  1. You know, you can really tell the age of a Sonic fan by their reaction to Sonic & the Black Knight: most will probably call it "the last great Sonic game" by virtue of it's story.

    But listening to a place like Retro's opinions to it, and they were way more ambivalent towards it aside from generic stuff like the music.

      It's certainly not a GREAT Sonic game IMO, but it's one that I feel is the last one Sonic Team put heart into in terms of story and characters.

      And then there's me, where I think it's not a very good videogame, but is also probably tied with Colors as the best Kishimoto game, if not even beating it.

      No, I didn't feel any remorse in saying that.

      I remember reading the NP article in college and just got really excited to play as Knuckles (kind of) again.

      Even as disappointing as the game was, I can appreciate how they tried to improve on Secret Rings. I don't like the style of gameplay but it and Unleashed seem like the last Sonic Team games that had any real ambition behind them.

      @Bobnik what does that mean?

      I can never tell if SatSR/BK were driven by creativity or desperation. Like, whether the various people working on them really wanted to explore a bunch of fun new ideas that went against the grain or if they were so exhausted with the series that they went out of their way to make something that was a tenuously Sonic as they could get away with. Either way, I always appreciated how left field BK was. And that's after SR was already pretty left field itself.

      Still though... It was so obviously going to be a disaster from the start. Whilst there are things to potentially like about the game, it's not even close to being fun. It's not a good game.

      Oh and the story, and script and characterisation are all way overrated

      A lot of really cool ideas built on top of broken core mechanics

      That seems like Sonic's M.O.

      Black Knight and Secret Rings just kind of feel embolic of the entire series; a potentially cool idea hampered by real poor mechanics.

      I honestly don't blame people for having such differing opinions; people like it for what it COULD have been, while others hate it for what it actually is.

      Nope, I would give most 3D Sonic games more credit than SATSR/BK.

      @Zaysho Be careful, some people hate the "A" word.

      It’s not a good game but I do greatly appreciate how much it was trying to do and the stuff it did get right (story, other playable characters, setting, ect.). For me, it really was the last Sonic game where ST did try in every category. A sense of ambition that’s just been absent in almost every game sense.
