what people are saying about Pokemon.

Now if you still don't agree and think I'm just full of shit, fine. Move on and I'll just go about my business.

    13. Tornado

      Tornado

People were complaining that it looked like shit compared to something like XC2 virtually from announcement. People have forgotten that because Game Freak has spent the intervening time blowing limbs off, but from the start people were insisting that it would be fine because it should run much better than the games on the system that don't look like glorified Gamecube titles as a defense of how shit it always looked.

Though apparently Sw/Sh runs at 720p 30fps and is fucking loaded with pop-in despite running a bunch of 3DS assets, so...

    14. Kuzu

      Kuzu

XC2 runs like shit in handheld mode tho.

Not that it excuses this game mind you, but that game has it's own share of graphical issues

XC2 runs like shit in handheld mode tho.

What a coincidence. Sword and Shield runs like shit all the time.

720p30, on a game that looks like it came out in 2002, is not acceptable. 720p30, on a game loaded with stuff ported from a fucking 3DS game, is not acceptable. 720p30, on a game that has levels of graphics pop-in and stretched muddy textures last seen on PS2 launch games, is not acceptable. There are original Xbox games with 720p support that look better than this and run better than this. The entire previous console generation developers were chewed out when they debuted games that only ran at 720p30, and they rarely looked as bad as this. It's fucking absurd the leash Game Freak is given, how low everyone's standards are, that they can make a glorified 3DS game that meets the minimum possible performance standard of the previous console generation and they are given a pass because... What? They are too incompetent to expect more of? They are too lazy to even approach what other developers do in the system?

You can add whatever increasingly obvious lies from Game Freak's attempts at damage control over the summer on top of that to make it even more ridiculous that it looks as bad as it does; but even ignoring that game performance is just as much a part of image quality as raw visuals, and this game does neither worth a shit. That's despite Game Freak shitting out a game that looked all the world like upscaled Wii shovelware to "get accustomed to the hardware" last year.

    17. Celestia

      Celestia

Speaking as someone still interested in the game (not that I'd pick it up anyway since 1) no Switch and 2) I decided long ago to wait for the late gen rereleases lol), it looks blatantly worse than most other games on the system, any issues those games have isn't all that relevant. At best Three Houses comes to mind as looking worse in some areas.

That said it looks so much better than LG that I imagine it's only uphill from there, like going from XY/ORAS to SM lol.

    18. Kuzu

      Kuzu

@Tornado The reason is that people simply enjoyed the games, it's not that complicated.

Very few people ever held Nintendo games to the same graphical standards as the competition because the demographics for both groups are so wildly different.

The only reason people are focusing now is because the thing they enjoyed about the game (The Pokemon) is gone, so now everyone has decided graphics matter.

    19. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

People have always cared about the graphics. Nintendo games always get flack for being behind the times. SwSh don't look like like native Switch games; they look like native 3DS games hastily ported to the Switch. Whatever standard there is for a system as powerful/weak as the Switch is, SwSh fall well below it.

    20. Kuzu

      Kuzu

I should clarify that it's the first time they are getting criticized from their own userbase. Nintendo fans are pretty quick to defend anything Nintendo does, no matter how archaic it is.

So the fact that their own fans have turned on them should speak volumes on how bad things are.

    21. Tornado

This has already been pointed out to you as being false. Repeating it doesn't make it true.

People gave Let's Go a pass, sorta, because the excuse was that it was just Game Freak getting use to the hardware (that they charged money for). SwSh never got a pass. As soon as it was shown off it was criticized for being substandard compared to pretty much every other Nintendo game on the system.

Yes, people have gotten angrier at it since Dexit since it is clear now that the reasoning given for it was completely made up since the game still looks like garbage; but due to the leaks we've also been able to see actual gameplay and get technical details that makes it look significantly worse than the cherry picked things Game Freak has shown off to this point.

    22. Blue Blood

    24. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Ta. From the way this board is talking about it, I'm half expecting these games have a selection of 100 Pokémon, run at 360p handheld and to have literally nothing except what we've seen in the trailers.

I'm avoiding all the leaks so I don't want to know anything about the content of these games until I play them for myself. My expectations are pretty low, but I've seen enough and have been burned by the series enough times in the past to know that expectations should be tempered. I'll criticise then to no end for their failings. All I'm after is a solid new Pokémon experience, and that just means a decent main campaign with a decent selection of new Pokémon/forms to find out about. If there's aren't many new Pokémon/forms or the main campaign sucks for whatever reason, don't tell me. No opinions. I just want to treat these games as though there were no leaks.

So basically all the criticisms that I'm throwing at the game, the leaks and Dexit aren't influencing that. I've been vocal about the problems with the series since BW. Gen 5 to 6 to 7 saw the series' problems absolutely snowball, and that seems to be continuing with Gen 8. It's just taken a while for the fanbase to reach much of a consensus on this.

      Tornado

I've only read 720/30 in docked. I don't know what it does in handheld.

  14. Sonic X and Sonic Boom are the only cartoons based on the post-2000's era of Sonic aren't they?

I'm struggling to think back on which one I actually liked more...

    1. Tangled Jack

      Tangled Jack

Might be weird but I love all of them (besides the OVA and Mania Adventures) more than the 90s shows with Classic Sonic, and Underground which is 2000 I think.

    2. Wraith

      Wraith

I prefer the modern era of sonic story/lore wise but holy shit are AOSTH Satam so much better than X/Boom. It's not even a contest

    3. Tangled Jack

      Tangled Jack

Eh. Not my cup of tea, especially SatAM that has Sonic slapped in something else and AoStH the dumb and inconsistent masquarade. I know that it's like that because SEGA hadn't developed a proper image of Sonic back then but jeez. They did weird things in the 90s.

    4. Kuzu

      Kuzu

That's partially why I'm conflicted; X and Boom weren't good at all despite being based on my preferred version of Sonic lmao.

SATAM gets a lot of shit for being 90's as hell (and...yea, it is) and not being like the games, but hell...that worked to its strength.

    5. Wraith

      Wraith

As much as it would be nice to have an actual Sonic ass Sonic cartoon X and Boom are still fucking light years away from translating what I like about the series to animation even if they are technically "closer". At that point I just judge by which were more enjoyable to watch and the 90s cartoons win. They're WEIRD but more confident in what they try to do and stick the landing better.

Sonic X is like if you tried to make a Shonen action series on your bus fare and I have way to little tolerance for Boom's whole thing to even dig deep into what's wrong with it. I could barely make it through the first 10 eps.

    6. Sean

      Sean

Sonic is an actual character in the DiC cartoons unlike in X

    7. Kuzu

      Kuzu

X was so blatantly a kid's Anime show that it hurts and while I like Boom, all it really has going for it are just memes and nothing else. The entire show is just one big meme and the writers pat themselves on the back for being nothing but a meme.

SATAM and AOSTH have much stronger writing in general. Its a no contest.

  15. Fans: "I'm so glad Sonic Forces treats Knuckles with the respect he deserves as resistance leader"

Sonic Forces!Knuckles: "Ok, here's this hail mary plan I came up with two minutes ago, surely nothing can go wrong"

    1. Ferno

      Ferno

tails should've been the leader but nah

    2. Kuzu

      Kuzu

I'm just baffled how they made Knuckles the leader and went out of their way of showing why exactly it was a terrible idea lol.

And this is supposed to be a game with an anti-war message...

Knuckles literally committed a fucking war crime with that shit

    3. Zaysho

      Zaysho

Well, Knuckles appointing himself leader and being terrible at it is totally in-character for current Sega-Knuckles.

    4. Wraith

      Wraith

It's in character for current knuckles, and the one from 10 years ago, and the one before that

    5. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Its not so much that its out of character, so much that everyone else just went along with it...

Why did they even go along with it.

    6. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

okay so uh is nobody going to talk about the fact that knux recruited child soldiers or

    7. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Oh no, all those poor no named soldiers that hardly did shit onscreen regardless of who led them, and won't be mentioned again in the next game

    8. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

I'm sure they had extra lives.

    9. Wraith

      Wraith

Knuckles h8mself is a child soldier

Sonic started this when he let tails hang with him for the first time anyway

  16. You know, I find it incredibly funny how the situations with Sonic and Pokemon are kind of inverses of each other.

They both have untold potential, but have trouble achieving it. The difference is, Pokemon will still sell regardless since the brand is just that well known at the end of the day while Sonic can barely make ends meet with his games.

    1. Perkilator

      Perkilator

At least Sonic's community's toxicity right now isn't nearly as bad as the Pokémon community.

    2. Kuzu

      Kuzu

That's because the Sonic community is already so well known for being obnoxious that people just got used to it.

Pokemon has never really bore its fangs like this before.

  17. Based Sakurai telling it like it is about Terry.

  18. Man, how bad of a shipwright must be you to have a leak every single year.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Half the Pokemon. Double the Leaks.

  19. You'd think we, as a fanbase, could celebrate Sonic Mania's reception...but all it's done is split people's opinions further because its not a 3D game and none of the stuff people associate with them.

    1. PaulyBFromDa303

      PaulyBFromDa303

Can't please everybody, and it's unfortunate. It's gonna be that way with everything though. And more than just the Sonic fanbase, Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, even things like WWE and MythBusters and Ghostbusters and . . . uh . . . . Doorbusters or whatever.

Pop culture is a weird culture indeed XD

    2. Sean

      Sean

People like or don't like what they like or don't like and that's fine

    3. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

Some fans are envious of Mania's success, who want a new adventure game or boost game with same kind of excellent quality.

    4. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I have no problems in saying that those special stages have the best 3D gameplay this series has seen since Gens.

  20. Wait, why are we talking about Sonic Colors all of a sudden?

    1. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Cuz I brought it up a couple of hours ago.

  21. You ever wonder if Sega just said "Fuck it" with Shadow and just decided to change his entire character to justify his continued existence rather than trying to use his story.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i'm really not looking to get into a whole big discussion about it but tbh i'm still not sure what has supposedly been changed

    2. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Tbf the Adventure era of games have never actually been referenced in a game narrative since... well, 06. Each one of the "main" cast seen since then have really been nerfed of backstory because of it so imo, it isn't just a Shadow issue (though he is one of the characters that is the most hurt by it).

    3. Tangled Jack

      Tangled Jack

It's the same as the Master Emerald and Angel Island, still canon but it's not relevant anymore since they have "moved on" from those backstories. Shadow himself moved on.

    4. Wraith

      Wraith

yeah. they've decided to make the basis of his character revolve around Sonic because they don't understand why hes there otherwise.

Sonic and Shadow fighting attracts a lot of attention and calls to mind his most iconic appearance too, so thats a plus

    5. Kuzu

      Kuzu

@Diogenes As Wraith pointed out, they changed his character to basically revolve around his rivalry with Sonic rather than any personal motivation on his part.

    6. Wraith

      Wraith

I mean to people who didn't like Shadow before this is just an improvement/fat trimming so there's no point in trying to convince anybody.

I just hope people make enough noise about this that Sega changes things back to how they were.

    7. Diogenes

      Diogenes

but he's dark sonic, the rivalry is built into his basic concept, and it's always been an element even if it wasn't always the main focus. and after he threw away his past at the end of ShtH what other personal motivation has he ever had? and i don't feel like anything he's done recently has even had much to do with his rivalry with sonic anyway; they barely interact in forces, and while they've fought in IDW it's due to disagreements rather than just because they're rivals

    8. Wraith

      Wraith

It's definitely a regional thing. In Forces which was developed in Japan he mostly acts how you'd expect him but in stuff like Boom and IDW he becomes more needlessly confrontational

    9. Kuzu

      Kuzu

He was fine in Forces, but he doesn't really factor into the main plot there either...so its weird. And then you have the fact that it was Sega themselves who mandated Shadow to act the way he did in IDW.

There's nothing wrong with focusing on his rivalry with Sonic, but I feel like its come at the expense of his likable traits and he's just needlessly confrontational and aggressive, with nothing else to really balance it out.

    10. Diogenes

      Diogenes

confrontational and aggressive seems pretty on-brand for shadow to me, and thus far IDW has been so packed with characters that only a few of them have gotten to show off much beyond their "default". if we got a whole shadow-focused arc and it was all about fighting sonic i'd get the criticism, but he's popping his head into these big arcs that aren't specifically about him and trying to get his business done in a pretty typically shadow-like way before things move on to everyone else's business. it just doesn't seem like the kind of fundamental shift people are getting upset about.

    11. Wraith

      Wraith

I'll admit that I'm suspicious  after hearing about the mandates then, since I didn't think anything was amiss the first time it happened.

More Shadow stories that don't boil down to these character traits would jist be pretty nice right now, I guess.

    12. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Its "on-brand" but it doesn't exactly make him likable either; I don't wanna root for him or feel bad when something bad happens to him, which I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be feeling about one of the primary heroic characters.

You don't even need a Shadow centric arc for this, just give him a trait that's not a negative or makes the situation worse than it already was.

    13. Diogenes

      Diogenes

maybe i'm weird then because my favorite characters are almost always some degree of trash idiot and shadow being kind of a dick and his attitude fucking things up is more interesting to me than a lot of what he's been otherwise.

    14. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Like Wraith said, if you didn't like Shadow before, then this is nothing but an improvement for you and everyone else. So there's no real point in me trying to convince you otherwise.

I just hope whoever has been doing this to him actually can be bothered to remember that he isn't just "furry Vegeta" and that he does have traits beyond just being angry and confrontational all of the time.

    15. Wraith

      Wraith

I advocate for more flawed characters. If Shadow's portrayal was more evenhanded and humorous than in the dreamcast era I'd be alright with that. This is just too one-note and honestly OOC for me.

This might just come from how IDW is structured though, with characters dropping in for one issue and disappearing for a year.

    16. Kuzu

      Kuzu

The lack of nuance is the biggest issue for me; flawed characters are fine, but being a rounded character means you need more than just one or two traits. Shadow's character now is just "Angry and fights with Sonic" which really doesn't make me interested in him as a person compared to his much more dynamic character before.

The simpler characterization works in a humorous setting, like Boom. I don't mind it in Boom, because his overly edgy attitude is the entire joke and you're not meant to take it seriously.

If you're writing a story that you want the audience to take seriously like the current IDW arc, then you need to have a bit more nuance in how you write.

The funny thing is that I don't really see this problem for other characters; they're allowed to be flawed but have likable traits to balance them out like what was done with Vector in the latest issue.

It's only with Shadow that writers just seem to throw their hands up. Nobody really seems interested in writing him beyond just being Sonic's angry rival, but he's too popular of a character to drop so he makes gracious appearances and then is swiftly removed.

  22. Nobody better ever talk shit a out Ash ever again after today.
