  1. I've been playing a bunch of Sonic and Shadow's levels in 2006 and I have many questions about how the controls / moveset got from SA2 to this

    1. Sean

      Sean

      - why is the spin dash so useless, and why can I only use it while standing still

      - why does Sonic have zero forward momentum when using the bounce attack

      - why are the right and top face buttons still unused for actions

      - what's up with the homing attack taking 10 million years to accomplish

      - why does Sonic shoot in a straight line when using the air dash (I ask the same thing for the boost games)

Sonic looks like he just learned for the first time what Hitler did in WW2.

Apparently Jacques has a history of harassing other composers, specifically ones that he feels are treading on "his" territory, and his stint against Tee was nothing new.

Maybe it would've been more preferred that he spoke out about the harassment sooner. Although part of me feels he kept it all private cause he thought no one would believe him. With false accusations abundant, I get why he would just until Jacques ended up making his bias public before revealing he acted that why in first place.

Not really the best choice, but I can kinda relate to Bentley if that's what he felt.

It also stinks that Sega didn't do squat about the harassment either.

    9. JezMM

      JezMM

@Supah Berry This is pretty much exactly why people come out with stories like this after the fact.  They don't feel safe to do so at the time  - either due to concerns about belief, job security, etc.  Once the antagonistic party presents themselves as such in public - making them less defensible by fans who would be drawn to do so because of their work (Richard Jacques until now, was one of the most beloved Sonic composers for his legacy in the Saturn era), it creates a space where it's safe to talk about it.  Obviously in a case where someone hasn't been publicly awful like Jacques was, enough people being brave enough to come forward first in spite of the risks can also create that safe space.

  9. Something that bugs me for some reason is Sonic's more realistic jump animation in some games. Like how Sonic's jumpball animation is only perfectly spherical when spin-dashing in SA2, and how they just got rid of it entirely starting with Heroes for a while. And while I'm at it, I don't like Sonic uncurling during a jump, something that also appeared in the 2D games starting with Advance 2. It's just really weird-looking

    1. Celestia

      Celestia

I appreciate the modern games avoiding most of this (he does uncurl in the boost trilogy but look...pobody's nerfect). I don't like the aura thing that SA2 started and has continued to this very day outside of LW though. I actually like how he looks like a buzz saw in Forces but I wish they had just added like...normal spikes to his LW jumpball.

    2. Sean

      Sean

Yeah the SLW jumpball is weird to me because it's basically that one single frame in the Genesis games that's a solid blue with no spike texture. Feels like it needed more animation to it

The aura thing reminds me of Sonic's spinning animation in Sonic X which was early 2000s CG and always looked out of place to me lol. I saw someone on Twitter mention that the only time he does a "normal" spin attack is in episode 5 in the fight with Knuckles, and I'm never gonna get over that fact

    3. Celestia

      Celestia

I'm surprised LW didn't incorporate the flickering between states like that since he even has a normal spinning animation (for the weird somersault move, but also when hitting the huge planetoid springs among other instances I think).

  10. The Vertebreaker situation really sucks, hope Stealth can turn things around and salvage the campaign eventually.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

  12. Richard Jacques' response to the remix on Twitter is fucking disgraceful. All my respect for him and his work has crashed through the floor.

    1. TCB

      TCB

At the very least if you didn't like it and in his profession must give constructive criticism fine, but he didn't even do that. Just completely flung Lee's name in the mud. From what I saw, Lee didn't directly credit him or TJ at first, but even she endorsed it. And that wasn't even posted on his own Twitter to begin with.

If the real problem is between him and SEGA and his words paraphrasing that "this wasn't the first time" about not getting proper credit why unceremoniously bring Lee and his sister down like that?

    2. Sean

      Sean

Multiple people have tried correcting him saying it's Sega he should be blaming and not drag Tee's name like this, and he's just telling them they're wrong without backing his shit up. I’m less concerned about the speed of the special stages and more concerned about that audio quality. That is atrocious.

Was Gems Collection emulation this bad or did the guy who recorded this had really bad recording software?

    4. Sean

      Sean

@Menace2Society It's not an emulation, it's a port of the 1996 PC version which had lower quality sound effects than the Sega CD version. So the quality you hear here is what it actually is.

    5. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

That's the game audio. The music might have been CD quality (no idea if Gems compressed it to fit, but it wouldn't surprise me) but even back in the day it always sounded like it was runing through a broken speaker.

    3. Sean

      Sean

Just spitballing ideas but some visionary who learns about cross-dimensional travel decides to go against the idea of hell being an inhospitable plane of suffering and sets up shop, promising an escape from divine judgment and mortality. Residents of the hell city travel there thinking they can escape their sins and beat death to the punch, like maybe they invent some technology where you literally can't die if you're in hell (since where would you even go). This goes about as well as anyone with any sense can predict and the city is just one big ironic hell for everyone there and the player is trying to escape or something.

Also the imagery of hell doesn't have to be the usual fire and brimstone kind with murderous demons. I was thinking something dreary, soul-crushing and suffocating to contrast the comforting design of the city itself. It should be something incredibly otherworldly, and can't possibly exist on any planet. Something that gets people's sins into a feedback loop and they can't escape from. Bourgeois citizens living in that city initially might get a kick out of conquering such a place, thinking they don't have shit to worry about after their time on the mortal spectrum is up.

I was half-joking when I made this status but I think this could be a way more interesting idea than suggestions I've seen of people wanting the next BioShock to be set in space (space is a really boring idea for this series considering how much it's been done in science fiction as a whole) or in Rapture again. I'm also not craving another BioShock game, I honestly have no informed clue on where the series can go after the last three games. If there had to be another game, then the only setting I can imagine that could top the last two would be something in another dimension, an entirely different plane of existence.

    4. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

Man what happened to bioshock infinite that everybody went from loving it when it first came out to being disappointed

    5. Wraith

      Wraith

I expect the third game to jist be set in rapture again. I like what Infinite tried to do with the IP but it just wasn't very good and I think it may have killed the series's drive for risktaking.

  20. I hate to admit it but P-06 is the first time I've ever felt excited for anything Sonic 2006-related lol, it's a really neat-o conversion and the more I learn about its differences from the base game the more impressed I am by it. The previous PC port was an impressive effort but didn't do much to sway me, and I still wasn't sure of what to make of P-06's first demo back in April. Demo 2 has really made me come around to it though (even if the game itself is still pretty garbo), like it actually feels like a playable product now

i never played 06 before P-06. It was a dope way for me to experience it for the first time lol

    2. JezMM

      JezMM

Just tried Wave Ocean and Flame Core. I find Sonic a bit slippery - I fell off really simple places in Wave Ocean that I've NEVER fallen off in the original, and the opening pathway of Flame Core was even worse to get around than the original - in that I had to slow down after the automated section to get my bearings - here I had to come to a full stop and walk until the camera settled so I could see the way ahead.

Other than that though?  Fantastic stuff, it's a bizarre experience to control Knuckles in particular, who felt AWFUL to play as in the original.  His gliding doesn't suck, his climbing animation doesn't look ridiculous, he gets up onto ledges properly, all his punches and attacks connect... It's bizarre for this to look so near-identical to the original game and yet have him handle the way I expect him to in my mind's eye (within the constraints of 2006's jankiness) rather than just being awful in all manner of ways.  The characters having actual facial animation when talking during the character transitions was an unnecessary but surprisingly nice touch too.

Oh, the spin attack actually damaging enemies rather than HAVING to use homing attacks is also pretty cool.

    3. Sean

      Sean

I slipped off Flame Core's beginning a LOT. I later found out that if you turn around on the platform with the first enemy, you can just jump to that section and skip the entire automated sequence

I also can't figure out how to reliably jump off the swings in Wave Ocean, I managed to do it... maybe three times? Every other time I try to jump from it Sonic just flops off lazily, I never had any problem with timing in SA2 or Generations.

@Mythical Panda I dunno if I would go that far, but yeah, the Schulz family is on record for saying that they felt Steve Martino did a good job with Horton in terms of being faithful to the book, that they picked him to direct the movie from their script.

(Of course, it also goes without saying that Blue Sky was apparently the only studio willing to give the Schulz family creative control over their movie as it is...)

    8. Milo

      Milo

@Mythical Panda Sean's referring to the (original) Birth of a Nation from 1915. The film is historically important for not only being one of the first feature films of the medium; it's also credited for near-singlehandedly inventing and/or pioneering a lot of techniques, tools, and tropes fundamental to making films, even today (just to name a few--camera close-ups, fade outs, using an musical score for an orchestra, and staged battle sequences).

BUT that historical significance is marred by its subject matter (adapted from a book titled The Clansmen). It's a story about two families and their struggle in the American Civil War that paints the KKK as heroes (it's actually credited to the group's resurgence in popularity in that decade) and champions white supremacy; while also vilifying African-Americans as the (now all-too-familiar) racist caricatures of them being unintelligent and predatory towards white women. Dissonance in values doesn't even hit the tip of the iceberg in regards to this movie.

    9. Nix

      Nix

      @Mythical Panda

The Birth of a Nation, probably.  Tons of groundbreaking film making techniques came from that movie (or were at least popularized by it).

But it's an incredibly racist movie that portrays the KKK as America's saviors.

    10. Sean

      Sean

I'm mostly being facetious. My standards of what a good animated film adaptation can be changed drastically after I saw the Peanuts film and realized that it wasn't going to be setting any trends. And Horton's really only good compared to other Dr. Seuss movies which isn't a high bar to surpass.

A better example for me to use would have been Sonic 2006 vs Sonic Unleashed; the former's badness was what made Sega try to turn the franchise around and produce one of my favorite games in the series but it doesn't raise my opinion of 2006 in the least.

  23. There's a higher chance of the next 3D Sonic game being good than there is of a good Dr. Seuss movie coming out in my lifetime so don't give up hope

at least we've gotten some cool stuff on the small screen for it like chuck jones' grinch, i suppose. the green eggs and ham show coming to netflix visually looks pretty neat, so i'm pretty curious to see how that plays out.

grinch 2000 has a delightfully hammy jim carrey performance and impressive makeup but i'm not going to bat for it beyond that. maybe if it didn't have that weird adult/grossout humor it would had held up as a movie more.

the tone of the grinch 2000 movie also comes off as bad in retrospect because you can see how hard the following cat in the hat movie with mike myers was trying to recapture its success by going overboard with that type of comedy and how it backfired to the point that we can't get anymore live-action seuss films.

Now, now. We as the Sonic Fanbase have learned that Jim Carrey alone won't save a bad movie.

      @Milo

That was the CITH film's first mistake: trying to copy Jim Carrey's Grinch. The Cat in the Hat is literally the polar opposite of the Grinch. Dr Seuss made that crossover with those two just to show how day and night they are.

thankfully illumination doesn't have the rights to seuss films anymore, so we don't have to expect another lorax or grinch 2018 in the coming years.

that said, warner bros. animation has the rights now and they're taking another stab at a cat in the hat movie. i think in a worst-case scenario it should at least be alright.
