  1. When you bitch about Tumblr then you're targeting very specific areas of the site that are in no way representative of it considering there IS no representative demographic of tumblr. It's full of just as many good things as bad ones. Also knock it off with the shitting on SJWs; there are a lot of people who do make extravagant and ridiculous arguments on that site (and elsewhere on the internet, let's not forget), but the term SJW has come to apply to anything that even so much a...

It only became serious when people started using it alongside not just disrespect but slurs and threats, the ones who made it serious are the ones who began using it as an insult in the first place, you only have yourselves to blame if you've done it.

    3. The KKM

      The KKM

I'm not defending those who insult earnest activists, or whatever you'd want to call them in a quicker fashion. I'm saying that actively trying to remove the usage of the term at all also covers the cases where people are using the insult on people who AREN'T trying to do a positive difference, etc. Like, say...

    4. The KKM

      The KKM

Sami used the term "overzealous social justice fanatics". That's also a good one, doesn't flow as well but whatever- It's an accurate term that accuses a specific group of people. Over time, this term becomes popular, and people start both trying to shut it down and use it everywhere. So sites start to ban the usage of the term. But remember how at the start it was an accurate description?

    5. The KKM

      The KKM

You now need a new term to replace the accurate description it was doing. So you come up with, I don't know, social justice clerics. The term catches on, more people start using it, more people start getting angry and trying to clamp it down, which leads to more people using it in wrong contexts, etc etc. See the cycle occurring? Or we can instead just let it become part of the parlance, where it'll be diluted so much it'll stop mattering, except in the cases where the hat fits, p...

    6. The KKM

      The KKM

...per se. Think of other insults like idiot, and if you literally had sites going "oh we're adult level discussion here, but say idiot and your post is banned". You say "sure, but idiot's comparatively harmless", but there was a time where it wasn't.

    7. SuperLink

      SuperLink

Social Justice Warrior isn't an insult used just for idiots or trolls though.

The term is usually used specifically by those who do not want to try and understand subjects and topics of equality that are new or alien to them. "Not enough female protagonists"? SJW. "Not enough trans representation"? SJW. "Criticising the negative way a minority is represented or insulted"? SJW.

    8. The KKM

      The KKM

As always I started rambling midway so I'm not sure if my point, if any point at all, made it through, but tl;dr- don't clamp down on the usage of the term SJW, especially since sometimes it's rightly used, and let it become diluted as an insult as it happens with any insult that isn't taboo

    9. SuperLink

      SuperLink

I'm not talking about extremes like banning or censoring the word lmao, I just want to urge people to stop using the term ignorantly and think about what it is they actually hate and why they hate it.

Do they hate people being genuinely horrible to them about issues of equality or do they just hate having to reconsider themselves how certain social issues are and would rather ignore them and think the old way wasn't harming them so it's fine?

    10. The KKM

      The KKM

It's also still used in contexts where it does apply, though. Off the top of my head, actual tumblr cases- say all males should die but complain of any generalization to own gender, SJW. Complain that yuri is fetishizing and proof of mysoginy while making Naruto gore yaoi porn, SJW. Etc. Cases where the fight for equality is clearly being used only as a cover for personal gain, whether intentionally or not.

    11. SuperLink

      SuperLink

I don't think it's /ever/ been rightly used. It's always been an insult used by people who don't want to rethink social issues.

    12. SuperLink

      SuperLink

But look, listen to the actual words, "Social justice warrior". If you heard this decades ago, it'd sound positive, right? It'd sound like a compliment.

The thing is, it's entirely and inherently meant to be ironic. Like keyblade warrior, white knighter, it's taking a positive sounding cause and making it sound bad. Using it for people who are genuinely wrong still shows ill intent towards people who actually want social justice.

    13. The KKM

      The KKM

I'll honestly have to semi-disagree here. I agree people who don't want to have to rethink society use it as an insult, that much is obvious. But it still has "correct" applications. There ARE people who fit the description. Much the same way as there are people who've only used the term in those situations where it makes sense. Where it means "says they're fighting for equality by calling others' mistakes while shitting on people who call their own", not...

    14. The KKM

      The KKM

... "is forcing me to rethink the world".

    15. The KKM

      The KKM

It IS ironic, but not in the sense you think it is, I think. They're "warriors" fighting hard for "social justice" as seen by them. The deprecation isn't in the idea of social justice as equality, but of social justice as described by these kinds of people. Which yes, is easy to misinterpret and thus lead to the kind of overgeneralized usage we've agreed happens.

    16. The KKM

      The KKM

Think of it as having quotation marks around the SJ.

    17. SuperLink

      SuperLink

How can it have "correct" applications when the word was not originally used for that purpose? The word was originally used as a way of being actively ignorant to social issues while making activists look "crazy" or "obsessed". Its whole origin of intent is to put down activists and paint them negatively.

    18. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

The extent to which a generalization applies to a group depends on its statements and actions within ratio of one another. If 90% of people in a group are for something, it's fair to apply the label as a metonymy. Not every generalization is equally invalid.

    19. The KKM

      The KKM

And how do you determine the percentages, then?

@SuperLink- We're disagreeing on what the original usage was, in that case :P

    20. SuperLink

      SuperLink

if the term really was originally used for people who do social issues all wrong then people wouldn't hate the term as much as they do.

The reason it's become such a negative term to activists is because it has /always/ been used to put activists down and make them look crazy, almost /specifically/ for that purpose.

    21. The KKM

      The KKM

I'd argue the reason it became negative to activists would be simply due to how quickly it spread due to how vague the term "social justice" can be in the context, no? Regardless, I'm not arguing that this spread of the "wrong" usage wasn't as fast as to be nearly instantaneous. But for what it's worth, I don't think it's still not the original "target". When it started appearing you could quickly tell it was going to get diluted as fuck, but it...

    22. The KKM

      The KKM

... was still being used to refer to, quoting you, "people who do social issues all wrong"

    23. SuperLink

      SuperLink

The first times I ever heard the term around 2012 (as someone who had many Tumblr friends who dabbled in social issues around the time they started to become bigger there), it was being used facetiously for people like my friends, so :/

    25. The KKM

      The KKM

at this point I pretty much agree with you, I think, other than the question of the root of the term :V

I think much more highly of the returning stages in Mania than most, but seeing more in Mania 2 would be immensely disappointing. I agree with you about not really caring to see more S1 levels. Everything in that game has been better realised by future levels. I wouldn't object to Marble getting a makeover though.

    5. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

      For a theoretical Mania 2:

      Sonic 1: Star Light.

Sonic CD: Quartz Quadrant & Wacky Workbench.

Sonic 2: Mystic Cave & Wood zone

Sonic 3&K: Ice Cap & Carnival Night

Knuckles Chaotix: Marina Madness & Botantic Base

    6. Sean

      Sean

It's not that I would prefer Mania 2 have more returning levels (my reasons being mostly that most of the best ones have already been chosen and trying to pick more would edge closer to scraping for B-rate choices), it's just that I'd be more okay with it than most people.

    7. Milo

      Milo

I don't think I'm really bothered with what Genesis-era level the developers pick; I just hope that if they return, they go the Mania Act 2 route for the entire zone. Completely remix / overhaul them for both acts.

    8. Celestia

      Celestia

I'd honestly love to see what they'd do with any of Sonic 1's other Zones (except SBZ since Metallic Madness is literally Scrap Brain 2, but I digress). Marble in particular doesn't get enough love imo.

I really like the hybrid zone idea tho', that'd be a cool twist.

    9. Shiguy

    10. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

How about no returning levels from the Genesis games c:

I would pick Sunset Park, Sky High and Marina Madness.

    11. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

I don't mind more returning zones, but a full complete story/transitions linking the zones together is a must. Some of the zones later on in Mania feel out-of-place due to the lack of transitions.

    12. Teoskaven

      Teoskaven

With my little experience of the franchise, the zone i would be interested to see are Marble Zone, Star Light Zone, either Casino Night Zone or Carnival Night Zone, Mystic Cave Zone, Mushroom Hill Zone, IceCap Zone, Collision Chaos and Quartz Quadrant.

    13. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

If you wanna talk hybrid levels, then things have to get extreme. Scrap Marble, Oil Mushroom, Sandopolegg, Labyrinth Night...

    14. TheOcelot
    15. Sean

      Sean

I actually really liked what Sylvania Castle Zone had going for it and certainly wouldn't object to a Genesis-ified rendition of it.

    16. Penny

      Penny

Casino Labyrinth, Aquatic Metropolis, Mushroom Marble, Mystic (Launch) Base, Chemical (Ice) Cap

dammit now i want this to be a thing

    17. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Proposing a Green Hill and Splash Hill merger too.

    18. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

      Hybrids:

      Quartz Quadrant/Endless Mine

      Labyrinth/Tidal Tempest

      Casino Night/Carnival Night

      Marble zone/Marble Garden/R2 (Sonic CD)

      Star Light/Stardust Speedway

      Sandopolis/Desert Palace (Sonic 3 2player)

    19. Adamabba

      Adamabba

I want Quartz Quadrant to return just so they can make it a longer level thatll let me hear that sweet music playing for longer than 30 seconds

    20. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Eh, if it ain't Carnival Night (for the remix alone), Ice Cap, or Angel Island then I honestly don't want to see any more returning stages from the Classics. Between Generations and Mania, my main points of interested have already been covered (some more than they ever should've).

    21. Pelvic WOO! engine

      Pelvic WOO! engine

      Springyard ocean zone

      Quartz battery zone

      Studio monarch zone

      Mushroom cap zone

      Carnival ruin zone

      Wacky night zone

....yeah, none of these make sense.

    22. Celestia

      Celestia

Someone should edit The Hangover's poster so it says Wacky Night Zone instead

    23. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Real talk: I'd much rather see merged level theme than out and out zone merges (like Casino Forest in Forces except not shit). I'd absolutely love to see a city level combined with a water level. "Hydropolis Zone".

  7. So is anyone else super disappointed that The Great Gatsby is going to be featuring very little music that evokes the era of 1920s? I just skimmed the soundtrack and god it's a pop fest all the way through, with one exception.

    1. Linkabel

      Linkabel

I am, also very disappointed in some of the cast as well.

    2. Sean

      Sean

Just god, what were they thinking with the soundtrack? I really would have been more excited for this film had the musical direction been completely different. Instead, we have... Jay-Z. Alright. Totally makes me think of the 20s.

They should have just gotten Caravan Palace or Parov Stelar to do the music.

    3. Alexander

      Alexander

Oh, absolutely. It's just out of place and really doesn't work. I was stoked when the movie was first announced, but the more I see, the less I look forward to it. It honestly doesn't look too good.

    4. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

Are you serious? No 20s era jazz or those crooners?

    5. Sean

      Sean

      Very little of it.

Here's a sampler for the soundtrack.

    6. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

Well, the first song sounds pretty fine-- WHAT THE FUCK WILL.I.AM. YOU'VE RUINED IT.

    7. Sean

      Sean

There is in fact a bit of it but it just feels completely dominated by the presence of pop music.

Lana Del Rey's good tho'. Even if she's anachronistic, she can stay.

    12. Soniman

      Soniman

      Man that sucks.

    13. Ferno

      Ferno

...alot of these songs have old-timey sounding themes so it's not as bad as I thought it'd be going in for a listen. Still understand the general frustration though.

    14. Sixth-Rate Soma

      Sixth-Rate Soma

Yeah, ironically she's probably the best on the album. That's... depressing.

    15. Sean

      Sean

Yeah some of the songs do have some elements, as well as a couple of songs that just straight up lifted from the era, but yeah the pop stuff is really too distracting for me. Not what I expected at all.

    16. The Kid

      The Kid

Sean, I hear ya, but I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I'm always eager to see new adaptations of my favorite books. Besides, we had a movie in 2000 that was more in period with Fitzgerald's novel.

    22. Badnik Zero

      Badnik Zero

Didn't he do this to his other movies?

  8. Writing off a movie just because the writing and characters are bad is an incredibly shallow mindset and it doesn't make for interesting critique or discussions. A lot of my favorite works have, at best, an okay story: Kaiba is one of my favorite anime and its story suffers severely in the second half. People need to think outside of the box when analyzing films.

    1. Yoko/葉子

      Yoko/葉子

I say that it depends on how the movie is handled.

    2. Sean

      Sean

I also think this can apply to games too in regards to gameplay. Solatorobo is a pretty amazing game but its gameplay is extremely weak. It's just that everything that surrounds it makes the whole experience worthwhile.

    3. Pelly <3's U

      Pelly <3's U

I mean with a medium like movies where there are multiple aspects to it, I think other facets can prop up a weak story. I mean I remember even though I thought the plot of Frozen was almost exceedingly bad, I thought the great staging, music, and animation (though the design was not to my taste) bumped it up to at least an average movie in my mind. However, I think a weak story is going to always be a rather large blemish on an otherwise great movie.

    4. Soniman

      Soniman

Are you saying writing off a movie because the characters AND writing is bad is a shallow mindset, or are you saying that writing of a movie because of those two things in seperate instances?

Because usually if BOTH the characters and writing suffer in a story then it's perfectly valid reasoning to call it bad or unenjoyable.

    5. Sean

      Sean

A weak story does have a lot of weight to it and that can't be denied yeah. That's why whenever I recommend Kaiba to someone, I always tell them that the story isn't great and what they should be paying attention to.

I just don't get it when people say "well these other things were great buuuut the writing was bad and so nothing else matters," and with that kind of attitude, discussion of movies is stunted.

    6. Solkia

      Solkia

why would I stick around for a movie if the 2 most important ingredients to a story suck

    7. Ferno

      Ferno

I'll admit that parts of BH6 were really weak in terms of story but the other aspects made up for that for me ppersonally.

    8. Pelly <3's U

      Pelly <3's U

^I felt the same way with Big Hero 6, not the best plot wise but innovative and spirited enough to be charming nonetheless

    9. Felix

      Felix

What Solkia said. And I never think that when the story/characters are dull, then everything else is void of any due. Don't put words in my mouth.

    11. Sean

      Sean

BH6's story was weaksauce and its ending was pretty disappointing, but I loved the movie as a whole all the same.

    12. Felix

      Felix

I pretty much felt the same way about BH6. It went downhill in its third act for me and the ending was underwhelming, but I still really like it.

    13. Sean

      Sean

Felix you were pretty quick to say that Book of Life was "just not good" so yes I think you're being surprisingly dismissive of it as someone who fancies himself to be a big movie buff

    14. Gregzilla

      Gregzilla

I can forgive a weak plot if the characters are interesting, but almost never the other way around.

But if the writing and characters are bad then, uh, isn't that just a bad movie? Writing is really important.

    15. Felix

      Felix

Well, I simply just didn't think it was very good movie. I acknowledge it does quite a lot right, but the story and characters /are/ integral to a movie, and that's where it faltered. Like Greg said, writing is important. It's also a matter of potential, if a film has all the ingredients to be great and the movie goes on without putting them to good use, then I walk away disappointed. It's a movie about life and death and they could've done so much more with the premise, b...

    16. Pelly <3's U

      Pelly <3's U

Honestly if plot and characters the only thing of importance to me I couldn't like almost any of the animated disney movies with their plots based on romantic period ideals (plot > characters) which leads to usually flat characters. It's only because they have a mysterious charm factor (plus music, animation, childhood appeal, etc) that I love them.

    17. Felix

      Felix

ut they just ended up playing it safe.

    18. Sean

      Sean

Yeah a lot of Disney movies don't have good writing or characters when you think about it. I think The Lion King is a badly written movie, but I can't deny how well-loved it is and how it does so many other things extremely well. Still not a favorite of mine but there you go

    19. Sean

      Sean

Also Aladdin is a really great movie but Aladdin and Jasmine aren't amazing characters in the least. Or even Jafar, who I think is shit-tier Disney villain

    20. Felix

      Felix

I actually agree with the Disney thing. Hell, I hate Pocahontas (and a bunch of other people do too, from what I can tell), but I can appreciate the things it does well, and the fact that the movie genuinely brings joy to people.

    21. Pelly <3's U

      Pelly <3's U

Haha speaking of Aladdin, when Jafar doesn't get a villian song but /fucking/ Ratcliffe does you know that's low tier shit right there

    22. Felix

      Felix

Ratcliffe's villain song was decent though

  9. -watches the Far from Home trailer-

    At least we have Spider-Verse

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I mean it looks good imo. Not Spider-Verse good and I'd venture to say not as good as Homecoming but I'm excited for it nonetheless. Tom's take on a younger yet somewhat experienced Spiderman is pretty good to me.

    2. KHCast

      KHCast

I mean it’s got Mysterio, so it automatically looks better than the original trilogy

    3. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Imo, I think it just says a lot about how fucking good the last two or so years have been for Spiderman for me to say that Far from Home only looks ok.

    4. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Not every Spider Man film has to be Spider-verse.

    5. Ferno

      Ferno

I'll admit that I loved the "big movie" orchestral remix of the classic theme used in the trailer and I hope its somewhere in the film.

I'll need to get used to vanilla spiderman again tho

    6. Failinhearts

      Failinhearts

      @Ferno

They did that with Homecoming, too.

    7. Ferno

      Ferno

I know but the new one sounded even more grand and punchy and I hope its used in an actual scene during the movie.

    8. Failinhearts

      Failinhearts

Fair enough, that trailer had a very traditional sounding one which is good in its own right.

While Homecoming had that flare that only comes from a Giacchino score.

    9. Wraith

      Wraith

It looks pretty uninspired. The best part of the last movie was Peter's new geek squad and I still like them here but that's about it. Shit deflated once Nick Fury popped up. Looked like more of the same lol

    10. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I think I'm just burnt out on Spider-Man atm. 2018 we had Venom, Spider-Man PS4 and Into the Spider-Verse. Not to mention he was in Infinity War as well so I think that they should of waited a year before this movie came out

    11. KHCast

      KHCast

Wonder if he has ptsd or something along those lines here from iw

    12. Celestia

      Celestia

I'm honestly just not a fan of MCU Peter. I'm all for alternate takes but all the optimism I had after his (admittedly few) scenes in CW was gone by Homecoming, and what we've seen of FFH has made me even more pessimistic.

Like I'm not asking him to not have flaws (hell, Peter Parker is hardly a nice softboy even as a teenager, which...is one of my problems with this incarnation actually?) but the whole "pfft Europe doesn't need Spider-Man #yolo" thing...mmmm. I know it obviously doesn't last but mmmmmmm.

I can't complain too much tho' because every other aspect of Spidey, even the comics of all things, has gotten back on track lately.

    13. Ferno

      Ferno

It never would've happened but I would've lost it if Tobey-Spidey made it into the MCU as a 20's/ early 30's Peter with his story retconned so that he was always part of the MCU but never discovered until the events of Civil War or whatever

    14. KHCast

      KHCast

I was never a huge Tobey fan, and actually preferred MCU Parker to him overall. Idk I guess I just found the latter one a bit more relatable and vibrant. Not to say he isn’t flawed and has his share of issues.(yeah he’s a bit too “pure” acting)

    15. Ferno

      Ferno

      Celestia

While I did like Tobey for the most part, I mostly prefer those movies because of the writing and direction more than anything. There's uh, also nostalgia admittedly, lol.

Meanwhile I like Holland a lot, I'm just not a huge fan of what they've given him to work with post-Civil War.

    17. KHCast

      KHCast

I definitely see where you’re coming from on why you feel the way you do, and certainly can agree they seem to be playing things a bit safe with MCU peters films and writing. I mean there’s so much they could do with him.

    18. Wraith

      Wraith

They fucked up by not introducing Miles in the first place and I been salty ever since

Not anymore though because the best Spider-Man movie ever is an adaptation of the boy

    19. KHCast

      KHCast

He’ll show up in a Easter egg I bet for this one, dudes gained hella popularity and Disney has to have noticed

    20. Kuzu

      Kuzu

While I get the criticisms, I do like how Holland's films capture the "fun" aspect of the character that I feel gets ignored a lot in favor of the tragic aspect.

I get tragedy defines Spidey a lot, but so does the fact he does genuinely love what he does in spite of it.

    21. KHCast

      KHCast

PS4 spidey gets that pretty well I feel

  10. Anybody have a favorite track or two from Tropical Freeze? I'm having a really hard time deciding, there's just too much good, memorable stuff. Grassland Groove, Harvest Hazards, Busted Bayou, the first part of Twilight Terror (Stickerbush), all of Irate Eight (Lockjaw)...

    1. Sean

      Sean

The underwater version of Harvest Hazards (which is even better than the normal one), Homecoming Hijinx, Punch Bowl (Juicy Jungle boss theme), Fruity Factory...

      I CAN'T DECIDE.

    4. Sean

Windmill Hills is eeeexcellent. It was also the level that made me start loving the game even more than DKCR.

I have a feeling that anything anyone will suggest in this status would be something I agree with in one way or another

    5. YoshiUnity

Oh yeah! Seashore War! That's an awesome song as well!

    12. Sean

      Sean

I was listening to the Sawmill Thrill theme just earlier. My absolute favorite part starts here:

and holy hell I forgot how insanely pretty Seashore War is. I almost wasn't paying attention due to how hectic that level can be.

Alpine Incline gives me some Stickerbush vibes without actually trying to be Stickerbush. You can totally tell that's Wise's style.

    13. Wraith

      Wraith

And whatever that song was that plays in the forest level of World 6

    16. Grim & Gritty CC14

      Grim & Gritty CC14

I really love Homecoming Hijinx. When I first heard it in the intro, it instantly brought me back to DKC2's fantastic "dramatic" and "epic" tracks. I never thought a DK game would have that kind of feel with its music ever again, but I was SOOOOO glad to be wrong.

    17. Sean

      Sean

Yeah Krook's March from DKC2 is one of my favorites from that game for giving me similar feelings of "holy shit things are really going down now" that Homecoming Hijinx does

    18. YoshiUnity

      YoshiUnity

Out of all of them though. Aqueduct Assault is my absolute Favorite. It's just an absolutely amazing song that gets you pumped up for the fight.

    19. Sean

      Sean

Okay yeah for the time being I'm gonna go with Harvest Hazards (underwater) being my favorite track BUT OF COURSE THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT

    20. YoshiUnity

      YoshiUnity

That's the power of David Wise, right there. That man is a music composing god. He makes soundtracks so great that you'll have hell figuring out your favorite! XP

  13. Played the MM11 demo today. Wasn't so bad but I'm not getting how I'm supposed to reliably fight the end boss

    1. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

I wasn't either. After the giant form and he kept chucking shit at me, I wasn't figuring out how I was supposed to dodge everything.

Turns out? You AREN'T supposed to. Just keep charge shotting through the blocks he chucks at you and you'll win no problem. It kinda pissed me off that I made things harder than I needed to.

That said, the demo was okay but I don't enjoy it nearly as much as Mighty Gunvolt Burst.

    2. MegasonicZX

      MegasonicZX

What sigma said, it's interesting to note is that you can break a couple of the blocks and either slide under or just jump over whatever is left. It would be pretty cool too if you couldn't cheese it.

    3. Sean

      Sean

Mega Man bosses are supposed to have simple patterns with simple strategies and this felt way too complicated for my liking. If all the bosses are like this, I am NOT looking forward to doing the Wily castle gauntlets.

    4. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

@Waveshocker Sigma You can jump over the blocks on phase 3, it's a bit precise but he never throws the blocks higher than your jump arc.

The best way I found to fight him on all 3 phases was just using the Speed Gear whenever he's about to attack to better position myself, and turn it off before said attack to not waste it.

Only bullshit for me was that hand smashing the ground attack for the giant form, sometimes I can avoid it, other times I can't, it's luck.

    5. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

@Ratcicle King The old school Mega Man player in me keeps forgetting about the gear system and tries to play without it and while it is "possible", it makes the game WAY harder than it needs to be, so I'll have to keep that in mind.

    6. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

The bosses and level designs were made with the gears in mind. While it's possible to beat them without the gears, it's clear they used the fact you can slow down time and power up your shots as a reason to give the bosses some more intense patterns.

    7. MegasonicZX

      MegasonicZX

On the hand smashing attack, throughout the videos i've watched, you can tell which attack he'll use by looking at his hand before he attacks, he telegraphs all of the moves with a very distinct gesture so you know where it's going.

    8. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

He does telegraph, my problem is that even when I'm touching the wall or jumping, the hitbox of the hand still gets me.

    9. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

I'll be honest, I can't get the Power Gear to work at all. Every time I want to use it, it's like I either don't have enough time or I get messed up on the charge shot since it resets the charge you already have if you start it up while charging. The normal shots don't help me much, either.

I dunno, I feel like it's just a bit too much. I like Speed Gear enough, but they seemed like they were making things to where you could still play comfortably without having to rely on the gears but, that isn't the case and I'm really disappointed by that. I just wanna run through the place like a normal Mega Man game and maybe use some optional techniques if I feel like it. Mighty Gunvolt Burst lets me do that and gives me a shitload of cool customization options without anything getting in the way. I can play that game in whatever way I want.

      This game? Not so much.

    10. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

Ehh I'm fine with it, a common problem with Mega Man is that of all the 10 games, the last couple of them felt a bit too more of the same. Throwing in something new to spice things up was the best idea, and the gear system is great since it enhances both main gameplay points of Mega Man, the combat and the precise platforming.

    11. Soniman

      Soniman

I like both the addition of more complex Boss strategies and the gear system, both are fine ways to freshen up the iornclad formula, just more about getting usd to them for  me

    12. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

really don't agree about it being an inherently good thing just cause it's different when it honestly wasn't needed before. It doesn't feel like it's enhancing the combat and platforming at all but instead is shifting the focus of it all on itself. it doesn't feel seamless and natural to have it implemented to me.

But this is a demo of an older build so I'll see how things are when the game actually comes out. Maybe things will be improved.

Or maybe I just need to get better at the game and learn to play the game the way it wants me to play it. Hopefully I'll end up actually liking that way once I get used to it, unlike what happened with Sonic Mania.

    13. Sean

      Sean

I want upward and diagonal aiming

    14. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

Being able to aim the shots would break the game's design philosophy, since half of the combat in MM is finding the right way to aim at the enemy. It'd end up turning most of the enemy killing mindless and boring, just look at MMX7 or Bass in 10.

    15. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

Once again, I disagree since I've never really though that highly of or enjoyed that aspect of Mega Man and really enjoy diagonal aiming with Bass and in MGB. Gonna agree with Sean on this one.

    16. MegasonicZX

      MegasonicZX

You probably might like contra then since i'm also in agreement with keeping the design philosophy the same. Plenty of other similar 2D action platformers have diagonal aiming but megaman has always worked really well with the straight line of fire style gameplay.

    17. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

Free aiming would also need a handicap, Bass(And Axl in X8) has something of the sort with his shots being weaker, not being able to charge and not being able to move while firing. Otherwise it'd become ridiculously broken like the Metal Blades.

    18. Waveshocker Sigma

      Waveshocker Sigma

You said "not being able to charge" twice. lol

But while I'm perfectly fine with those kind of handicaps, I love being broken by default in games to where the only thing impeding my progress is my own ineptitude rather than a lack of good tools done solely for the sake of "we don't want you being too good or having too much fun".

I'm the kind of person who wants Sonic in Mania to have Insta-Shield, Drop Dash and Super Peel-Out all at once instead of having to switch because being able to use them all just makes more sense and would be more fun. (Though, in truth, I'd be fine with just having Insta-Shield being the default skill since it should be.) It's a big part of why I don't like Sonic Mania.

Anywho, agree to disagree. We know what we like. =D

    19. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

Ah, thanks, I wanted to say ''not being able to move while firing''. Guess my lack of sleep caught up.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Sonic Team constantly haunt themselves by not designing levels that aren't 2D, A to B beelines.

I don't expected them to deliver what is basically the polar opposite of that.

      Shattered Crystal was a Metroidvania.

Unfortunately, it also sucks, Sonic or otherwise.

Sean wants a good Sonic Metroidvania.

      I want a good Metroidvania.

The whole world wants a good Sonic Metroidvania.

Even Hitler wanted a good Sonic Metroidvania.

Is that so much to ask?

    6. Sean

      Sean

Yeah it doesn't. I want something for the main series with the scope and flair of something like Hollow Knight. New speed/spinning abilities as you progress, an incredible atmosphere that permeates throughout the overworld, pockets of civilization with characters you get to know over the course of the story. A Sonic game that's defined by its atmosphere and world would get me extremely excited for it.

    7. KHCast

      KHCast

Mania team + open metroidvania styled level design = success?

    8. Wraith

      Wraith

I think this could work really well if you leaned hard into the sequence breaking/shortcut side of metroidvania.

I think its hard to imagine for most because of how 'rigid' MVs tend to but Sonic was the one that broke the rule of platformers having to be rigid in the first place.

    9. KHCast

      KHCast

Now that I think about it, could the Adventure format work for a 3D metroidvania?

    10. Sean

      Sean

I definitely would want the game to emphasize speed and taking shortcuts that the main series is known for and not just a Super Metroid clone. I think in the right hands it could turn out to be a creative game that practically promotes speedrunning and encourages/challenges players to figure out ways to tear through it optimally.

    11. PublicEnemy1

      PublicEnemy1

In terms of fangames, have you played Sonic Chrono Adventure? I feel like it's a pretty solid Sonic Metroidvania.

    12. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Sonic Chrono Adventure pretty much proves that the Metroidvania format would not work for a traditional Sonic game at all.

If they ever decided to do a Sonic-themed Metroidvania, it’ll probably be something like Tails’ Adventure 2.

    13. Sean

      Sean

I'll never understand the argument that since something has already been tried before and the results weren't good that means it could never work

    14. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

      Simple

If it didn’t work so well the first time, but still had a few concepts and ideas worth revisiting and improving, then yeah, it could be potentially be good the second time around.

If it didn’t work so well the first time and there wasn’t really anything that could be improved that can make it work, then yeah, maybe it can’t be done all that great.

Course, I could possibly be wrong about that, but Chrono Adventure definitely gave me that vibe.

    15. Sean

      Sean

This forum is really no fun

    16. Wraith

      Wraith

Sonic fangames arent even good proof that 2D sonic works if we want to go there. Let a professional do it before you write it off

    17. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Dude, you don’t need professionals to show whatever an concept can work or not. Even the smallest of teams can still manage to make even the most bizarre concept shine. There wasn’t anything quite like Minecraft before it’s release.

The reason why I initially thought the whole Sonic-Metroidvania thing could work is because with Chrono Adventure, it had showed how a massive contrast between the two formats. Metroidvanias are all about exploring one huge map and finding secrets within it, while Sonic’s about speeding through a series of levels in the fastest time possible. It’s like mixing two things that don’t really belong together. Thinking about it now, though, I guess there are a couple of ways it could work (like making it more speedrun-oriented and adding waypoints to make backtracking less tedious), but idk. There’s something about the idea that doesn’t mesh well with me

    18. Tornado

      Tornado

I'm amused by how obviously that it wouldn't work because of some irrelevant fan game when one of the highest regarded entries in the entire franchise was absolutely lousy with Metroidvania elements.

like it totally controls fine, it's surprisingly glitch free considering it's one of the first major 3D games, and I loved the optional goal system. Having trouble trying to get a certain star? No worries! Just pick a different level, you'll be able to do enough simply to beat the game. It was a wonderful system.

I don't know, Mario controls really clunky, the levels feel pretty lifeless, and with the exception of levels like Dire Dire Docks, Rainbow Ride, and that other water place with the rising and lowering water, the level tropes are as bland as they come

I just personally don't like it

  16. Speaking as someone who ADORED Guardians of the Galaxy when it came out, I think that movie officially ruined superhero movies, particularly MCU ones where every single MCU movie has to absolutely be just like Guardians in tone and humor.

    1. Sean

      Sean

I haven't seen many recent MCU movies admittedly, but considering I didn't care much for Homecoming and I absolutely fucking hated Ragnarok, the latter which got stellar reviews and many are clamoring as setting a new gold standard for Marvel movies, I think I'm officially done with comic book movies now. Even Wonder Woman, as good as it was, couldn't revitalize my interest in the genre again.

    2. Mando-Whirl-Wind

    4. Sean

      Sean

The cynical self-aware tone? The constant need to subvert itself at every single possible turn? The obnoxious old-school hit single that plays during some pivotal fight scenes? Literally every character being an edgy sarcastic asshole?

Thor: Ragnarok just another fucking Guardians of the Galaxy movie if you ask me. It's terrible because it represents everything I've grown to hate about MCU in one convenient package.

      thorrible?

    8. Soniman

      Soniman

Yeah I don't see it.. I just saw entertaining memorable characters and a fun movie. Considering Thor movies tried doing the serious "dark" route and were boring and bad with nothing memorable about them, this is nothing but am improvement to me

    9. Sean

      Sean

That pun amused me more than any joke in Ragnarok.

    10. Wraith

      Wraith

      I didn't care for Spider-Man either but I haven't seen ragnarok yet.

I mostly agree about the humor, but I'm hoping ragnarok being by a better director than james gunn can just result in enough actually good jokes for me to like the movie.

Guardians gets a lot of love for its writing but it's honestly really hit or miss.

    11. Sean

      Sean

Guardians 2 really exemplified that sub-series' problems to me, and even after rewatching the first film, I'm nowhere near as fond of it now as I was back when it felt new and fresh.

    12. Kuzu

      Kuzu

It's amazing how fast you turned against it considering Guardians is only three years old.

I understand though, MCU has been rather...hit or miss lately.

    13. Wraith

      Wraith

I like Guardians 2 but for it's characters and themes. It's humor and writing in general is as hit or miss as the first.

Homecoming was more of a mixed bag for me. It felt bloated, confused, and kind of unintentionally made peter a bit of a dick.

    14. Sean

      Sean

Homecoming felt like every few minutes it was breathing down my neck and muttering into my ear "hey in case you haven't heard we got Spidey in MCU now" which was a fact I picked up on many times when I watched Civil War

    15. Wraith

      Wraith

The MCU stuff was kinda suffocating too yeah.

I just want good stories. I don't want to be reminded of other movies every couple minutes.

    16. Radiant Hero Ike

      Radiant Hero Ike

Guardians 2 made me burst into tears.

      Spoiler

When Yondu died. Well, specifically when they all celebrated him passing on, even after they told him he'd never have that.

A movie hasn't done that to me in ages.

Ragnarok only felt somewhat similar to Guardians, I quite liked it.

    17. Sean

      Sean

Honestly at this point the majority of my frustration comes with my getting tired of cinematic universes. Even at their best, each movie feels like a two-hour advertisement for future ones, when really I just want something that stands on its own and doesn't feel the need to tie into an even bigger story down the line.

I'm also worn out from seeing so many heroes with personal vices and sarcastic dialogue, which was what helped make Captain America and Wonder Woman stand out to me as such likable heroes. They're selfless do-gooders who just want to do the right thing and it's hilarious ironic how that in itself feels subversive compared to the rest of the superhero scene these days.

    18. Milo

      Milo

I haven't seen Spider-Man (or Dr. Strange, for that matter) yet, so I can't comment on those films; but I do think Ragnarok's sense of humor is pretty different from the GotG films in that it's way more focused on the comedy aspect and didn't have any...(what's the word) "edge" or envelope-pushing elements to it like those films did; it was more of a goofball / campy comedy. Guardians did try to balance it with more dramatic character moments and while it may had been handled okay in the first one (it's been a while since I saw it) I definitely did feel they were pretty unbalanced in the second one. And Civil War did have its comedic moments but I also do think the overall tone of the film was significantly more serious than the Phase 3 MCU films we've gotten so far. Then again I'm someone who's seriously considering Ragnarok my personal favorite Phase 3 MCU film so far, so this might not mean anything to you heh.

I do understand the comedy complaint though, I've been seeing the MCU critiques about the comedic elements for quite a while on the comic book / film group over at GAF / ResetERA; and it doesn't help that a. we've had some high-profile serious comic book films that completely shit the bed in their attempts at it, such as Fant4stic and Batman v Superman; and b. DCEU at least has been attempting to course correct in line with that to mixed results. Many agree that WW was fine, but one of the reasons Suicide Squad turned awful was because of WB doing reshoots/cuts to make it more light-hearted by means of damage control following BvS; and from the look of things, Justice League is going to be a hot mess because of it since you have a film with the established movie universe tone and direction of Zack Snyder also featuring Whedon's writing and post-production work after Snyder stepped off the project.

I wouldn't declare superhero / comic book films dead though; maybe in regards to the MCU, and probably DCEU depending where they go from here, probably, but I would at least keep an eye out on Fox's Marvel films, which seem to be trying to take their comic-book films in other genres. Say what you will about Fant4stic (serious attempt at light-hearted comic that failed miserably) and Deadpool (black comedy / parody); but Logan is a fantastic Western-styled film that carries a very bleak tone, and their next X-Men film, The New Mutants, is going for more of a horror movie approach.

    19. Sean

      Sean

Oh I've actually been wanting to watch Deadpool and Logan for quite some time now. Don't really know why I haven't gotten around to them; I'm not sure if Deadpool would be up my alley but Logan seems extremely interesting. Also, I haven't kept up with X-Men in a really long time, but some of those movies were really fun to watch (the last one I saw was the second Wolverine movie which I thought was decent) and nowhere near the spectrum of obnoxiousness that MCU films tend to reach for me.

Maybe "Guardians/MCU ruined superhero movies" is a stretchy claim for me to make but I often forget that there are other superhero movies being made that aren't part of MCU or DCEU due to the monopoly those two properties are currently holding. I still think Guardians had a pretty negative impact on the MCU itself from my perspective.

Oh that sucks. We don't have Black Widows here, just those annoying roach pricks. Of course, they're not going to infect as with a deadly venom.

    13. goku262002

I'm in the desert. black widows are nothing compared to camel spiders.

    14. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

^ I looked up spiders to double check my research and Solifugae (camel spiders) aren't venomous but they can deal a nasty bite.

Black widows are more dangerous however because their venom is very potent and can fuck your shit up.

But hey if you ever need to scare someone throw a camel spider at their face. :P

    15. Phantomime

CAMEL SPIDERS? Oh I have heard of those. Supposedly they are HUGE.

    16. Chibinuva

      Chibinuva

Oh when you said desert and camel I just assumed you meant regular camels. Camels spiders probably hurt like a bitch even if they don't have the lasting effects of the poison.

Black widows mind their own business as long as you don't tick them off they don't bother you. with camel spiders you even go near them they start chasing you. and they eat flesh!

  19. Lost Hex should have been the Little Planet. The Deadly Six could be explained to be space-faring pirates who have commandeered it into their own mutated territory. Sonic collects the Time Stones in order to reverse the damage they inflicted on the Little Planet which makes it look hexagon-shaped for whatever reason. This would be a cool story to me IDK

      ...Please?

    8. Sean

      Sean

Real talk, the art style of SLW, while not quite the same as CD's, did remind me a lot of it, and it even brought back a few of its badniks which haven't been seen in any other game since. Acts are even referred to as "zones" in both games. It would have been great if the plot was reworked into Sonic and friends revisiting the Little Planet and having to rescue it again. For cripe's sake, doesn't that planet show up once a year anyway?

    9. Soniman

      Soniman

@Gregzilla well both games are kind of a cluster fuck so..

    11. FriendBot

      FriendBot

The only badniks that appeared in Lost World that came from CD were the Antons, and they were only at Dessert Ruins. Which is also the only stage theme that wasn't composed by Ohtani, it was Hataya I think?

    12. Soniman

      Soniman

I would be down for a return to little planet

Sonic 4 Episode II, take it or leave it.

    14. Gregzilla

      Gregzilla

SLW's art style certainly invokes the classics with its emphasis on geometric shapes and checkerboard patterns and the like, which is really nice.  Though I do think the focus on lots of empty space with floating platforms and the cylindrical levels make it feel less organic and alive than the old games, especially since the worlds feel a bit like NSMB tropes.

CD borrowed a lot from Sonic 1, but it still felt unabashedly Sonic through and through.  (The JP soundtrack also helped, aww yeeeeaaahhh)

    15. Metal the Mario

      Metal the Mario

Honestly, it would be really neat if the comics did something like that for the eventual Lost World adaptation. That seems like just the kind of connection they would make in an effort to tie all the lore together.

    16. Ratcicle King

      Ratcicle King

@Metal the Mario Dunno, I don't think Ian is allowed to explain stuff that's left open in the game, I think thats one of the rules he can't break in the comic.

Along with Sonic not being allowed to cry.

    17. Metal the Mario

      Metal the Mario

@Ratcicle King Is it? Damn. I would've thought he'd be able to do that given the smaller stuff he's explained, but I guess they wouldn't want SLW messed with since it was their last significant main-series release.

    18. Sean

      Sean

They already screwed up Sonic Unleashed a bunch. Ian could just not reference the Lost Hex altogether and have the Deadly Six invade Little Planet instead.

Were Shield Knight and Black Knight even options in the kickstarter poll that ultimately decided the three extra campaigns?

    6. Wraith

      Wraith

Plague and Specter I can at least see gameplay potential that they ended up realizing. I would have picked other characters but it's whatever

    8. Thigolf

      Thigolf

I'm pretty sure they did the character survey before the game was out and the only two stages demo-ed were King Knight's and Specter Knight's, so I feel like they had an unfair advantage, honestly.

I get they wanted to get their work done/start planning as soon as possible, but I feel like they should've put out the game first and let the characters sink in (work on the Battle Mode while doing so, maybe).

    9. Sean

Man, the more i think about it, the more it sucks.

    16. Sean

      Sean

For the record I wanted Shield Knight the most (in fact at one point I was convinced she WAS coming but as co-op DLC and... I guess I was completely off the mark on that one) but Treasure was my most wanted among the bosses. I honestly don't really care much about Enchantress herself.

    17. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

I don't find anything wrong with the ones we got, though I do admit that I wish we could explore some of the other bosses anyway.

Above anything else, after these modes are done, I prefer Yacht Club would just move on from Shovel Knight already. Between putting way too much time into King Knight's campaign, the unnecessary card gimmicks that could anger people who didn't want King Knight even further, the lack a concrete release date this late in the year, and the fact it's not even the last update... How can they can be considered anything else but "Shovel Knight, Inc." in all but name?
