What an ominous and badass sounding name.

  3. Battle Network 5DS has so many great battle mechanics in it that it can get pretty overwhelming going straight to this from an earlier game. NaviCust, Double Soul, and the DS version's Navi party system that lets you play as other Navis can all help you feel like you're really overpowered even early in the story. The main downside to 5 is that I'm not into the liberation missions, but normal battles and bosses are some of the most fun in the entire series.

I remember playing the GBA version years ago (back when I was either in high school or early college, I forget) and wasn't a fan of it at all. I couldn't look past how annoying the liberations are I guess, and I was suffering from burnout from previous entries. But playing it on the DS has given me a greater appreciation for it and it's an incredibly polished entry.

  6. The Zero/ZX Legacy Collection is really good and it's absolutely the version of these games that newcomers should pick up, but there's a handful of minor flaws that really bug the hell out of me and hold this back as being the definitive collection: shitty cutscene artwork filtering (even with filters disabled), horrible title screen typefont, and a complete lack of perfect pixel mode for the ZX games. I actually like the Zero DS collection over this. This is a purely subjective preference and I wouldn't recommend anyone hunt down the DS version (not helped by how expensive it is these days), but if I had to pick one copy to keep and go back to over and over, it'd be the old one.

  7. The Zero collection is pretty great so far, with one caveat: There is a filter for cutscene artwork in the Zero games even when filtering for the game is disabled and it's fucking horrible. Patch this shit, Capcom.

Also as a sidenote, the generic text font for title screens is fugly.

    1. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

      >filtered cutscene art

either just stick the original art in there or don't touch it

    2. Sean

      Sean

Yeah I really don't know what they were thinking here. I loathe playing 2D retro games with any filters whatsoever, so way to force this shit on me even when I disable it Capcom. I don't care about the title screen text since it doesn't affect anything but the cutscenes look objectively worse now.

Can't detect any input lag though so the collection is great where it counts. Playing on PS4

    3. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Honestly, if ZX and ZXA can get unfiltered anime cutscenes, there's no reason we can't get the original artwork for the cutscenes into the Zero games, and get to see them in full HD for the first time.

We're not playing to the limits of the original devices anymore, so it could be done...

  8. I'm importing EXE1 Operate Shooting Star on the DS from Japan. Lazy port or not, I just want more Battle Network on my 3/DS.

  9. Not being able to see V2 Navis on the field (and the fact that they become random battles after you defeat them) is the worst thing about BN

@TCB If you like Mega Man X you'd most likely enjoy MMZ. The stories are far beyond the quality you would expect from a Mega Man game, with great twists and emotional nuance, and very subtle character development for Zero that extends across all four games. Zero's playstyle combines both X and his MMX self, and you are encouraged to play levels well and quickly with no time-wasting gimmicks that the later MMX games suffer from. Zero 2 and 3 are some of the best Mega Man games ever made with top-notch level design, music, and side mechanics which help level the playing field such as the cyber elf system (which is improved upon even further in 3 via satellite elves, which are equippable and don't affect your ranking) and unlockable EX skills from bosses similar to Zero's obtained moves in X4 that make the game that much more fun.

Mega Man Zero also has some really good tracks, especially for the GBA.

The arranged mixes are good too:

    6. Sean

      Sean

@TCB Have you played any Mega Man game before? The X and Zero games are much faster-paced than the classic series with dashing and wall-climbing thrown into the mix. I think the MMX series, particularly the earlier games, would be a better start than MMZ since the latter can get much more difficult.

    7. TCB

      TCB

Cant really say that I have. The only MM experience I ever really had was early on in the Battle Network series.

I take these games are out of the question on jumping into then

    8. Sean

      Sean

I recommend checking out X1-5 first so you get an idea of who Zero is, and the MMZ series references MMX's storyline and events fairly often. Classic MM isn't necessary.

  11. Been doing a gearless/no-upgrade run of MM11, just have Blast Man and the castle stages left.

  12. It's weird that Capcom didn't do any DLC for MM11, when 9 and 10 had tons of it. I mean I can appreciate when a game is released as-is and the company decides that it's done with it. But playable Roll/Blues/Bass would have been really fun and helped with replayability I think. Kind of a shame

    1. Sean

      Sean

They also should have just kept the Omega-Xis buster because that shit's cool as fuck :/ I remember when we saw that and people got excited about other Mega Man series getting similar cameos in MM11, what a disappointment.

    5. Jovahexeon Explosive Witch

      Jovahexeon Explosive Witch

Wow. Sucks that they took it out. Oy vey. Two steps forward. One step back.

  13. I've been replaying MM11 and it's still pretty fun. My major complaint is that levels go on for too long, I wish it had the checkpoint system of MM8/X4 where getting a game over didn't send you back all the way to the beginning. I also hate this game's fetish for placing insta-death hazards near the end of the level (so dying sends you back like 10 screens away)

Also, having items not respawn in levels is bullshit. You can't grind for lives and E-tanks in levels, so anyone wanting to play the game like a classic MM title by ignoring the shop is screwed over.

    1. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

You can do it, but it's a major pain. You have to be really good at the game to not use the shop.

    2. Sean

      Sean

I really like the double gear system; I use it a lot. But I can't imagine how some of this game can be completed without it. I'm sure it's possible but it seems like it'd make it harder than any of the NES Mega Man games after 2 if you tried to. Stuff like Torch Man's firewalls need to fuck off into the ether, and I'm not a fan of the bosses having pinch phases that are extremely hard to react to during your first encounter with them.

    3. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

It's definitely doable. I'm surprised so many people have had issues with Torch Man's stage, as I found it easy to skip past without the Speed Gear. And many of the bosses can be defeated without the gears, you just need to get your timing down (which is actually quite lenient, you just need to not buckle under the stress).

For first encounters, though? I definitely agree that those sections can be a pain in the ass. And I guess that's what the Speed Gear is for.

    4. Sean

      Sean

I'm strongly considering doing a gearless (and maybe upgrade-less) run after this, but I suck at classic, and the marathon-length level design is so daunting at times even when buying all the upgrades I can and using gears.

    5. Ryannumber1Scarer

      Ryannumber1Scarer

Completely off topic, but speaking of bad marathon design - Dr. Light's challenge from MM11 can fuck right off as well.

    6. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Oh fuck that challenge. It's a new level of horseshit there.

  19. Zero 3 is the best Mega Man game ever made. I don't accept constructive criticism

    1. Legendary Emerald

      Legendary Emerald

You're not wrong, but I still slightly prefer Z2. I like the chain-rod more than the recoil rod, the soundtrack in Z2 is better, Elpizo is great, and there's no bad water stage unlike Z3 and Z4.

Having said all that, Zero 3 doesn't make you have to level up multiple times just to swing your sword three times in a row, so yeah, it's basically the automatic winner.

    2. Sean

      Sean

Zero 2 is fantastic as well, just a little rough around the edges like with the weapon leveling system, but it has great bosses and I really liked the unlockable forms even if getting them was a pain, doubly so if you were going for all A/S-ranks. It took me two playthroughs just to get them all and the EX-skills in one file.

Zero 3 was the first time I really messed with the cyber elves since the game doesn't punish you for using satellite elves, which was always my biggest nitpick with 1 and 2. 'Twas really fun mixing and matching them throughout my last playthrough.

  20. Some Battle Network games have better stories than Mega Man X does lol

    1. Soniman

      Soniman

I always preferred classic over X because it knew what it wanted to be and never tried to be anything more than that. The simple but more timeless writing and characterization (Mm7/8 aside) also helps. Never played a single BN game but from what little I gleaned the stories seem way tighter With a clear goal in mind for each game and not just making BS up and retconning shit.

I'd say the one thing X have over classic for me is the evolved gameplay but the quality is all over the place I can only really say that for less than half the games 😕

    2. Sean

      Sean

Yeah. I really wish I loved MMX as much as most people do. But the quality of the writing and actual games places it squarely on the bottom of my list of favorite MM series. I'll still take an X9 if Capcom can successfully condense what was good about X1, 2, and 4, and I have hopes that they can do it if MM11 (as imperfect as it was) is any indication of what's to come.

It's not like Mega Man can't do dark stories well, either. Zero 2-4 have some of the best stories and character development the franchise has ever seen, and even MM11 had some nuggets of potential between Dr. Light and Wily's relationship. And I've heard nothing but great things about Star Force 3 even though I've yet to play it. But when a Mega Man game is bad, it gets really bad. Honestly, I think some MM games are worse than the worst Sonic games, and no Sonic story has as dire storytelling as the later X games.

    3. Soniman

      Soniman

Sonic at least has the benefit of starting fresh each game instead of continuing bad story threads as they deteriorate into nonsense which is what happened with the X, the plot lines lines with Sigma and Zero specifically.

I think Infaune realized that And wanted to tell the zero focused narrative he obviously wanted to tell with MMZ after ruining the X plot with that crap trying to make it happen the first time lol

    4. Kuzu

      Kuzu

All of the bad story shit in X makes a lot more sense when you realize that Inafune wanted Zero to be the main character, but Capcom mandated they create a Mega Man since Zero looked too different from Classic.

    5. Sean

      Sean

I don't think that has much, if any correlation. Inafune wasn't involved in the later X games (and even the first X game to feature Zero as ostensibly the main character, X4, had terrible writing), so you can't say he was intentionally jeopardizing the series over a grudge, and Capcom vetoed Inafune's idea that X should be the main villain of MMZ, and yet most people can agree that the final result - MMZ1's villain being a copy of X without committing character assassination on the original - is better for it.

    6. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

MMX just thrives off cool factor alone. Every other series has something going for it.

Didn't belong to any of the staff, and obviously wasn't one of the residents either. It had a name written on the back, so we asked all visitors over the next month if they knew anything about it. Nobody did so... I got a new copy of the game.
