  1. Taking a break from here to consider whether or not I want to stay. Lately perceived a change around here that I don't like.

      The Tenth Doctor

Sorry to hear that Verte. Hope you're okay.

With how things have been going for you, I don't blame you for wanting a break from here. Even though I'll miss you, I only hope the best for you.

    4. Vertekins

@DarkLight I have been feeling huge frustrations with things on here and in RL that put me into precarious mind states. To the point that avoiding the things thatcause it i the only thing optimal for my moods. Flunctuating health, having to come to terms with my diagnosis and being immensely annoyed with what this place is turning into even though I like it so much has just made me throw my hands into the air, say "fuck it" and go on hiatus. What compounds it is my frustration with the Sonic series.

I feel more at home on Tumblr than I do here. That's saying something given I've been here nearly 11 years but on Tumblr just over 3.

      Get well soon

  2. Looking at an official model comparison between Sonic and Shadow and for some odd reason I'm really quite amused by the fact that Sonic is noticeably fatter than Shadow.

    1. DarkLight

It's the chill dogs, man. They add pounds. Though given how fast Sonic can run, he'd easily burn the carbs.

Got a link? I'd like to see this. :P

Someone needs to go on a diet... :D

  3. Lost World Wii U is mediocre through and through. I can't think of anything that is truly special about it. The game design is filled with potential that is never even remotely lived up to. Parkour is an intriguing gimmick that is never exploited for truly multifaceted level design. The Wisps are the epitome of tacked-on and add nothing of real value to the gameplay. Level design is seriously lacking and a chore to play through with the controls being as finicky as they are. The soundtrack, whilst having a few gems like "Sea Bottom Segue", "Sugar Lane" and the final boss theme, is pretty forgettable for the most part. Most Sonic OST's tend to be very earwormy and memorable. SLW's soundtrack rarely exhibits that quality. The visuals might be vivid and the game may run as smooth as a baby's backside at 60FPS but the backgrounds are seriously lacking in detail and the lighting is...just nothing special compared to what the Hedgehog Engine accomplished. Controls are just....wut. Having a trigger button for running is an asinine decision and the feeling of momentum is completely off. Motion controls for Wisps before the patch made them extremely annoying and led to deaths to the point that I'd avoid Wisp's during my first blind playthrough. Parkour is hard to get to grips with due t finicky controls. This game really needed a tutorial yet never gave it. The writing again has huge issues. Tails is mangled and comes-off as little more than a self-righteous little punk who thinks he's right about everything and is treated as if he's due something, the attempt at a message is undermined through plain bad writing, the Deadly Six are as dull as dishwater and don't get a proper send-off and Amy and Knuckles need not have appeared at all for all the influence they have.
  4. Whether or not Sonic himself gets "Dramatic" or "proper" development is irrelevant to his worthiness as and entitlement to the role of being the comic's main protagonist - He's due it as the franchise's lead character. Not Sally. Do away with Sonic or shunt him aside and elevate Sally to main protagonist role as well as rename the comic after her is extremely disingenuous and would no doubt result in the comic going belly-up because very few people care about or would be attracted to the comic if it didn't have Sonic's name on the front and/or in the lead role. The fact is, Freedom Fighters and Archie's original characters don't attract most people to the comic. Sonic does. As well as the Sonic name - The comic is nowhere near strong enough on it's own merits to continue existing without them because if you gut those out, the comic has very little to nothing going for it in terms of attractiveness except to a small minority of the readership.
  5. I was in a decent position to get Sceptilite in Shuffle yesterday was in the 9000 rank range (You have to be in the top 12000 in Europe to get it). Signed in to see if I've won...and I ranked in the 17000's getting two Attack Power Up's D:

  6. The Precure series can have uch beautiful BGM. Like this song from DokiDoki! -

  7. I'm sorry. But try as I might, I can't see one good thing about Sonic X-Treme. It just looks awful through and through and it's ideas sound shit.

    1. Forte-Metallix

And yet they tried to implement it into Sonic Lost World, just like how they eventually used the concept of Sonic having a human love interest.

Some ideas are best left buried in the past.

    2. Celestia

Didn't Sonic Team deny that X-Treme had any influence on LW? I was under the impression it was only SEGA of America PR people who went "sure, why not" when asked about it.

    3. Dejimon11

I'm sorry but if they flat out said that X-Stream had no influence in lost world just at all they're lying. Also adds more fuel to the Mario Galaxy argument.

  8. It's been 13 years to the day that Sonic X first aired in Japan. Personally, whilst the show had big problems, it still has some awesome bits.

    1. Forte-Metallix

Sure: The Chaotix, the cruise episode, that bit in the Japanese version where Knuckles follows Eggman's robots into an erotic dance club. Even X has had its moments!

    2. Strickerx5

      3rd best Sonic show honestly.

    3. JezMM

I still get overwhelmed with nostalgia by certain episodes, namely 1 and 52.  I didn't care for all the filler, and obviously the english version was naff and a half, but I still overall would say I love the show for the rest, even if it didn't reach it's full potential (your tumblr post about how Helen should've been the human star has changed how I look at the series forever lol).

    4. DiamondX

Knuckles follows Eggman's robots into an erotic dance club.

    5. JezMM

@Diamond Exactly as it sounds.  It's only a 20 second comedic scene, but of course, was cut entirely in the dub

    6. DiamondX

do you have a link to the scene?

It's a pretty typical joke, Japan isn't quite so coddling when it comes to depiction of sex in media aimed at all ages.

    11. Azul

I wish America wasn't so anal when it came to to these kinds of things.

  9. Marina Madness during the morning phase in Chaotix is probably the most soothing Sonic game stage of all time to play through.

No joke, my first thought upon seeing that photo was "Haha, a blue wall, how fitting."

Yeah, I know how annoying shelves can be. Back when I moved some things in my room last year, the shelf took like 30 minutes to get straight.

  11. Phew...moving house is bloody tiring.

@Detective Reptiles I know, I was just really caught off guard. It's pretty much been a regular day for me, then suddenly I find out Mikyeong did...this, and just...

  12. Speaking of the Tornado and it's incarnations in X, you gotta wonder what the point as of giving it a mech fighter-like mode in one of the Adventure eps during the fight against the Egg Carrier, go to the effort of designing it....then never use it again at any point in the series afterwards.

    1. Sean

The cyclone mode of the X-Tornado was also huge. Seriously, it would have been easier for Tails to just walk to places rather than use it.

    2. Blacklightning

I think he used it again during the SA2 era fight with Eggman? In hindsight it kinda made the whole thing an embarrasment because ol' Eggy was in his hovercraft rather than a mech. It was like pitting a tank against a guy with a sledgehammer.

  13. Well SatSR depicted Sonic living in what appears to be a house though personally, I like to think it's the upper level of Tails' Workshop in the Mystic Ruins; See? There's a chimney for presumably the fireplace shown in SatSR's first cutscene and a platform on top of the domed roof where I presume they use the telescope that is also shown in SatSR's intro.
  14. Moving house but wondering what the best way is to pack away figures...

    1. Vertekins

Nendoroid Sonic is going back into his box so no issue with him but I have tons of other figs that I want to move without ruining them.

    2. Zaysho

Try to get some newsprint/packing paper and wrap them individually. Then see if you can pack a few in some boxes.

  15. Hnnnng.... Storybook Sonic is still so lovable and endearing.

      Rey Skywalker-Ren

      I adore Secret Rings Sonic

    2. Vertekins

@Mikyeong I do too! He's a right little tease and can be a dick sometimes especially towards Sinbad and definitely Erazor in the last cutscene but on the other hand he's so selfless and friendly not to mention sympathetic. If SatBK!Sonic gets across the character's soul, SatSR!Sonic exemplifies the character's heart.

    3. DarkLight

He is a precious, precious cinnamon bun.

    4. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

Even if I don't care for Sonic overall as a character, I suppose I can agree with those being the best interpretations in regards to how Sonic's is defined.

      *Sonic is defined, bah.

    5. Ellipsis-Ultima

Black Knight sonic showed determination that time and I liked that.

  16. What gets me about the writing of the games as of the past 6 years is how fucking boring it is. What I mean is that how many times do characters actually do anything interesting in cutscenes? Take Generations for example - Watch it's 13 cutscenes. Now I bet you can count on only one hand how many cutscenes have characters do much more than stand around and blabber about inane shit. For a series about vivid characters, one of which is known in particular for being boisterous, active and, oh I don't know, can move at the speed of sound, this is beyond ridiculous and does not play to the series' sense of energy.

    1. FriendBot
    2. Diogenes

when was it ever not like that

    3. Vertekins

@Diogenes Unleashed's intro for a start. Teeming with action and awesomeness. SA2's first Hero Side story cutcene, hell, the first cutcene for the Dark side story as well. First one had Sonic flip the bird at both GUN and gravity, second had Eggman blast his way into GUN's maximum security prison. Even the Storybook series' 2D cutcenes with minimalist animation had more action.

    4. Diogenes

and the other 99% of those games is characters standing around and talking at each other

    5. FriendBot

Sonic gave the middle finger in SA2?

I remember something like that in the OVA but not in SA2.

Oh and Lost World had an action scene, where everything goes to shit.

    6. Vertekins

@True Detective Soni It's a way of stating that he was in total control of the situation.

I'm not saying that every cutscene is like it, just that it is extremely over-prevalent. Sonic characters are at their best when actually doing stuff and talking like themselves, not being idle the majority of the time and talking like the flanderized idiots Pontaff's have turned them into.

    7. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

I honestly don't remember that many scenes that were super action-y. They may have appeared a little more than they do these days, but with the way people go on about them, you'd think every cutscene was action-packed.

    8. Diogenes

you mean like they basically always were

  17. Even though '06's writing is mostly awful, I'll always give it Shadow's portrayal as well as Rouge's. They were kickass.

    1. AlphaRuby

      Not sure about Rouge's TBH

    2. DarkLight

Ironic that the one character with a good portrayal is the one who mostly contends with the shit villain.

    3. FriendBot

That one moment with Rouge was nice but she never really stood out to me that much in the game. Shadow, Amy and Silver were more interesting characters because they get shit done, they have a goal.

  18. Even though it appeared in a very shitty game, I've got to admit that the Egg Wyvern is one awesome looking machine.

    1. Gregzilla

I like it overall but its face area is kinda goofy

the Egg Carrier looks kickass in the background of the fight though, really cool sense of scale

    2. The Deleter

      The Deleter

It reminds me of a Zoid bird I once had

All the animal mechs in the game look like Zoids, now that I think about it

  19. Today is not my day. I can't find my hairbrush anwhere, my prescription for multiple medications isn't ready until tomorrow meaning I'll have to go without tonight and my EDS is playing me up something wicked. Not in a good mood whatsoever.

    1. Kiah

      I'm sorry :(

That really sucks that you are in pain and don't even have your medication to help you out with that. That's just awful. I hope you can get through the day alright amid everything as things will hopefully improve for you come tomorrow.

    2. Vertekins

@Kiah It's my fault really for not going to order the repeat prescription in time so I'd get my tablets before I ran out. Now I know not to delay in dong it.

    3. Kiah

Perhaps but it still sucks having to wait for something that you absolutely need. The next day isn't too bad to wait though.

    4. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

Damn... that's a shame to hear.

Please take the rest of today easy in that case, and perhaps you should try to get an earlier sleep tonight as well. (Which I realise is easier said than done due to the pain, but I think it's the best option you have.)

    5. SonicWind

Wow, today is relentless for you. I hope things improve.

  20. In an odd way, it sort of...alienating in a very tiny way when you're the only red name in the online member list XD

      Jovahexeon Jax Joranvexeon

Say, I've been meaning ask, what sort of SSMB staff member were you before you retired?

    2. Speeps

      Knock Knock it's Knuckles Theme

    3. Vertekins

@Jovahexeon Joranvexeon  I wasn't an SSMB staff member. I was a TSS staffer and the first female one in the site's history.

    4. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

Well at least it's an easy way of knowing if you're online. Name sticks out like a sore thumb. :P

      Jovahexeon Jax Joranvexeon

@Vertekins Ah, so your name used to have the blue highlight; coolio! Also, congrats on obtaining such a position. I aim for a position like that in the future.

    6. Vertekins

@Jovahexeon Joranvexeon Funnily enough, it was onl the urging of others that compelled me to apply for it as Dread had offered 3 positions for TSS Staff years ago. I applied at others recommendations, submitted a report for judging and got the position.

  21. Even though I thought Yo-kai Watch looks weird and obnoxious, I gave the demo a try and was surprisingly entertained.

    1. MegasonicZX

The full game itself is pretty amazing, i'd definitely suggest getting it if your interested.

  22. > Reads up on Aokigahara out of curiosity due to reportings about it's ghosts.

    > Reads that it has a windy cave and a icy cave

    > Ermmmm....did this place inspire Sonic Team given there's a windy cave and an icy cave in Adventure?

  23. If there's one Sonic character who's potential has never been exploited well, it's Metal Sonic. I'd love to see MS actually live up to it's so-called formidable reputation.

    1. AlphaRuby

So it's the Boba Fett of the Sonic series?

    2. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

"I cannot tell a lie father, you know I cannot tell a lie. OVA version of Metal Sonic is still the best one."

    3. TCB

As a diehard Metal Sonic fan I wholeheartedly agree

    4. Celestia

I feel like he's just not appeared often enough to live up to that reputation in the first place. It's kind of weird how few appearances he's had in main games (and aside from CD and Heroes most of them have been cameos or very minor roles, like the fight in Generations) considering he's, as far as I can tell, fairly popular.

    5. DarkLight

He needs to show what's he's made of.

    6. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

But only on a Sunday, when he's riding his bike.

    7. DarkLight

And preferably not as some robot-dragon thing.

    8. Dr. Crusher

      Dr. Crusher

Still more dignified than the dress and elf shoes.

    9. Lord-Dreamerz

He really needs to win some battles for once in a story hardcore style. Because it's hard for him to feel intimidating when we only see him.lose 100% of the time. The best way to see that happen would be for him to be playable in a big enough role... but hat is so unlikely nowadays.

  24. There's still quite a number of fast food restaurants that have never been in the UK to my knowledge like Wendy's, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A, Jack in the Box and Sonic. Sort of curious about Wendy's.

    1. TCB

      >there's no Wendy's in the UK

      >Missing out on their sea salt seasoned fries, bacon cheeseburgers, chili, chicken nuggets that are actually good and Frostys

      i cri

    2. Patticus

Wendy's is alright, but it really doesn't stand out at all. It's very average. Maybe some fans here could let you in on what makes it special?

Tco Bell is pretty decent, but the portion sizes can be tiny, and our local one has pot smoking managers who put their "dooby" ashes in the cheese sauce, and one guy who jerks himself off into the meat. Definitely worth a look, as I'm sure most aren't as bad as ours. For a real good Mexican meal, though, the US has plenty of good Mexican restaurants that aren't just a chain - but if you're in a hurry Taco Bell can do the job.

Chick-Fil-A is pretty good, I ate at their Philadelphia airport branch a few times. Tasty goodness.

The other two I cannot comment on. Five Guys has a couple of places in the UK now - do check those out, they're truly amazing. I want to try In & Out Burger soon, if I can find one.

    3. TCB

I personally place Wendy's in the "above-average" range of fast food chains. I definitely place it over Burger King.

    4. Vertekins

@Patticus I went to Five Guys earlier in Birmingham's BullRing but I only indulged in a bottomless drink from those amazing Freestyle machines. The burgers are pretty expensive.

    5. TCB

They may be a tad pricey but it's definitely worth it for their fresher ingredients and they way they prepare your food.

    6. PaddyFancy

There's about nine Taco Bell's in Great Britain.

    7. Patticus

@Vertekins Yeah it's a bit pricey, but the portions are vast and you get great food. Go and get you a custom fresh burger and a large fries and indulge yourself.

  25. Sonic feels such a close connection to his shoes in Adventure that he actually took to inscribing his name on the soles; I assume that's what Sonic's writing looks like
