  1. I still firmly believe that Pontaff have no real touch for writing Sonic, both it's characters and it's tonal style.

Well, Verte, I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this front, because I just don't agree at all with this assessment.

Also, hey, I'm back from the hospital and the cancer hasn't taken me down!

Their writing is pretty much on-par with some of the worst children's cartoons I've seen.  I'm all for some character interaction if it's done well, but I'd honestly rather the characters not talk at all than hear more Pontaff dialogue.

@Komodin No issues there ;) It's just that when I think of Sonic game writing, unfunny jokes, characters standing around and talking about silly shit instead of doing anything, drama that is abrupt and isn't worked up to and arbitrary character derailment isn't something I'm used to or accept.

I think they COULD do something decent, but SEGA/Sonic Team don't really give them much to work with, or really seem to care what they do with what they're given. If a story editor was in charge of overseeing this stuff, or Sonic Team simply wasn't afraid of trying something bigger than what we've been getting and balancing the tone, I think it'd be a different story and their localization work (or their original scripting of Lost World) would not be nearly as bad.

In the end, I wouldn't be bothered if they were let go, but I can't say things would be much different with another writer unless bigger changes were put in place.

i still don't know how "standing around and talking" became a complaint about P&G specifically. that's what most cutscenes in most Sonic games are.

@Diogenes Probably because it feels like there's even more of it than before, and the addition of excessive bad jokes and even more questionable characterization make the standing around and talking stick out even worse.

The difference is that when characters stood around and talked in pre-2010 games, the blabber was characteristic of the involved characters and/or served the plot. That is acceptable because it's storytelling and character elaboration.

Post-2010 cutscenes that involve standing around and blabbering don't accomplish either the majority of the time, hence it is both annoying and boring. Plot development gets shunted for asinine dialogue that doesn't add anything of value to the narrative or the characters.

That's one of Pontc's and Graff's many foibles regarding Sonic writing.

Sorry Verte, but as usual with this subject, I'll have to agree to disagree as well. I won't say that I think they're the greatest writers Sonic's ever had, but because I don't care too much for most if not all of the previous writers that much either, including Maekawa, it's pretty much an equal footing sort of thing if you get my drift. Overall, I can understand people's problems with them, and there are even some that I can agree with, but I do think that some of the heavy backlash they can get is a little much.

(I just noticed I said "too much" and "that much" in the same sentence, gah.)

@Vertekins Off-topic, but your interests list is FREAKING HUGE!

I think Sonic stories are a little too silly nowadays, but Lost World did try to do something a little more dramatic (though it failed)

Come to think of it, me not having a particular all time favourite Sonic writer might be one of the reasons for why I just don't feel as strongly about this topic as other fans do.

That's not to say that a great writer showing up in the future wouldn't be accepted with open arms, but you get my drift, it isn't as super-urgent of a bullet point for me compared to others.

Even if Sonic is questionable at best and characters like Knuckles are atrocious, they can still write a decent Eggman at least.

@Dr. Crusher I don't even know who the majority of the writers even are yet Pontaff's writing just rubs me the wrong way. It's disappointing too, since like I've said before, Pontac at least is CAPABLE of writing pretty well (he wrote a decent episode of the 2015 Thunderbirds reboot "Thunderbirds Are Go!"), but for some reason he just seems to turn on the dumbass button the minute he starts writing for Sonic.
