  1. I swear, this fanbase hates any idea that is deemed a "failure" and shows a stubborn unwillingness in actually trying to salvage older ideas. It was "bad", so it's gotta be thrown out for a new idea. It's like buying a new sports car every time the old one no longer works.

a new sports car is actually good when you first get it

a lot of the things this series has done...were not

I mean Boom was a failure tho...

that's not a good analogy but the amount of toxicity toward the series even within the fanbase is insane to the point of being comical

i haven't liked the games since 2000, hate all the stories, characters, art direction, soundtracks and mechanics, but they should listen to me instead of the fans anyway because sonic will be GOOD finally if they do

And what about the bad ideas, as opposed to just the poorly executed ones? Ever since the series took the jump to 3D back with SA1, it's mostly been a mixture of bad ideas and good ideas executed poorly. There have been very few good ideas that have been consistently executed well. Most of the good ideas that got good execution at some point have stagnated or gone down hill. Heck, I can't think of any that have gotten better recently. When everything has been going pretty steadily down hill for over a decade, you lose interest in salvage and just want to forget about everything bad until something good comes along to change.

SEGA's not had any sports cars for a long time. The made a kind of alright low end car a while back, but drove it through potholes and ran the engine dry, but they still keep insisting you drive it.

Honestly, all of this shit is exactly why talking about this series is so fucking exhausting; nobody wants to listen to each other, or compromise on anything. We say we like this idea or concept and then someone else comes in and is like "No it fucking sucks lol" and then it just goes back and forth until they both shut up until it starts back up again.

In case you couldn't tell, I really fucking hate this series sometimes and part of me just wishes it would just die and never come back so I don't have to see it anymore.

Honestly I'm all for improving what we have instead of bringing yet more one-off villains, in this case. Use the team aspect, don't make it just Zavok because that's boring and lame, I get it he's the most tolerable of the Zeti, but what if they worked as a team?

In my experience, usually a “bad idea” in this fandom translates to “I don’t like this thing that others might find potential in,” so I’m more inclined to believe that’s not always said in good faith in many cases.

The biggest irony in the logic is that a lot of people subscribe to the idea that “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” yet when something is broken, rather than apply the reverse they’d rather go the other way and throw it out.

I don’t know what you learn from that if you stop or move on without actually bother to understand why the attempt when wrong, even if you kept at it a hundred times.

I figured the Sonic Movie taught us a little better than that after it did the exact opposite and actually fixed what they broke and showed that you can succeed if you’re willing to make a better attempt.

Here's my take: I'm normally for whatever idea you can do as long as the execution is good. Problem is with this series most of it turns out to be bad. And even when they spend years trying to get it right they're never perfecting it and why even bother at that point?

    9. Kuzu

Given the fact that some people still hate the movie on principle despite the "fix", I'm not really inclined  to believe that last part.

This fandom is broken and mostly filled with cynical and bitter older fans who are set in their ways to try and compromise with each other on anything. Like Wraith said, it's absolutely fucking toxic and exhausting to be around.

I can't even say I like something without someone chiming saying that it sucks or "not worth the time"; I'm so fucking tired of having to justify the shit that I like about this series. I've never experienced this in any other fandom in my 26 years of living, and makes me really understand why people on the outside think we're all insane.

I would consider those who still don't like the movie or IDW as minorities, personally, because those are actually popular and get credit for being really good, so my stance is that only the games and their writing suck, the shorts and other non-game material is pretty good, I know the games are Sonic's main thing, I still enjoy the rest more, maybe I'm the minority, I dunno.

    11. Kuzu

Well really, it depends on which do you put more faith in; fandom opinion, or public opinion.

As someone that has taken a decent break from discussing Sonic on the internet, I have really no idea how exhausting it must be going through these things over and over again. I don't know what it was like talking about the mistakes of Sonic Forces here. I will say though that in my personal opinion, I'd like to see somebody other than Sonic Team try and make a 3D Sonic game... and not one that is a spin-off. The only company that came close to that was Red Button Studio and SEGA screwed them over.

I just don't trust Sonic Team that much anymore, and I really don't blame them all that much. I know Sonic is what they're named after, but it must be exhausting working on the same project over and over again. I know they still do the Puyo Puyo games... but really, what was the last game they worked on that wasn't Sonic or Puyo Puyo? It must be creatively exhausting working on the same things all the time. Maybe I'm just assuming things and they absolutely love working on Sonic, but I'm just saying. If I write a story or something, and only make endless sequels to said story, then I'm going to grow really sick of those characters and run out of ideas what to do with those characters. I'd say it's probably the same for Sonic Team.

I'm sure this has been spoken about a ton, but I haven't been here in five years, and I'm sure it's not a brand new idea to have somebody work on a 3D Sonic game that isn't Sonic Team. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to salvage old ideas and make them good again, but Sonic Team is probably exhausted and just wants to move onto the next thing after years and years of pushing out mediocre Sonic projects. A new developer should take those ideas and try to do something with them, while putting in things they love about Sonic as well. Just my thoughts.

I'd like a remake of Billy Hatcher if Sonic Team wanted to try something different.

@Kuzu if that’s the case, then their principles are messed up.

I don't hate the movie, but just dislike because my problems went beyond the design of Sonic. I hoped it wouldn't be generic, then it looked generic, then I got a bad feeling. I was open for the movie to surprise me, but I didn't have high hopes. Finally, watching the movie showed me that, yeah, it was a generic live action adaptation of a children's property.

Sonic Team is also working on a new Sakura Wars, but I don't know what else. If they can take a break from Sonic and come back with new ideas, I'd be all for it. But Sonic is a multi-million dollar franchise that I don't think SEGA is willing to let take a break. Otherwise, I'd say to get in fresh minds who are passionate about the franchise and really want to bring in new ideas.

To me it sounds more like you're describing Sonic Team. They try something new, then never use it again or butcher it, regardless if it was actually a good idea or not.

Momentum based grinding? Was only ever in Sonic Adventure 2, then it was jumping/skipping nonsense in Heroes/Shadow, then automated conveyor belt + boosting.

Controlling multiple characters? After Heroes, which was a flawed but decent starting point, they only ever tried a half-assed attempt in Forces, instead of fixing the issues with it. Boom wasn't by Sonic Team so for me it doesn't count.

Enemies that are more of a challenge and require some strategy to destroy? After Sonic 2006, they dropped that in favor of cannon fodder enemies used for boosting. I guess that's the only positive I can say about Lost World, is it had enemies that required some strategy to defeat.

Making the other characters playable in 3D? They tried that like what, 4 times in the 20 years of 3D Sonic's history? Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, 2006 with the whole "amigo" thing, then never again? Once again, Boom wasn't by Sonic Team so for me it doesn't count.

Sonic Team ditched so many ideas I approved of that were new in favor of lame, inferior things. There are so many things I want Sonic Team to go back to and improve upon.
