      WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN!?

      - The story and translation are terrible. Everyone knows this already. Moving on.

      - BN4 is extremely stingy with giving the player good payouts throughout the story. You're underpowered at all times in the face of this game's sadistic viruses(es) compared to past titles, and there are way too many mandatory story moments where you're forced to give up your zenny, so it's impossible to save up for actual important stuff to buy like chips and powerups. I had to cheat my way through the game just to level the playing field, and this was only the initial playthrough before everything gets ridiculously stronger on subsequent NG+.

      - Every single scenario is fucking horrible. I can't stress enough that there isn't a single fun scenario to be had here. Everything forces you to run around the internet doing time-wasting tasks that range from tedious fetch quests to soul-sucking minigames that are harder than they have any right to be for a children's RPG game. Most if not all of them require precise timing and having to start over if you screw up even a couple times. And when it's not Mario Party AI-run minigames, it's obnoxious crap like having to locate the correct chips for ColdMan's scenario, and you're just shit the fuck outta luck if you don't have them at this part of the story. By the way, there's only three actual dungeons in the entire game - most of everything takes place on the main internet with some obnoxious gimmick attacked to it. Ugh.

      - For every improvement or new feature added to the battle system, you have one or two things taken away from you for no apparent reason. The add chip system is gone and you can only have a maximum of eight chips with custom program parts, unless you use Number Soul in one of the versions. Style change is replaced with soul unison, and considering the random order you get them, go fuck yourself if you get stuck with a soul you don't care about. Full synchro replaces bugfrag counter drops from 3, which makes it harder than ever before to collect bugfrags. ModTools and compression codes are completely gone for the NaviCust. The end result is a messy hodgepodge which can't figure out whether it wants to improve or replace BN3's battle system outright.

      - You can't run away from random encounter bosses. You can in past games. I don't think I need to explain what's wrong with this picture. And the omega variants are extremely brutal. AquaMan alone had 1800 HP. Jesus christ!! WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA!?

      - lol having to play the entire game three fucking times

Well, if the probabilities are on your side it could be just common cold, and as long as you're not an elder person or have some health problems that'd make you more vulnerable to the corona virus you're prolly safe from the worst harm anyway.

I suppose resting (and trying to boost your health/immunity, I have heard lemon, ginger, honey and some type of zinc are good for that) would be handy in all cases if it's possible for you to take a break but hopefully it's not corona at least.

Just take care, I hope it's nothing serious.

    3. Sean

      Sean

Thanks. I think the likelihood that I got the virus is pretty damn low but I can't help but be paranoid since I'm very germophobic. I'm also very worried about passing it to my family assuming I do have it.

Well, I feel you, flus are something I hate myself, mostly because they're always hitting in the worst of times when it comes to the schedules, making doing anything three times as hard as usual and all. Probably the only reason I know any of those helps for flu at all... I cannot use the public transportation without gloves anymore, I have seen people first coughing on their hands and then touching and basically wiping their paws each and every bench-holding pillar on the way to the bus door... There was a person practically coughing straight into my hand in a train and after that I decided I'm not showing my ticket card to the reader anymore in there since it isn't obligatory when the ticket is for a certain time period anyway.

Hope it gets better and isn't corona in your case.

Dr. Cossack being the one who created Bass is a really cool twist.

  7. Finished OSS, that's the first Battle Network game I ever finished 100% with all chips and Bass defeated. And it's gonna be the last because boss hunting is the fucking worst.

  8. Fuck off Capcom for making two event-only chips in OSS that can't be traded between games. It'd be like distributing an event Pokemon that you can't transfer between two games of the same generational pair.

  9. PSA everyone, don't talk about piracy on these forums. I've been seeing a lot of comments and posts lately mentioning this stuff so I want to remind you all that we forbid discussion of these matters here, and we're not going to assist anyone having trouble regarding games downloaded from the net. That is all.

  10. Something that's cute about OSS is that when playing as Geo, the normal virus theme is replaced with the one from Star Force 1, and the SF1 boss music plays when you're fighting ClockMan.EXE. Though I wish they used the victory music too while they were at it.

    4. Sean

      Sean

@Pelvic WOO! engine There's a translation patch for the DS version. I'm not using it since I'm playing my imported copy on my 3DS though. I just follow an LP.

  11. So I played Battle Network 1, 2, 5 on the DS, and now I'm back to 1 on the DS with an untranslated cartridge, which makes NumberMan's random password doors a lot more annoying when I don't understand the hints lol

What an ominous and badass sounding name.

  15. Battle Network 5DS has so many great battle mechanics in it that it can get pretty overwhelming going straight to this from an earlier game. NaviCust, Double Soul, and the DS version's Navi party system that lets you play as other Navis can all help you feel like you're really overpowered even early in the story. The main downside to 5 is that I'm not into the liberation missions, but normal battles and bosses are some of the most fun in the entire series.

I remember playing the GBA version years ago (back when I was either in high school or early college, I forget) and wasn't a fan of it at all. I couldn't look past how annoying the liberations are I guess, and I was suffering from burnout from previous entries. But playing it on the DS has given me a greater appreciation for it and it's an incredibly polished entry.

  18. The Zero/ZX Legacy Collection is really good and it's absolutely the version of these games that newcomers should pick up, but there's a handful of minor flaws that really bug the hell out of me and hold this back as being the definitive collection: shitty cutscene artwork filtering (even with filters disabled), horrible title screen typefont, and a complete lack of perfect pixel mode for the ZX games. I actually like the Zero DS collection over this. This is a purely subjective preference and I wouldn't recommend anyone hunt down the DS version (not helped by how expensive it is these days), but if I had to pick one copy to keep and go back to over and over, it'd be the old one.

  19. The Zero collection is pretty great so far, with one caveat: There is a filter for cutscene artwork in the Zero games even when filtering for the game is disabled and it's fucking horrible. Patch this shit, Capcom.

Also as a sidenote, the generic text font for title screens is fugly.

    1. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

      >filtered cutscene art

either just stick the original art in there or don't touch it

    2. Sean

      Sean

Yeah I really don't know what they were thinking here. I loathe playing 2D retro games with any filters whatsoever, so way to force this shit on me even when I disable it Capcom. I don't care about the title screen text since it doesn't affect anything but the cutscenes look objectively worse now.

Can't detect any input lag though so the collection is great where it counts. Playing on PS4

    3. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Honestly, if ZX and ZXA can get unfiltered anime cutscenes, there's no reason we can't get the original artwork for the cutscenes into the Zero games, and get to see them in full HD for the first time.

We're not playing to the limits of the original devices anymore, so it could be done...

  20. I'm importing EXE1 Operate Shooting Star on the DS from Japan. Lazy port or not, I just want more Battle Network on my 3/DS.

  21. Not being able to see V2 Navis on the field (and the fact that they become random battles after you defeat them) is the worst thing about BN

@TCB If you like Mega Man X you'd most likely enjoy MMZ. The stories are far beyond the quality you would expect from a Mega Man game, with great twists and emotional nuance, and very subtle character development for Zero that extends across all four games. Zero's playstyle combines both X and his MMX self, and you are encouraged to play levels well and quickly with no time-wasting gimmicks that the later MMX games suffer from. Zero 2 and 3 are some of the best Mega Man games ever made with top-notch level design, music, and side mechanics which help level the playing field such as the cyber elf system (which is improved upon even further in 3 via satellite elves, which are equippable and don't affect your ranking) and unlockable EX skills from bosses similar to Zero's obtained moves in X4 that make the game that much more fun.

    6. Sean

      Sean

@TCB Have you played any Mega Man game before? The X and Zero games are much faster-paced than the classic series with dashing and wall-climbing thrown into the mix. I think the MMX series, particularly the earlier games, would be a better start than MMZ since the latter can get much more difficult.

    7. TCB

      TCB

Cant really say that I have. The only MM experience I ever really had was early on in the Battle Network series.

I take these games are out of the question on jumping into then

    8. Sean

      Sean

I recommend checking out X1-5 first so you get an idea of who Zero is, and the MMZ series references MMX's storyline and events fairly often. Classic MM isn't necessary.

  23. Been doing a gearless/no-upgrade run of MM11, just have Blast Man and the castle stages left.

  24. It's weird that Capcom didn't do any DLC for MM11, when 9 and 10 had tons of it. I mean I can appreciate when a game is released as-is and the company decides that it's done with it. But playable Roll/Blues/Bass would have been really fun and helped with replayability I think. Kind of a shame

    1. Sean

      Sean

They also should have just kept the Omega-Xis buster because that shit's cool as fuck :/ I remember when we saw that and people got excited about other Mega Man series getting similar cameos in MM11, what a disappointment.

    5. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

Wow. Sucks that they took it out. Oy vey. Two steps forward. One step back.

  25. I've been replaying MM11 and it's still pretty fun. My major complaint is that levels go on for too long, I wish it had the checkpoint system of MM8/X4 where getting a game over didn't send you back all the way to the beginning. I also hate this game's fetish for placing insta-death hazards near the end of the level (so dying sends you back like 10 screens away)

Also, having items not respawn in levels is bullshit. You can't grind for lives and E-tanks in levels, so anyone wanting to play the game like a classic MM title by ignoring the shop is screwed over.

    1. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

You can do it, but it's a major pain. You have to be really good at the game to not use the shop.

    2. Sean

      Sean

I really like the double gear system; I use it a lot. But I can't imagine how some of this game can be completed without it. I'm sure it's possible but it seems like it'd make it harder than any of the NES Mega Man games after 2 if you tried to. Stuff like Torch Man's firewalls need to fuck off into the ether, and I'm not a fan of the bosses having pinch phases that are extremely hard to react to during your first encounter with them.

    3. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

It's definitely doable. I'm surprised so many people have had issues with Torch Man's stage, as I found it easy to skip past without the Speed Gear. And many of the bosses can be defeated without the gears, you just need to get your timing down (which is actually quite lenient, you just need to not buckle under the stress).

For first encounters, though? I definitely agree that those sections can be a pain in the ass. And I guess that's what the Speed Gear is for.

    4. Sean

      Sean

I'm strongly considering doing a gearless (and maybe upgrade-less) run after this, but I suck at classic, and the marathon-length level design is so daunting at times even when buying all the upgrades I can and using gears.

    5. Gentle Criminal

      Gentle Criminal

Completely off topic, but speaking of bad marathon design - Dr. Light's challenge from MM11 can fuck right off as well.

    6. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Oh fuck that challenge. It's a new level of horseshit there.
