I think from now on any discussion of "Sonic isn't popular in Japan!" needs to be reminded both that merch sold well enough in the 90s in arcades and also that the Megadrive was the least sold console of its generation in Japan, and same with the Dreamcast, while the Saturn had very little Sonic.

There's all these fandom theories about "Japan doesn't like animal characters" and so on but at the end of the day I'd say a much bigger factor is "Japan's love of Sega is for the Saturn and Arcades, the specific platforms Sonic didn't have a good representation on"

I mean when the series constantly squanders its own potential and underperforms its kind of hard to not be a little cynical.
Forces was the last game released, which doesn't exactly instill confidence in the direction of the series.
The uncertainty is what's driving the cynicism unfortunately

Kuzu reacted to Diogenes in Potential reinterpretations of the Sonic universe in the Movie verse.
Admittedly I still haven't seen the movie so I don't have a full grasp on its version of things but I don't really feel this one working. Movie Sonic had to do some growing compared to most other versions but by the end of the movie he's done some pretty wild stunts and beaten Robotnik so he's got some experience under his belt, and Tails...well, I don't exactly get the impression that he's a battle-hardened 8 year old from that post-credits scene. If I had to pitch something off the cuff, maybe take a "don't meet your heroes" angle, initially? Tails has presumably been jumping worlds looking for Sonic for a while, he could've built up his idea of Sonic to the point that the real thing doesn't measure up. That'd allow for some friction between them, which could be resolved by Tails having his expectations tempered a bit but also Sonic stepping up and proving that Tails wasn't entirely wrong to look up to him.
Bringing in Metal or Shadow is definitely an option, and would be a natural payoff to Robotnik having that quill. Metal would probably be the better choice; as long as you've established Sonic and Robotnik you've got everything you need to tell "the" Metal Sonic story, while Shadow would have to be entirely rewritten and I imagine it'd end up something like Metal's story wearing Shadow's face. I could still see them trying it just because of Shadow's popularity and it being hard to imagine another opportunity to bring him into the movieverse, though.
e: well, thinking about it, it might not be too hard to find an explanation for Shadow; movie Sonic's got big flashy "superpowers", decide on what the source of them is supposed to be and say "yeah this Shadow guy's got that too" and have them fight about it. Bigger issue I guess is that there's probably only going to be room for one doppelganger before the movie's inexplicable success burns out and having Robotnik make one using the quill is so obvious a way to go.

I know you're trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I'm fairly certain OP doesn't actually care about having an actual discussion about this and just wants to wank about Shadow's power level like most fourteen year old Shonen fans do about their favorite characters.

The nature of the Sonic fanbase means that no matter what Sega does, somebody isn't going to be happy with it. It's just a fact that we should probably expect regardless of the actual content of the next game. You can tell people to "have lower expectations", but that's not going to deter people at all who have made up their minds on the type of game that they want, nor is it going to change their reactions when they don't get what they want. So the only thing you can do is to just make your own judgement call and see what happens.
I personally don't care what we get so as long as its well made, I'm not really asking for much here. I would PREFER a return to the older Adventure formula, and the things that were established there, but nine times out of ten, I know I'm not going to get that. So I can only hope that we do get is at least decent.

As much as this is a reality for basically every franchise , it's something that happens even when a Sonic game is indisputably bad or indisputably great. There's not a way to fix this and it never will. Like you, I would take any kind of Sonic game if it's great, 2D, 3D, racing, party, what I'm really tired isn't the the genre of these games, but the low quality of them. It's not even a matter of polish anymore, the last games are pretty stable and glitch free, but they're just lackbuster and short in content...

Kuzu reacted to Cosmos Rogue in Shadow's dynamic with other characters and how to improve it
Shadow is an anti-hero. Anti-heroes are defined by their disregard for the rules or what other people think; they'll always do what they think is right. It's a particularly liberating power fantasy, one that eschews social responsibility. But that raises the question: what motivates someone who doesn't care much about society to save it? Anti-heroes need friends, family, loved ones more than other types of heroes. If you look at other major pop culture anti-heroes, you'll see that they all have personal relationships that drive them. Han Solo isn't going to let his buddy Luke fight the Empire by himself, Jack Bauer will go to any length to save his family, Batman wants to make sure no child has to watch their parents be murdered. Shadow doesn't have any of that right now. We know that Maria told him to protect humanity, but you can't regurgitate that plot point every single game you use Shadow in just for the benefit of people who haven't played decades old games - never mind that humans barely appear in the Sonic franchise anymore.
Fixing Shadow means toning down his anti-social tendencies and just letting him have friends again. He doesn't need to have many - Rouge and Omega would be enough - but having any friends would make him a believable character again, and not just this trite example of an anti-hero that he has been for so long.

I was actually worried about them throwing out Gen 4's level design so this is one way to avoid that I guess? This might go too far in the other direction of defeating the point of a remake, but I'll wait to see what new Qol features/stuff they add before I say that. I'm a little bummed out I won't get to walk around a 'to scale' Jubilife City or Mt Coronet though.

The chibi style is cute. It looks kinda basic, but so does that other game or really most of the other Pokemon games released prior. Diamond and Pearl is a childhood favorite of mine but I also remember it being one of the least impressive DS games out there technically. I just don't expect much from this series on that front.  Not trying to silence people arguing that they should do better(they definitely should!) but I dunno. Not a priority for me as long as it runs okay.

Pokemon Legends using the same angles and gentle piano accompaniment as the BOTW trailer had me dying. Might as well own it I guess. I'm most interested in shifting the goal away from gyms to "complete the pokedex". There's a lot more potential for completely free form progression with that premise. Sticking with Sinnoh means no need to worry about new Pokemon either, allowing them to put effort into other parts of the game. The performance issues are more of a turn off than the visual style so I hope they're going to iron those out. I'm not sold on it yet but something really cool could come from these changes.

What's kind of funny about these remakes is that they remind me a lot of what was done with Link's Awakening. It's not a bad thing, per se, in fact I find it kind of novel to go back to the oldschool overhead look... however it's such a bizarre choice after years of what remakes actually were in the context of this series that I have no idea what to even make of them. On one hand, cool, I like Diamond/Pearl but on the other... was anybody asking for a slavish recreation of it versus creating a new game out of SwSh's engine like previous gens had already done? Nothing about this makes sense to me other than answering a demand people were making for the last seven years since ORAS came out. And it falls into the same issue where third version content is presumably either cut or severely diminished despite those being the definitive versions.
Like, I dunno, it looks fine and I think I'd enjoy it more than SwSh (which I didn't buy) on the basis that it's literally a game I already liked, but I just expect way more from this franchise and it keeps giving the bare minimum with its mainline entries since XY. This was acceptable during the 3DS era but they're on a home console charging $60 a pop now and it's getting harder to justify supporting these games especially on a system that offers so many other RPGs. And I can't help but feel a little put off knowing this is helmed by the group that developed Home.
Legends at least looks interesting but I'm going to be extremely cautious about it until I see more. I like the concept and everything but it's a Game Freak game and I already saw what early hype got me last time.

I feel like after the backlash that SwSh got, it makes sense that they would want to distance themselves from that artstyle. I thought SwSh looked fine, and could use some touch ups, but after that shitshow, It makes sense they would move away from it. I'm....not a fan of this artstyle personally, looks like its trying too hard to be faithful while being 3D, so the result looks like an awkward mesh of the two. Kind of like Gen 6's weird ass sprites.

Legends is legit though, keeping an eye on that.

I've been out of Pokemon for a while now, but Legends...well, it's at least got my curiosity. Real-time action/adventure "hunting" has the potential to be a lot more engaging than RPG menuing, but I need to see more before I can judge the execution; it seems like battling is an entirely separate system from catching, so if catching is just action rolls and throwing balls it may not stay interesting for very long. Also the ~5 FPS pokemon do not look great but performance is something to worry about later.
Remakes are remakes, whatever. They look fine but gen 4 is where I burnt out so I'm not really interested in going back.

I do like how Evan is a bit more of a slow burner  in terms of storytelling, and the focus is more on the setup than getting straight into the action. This issue served two purposes of integrating Belle into the cast, and setting up just what the hell is this Tower that Eggman has built. I'm still not completely sold on Belle yet, but it's clear they're trying to build up this mystery surrounding her origins, and Tangle is fun as usual; she's really just an adrenaline junkie isn't she. Still don't know what the deal with this tower is, or Eggman is actually trying to do, but it's just nice to see Sonic, Tails, and Amy together, a very underrated trio that is.

I still don't exactly care about the Deadly Six, but I did like what Bad Guys did with Zavok so I can see myself tolerating them if they're done well.

But man, first impressions really are everything; the Zeti had such a lackluster and poor introduction that it's basically colored their perceptions in the entire fanbase. It really does feel like how Silver was (and still is to an extent) treated way back when 06 came out. Your first impression is important and it tends to stick with you.
Even if Silver is in a much better place now, he's still nowhere near on Shadow's level as he was in his debut outside of the Metal Virus climax, which I appreciated Ian doing for him.

That doesn't even work because X isn't an alternate design, he is explicitly a different character from the original Mega Man. And X is from the future, and never interacts with OG at all.

If people want to interpret the story with Sonic and Shadow as "never defy the protagonist ever", fine but that's such a reductive way to seeing it and doesn't really say anything.  The premise was inherently flawed from the beginning, and could only end in the way it did, otherwise it would simply break the narrative of the series.
Even Archie had no solid answer for this, and outright confirmed that the multiverse straight up enforces the status quo that Sonic has to fight Eggman no matter what, and that will never actually change long term.

If Flynn is frustrated by that, then he's working on the wrong series.

I wanted them to move on after the first pass. I got a little wary at the idea of them doing more. A third pass would be pretty upsetting. Sakurai doesn't have much more time left to make games and I'd hate for it all to go to Smash Bros.

The roster felt complete long before Ultimate was even a thing. The fans just kept nitpicking and convincing themselves something was missing. Every time a long requested character got in they just moved to the next in line. Every time a character got reworked fans asked about some other character. The only way to complete Smash Bros is to stop working on it.

If I'm honest, I'm against any more DLC passes just because I want the devs to move on lol
They've been at it for over four years since they probably had to jump straight from Smash 4 to Smult after Corrin was released. It's time to give them a break and let this game run its course for the rest of the gen. Of course, I got my literal Holy Grail character so it's hard for me to complain if the train stops with this pass too. I would've been happy if it ended on pass 1 as well, honestly. I wouldn't have gotten exactly what I wanted but even then it'd been hard to complain.
It'd probably be a licensing nightmare, but I kinda just want Smult to be ported over to the next successive gen and then get new content and improvements (especially online) added then. I don't know if that's feasible but it's something I'd like to see because the game's had something for everyone both in base and in DLC that I can't see anyone being ready to let go of it with the next entry. It can really only get better down the line.
