LoseR got a reaction from Splash the Otter in How should Sonic games be structured?
I think the level-to-level progression or hub-maps (like in Colors or Rush) are fine, but there's always been something really special about the hub worlds in Adventure, and I'd like for them to return to that.
Adventure's hub worlds are nice and big and pretty dang open, but they still feel alive and meaningful. They're really relaxing, but not too relaxing. Plus the hub worlds are the only place in the game where the player has FULL CONTROL of the characters and isn't tied down by level design or gimmicks. When I say full control I don't mean like how Unleashed limited Sonic's actions, I mean the areas themselves are not limiting to Sonic's abilities, because there's nothing the player needs to do immediately. Players are free to roam and explore all they want, even if there isn't a whole lot to see, and can progress when they want to. I always really liked this approach.
Though I do have some complaints with the Adventure hub worlds. For one, the NPCs scattered around are for the most part pretty bland. They don't serve any real purpose and it would be nice if they did. Though they do like to give hints to characters about where to go next, which is nice. (Note: I haven't actually played Unleashed so I don't know much about how NPCs world there.) I don't really know if I want alternate missions like in Unleashed or anything, I guess I'd just like to see some more flair to the writing. Also personally I've always preferred the 90s-anime looking NPCs in Adventure to the Pixar-esque NPCs which always felt really out of place to me.
The second complaint I have with Adventure is that it takes a little too long to get between in some cases. Traveling to and finding the next stage is fun the first time you do it, but it would be nice if you could quickly access a stage you've already been to without having to leave the story mode. For instance, going from Red Mountain to Twinkle Park takes quite a bit of time since you have to go from one hub world to another. So I'm not really sure if I'd want to see multiple hub worlds. I think there are two ways this issue could be solved. Either implement some form of fast-travel to locations we've already been to, or design the hub worlds cohesively so they fit together as one. Perhaps if hub world(s) return they could be more circular or have multiple ways to get from point A to B.
Also I thought it would be nice if the hub worlds had more collectables. In Adventure you had emblems, upgrades, chao and chao gardens, and some rings that could be found, but it wasn't much. It'd be nice if we had more things to find and collect. These could be things that to 100% completion like emblems or something or they could be items like shields or rings that players could take to the next level. Oh and considering chao gardens, it would be nice if we had more "secret" locations in the hub worlds. I assume collectables would be put into many of these secret locations.
Long story short, hub worlds bby pl0x. And do something fun with them, but don't make them too wacky.

    Playable Amy:
She's the last "good guy" character from the classic games not present, and I think Amy needs more good, non-damsel representation. As for how she'd play, I imagine that she's basically Sonic 3 Sonic gameplay, just with the hammer replacing the insta-shield. She'd be able to use the elemental shields in some way too. That brings me to my next point...
Elemental shield abilities for all characters:
I always thought it was sucky how only Sonic gets to use shield abilities. Sure, maybe the abilities would distract from a characters flight abilities, but they don't have to. Another button could be used to activate shield abilities so that the jump button can be used for standard character abilities.
    ---
Oh btw, the rate at which we get a "Mania 2" would be dictated less by Sega and more by Christian Whitehead's team. If they want to work on another classic-styled game then Sega would probably greenlight it, but if they don't I doubt Sega would want to risk using another developer. I'm sure if Mania is successful Sega will probably ask Christian Whitehead and friends if to make another game, but it's not like they're under an extended contract as far as I'm aware.

I'll agree that it's a bit too early to start talk about what to do with a sequel, but honestly only five things come to mind at worst, and only three of them really boil down to the actual game.
    To the dev team:
    a. Mostly (if not entirely) new content. If there's going to be returning levels, keep them to a short minimum and have them as surprises hidden in the game. The series has been playing the nostalgia card way too much in recent years.
    b. Go for a more modern presentation, a la Donkey Kong Country Returns or Rayman Origins. Leave Mania's retraux look to be a unique element to that game, and go either with modern-era sprites or the 2.5D route. In particular, I'd love to see a game look like the CD animated scenes, the recent Sonic 2 concept art, the OVA, or Tyson Heese's Mega Drive / Mania pre-order trailer--just something that's all about presenting the original artstyle with today's graphics/visuals.
    c. This is a much more personal request, so it's really not important, but I'd like see the next game go with a different/new title, rather than be billed as a direct sequel to Mania.
    To Sega:
    d. Retail release. I'd pretty much pay nearly any amount for a physical copy of a new Genesis Sonic game.
    e. Let the developers breathe and work on other projects, take notes from Nintendo's development schedule (three-five years between each game). In the meantime, let Mania's quality speak for itself not just in initial sales, but in shelf life in the following years.
Other than that....have at it. Cut loose and surprise me. The developers have my sword shield axe keyboard enthusiastic trust and support.

I hope the removal doesn't mean this isn't going to be a thing. I only played a tiny bit of Sonic Runners due to it closing relatively soon after I got my first smartphone, and not exactly feeling encouraged to play it more because of it starting up slowly and many of the things I heard about it, but the core gameplay seemed really solid, it had a fun variety of characters, and the aesthetics had a lot of merit, so I think it would be a shame if the concept was never revisited.

I'll say this though. Even if it is basically Generations 2, who cares?? The formula works and it's great. Did people criticize Sonic 2 and 3&K because it had the same formula as 1?? No, because the formula works. Going by this logic, why not criticize Mania for being a copy and paste of the first 3 games??

Want these Sonics. Not the happy-go Sonics from Generations and Lost World.
I mean, for what we've seen so far, it looks like at least Classic is gonna be again "cute and cuddle" instead of:

    This cocky badass (yet cute).

Classic Sonic in Gens was cool, yeah, but he's just so random... Even during the final boss, when both Eggmen reveal themselves, he just...

I don't know man, I kinda think Sonic Team will pull this again...

How much do I have to pay to have Sonic CD/OVA personality in this (and Unleashed personality back)? D:

It really doesn't look any more 'dark' than Unleashed did. Eggman blew up the damn Earth and the game still had all the levity people expect out of most Sonic games. As did Sonic Adventure 1 & 2; half the time they feel like 80's action thrillers, and considering Sonic's "cool in the face of danger" attitude that's been established since his inception, that seemed like the next logical step.
Nowhere in Project 2017's trailer did we see anyone die, nor did Sonic say a childish swear or shoot a gun while mid-2000s industrial rock played in the background. It was just giant mechs destroying a city, and Sonic doing what he always does.
You guys have gotta stop being so paranoid. Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic '06 happened ten years ago. Sonic Team and Sega's marketing department are fully aware of the PR disaster it would be if they dived headfirst into that territory again. The only thing that any of us should be concerned about is how the game plays.

    Why? Because of him.

Now... I can picture a 'good game' on the level of Sonic 06 with Modern Sonic.
I can even picture a 'good game' on the level of Shadow the hedgehog with Modern Sonic.
    Even Sonic Adventure...

Can anyone... hand on heart... picture a game with Classic Sonic being this 'serious' 'dark' toned game that some people want... without thinking one or both of the following.
    * This is stupid.
    * This is so out of place.
Even if the 2017 trailer he's so out of place you can't help but default to one of those.
Lets even go crazy and pretend the theory that Boom Sonic is in this game is true, can you honestly picture Boom Sonic working in this kind of game without defaulting to one of those two reactions?
The only way it works if it's on the same tone as Generations or Unleashed.
Also let this be your reminder... Classic Sonic is in this game.
    Yes, Classic Sonic.

I still think the comparisons of the tone of this trailer to 2006/Shadow are completely nuts but oh well.  At the very most this is comparable to 2006's intro once Sonic shows up, INCLUDING an appreciation for the moment where Sonic comically taps a robot off with his foot, lightening the mood.

Like, I know people are scrabbling for examples of darkness in the classic games but nobody really says Sonic Adventure 1 was too dark and that game - canonically - had a echidnas beating up defenseless chao, an implied masscare of an entire tribe, and an entire city being levelled for the finale (though no-one was hurt because family game etc).
I am very much getting vibes of that lattermost situation from this trailer.  I think without further evidence it is VERY overdramatic to assume the franchise is going back to gun shootin', mouth swearin', princess kissin' territory here just because Eggman made a city go on fire.

Okay ignore the 25th Anniversary Sonic banner and pretend you didn't watch the trailer. At first glance, what game franchise do you think this would be an advert for? I bet it would take a while until you got to Sonic the Hedgehog. Considering this franchise's history of overly edgy games, I'd say people have very good reason to be anxious about the tone of this game. Personally, I don't think Sonic Team would be so stupid as to take it back to '06/Shadow/SA2 levels of try-hard edge, especially considering Iizuka's comments about not wanting Sonic to be photorealistic ever again.

Honestly I don't care too much about the tone.
Okay sure the city is on fire and there's giant scary Eggman mechs walking around, but there's also this.

    Followed by this.

And even looking at the overall city, it's not all grim and dark looking like let's say Westopolis or Crisis city were. It still looks pretty colorful even if it's all destroyed and on fire.
So while I am expecting a darker tone then previous Sonic games, I'm not expecting them to go all edgy & serious like Shadow and 06 did. probably more along the tone of the Adventure duology where it's a bit darker and the stakes are much higher then the norm but never quite going there.

LoseR reacted to JezMM in Sonic Forces | PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC "The Next Generations"
I find Crisis City comparisons kind of unfair because it completely ignores the unique designs and colours on show in the architecture of this new city, which are far more interesting than the drab, generic rectangular skyscrapers all over the place in Crisis City.  Overall I find this aesthetic no more grim in style than Eggmanland in Unleashed.
The only thing I disliked in the trailer was the generic dramatic orchestral music, which wasn't even cool dramatic orchestral music with techno or rock elements like a superhero movie soundtrack, it was just... there and had no oomph to it whatsoever.  I really hope that was outsourced and not at all representative of the music in the game, even for cut-scenes.
Bad first impression?  Maybe, I do think the teaser was misguided, almost as if they were trying as hard as possible to be a total contrast to Mania to keep interest level between the two titles.  But that was just destined not to happen no matter how you swung it, I guess.
To be honest though, if this location is the first level of the game and we start out dramatic... I can dig it.  Shadow the Hedgehog kinda did the same thing but that game's city designs were generic america-ville like Crisis City.  This overall seems unique and I'd take it any day over "Green Hill... again" which even Mania couldn't get away with not doing by it's nature (though not to downplay what a goddamn gorgeous a job they did of it).

I can think of some conservative values that make more sense to me than their liberal counterparts, namely not tying budgets of public services to a government that will refuse to pay for it (Hi Sam Brownback, hows the fallout from your shitty policies on public education going for you?)
They only really have value on the basis our dysfunctional government can't be trusted with public services though, the second they prove they can I don't see how any conservative value would survive. Which is probably why conservative politicians like fucking over the public services they do control.

LoseR reacted to Ryannumber1Santa in Would you play a Mario anniversary game in the mold of Sonic Generations?
I'm not really sure if I would. One of the biggest reasons why Generations worked so well for me personally was because a lot of the Sonic levels are so recognizable and stand out when compared to each other. Levels like Speed Highway or Planet Wisp all have their own unique feeling, and vibe created through their unique atmospheres, soundtracks, and visuals. They're all named, and pretty well defined, even if the levels might share the same location. Speed Highway and City Escape for example can be considered the same idea, but their locations and designs are really different and still have different atmospheres. Sonic was honestly one of the very few franchises I felt that could really work because a lot of the levels are pretty memorable and unique.
Frankly, Mario really doesn't have that in most of his games. Fair enough, 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy maybe since they all tried to break the pre-established mold of Grass, Desert, Beach/Underwater, and so on. But when a lot of the other games are just "World 1-1" or just Chocolate Island 3, then I honestly don't see it working nearly as well. Mario still gets shit for having only the same world order and locations every single time, and the one time Sonic tried that, it also got shit thrown at it with Lost World. I'm not trying to give Mario shit, because he does have some iconic levels and unique ideas, like Tiny-Huge Island. or Bob-omb Battlefield, but I don't think he would have nearly enough for an full game that's going back through his entire past, and would require levels from every single main game.
