  1. I actually really disliked Toy Story 4, I didn't expect that since I was anticipating a good movie whose existence simply wasn't necessary, but the whole production felt scaled back from the quality of the original three and there were so many elements this time that were actively working against my enjoyment of it. I almost wish I could un-see it.

I haven't seen it yet. But the ads on TV for sure don't make it look great.

    3. Sean

      Sean

Yeah, I'll list off some of my biggest problems, in order of priority. Some major spoilers:

      Spoiler

      - Bonnie's role made me pretty upset, as did the general themes of the movie. She loses total interest in Woody and doesn't even notice that he's gone at the end when he decides to stay behind with Bo. Before I get anyone rebutting this, I'm perfectly aware that this is realistic behavior for a child. However, this still rubs me the wrong way for a few reasons. First, this is fiction and it really goes against the satisfying, open-ended conclusion of TS3 where Andy passes him along to Bonnie asking to take care of her. Yes, the reality is that she'd probably lose interest in him and the other toys quickly enough due to her age, but this isn't something I want to see happen in a movie anymore than I want to see a film about Andy taking college courses, getting a job, and learning how to do taxes. Second, it's really unfair that it's ONLY Woody, among the main characters, that she neglects. it doesn't cross the line into straight-up maliciousness, but it feels extremely contrived that he would be the only toy of hers that she loses interest in and no longer cares about. It's just not a premise I can stomach. It's not believable when you pit it against previously established notions in the trilogy.

      - Gabby, despite being a subversion of what you'd expect from Pete and Lotso, fell totally flat for me. I didn't like that she did something as awful as taking Woody's voice box against his will and went virtually unpunished for it, not to mention how the movie goes pretty overboard in trying to make her seem sympathetic to the point of refusing to acknowledge her actions and flaws toward the end of the film. I wasn't feeling sorry for her, I was annoyed at how she got away rewarded and scot-free. I get that it ties into the message of "not every child will care about you" that is the reason Bonnie abandons Woody, but there ought to have been better ways to handle this than make her the actual fucking villain of the first half, giving you little to no reason to root for her in the first place or provide any sympathetic qualities until much later. I think Gabby is a great character on paper, but I was left feeling mixed on how I should be feeling about her.

      - Bo didn't end up contributing as much to the movie as I hoped. I wasn't a fan of her revamped role judging from the trailers, but the full movie handles her better than I expected. She gets a lot of screentime, more than anyone else aside from Woody, but it really annoyed me upon realizing that her contribution has mostly to do with the film's message without having an arc of her own. In short, she feels like a tool for Woody's development rather than a character.

      - Aside from Woody, Bo, and Buzz, every other original cast member gets extremely little screentime. Even Buzz feels kind of worthless this time around and simply Woody's right-hand man. TS3 was guilty of this, to be fair, but it had an interesting twist involving Lotso's brainwashing of him, at least. Plus, he and Jessie had really good chemistry in 3 that... somehow gets totally ignored in this movie despite it being a romance between Woody and Bo? Whatever, my point is that Woody is the only character that feels like has any substantial development or focus, overshadowing all the others to degrees that no other movie in the trilogy had.

      - Key and Peele were annoying and nearly all their jokes brought the entire film to a grinding halt more times than I'd like. Keanu's character felt like Ken 2.0. I wish I enjoyed them but I just couldn't figure why they were here other than for the jokes, which I didn't think were very funny involving them.

    4. Stasis

      Stasis

Spot on with everything you said, and the only thing I can really take from the Woody movie is that he always puts others first and it's time he thought about himself. Yay, I guess?

  3. Mysteries of the Sith fucking sucks lol. Jedi Knight had its problems but remained mostly fun, MotS just feels like it doubles down on the stuff I didn't like from JK (poor/unfair enemy placement, obnoxiously obscure puzzles, level design that doesn't properly guide you in the right direction). Also I'm playing on easy (I did JK on medium) and I feel like I'm having a harder time with it 😐

      Also jesus christ the cutscenes:

These are some of the worst and most unpleasant cutscenes I've ever seen in a 3D game.

  4. Super Mario 64's code has been decompiled. Native ports to other platforms, including PC, is finally possible:

  5. There really is no reasoning with this mentality, is there? Conveniently ignoring the 20+ years of the Archie comic's existence and the handful of reinventions it went through even before the reboot mean apparently nothing when they were initially created for a TV show that was more or less following the narrative SoA was trying to push with its version of Sonic anyway. If you still think that their origins alone are what deem them to the garbage bin and that absolutely nothing can be done to salvage them then there's nothing else for me to comment other than the fanbase's views haven't actually changed whatsoever. In fact, if you really subscribe to this thinking then please tell me why there isn't a problem with Iizuka reinventing the Chaotix for Sonic Heroes? He explicitly treated them as new characters revamped to fit the modern games' needs, rather than as "returning" characters generally. The reason that this can't be applied to non-game characters is because...??
  6. Character backstories can be revamped to suit the needs of the Sega canon. In fact, Ian did a pretty decent job of doing this with the rebooted Archie. For example Sonic isn't a childhood friend of Sally's anymore and just met her at some point during one of his adventures. The only reason people don't want the freedom fighters in the games is because of bias against non-game characters that permeated in the fanbase for years before IDW came along and magically changed all that due to vindicating the fans clamoring for all of Archie to be thrown out despite Ian's best efforts. Also... Just like how Shadow, Jet, and Johnny clash with Metal Sonic's role as Sonic's rival, right? To contribute to the topic at hand, I don't know about Whisper but I think characters like Tangle and Bunnie would be great fits for the Sega games gameplay-wise. I think Tangle's natural abilities could even lend itself pretty well to the Genesis games' one-button-only design by having her tail extend to a nearby tree, pole, etc. in mid-air, and you can swing on them as long as you hold down the button. Sort of like a grappling hook I guess. There's more you can do with her in a 3D space though with more buttons at your disposal, and that goes for Bunnie too who can do a ton with her unique robotic abilities. The Bunnie in Sonic 1 hack by E-122-Psi is one of my favorite characters hacks to play so I'd probably build off of that, especially her long-range and hovering techniques.
  7. Stranger Things 3 was good. It had its problems especially in the first half but I think it was a general improvement over the second season.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

Steve is some of the best character development I’ve ever seen. It’s rare for me to think “this guy is a scumbag” and then later go “holy shit he’s one of my favorite characters”

Next closest I can think of is Pacifica from Gravity Falls but we rarely saw her after she mellowed.

    4. Sean

      Sean

I was also a Robin fan from the first episode, it usually takes longer for me to latch onto new characters than previously established ones but she complements Steve incredibly well

  8. I think ever since I've paid more and more attention to indies - both major stuff like Hollow Knight and minor weird projects like what you see on itch.io - I've been a lot happier with gaming overall because AAA gaming is such a comparatively minor interest to me. It doesn't matter if AAA starts to suck because I'll always be able to find stuff I'm interested in in the indie scene. There's so many good games, in fact, that's it's overwhelming and I lowkey stress over not being able to play even 30% of everything I'm interested in during my lifetime.

    1. Wraith

      Wraith

Yeah gaming is excellent right now imo. AAA is just such a small part of what we have to play that I'm not able to get outraged. I've found 5 or 6 new all time favorite games in the past couple years alone.

    2. Sean

      Sean

My favorite thing is that almost every single genre is represented in indies. Real-time strategies, roguelikes, classic turn-based JRPGs, 3D platformers, you name it. Even if the AAA industry ignores all of these games, indies will always be there to pick up the slack and make some fans out there happy no matter what.

    4. Sean

      Sean

Not necessarily, but I won't rely on AAA companies to make me happy.

One of my favorite past times recently is browsing itch.io for weird, random, and cool games that people work on on their spare time. Some of the projects you see on that site are really creative and interesting, and there's merit to be found even in a lot of seemingly ugly and rough-around-the-edges games. It's the secret best gaming storefront if you're interested in limited-budget, off-the-wall creativity that average people like us can come up with.

Besides Nintendo games, I can't really recall the last game I bought that wasn't on sale. It was probably something I bought for the PS3.

Meanwhile Cuphead's pretty much shot up into being one of my favorite games ever despiten ot having gotten far in it. I don't think I talk about that game as much as I should. Hell I'm even kinda kicking myself for not even done any fanart for it.

Chunky unfiltered pixels are the only proper way to experience 90s FPSes

I really wish the HUD mod used the original graphics, though. But without it, the numbers are way too fucking tiny to see

  10. For anyone who wonders why Geno even has a fanbase at all, why don't you look up Super Mario RPG's history sometime and how that game was even made in the first place
  11. Because I'm sick and tired of being told by people who don't care about Geno that Geno is an obscure character from an obscure game (fun fact neither of these claims are true but even if they were true it has no bearing on him being in Smash or not) that either won't make it into Smash or doesn't deserve to be in Smash Speculating about characters isn't fun anymore. There's so much gatekeeping and it truly is one of the most obnoxious, exhausting things to talk about on the internet regarding this series. I'm pretty much completely over Smash hype at this point and I can thank the fanbase for ruining it for me
  12. @Meta77 I deleted your latest post, if you have nothing to add to the conversation then don't post. Don't respond to me, either.
  13. Dark Jedi 2's framerate makes me feel kinda fucking sick while playing it. Wish there was a full 60fps mod for this game but I haven't found anything like that.

  14. The thing about Sonic and his friends is that I mostly just want to actually play as them. If they're cutscene-only, then they might as well not be in the game for me, since I never watch cutscenes on repeat playthroughs anymore. I care more about being able to play as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy again than I do about the series improving its writing and characterization. I have nothing really to say about how Sega can improve the characters in a story context since I don't believe they have the chops for it. Besides, I don't like modern Tails, he's kind of a prick. He was more adorable back in the classic/Adventure/Heroes era
  15. http://cucumber.gigidigi.com/cq/important-announcement/

Cucumber Quest is ending, and the rest of the story won't be finished in comic format. This is so heartbreaking, if understandable considering Gigi's current life commitments.

  16. SW Dark Forces is a game I really appreciate and want to love but it's also one of the most frustrating old-school FPS games I've played due to its puzzle design, long-winded levels, and most bullshit trap placement known to man

    1. Speederino

      Speederino

Yyyyep. Some of the later bosses get fucking brutal, too. I don't know how it's possible to defeat them without cheesing it.

    2. Sean

      Sean

I swear to god those minetraps are IMPOSSIBLE to watch out for. Even when I'm on the look out for them, I still get blindsided and it's always too late for me to react when they get set off. It doesn't help that they look similar to shield pickups at a glance, either. Also, I can't tell you how many times I got trapped by crushing ceilings that I had no idea were even there until it was too late.

But the most offensive thing by far was getting a game over in the oxygen-deprived area in mission 8 where you have to press three switches before your health runs out. It wouldn't be so bad except after you die the game FUCKING RESPAWNS YOU IN THE SAME ROOM. So if you're like me and panicking and don't know what to do you lose all your fucking progress in the level and have to start over.

I've had to look up walkthroughs for every single level since the third or fourth one, and it's not fun at all exhausting my options and feeling lost all the time. Which sucks because I really enjoy the visuals (for its time) and the relatively forgiving difficulty when gunning down enemies compared to Duke Nukem 3D, but the game really pales in comparison to Doom and Duke in terms of overall fun.

    3. Sean

      Sean

LOL it turns out I had to either use a gas mask or turn off a switch in a previous room. It's really unclear whether or not I picked up a key item in this game unlike Doom because there's no visual indication that you have an item unless you pay close attention to every single prompt that appears, which I tend to tune out since they often just say I picked up ammo or health. At least Doom displays all your card keys on the HUD.

Give me a Square Enix vs Capcom game with Neku as a character and a shibuya stage, and that’s all I’d need from TWEWY going forward tbh

    4. Sean

      Sean

I used to want it but the Switch version's scenario indicated that it would absolutely be going in a direction I don't care for at all. Bringing Neku back is about the most creatively bankrupt decision I can think of for a sequel.

  19. https://fortune.com/2019/07/01/microsoft-delete-ebook/

MS is deleting every ebook from their store and removing purchases from customers' libraries. I'd tell MS to go fuck themselves, but the fact that they're issuing refunds means I can't really complain about what they're doing. I still think it's kinda bullshit though, like I'd rather keep my purchases even if I can't buy them again, and stuff like this really does make me paranoid about buying digital without having a means to back stuff up or download cracks to keep them forever. Plus I don't really trust the game industry to issue refunds AT ALL when it comes to shutting down online-only games, since there has been only a small handful of instances where customers were reimbursed.

    1. Mad Convoy

      Mad Convoy

Refunds or no refunds, this is 100% BS.

Like no, I decide when my legally acquired, purchased (as in, not rented like some libraries let you do with ebooks) files should be deleted and/or returned. Not Microsoft, or Apple, or anybody else. That’s just straight up invasive.

    2. Sean

      Sean

yeah my stance is "this isn't as bad as it could have been, but it's a sign of worse things to come in the digital age." I am pretty obsessed with ownership of the media I buy, I don't buy into the "you don't own anything you buy" narrative anymore than I believe that you don't actually own those Harry Potter books you bought at Barnes & Noble. B&N can't knock on my door and physically take away the book I paid for, so it ought to stand to reason that companies can't take away my digital purchases either. The fact that they can, and will, just angers me, and people defending this practice by standing behind the "you don't own your purchases" argument in defense of companies doing this shit is just the irritating cherry on top.

    3. KHCast

      KHCast

Yeah was gonna say, this is one of the reasons I’m not at all trusting companies with the digital only age. This concerns me especially when this kinda shit already happens common in gaming.

  20. Another Western dev has gotten their hands on the Kunio-kun IP (after 2017's River City Ransom: Underground), this time by Shantae/Mighty Switch Force creators WayForward. You'll be playing as the girlfriends of Kunio and Riki, Misako and Ryoko, as they attempt to rescue their boyfriends from the nefarious organization known as "the cops." I haven't played much Kunio-kun aside from the first game on NES and Underground, but I was sold even before the trailer dropped today. Delinquent girls, great graphics, and a theme song by Actual IRL Shantae (or as her friends know her, Cristina Vee). Nice to see some competition to Streets of Rage 4!

  23. End of the day I'm not paying an extra $20 for an upscaled Pokémon game with less features. I can't convince myself to do it, I'm not even the slightest bit tempted to buy SwSh. I own one version of every gen up to this point so I think I'll be satisfied simply replaying old games and checking out the occasional ROM hack from now on to get my fix. It's been a good run, a great one even for me, but ever since XY the series has slowly turned into something I've cared less about and I don't think it's for me anymore.

Judging by what I've read of the save corruption issue, backing up your local save is pointless when it comes to preserving your Pit Stop collectibles because it's all tied to the online component somehow. Those don't seem to be saved locally at all.

  25. Rest in peace Etika.
