  1. Powerpuff Girls 2016 is probably actually one of the worst pieces of serial animation to ever air on television. With only minor hyperbole.

Frankly, this animation has about ten times more effort put into it than the actual game. It's almost as if they actually cared! (hah!)

  5. I would say I actually enjoy most of the Sonic stages in 06. Not so much Shadow or Silver, but definitely Sonic. Flame Core is shit though and Wave Ocean's automated nature and boring design makes me wish I was playing Emerald Coast.

  7. Even if Star Fox Zero underperforms I doubt that it would be the end of the franchise.

Yeah I think Star Fox Zero is basically the death knell. Way to go out with a whimper.

  8. It's funny. With a game like Star Fox Zero, I'd usually be one of the more optimistic folks trying to defend it until the reviews come out inevitably slamming it. This time, I'm probably the biggest duck in the "IT'S GOING TO SUCK" puddle.

Seriously, though, the new trailer really only serves to highlight just how lazy the game looks. It's almost like the Star Fox equivalent to Sonic 4: soulless nostalgia pandering with nothing of actual value to offer. They're copying the dialogue almost verbatim from Star Fox 64. "HEY, GENIUS, I'M ON YOUR SIDE." Like....seriously? You're not even going to try to make a new experience out of this? This isn't fanservice, it's pandering. It's using nostalgia as an excuse to opt out of making something actually new and fresh. Heck, it can hardly even be called nostalgia. There's no actual sentimentality to it; it's just a vapid coat of paint. "LOOK THE OLD GAME DID THIS DON'T YOU REMEMBER THE OLD GAME THE OLD GAME SURE WAS GOOD RIGHT IT'S ALMOST LIKE YOU'RE PLAYING THE OLD GAME I BET YOU WISH YOU WERE PLAYING THE OLD GAME RIGHT LOL" It didn't work for Twilight Princess, it most certainly didn't work for Sonic 4, and it doesn't look like it's going to work for Star Fox Zero.

And to wrap it all in this "franchise history" retrospective, marketing this as the big revival we've all been waiting for, pretending that the history of the Star Fox series past 64 is even something worth celebrating rather than confirmation that Nintendo legitimately never cared enough to salvage it. Star Fox Zero is basically digging the series up from its grave only to shit on it and then bury it again. Way to disrespect your fans. Between this game, Color Splash, and Federation Force, either the Nintendo that actually cared is long dead or they're all working on Zelda U.

      Nintendo usually isn't this...LAZY.

Then again, considering the kinds of games they're releasing this year, maybe it's to be expected.

  16. Honestly, I'm REALLY glad that Zootopia is getting such astronomical acclaim and success. It deserves it, for one, but for another, it could really pave the way for more anthropomorphic media that might follow in its footsteps. I just really hope that it doesn't go the way of Frozen in terms of receiving distaste due to long-term overexposure.

Those are all fair points. I wasn't saying you should look at the film differently, I was more so making a general statement that it's best not to be too firm in one's expectations. I fully agree that cultural context is important to judging a work, and that it's impossible to be objective - that in particular is rather important to me, honestly. I will also admit that I still tend to be rather defensive when something I appreciate is widely criticized, even if it's not necessarily a favorite, comes under fire, so I apologize if I came off as though I expected you to change your mind. It would be assumptive of me to say that hype backlash is the only reason for the adult audience's ambivalence towards Frozen. I suppose that I simply can't help but suspect that the dislike would be more muted if not for the hype and exposure.

Also, when I'm speaking of expectations, I'm speaking specifically of expectations relating to quality, in case that clears anything up.

      @Nepenthe

I understand if you find the movie average on its own merits. However, I DO think that it's important to separate a work from the hype surrounding it. Speaking from experience, going into something with a fixed expectation of it being one of the best of its kind can ruin something you might otherwise appreciate a great deal more.

It's honestly one of the reasons why I want to be careful when I'm talking about something that I really love. I don't want to set newcomers up for disappointment by putting false expectations in their heads.

      Holy crap, you guys.

The overall distaste for Frozen honestly perplexes me. I can't help but feel like it would be generally looked upon as a good or at least decent film if not for the ludicrous overexposure. Aside from the children that eat up the merchandise, the opinions I see on Frozen are predominately negative. Even people who at one point said they liked the movie have revised their opinion.

It's the James Cameron Titanic Principle - something gets hugely popular, people love it for a while, its popularity remains consistent and now it's freaking everywhere, people get sick of hearing about it, a vocal minority calls it overrated, that vocal minority begins to grow into an equally vocal majority, and then it's still labelled "overhyped" and "overrated" despite the fact that it is by definition neither of those things because almost no one likes it anymore. See Sonic Adventure 2 for another example.

Personally, I watched Frozen about a year after it came out, after some of the hype had cooled off, and I really enjoyed it. It's not necessarily an amazing movie, but for what it is, it's a fun ride. As long as you don't go in expecting a masterpiece, I think you'll appreciate it.

And Let It Go is a good song so screw all of you >:C

  22. See, I'm honestly still confused about the hate for Frozen. Like, be honest, do you think that people would feel more fondly for it if it weren't so...overexposed?

I mean, if you think about it, it's almost like the one modern-day Disney move that people won't defend is the most popular and successful one.
