Given the absolute negative reception to it, sweeping the old design under the rug makes sense.

I don't hate it myself. In fact, I quite like it at the right times, and think it's adequate for what it's trying to do. His face still isn't Sonic though, and that's the killer. That's what makes me think "I hate that it's still not Sonic".
Literally nothing about the movie design is better than the game design. And it's funny that this is is Movie Sonic version 2. All they did is make him look more like his game counterpart and boom it's an instant improvement. They didn't need to redesign him at all.

It's the eyes. Sonic's eyes are the wrong shape, and it completely changes his face. He looks more child like and lacks the effortlessly cool approach of his usual look, instead opting for a much cuter look. It goes to show just how effectively designed his eyes actually are in his game design. Even if they didn't want to use the mono-eye (which I think they should have), they should have giving him more angled brows, instead of the rounded ones. He's basically got Tails' eyes.

Well, it's...definitely less horrifying. Bumped it up from "utter disaster" to "technically watchable". Sonic's design and animation still look a little awkward at times but he looks about as good as you could expect from a misguided CGI/live action mashup adaptation of an old cartoony property, certainly miles better than the horrible little gremlin they had before. That's about the best I can say about it, though; Sonic seems like a hyperactive kid and...weirdly kind of helpless at the start? Like okay this is kind of an origin story, this is a younger and less experienced Sonic, but it's a little weird to go from, say, SA2's "I'm gonna leap from a helicopter, evade military robots and the world's most reckless truck driver, and take down a war mech without breaking a sweat" to "I'm going to hide under a table from one guy in a suit and his little egg drone", especially when he's clearly already been doing superhuman stunts just for fun. Though I guess given the rest of the trailer that won't last too long so whatever. Otherwise it kinda feels like Sonic's more a vehicle for gags and action scenes rather than a character. Carrey's Robotnik is still so-so; he's not much like any existing Eggman/Robotnik but I at least appreciate that the energy he's bringing has a similar vibe at times. Tom...continues to exist, for some reason. GHZ looks nice but mostly makes me wish the whole movie was there.
Still not something I care enough to go see in theaters, but when it makes it to Netflix or whatever, yeah, I'll give it a watch, probably.

Not really feeling it still lol. I almost thought the leaked design was okay, but tbh I hate haaaaate how Sonic looks in movement (not saying the previous design was better, it was a lot worse!) and he looks more like a generic CG cartoon character than Sonic the Hedgehog at some parts. I'm still not into the plot or the jokes, either. I'm not gonna feel bad sitting this one out.

I'm not one to condone outrage culture, but it was a necessary evil in this case as there wouldn't have been a change otherwise. In hindsight, I'm glad people turned on this film from the first trailer because it showed just how tone deaf Paramount was.

Although it has to be said that a child bridge character would more likely be annoying, ala Chris Thorndyke. Tom looks like pretty boring, very uninteresting and uninspired character, but serves his purpose. A child would shift the film in a different direction. It's almost like... Maybe a live action film where Sonic comes to our world and hangs out with regular humans was... a bad idea maybe? Whodda thunk it

Sonic is kinda cute now when the camera or clothes are hiding his body.
It's still a movie where he travels with a cop around the midwest. I'm still not fucking watching it, but gotta give Tyson props for being a fucking miracle worker once again and making this movie sellable.

Well, that was a turnaround, still not sold, but the humour hit a lot better. At least, when Sonic acted like Sonic, a lot of the character driven humour actually works fairly well, and Sonic is actually animated well and looks nice. I really like how he’s constantly doing something now. Compared to the original trailer, where Sonic was fairly stiff in the car, here he’s always moving or playing with something, it’s fun.
I still think it’ll be bad, but the trailer bumped it up to “worth checking out when the dvd releases” for me, which is kind of the same case with Teen Titans Go to the Movies.
idk guys, it’s like when you actually make things similar to the games in music, locale, and character design, people might respond a little better to it as if it’s something they already liked :V

The old trailer was really bad in every sense. The new trailer is generic Hollywood adaptation. It looks fine. Passable. Inoffensive. Sonic himself looks really quite cool. I'm ready to not hate this movie and instead just ignore it as something that'll be forgotten in a few years time amongst the myriad of not very good video game film adaptations. At least it will no longer be the flagship for bad live action/realistic redesigns.

@Blue Blood The tweet the article talked about called Redditors c*nts.
I kinda feel numb to the whole Dexit thing, to be honest. It just feels like the logical conclusion to something that has build up over the past few generations, something that just had to happen at some point, and now it did. People criticize the same stuff over and over, and nothing changes, despite it often being something relatively simple (like a difficulty select). The whole Dex Thing is just the straw that broke the camel's back.
It's especially weird since, looking at the competitive side, GameFreak has made it super easy to get your favorite Pokemon to be like you want it to, especially with the new mints they introduced in this game. Each game in the series kinda improved on that. So they obviously see the feedback and react to it, which is great, but it weirdly only seems to apply to that aspect, while people who are more interested in the whole package kinda seem to get ignored? Things like taking away the EXP-Share completely just seems tonedeaf - it honestly seems to me at points that they think that the older fans are just interested in the competitive aspect and cater their main campaign to solely young audiences.
GameFreak has brought me some of my fondest childhood memories, but I feel like the whole criticism they've gotten is pretty warranted. Not the absolutely shitty pestering of the private accounts of some of the devs, obviously, that's just sick, but most of the criticism I've seen was pretty darn warranted - often not packaged nice, but warranted.
Let's see how Sw/Sh is gonna do. I'm more than willing to give it a shot and see if they can win me back over. Maybe they made some changes I'm super down for. I don't know. I'll see later this week.

Kuzu reacted to Blue Blood in Pokémon Sword & Shield (Coming November 15th, 2019)
I continue to get more and more excited for the release of Sword and Shield, despite loathing Gen VII and the fact that SwSh don't look like they're going to deliver on all of the most important ways. In fact, they look downright lazy in some aspects, such as when it comes to visuals. Can't really explain my unfounded optimism. I think it's just because I'm craving a new Pokémon experience. I guess I've come to accept that Pokémon has moved in a direction that's not what I would personally like to see, and am just taking it for what it is.
And I'm still undecided on who to start with. In terms of first playthroughs, the only fire type that I've ever picked is Litten. Otherwise it's usually Water and occasionally Grass. I really don't like Scorbunny so that's definitely not on the cards. Sobble was my first choice but Grookey is growing on me a lot. I might just have to get both. Don't suppose I could trouble someone to help me transfer Grookey from one game to another on Friday? Lol

I wouldn't call Amy "cringy", but she's certainly not as plucky and upbeat as she usually is. Granted, the situation they're in is incredibly shit so there's that. But she's definitely more subdued and lower key.

I'm on the fence if that's a good change or not.

Kuzu got a reaction from DaddlerTheDalek in Tails: between success and disservice of the character
Boom actually handles Tails the best if I'm honest; because its not a video game, the action doesn't have to center on Sonic all of the time, so the cast are actually allowed to develop independent of him. He's still the most grounded of the cast, but he has quirks that never get spotlighted in the games. He's not just a boy genius, but an extremely socially awkward nerd. His inventions crap out as many times as they work, and it's clear he's not outgoing as Sonic or Knuckles in terms of attitude. But that makes him so much more of an endearing character compared to his video game counterpart.

As a primer for what to probably actually expect from Terry, he's almost always been explicitly a rushdown character. He has limited ways to damage you from a distance that aren't easily punishable, but if he gets close he usually can be played so he combos fast and hard. Because of that, there's a bit of prediction required of your opponent to use him most effectively; and he absolutely excels at corner trapping, so it will be interesting to see how he's adapted to a game where that is very rarely a thing. Most of his normal attacks are fast, several of them hit multiple times and can be comboed to each other.

Power Wave is usually slower than your typical Shoto fireball to come out even if the speed tends to be similar, and it's explicitly ground-based so much easier to dodge (SNK games in general made it a point to nerf and downplay fireballs, frequently even restricting them to super moves or limited distance). It's main use is as part of a combo rather than a move to zone opponents. It was also very rare that it went full screen.

Rising Tackle has almost always been an explicitly vertical anti-air, meaning it's ability to be flow-charted like Ken or Ryu's DP is extremely limited in comparison unless whatever attack you're countering is right next to you. It's also almost always a charge move, so you can't spam it nearly as much as them either; and frequently is most effective as a combo-ender instead of an attack by itself against a stationary opponent (since it also doesn't have that much invincibility).

Crackshoot has more horizontal motion and is usually workable as an anti-air, but can be punished way harder than any DP ever has been since it it very rarely has any invincibility and most of Terry's hitbox is exposed behind it.

Burn Knuckle is highly punishable if you try to use it from a great distance to attack (as opposed to using it to close space), needs to be timed tightly to work as an anti-air; but usually is fantastic as a combo-ender since it is easy to transition to and always knocks down.

Power Dunk is decent as anti-air if you time it perfect and has a decent amount of horizontal range, but it is also highly punishable and far more effective if you connect with it early on in the move as it's still going up. This is especially true in games where if you only connect on the lower part it does damage but also whiffs. Its main use is also as a combo-finisher, but it has quicker charge up and is generally more invincible at the start than Crack Shoot.

    (this move wasn't in CvS2 don't @ me)
Power Charge is a fast close range move that usually knocks a character up (but sometimes just pushes them back slightly and stuns), does basically no damage but is explicitly designed to allow a temp stun that you can combo/juggle into. This is the move you use to start a combo or link basic move combo into a special. If Terry's Rising Tackle is a DP motion in Smash like it was in KoF '96-'98 and this move is included as well, watch the fuck out.

Power Geyser is Terry's original super. It's a big fuck you attack that even back when SNK were assholes about input motions was easy and quick to use. Functionally it works very well as an anti-air making Terry very dangerous to jump in against when he has it charged, and it does a huge amount of damage whether you hit them on the ground or not. The higher power one hits three times, and has a lot (way more than the above GIF implies) horizontal movement that can hit all three times if timed correctly. Hugely punishable in some games since it comes out well in front of him, but also quick to come out and usually possible to combo into.

    ARE YOU OKAY!?

Very fast, very easy input, lots of horizontal motion, usable as an anti-air (though outside of Garou only half of the attack will hit in that case), usually can be comboed into. Not that much damage unless the entire thing hits, but a fantastically satisfying move to land which (other than KoF 2003) always feels very powerful:

So at the end of the day what does this mean for Smash?
