  4. lol I bought another copy of AC:NL because I didn't want to continue my old town but was far too nostalgic over it to delete it. I don't have a Switch so I can't play NH anytime soon

      I would have done the same a few years ago so that my sister and I could have separate towns. But I got insanely lucky and found an AC:NL card down the back of the sofa at the care home I was working in at the time. It was a dementia ward. Didn't belong to any of the staff, and obviously wasn't one of the residents either. It had a name written on the back, so we asked all visitors over the next month if they knew anything about it. Nobody did so... I got a new copy of the game.

    Speaking of Mega Man X, the Capsule Remix hack is great and has replaced the original version for me. Among other things, it gives X the dash from the get-go (the capsule gives him the air dash, and it's possible to skip it and the buster upgrade so you can do a vanilla X-only run if you want), makes the hadouken not take 50 million years to obtain, and nerfs Wolf Sigma so you can damage him with something other than rolling shield or lv. 3 buster shot.

  6. Something that really holds the DS Kirby games back for me (Super Star Ultra and Squeak Squad) is the god awful control scheme. A for jump and B for attack on a Nintendo controller layout is horrible no matter what game it is

    Also KSSU's cutscenes are fuglier than I remembered 😧

  10. I know it probably won't happen since we got Mega Man 11, but if an X9 comes out with SNES graphics and music Imma be seriously disappointed. The SNES games may have been some of the best X games but I'll take the PS1 era graphics and soundfonts over those.

      I don't think anyone is rushing to defend X2 or X3 usually all the love goes to X1 and 4 so I don't think you have to worry about it to much

      @Polkadi~☆ I've been focusing on collecting them all but not using them. I'm not expecting to beat the game without any cyber elves since Copy X is a cheap fight, but it'd be nice to have a save file with all of them collected.

  12. Don't think I ever quite realized how massive of a step-down Zero 4's mechanics are from 3's until now. The rod weapon is gone and replaced with the Z Knuckle which isn't that great, and hunting for parts for recipes is tedious as hell. It was fine when Zero 3 just gave you chips for defeating bosses and finding them in levels, so why is there this monotonous drop-grinding system in place for the exact same stuff?

    Oh and the EX Skills are bad in this game. The gemini laser was so much better than that stupid time-stop buster shot, and the electric dash saber jab is useless at killing enemies compared to the default one. What doesn't help is that you have to use that horrible weather system to get them rather than simply playing the game well.

    Everything else about the game is fine, it's just that the stuff they outright replaced from Zero 3 is really bad in 4.

  18. Mega Man stories usually aren't anything to write home about, but Zero 2 to 4 have some of my favorite stories and characters in all of vidya. Makes me wish that Mega Man X was handled nearly this well, but it's impossible for me to take any of those games seriously no matter how much the writers sometimes wanted the player to.

      Everything about Maverick Hunter X story- and writing-wise is very good. There's not much to the SNES version of X1 though, which is fine for that game but the story's not as memorable there.

  19. Mega Man Zero is the closest the series has ever come to doing the character action genre and I want more of this kinda shit

      Have you played any of the Azure Striker Gunvolt games? I hear that they're pretty much a spiritual successor to that series since it's the same devs and all.

      Yeah. I played the first Gunvolt game and strongly disliked it at the time. Even compared to MMZ 2-4, it felt bullshit hard with unforgiving boss design and an incredibly unorthodox way of accessing the good ending, which I never went for because I hated the normal final boss so much that I figured I wouldn't stand a chance against the true boss. It didn't help that I played it on the OG 3DS which is the worst designed handheld known to man.

      However since it's been so long, my opinion on Gunvolt has mellowed out since (you can probably find my old posts in the SSMB topic where I most likely ripped it to shreds and called it a bad game) and I'm a little more mixed on it these days. I've seen gameplay footage from people much better at video games than I am and it certainly looks like great fun if you can wrap your mind around its mechanics. I just think the gameplay loop of tagging enemies with your gun and pressing another button to destroy them is a little too convoluted for a frantic game such as this compared to MMZ's simple yet effective risk-vs-reward weapons system.

    I've been working on getting EX skills and forms in Mega Man Zero 2 again. Probably gonna have to do NG+ for the rest; in the DS collection I went for all skills in all games but didn't bother with most of the forms since they're mainly a grind.

    This Mega Man X1 hack is great. Among other things, it borrows from another hack that gives you the dash from the get-go (the upgrade gives you the air dash, which is SUPER fun to use in X1), makes the hadouken not stupid obscure and annoying to obtain, and allows for a complete no-upgrade, buster-only run since it no longer forces the buster part on you and makes it so that Wolf Sigma can be damaged by a level 2 charged shot. Oh and you can kill Wolf Sigma with the hadouken much like in the PSP version.

    My only complaint is that it makes the buster part too easy to obtain now. I like that it's not stupid hard to access it anymore, but it also removes the blocks and thus the head part requirement which helped obscure its location by blending in with the rest of the level graphics.

    Everything else about the hack is good shit and it's my default way to play X1 now.

  25. I have no idea how people can like Mega Man 2 when everything about it feels like a textbook study of how not to design a good Mega Man game.

      I wouldn't be able to tell you what's special about it but there must be some secret to it because even though I never played the Mega Man games as a kid, I got MM2 on Wii VC and enjoyed it enough to play through several times. After enjoying it so much, I picked up MM3 when that came out and yet somehow lost interest in that one and never finished it.

      Granted, this was so long ago, maybe a new more exciting game distracted me away from 3, not anything inherently wrong with the game itself.

      Many things about the game are great. Many things about the game are also BULLSHIT.

      Why does Metal Blade severely outclass every other weapon?! Why are so many stages stupidly hard, like Quick Man's?! Why is it possible to get stuck in Wily's Castle if you don't have enough Crash Bombers?!

      Despite that, it's still a shining example of it's time, and great fun to play today.

      By far my biggest problem with it is how certain bosses in the Wily stages cannot be defeated without the right weapons. If you ran out of crash bombs to defeat that stupid orb boss then you might as well get yourself a game over because dying doesn't reset weapon energy. If you don't have bubble lead for the alien fight then you can't beat it. And getting a game over means you lose all of your E-tanks so this is the last thing you want if you already struggle a lot with it.

      I hate dealing with enemies and bosses in this game, their patterns are too erratic for me to react to even when I know they're coming. It's impossible for me to dodge the aforementioned orb's projectiles without using the pause trick. That's not to say I don't struggle at other Mega Man games, I absolutely do, but X1-4 and Zero 2-4 are easier for me to wrap my head around and adapt to than Mega Man 2's difficulty.

      Mega Man 3-6 have their moments but I find them fine to play for the most part, especially 4 and 5. 1 and 2 are the ones I have a hard time going back to and I can only really appreciate their historical relevance over their quality or fun factor. The way I play games, let alone other Mega Man games, just isn't compatible with what MM2 demands of me.

      I can agree that the forced weapon usage in the wily stage bosses particularly for boobeam trap and the alien aren't exactly what I call good design by any margin.

      When I look back at MM2 i see it as a case of early installment weirdness only with less of the jank than the first one. The foundation is built upon but it needed some ironing in a few places.

      Not a favorite of mine in the classic series by any stretch but I still had my fun with it.

      ^ That's more or less how I feel. MM2 was a massive step-up from 1 and really helped make a name for the series, and yeah I totally get how people can say it's their favorite, flaws and all. But with six of these damn games on the NES I really cannot agree at all with the fans who say it's the objective peak of the series, or how it went downhill after 2 (or 3 depending on who you ask).

      A lot of my annoyance toward the pedestal upon which 2 is placed also has to do with Capcom officially acknowledging it by designing MM9 as a successor to 2, and I'm not talking about just the removal of the slide or charge shot but also the ridiculous trial and error difficulty and reuse of music. And I actually like 9 more than 2. But wow are a lot of parts of that game not fun at all and feel like a deliberate regression from 3 and 4's tight and (mostly) fair difficulty.
