  1. I've been rewatching the Japanese Unleashed cutscenes and I really appreciate how Tomokazu Seki's werehog sounds like just a regular dude:

      Yeah I don't know what they were going for with his English voice. It's like '06 Silver, but deeper. I don't hate it though, and am grateful it wasn't an "annoying child" or obnoxiously high pitched anime voice. His dialogue is what makes him hard to listen to. The voice itself is inoffensive.

      I don't mind the anime kid voice in Japanese but I don't think it would have translated as well into English. I think this game has one of the better dubs in the series; even though I only replay Sonic games in Japanese, I liked Griffith's performance here better to Shadow and 2006.

      @Wraith If I were limited to Zelda games I'd go with The Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, and Breath of the Wild. BOTW isn't a favorite of mine and it was hard for me to get into, but I immensely appreciate what it was doing and what it offers, and it's one of those games I absolutely would squeeze every drop of playability from it if I were stranded on an island with just the one game.

      @Strong Bad I bounce between TTYD and 64 regarding which one is my favorite Mario RPG but I've come back home to 64 due to it having what I consider to be better map design and the most pure Mario story in the series.

      When I looked at the stream it was already on Metallic Madness, and since I didn't get that far in the final game I assumed it was just a regular playthrough. Maybe if I stuck around longer or earlier and caught this, I'd get a better clue.

  10. Sonic is a kids series. When you see stuff like Chaos destroying a city or Eggman splitting up the planet, I don't think you're meant to interpret those incidents as having a death toll. It's true that lives have been put on stake from time to time like the bombing of Station Square or the ARK's collision course to earth, but the point is that they were successfully averted and characters can move on with their lives and focus on the next adventure, because a lot of series such as Sonic aren't concerned with the off-screen repercussions of the villains' actions. Death only really occurs when it's plot-relevant like in Maria's case; as far as the image of Eggman is concerned he's not a murderer (even if he's an attempted one like in SA2 where he tried to kill Sonic lol). EDIT: I know that people are going to respond to me accusing me of saying death doesn't belong in a children's series like the last time this happened which I'm not advocating at all. I'm saying that death should be taken seriously in kids' media and used only when relevant, and the creators should not depict droves of citizens being slaughtered on-screen or implied off-screen. Murder is not a part of Eggman's character and never has been, he's just a goofy cartoon villain who isn't supposed to be condemned for implied crimes that aren't relevant to his actions or the story or tone.

      I spent the entire fucking evening trying to complete this level without dying so that I could get the S-rank. The part at 5:30 claimed the most deaths from me, what a miserable level lol

      stupid boss too, the cloning attack is unpredictable and feels like it's impossible to dodge.

      Seriously, what's taking SEGA so long for a Steam port? They practically have the code on a silver platter.

      If anything I want this to get a Steam release so that it gets more attention and people can mod it to fix the issues it has compared to the GCN version (poor sound mixing and imperfect controller support being a few). The only mod that exists for this version is a widescreen hack that breaks 2P compatibility. It's otherwise about as functional of a port as the PC version of Sonic Riders is.

      Yes... almost.

      You can't install them from the discs on Windows 10 unfortunately. You'd need a program capable of ripping SafeDisc-protected discs and then install them from the images; this is because SafeDisc hasn't been supported on Windows since W8.

      Once you get that over with, they run just fine, but you might need a program like BorderlessGaming to force windowed fullscreen in order to eliminate the bad screen tearing these two titles have.

      @Strong Guy btw I might be mistaken about the ability to install them on Windows 10 even with the disc image. I just remembered now that what I did was install them in Windows 7 and then copy the installation folder to my Windows 10 computer (along with a no-CD crack). I also had to edit the registry in Sonic Riders' case so that the game's launcher can pick up where the installation folder is due to manually copying it.

      At the same time, every article I read about SafeDisc's broken compatibility says that it's also broken on W7, and I was able to install the games fine using the images, so maybe it's the case on W10 as well? I haven't tried it yet.

      There are many articles out there that explain how to circumvent SafeDisc protected games on W10 so I suggest looking those up if you plan on checking these games out.

      It's a bit confusing, but they renamed Sonic Forces: Speed Battle so now it's just 'Sonic Forces'. SEGA probably wants everyone to forget there was a console version, I suspect.

  17. Only counting versions that I "deliberately" bought and are not part of a compilation like Sonic Mega Collection or Sega 3D Classics Collection, I have both the iOS and Android versions of Sonic 1, the ROM that's sold on Steam, and the standalone 3D Sonic 1 on the 3DS eshop.

  19. Honestly, I don't blame anyone for thinking back then that humans weren't around back in the Genesis games. You never really got to see them and the western branches really played up the pro-green interpretation of the series, because Eggman remained the only human while more and more anthros got introduced. Aside from the games, the main version(s) of Sonic that were in the public eye were the various western cartoons and comics, which featured few to no humans, and certainly no main human characters. The way I see it, SA1 introducing them as interactable NPCs was more of an addendum rather than a contradiction, it simply updated our knowledge of what the games' world was like. Stuff like Man of the Year and Tails Sky Patrol/G Sonic are so obscure that I can't really use those as a "see? you should have known there were humans all along" type of rebuttal. And things like paintings and statues are typically representative of stuff that existed in the past, so...
  20. If anything I feel the series has historically shied away from animal NPCs than human ones. It took until Forces to get any sight of Sonic-like citizens hanging around the main Sonic world, and Sonic X only featured them in the international pilot. It's really weird and makes me wonder why anthro characters aren't ever seen hanging around Station Square or in any of the continents in Sonic Unleashed. "why are there humans" is a question that never entered my mind, rather it's been "why are there only humans (except in Blaze's world and Forces)"

    This Sonic 1 8bit remake is a good effort but it's ruined (pretty badly) by a lot of the differences from the original version like the lack of rolling physics, sluggish controls, and horrible camera placement that makes it impossible to see where you will land after a jump, as well as using (for some FUCKING reason) the horrible MS version of Jungle Zone 2 that uses ratchet scrolling and kills you when you touch the bottom of the screen. All of the extra features like Tails/Knuckles and spin-dash don't amount to anything to me if it doesn't play at least as good as the original version. I'm gonna give the rest of this fangame a hard pass.

      It's like the creators looked at Sonic 4 and thought that would be a great way to remake Sonic 1 8bit. You can't roll down slopes - I tried, and Sonic just skids to a halt like in Sonic 4. I did notice they removed a slope in Green Hill 1 that launches you in the air, but I didn't think much of it until I encountered Jungle Zone and attempted to roll on the vines. His acceleration is slow too.

      I did play this and it was okay, I assumed the lack of rolling was something they just hadn't done yet coz it was a WIP.  Regardless, the level design changes are just kinda weird, it's not like Sonic Chaos' remake where the whole point is to provide expanded levels, it feels more like they expanded the levels when they felt like it and trimmed bits out that didn't work anymore due to missing features, the game constantly flipflops between being a 1:1 port and an expansion, and sadly the expansion stuff is kinda eh.

      Hopefully if they can get the game mechanics 1:1, they might be able to add a "proper" classic mode that doesn't mess with the level design, and then they're free to go hog-wild with their own redesigns and have them more consistently paced in their appearance across the game.

      Including Marble Zone as a secret level is a nice gesture too, but I have to say the visuals didn't feel in line with the rest of the game.  It looks almost the same as the Mega Drive version "but 8-bit" rather than being a stylised downgrade in a similar, flexible way (like how Master System Green Hill has a solid colour for sky and sea, with the distant islands providing the illusion of them being seperate - or the heavy black usage that Labyrinth/Scrap Brain have).

      But yeah, in it's current state it feels very "fangame creator did what they felt like" rather than a faithful port.  Which they have every right to do, it's their passion project, but they do risk this lukewarm reception if their changes aren't widely considered on-point.

      They're already working on Sonic 2 MS, so I have a feeling that they're preparing to move on from 1 if they haven't already. It felt like a finished project to me, so unless they address the remake's shortcomings and commit to improving it rather than moving onto 2 and risking another botched effort, I'm not going to keep an active eye on future updates.

      Oof, sure hope not, rolling was a pretty minor mechanic in Sonic 1 but in Sonic 2 it was a massive part of it.  If they can't be arsed to program it then the Sonic 2 remake is gonna be a joke.


      EDIT: Tried the Sonic 2 download, it's called a BETA but it's more like a pre-alpha tbh.  Sonic handles slightly worse than he did in Sonic Genesis for the GBA so yeah.  Their original special stage concept isn't bad and feels in-line with the game's style (also a good use of the Good Ending theme for something else since I prefer the "Bad" Ending theme) though it's a little too simple at the moment.

  25. Another thing I don't like about the anti-FF sentiment is people accusing the fans of not being able to let go of them and let IDW be its own thing (whatever that means). I don't see how wanting to see certain elements from certain continuities is inhibiting identity of what's supposed to be an adaptation of something else anyway - is wanting Tails in Sonic Underground, or Sonic as the lead focus in Sonic X, contrary to what those shows were trying to do because if it had adhered closer to game elements they "wouldn't have been its own thing"?

    In fact, why is this complaint never levied against people who want to see the AoStH gang in the comics, or the classic characters in IDW/the games?

      There isn't actually a good argument against it beyond them being "non-canon" or "non-SEGASonic" characters, as if that actually makes a difference when we have characters like Amy and Charmy getting started in spin-off mangas and Sticks appearing on the Sonic Channel and in several spin-off games.

      Even Antoine had more of an established personality and history than Ray or Mighty, and those guys made a playable appearance in a mainstream platformer just fine. 

      Character role overlap "Rotor and Tails cant coexist because both are good with mechanics" (and Wave gets a pass?) is also a really stupid argument, while I'm blasting about it.

      As mentioned before I'm perfectly okay with people not liking the FFs and not wanting to see them in the games based on that reasoning. I just wish this didn't resort to attacking the fans and making up nonsensical arguments to get their point across. It's FINE to just simply not care about them. I don't want Sticks in the games or IDW because I don't like her but if there's someone who likes her and earnestly wants her back then I'm not gonna go all Ace Attorney on their asses. I just want to talk about the things I like in Sonic, man
