I didn't even know you *could* map sidestep to the shoulder buttons for Colours

    5. Sean

      Sean

You just have to map left and right to the shoulder buttons, makes it functionally identical to the sidestep in other games except it makes Sonic move left and right when not in sidestep sections

      Strickerx5

The same could be said about any Sonic game of that era tbh.

I honestly think that I can pinpoint the exact moment I went full on PC to when I was first played through the forest section in adabat at 60fps (through the Unleashed Generations mod). There was simply no turning back after that.

    7. shdowhunt60

Sonic Colors played through Dolphin is fucking gorgeous. Like it's amazing what Sonic Team could squeeze out of the Wii in the first place, and it's surprisingly just well the game scales up with resolution. There's lots of moment in the game that just makes my jaw just drop.

It really is disappointing how, after Generations, I just can't say that about a Sonic game any more. Forces in particular was just such an ugly, ugly game.

    8. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Oh, Sonic Forces is technically impressive, it really does look good. But with a poor art direction, it never appears as such. It’s like every “realistic” game these days, where it does look amazing, but only on a technical level.

Compare that to Unleashed and Colours, which both have a very strong art direction, and both know clearly what they were looking to achieve, even if Colours was technically weak, and the Unleashed was too powerful for the hardware it was released on.

  2. @Ferno If you dig One Piece's music you should check out Gravity Rush/Daze's OST sometime. Same composer (Kouhei Tanaka) and some of the music is OP as hell:

Just now seeing this post and wow that is One Piece af

But other than that I always told myself I'd get Gravity Rush in general if I ever get off my butt and get another Sony console

    2. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

I can’t recommend Gravity Rush enough. It’s a massively underrated Sony property, and it’s a crying shame that Sony didn’t give Remastered a proper push on PS4, likely causing Gravity Rush 2’s sales problems.

If you do get another Sony console, GR/GR2 should definitely be one of your first pick ups, it’s a fantastic series that needs more love.

@Ryannumber1Scarer I 100% completed the first game and enjoyed my time with it. Even picked up a European physical copy since US ones are scarce.

      Spoiler

it's also the only Sony exclusive IP I think is worth a damn

Also installed and got working Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic CD (1996) using Sega PC Reloaded. All of the games come with a mirrored mode which makes for a really fun and somewhat new experience.

      TheOcelot

I'd like to one day be able to play the PC version of 3D Blast even if it's not quite as good as the Saturn version.

    3. Sean

      Sean

PC version of 3D Blast was my first ever Sonic game so I'm glad I held onto my copy and can get it working again. Playing these ports again, they hold up surprisingly well and were solid efforts back in the 90s, although CD '96 has a few odd collision issues that I don't recall happening in the Sega CD version.

  7. Alright, I've about had it with this attitude of yours, so I'm gonna give you one last fucking chance to shape up. This is your final warning I will give you on this entire forum, so next time I see you act antagonistic and immature like this anywhere else, you are getting a strike and a suspension. And if you think about responding to me, as you tend to, think carefully about what you say because this includes responses to this warning.
  8. Huh. Very interesting. I just rewatched this 20 minute video on the psychology behind MTX in F2P mobile games and how to rope "whales" into companies' ecosystem. Not a single fucking thing about children taking advantage of their irresponsible parents' credit cards. It's almost as if that's not the main source of income for the mobile industry and is at best a very nice yet ultimately trivial bonus for companies.

  11. This was retweeted by @SVKaiser, developer of the Doom 64/Powerslave/Turok PC ports, and @pripyatbeast (CEO of Night Dive Studios responsible for releasing the updated Turok and Blood ports) made a cryptic tweet hinting at this before deleting it. It's definitely a thing and is most likely going to be based on the Doom64EX port.
  12. Since it was a mistake, there's not much left to discuss.
  13. We're not doing this. Also you guys report the topic next time instead of spamming it because this shit gets on my nerves.
  14. I'm gonna peace out for a while, the KyoAni tragedy is weighing me down too much and I haven't been able to think straight all day.

  15. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-49027178

I'm devastated by this. KyoAni is one of the greatest animation studios and has produced some of my favorite anime of all time such as Clannad and Nichijou - and now some of the people who helped shape my interests and personal creativity are dead. My heart goes out to them and their families.

    1. Ferno

      Ferno

Torn up about it. The person who did it is heartless. So much original production art of past and future projects is probably lost, and more importantly, actual people are gone now and other's lives are permanently changed because of this. Families have lost loved ones over this. It's a sad day for the industry.

Can't wait for all the self-proclaimed "top-tier shitposters" on Twitter to see this and say some edgy shit about how anime is finally dead!!!!!! or how we finally destroyed weeb shit!!!!!!!!!. Then you go on their profile and it's, like, nothing but retweets of ecchi feet pics.

Was never a big fan of KyoAni but no company ever deserves to go through something like this. It's horrible.

    5. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

A sickening act of violence on a group of people who only sought to bring happiness into the lives of others. My heart goes out to the families hurt and I hope that the guy who did this is brought to justice.

To have that much hate it your soul... this is a horrific day for both the industry and humanity as a whole.

    6. PaddyFancy

      PaddyFancy

Can we not speculate the further ramifications of the lack of humanity in shitposters anymore than what's already been appallingly displayed today? I don't need to think about that on top of this.

    7. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Holy shit, I’m more appalled by the person who did this, and their apparent motives. Like, how the hell do you justify burning down a building with people inside it, with the intent of murder? My God, that is absolutely horrible.

26 people lost their lives over a petty squabble. I couldn’t even begin to comprehend it. For the people that survived, I hope they’ll be okay and recover from what is no doubt a traumatic event. And for the horrible person who committed this crime, let him be locked away with plenty of time to realise how wrong he was to take several lives over whatever the heck he was on about.

My best wishes to the victims and their families, and to everyone who was injured and affected by this event.

  16. Thinking about how Sega ruined the Sonic mobile Taxman remakes and getting mad again

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

Don't remind me, every experience with Forever has been a disaster for me. I recently decided to try the Forever version of SMB2. I had purchased it a long time ago (Before Forever), and when I tried to restore purchase, it bugs out and does nothing, meaning I'm stuck with the ad-riddled version.

And for Sonic CD - I again bought it awhile ago, downloaded Forever's version, tried to restore purchase, and instead of just giving me the ad-free version, it made me download the older non-Forever version of the game, which would be fine - except fucking oops - the non-Forever app is completely broken and non-functional now.

      Nice fucking work SEGA.

    2. Milo

      Milo

To say nothing that Sonic 1/2 Remastered are still stuck on mobile devices for some reason...

    3. Sean

      Sean

@Ryannumber1gamer Yeah that sounds like my experiences with it. Restoring my purchases didn't work at all and I was still stuck with in-game ads and glitchy controls that weren't there at all before Sega updated them. I actually looked up a method on how to rollback to an older version on iOS, which was a long and drawn-out process that I don't think I can recall how I did it. Needless to say, I made fucking sure to back up my 1/2/CD pre-Forever purchases in cold storage and modified the files so that my phone won't prompt me to update.

As far as I'm concerned, Sega actually robbed me of my games that I paid money for. So they can get fucked.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I feel like they've been teasing us for far too long with Skies of Arcadia HD.

I do hope killing off Vyse and Aika in the anime adaptation of Valkyria Chronicles wasn't a sign of it not happening.

    4. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Sega doesn’t like listening to fans. We would have gotten a SMB Deluxe rerelease or a new game instead of just Banana Blitz in HD.

  19. It's not that I think Iizuka is doing a stellar job, but I legitimately cannot think of a single person to replace him, especially since finding people who are passionate about Sonic is a difficult endeavor. He seems to care a lot about the series - if anything I get the impression that his input is the only remaining heart Sonic has these days. He helped get Sonic Mania made, after all. I think Sega's management (or lack thereof) probably deserves way more flak because I really wonder just how much creative control he's able to exercise when Sega is able to greenlight horeshit such as Sonic Boom and the Paramount film. Look man Sonic Mania is in my top 3 favorite games in the series but let's count our lucky stars that he was able to get away with just one game under his call and not be driven out the way Sega drove away Naka. Mania was a passion project and sequels should only happen when the people involved really want to make it.
  20. Speaking of genres I'd be interested in seeing the series tackle again, a Sonic metroidvania would be so rad

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Sonic Team constantly haunt themselves by not designing levels that aren't 2D, A to B beelines.

I don't expected them to deliver what is basically the polar opposite of that.

    2. Sean

      Sean

That doesn't have anything to do with me wanting a Sonic metroidvania

    3. KHCast

      KHCast

Wasn’t fire & ice sort of a Metroidvania style? Or was that the original boom 3DS game?

    4. Supah Berry

    5. Tara

      Tara

      Shattered Crystal was a Metroidvania.

Unfortunately, it also sucks, Sonic or otherwise.

Sean wants a good Sonic Metroidvania.

      I want a good Metroidvania.

The whole world wants a good Sonic Metroidvania.

Even Hitler wanted a good Sonic Metroidvania.

Is that so much to ask?

    6. Sean

      Sean

Yeah it doesn't. I want something for the main series with the scope and flair of something like Hollow Knight. New speed/spinning abilities as you progress, an incredible atmosphere that permeates throughout the overworld, pockets of civilization with characters you get to know over the course of the story. A Sonic game that's defined by its atmosphere and world would get me extremely excited for it.

    7. KHCast

      KHCast

Mania team + open metroidvania styled level design = success?

    8. Wraith

      Wraith

I think this could work really well if you leaned hard into the sequence breaking/shortcut side of metroidvania.

I think its hard to imagine for most because of how 'rigid' MVs tend to but Sonic was the one that broke the rule of platformers having to be rigid in the first place.

    9. KHCast

      KHCast

Now that I think about it, could the Adventure format work for a 3D metroidvania?

    10. Sean

      Sean

I definitely would want the game to emphasize speed and taking shortcuts that the main series is known for and not just a Super Metroid clone. I think in the right hands it could turn out to be a creative game that practically promotes speedrunning and encourages/challenges players to figure out ways to tear through it optimally.

    11. PublicEnemy1

      PublicEnemy1

In terms of fangames, have you played Sonic Chrono Adventure? I feel like it's a pretty solid Sonic Metroidvania.

    12. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Sonic Chrono Adventure pretty much proves that the Metroidvania format would not work for a traditional Sonic game at all.

If they ever decided to do a Sonic-themed Metroidvania, it’ll probably be something like Tails’ Adventure 2.

    13. Sean

      Sean

I'll never understand the argument that since something has already been tried before and the results weren't good that means it could never work

    14. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

      Simple

If it didn’t work so well the first time, but still had a few concepts and ideas worth revisiting and improving, then yeah, it could be potentially be good the second time around.

If it didn’t work so well the first time and there wasn’t really anything that could be improved that can make it work, then yeah, maybe it can’t be done all that great.

Course, I could possibly be wrong about that, but Chrono Adventure definitely gave me that vibe.

    15. Sean

      Sean

This forum is really no fun

    16. Wraith

      Wraith

Sonic fangames arent even good proof that 2D sonic works if we want to go there. Let a professional do it before you write it off

    17. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Dude, you don’t need professionals to show whatever an concept can work or not. Even the smallest of teams can still manage to make even the most bizarre concept shine. There wasn’t anything quite like Minecraft before it’s release.

The reason why I initially thought the whole Sonic-Metroidvania thing could work is because with Chrono Adventure, it had showed how a massive contrast between the two formats. Metroidvanias are all about exploring one huge map and finding secrets within it, while Sonic’s about speeding through a series of levels in the fastest time possible. It’s like mixing two things that don’t really belong together. Thinking about it now, though, I guess there are a couple of ways it could work (like making it more speedrun-oriented and adding waypoints to make backtracking less tedious), but idk. There’s something about the idea that doesn’t mesh well with me

    18. Tornado

      Tornado

I'm amused by how obviously that it wouldn't work because of some irrelevant fan game when one of the highest regarded entries in the entire franchise was absolutely lousy with Metroidvania elements.

  23. Still thinking about Toy Story 4. Ultimately the conclusion I've come to is that I can totally respect it for the messages it was trying to convey, and on paper those same messages can certainly match the caliber of the ones found in the original trilogy. However, TS4's themes were executed in a way that just didn't resonate with me at all. I will concede that I can't fault Pixar for attempting a continuation like this, but for me personally they just screwed up. I don't hate TS4 for existing, or for even trying its best, but I hate how it doesn't do enough to justify itself.
