  1. Exactly what about Forces is a step in the right direction that makes so many say that? The story? Tone? Way it handles 3D Sonic gameplay compared to past games?

There's some text here and there that tells you that other characters do things

Maybe a 10 second action sequence or two

Some folks like the greater focus on characterization, larger utilization of the Sonic franchise's extended cast, and the game's efforts to mix drama and humor. Others like the risk-taking elements like the Avatar and the return of Shadow as a playable character with his own side story, showing promise that Sonic Team may well stop with solo Sonic and start adding more playable characters and/or subplots in the mainline games. And others just plain like Boost and hope to see more of it (Sonic Lost World may or may not have anything to do with this). Some also like the idea of getting the same or similar experience on a Nintendo console (particularly one that is portable) as they would on a Sony or Microsoft platform.

Note that all of the above does not necessarily reflect my viewpoints, but its generally what I hear from folks.

thanks to forces we inch ever so slightly closer to the point where modern sonic dies.

hopefully the next sonic will fare better.

The Visuals and Music. My goodness the music was the true highlight of the game. Along with the Death egg outer space area. Some of the best visuals I've seen in gaming. The story was decent, until I played the prologue, then it became stupid. That could have honestly been left out. Oh the customization for the custom hero was welcomed. And the sneaky return of SOAP shoes.

The story tone, the use of characters, the Avatar feature (for me), playable Shadow, the fact that it's trying to do actual stuff and ideas for once. I appreciate that, so if it sells well I hope they expand on this direction... with better gameplay and more development time.

Sonic's characterisation was back to what it had been before Colours.

For me, that would be cutscenes. It felt nice having more action within the cutscenes and not just have characters standing around and talking every single scene. My favorite scene is the Silver vs Infinite scene. The action there was nice (And a bit hype) to see, but also because I like Sonic coming in with his fun dialogue, which leads me into dialogue and character interactions.

I think actually having the other side characters in the plot was a step in the right direction. Make them a bit more involved and continue giving them nice dialogue/character interactions with one another. I really liked in the Shadow DLC where Shadow and Rouge bounced off each other well. There's also Knuckles and Amy during Aqua Road where she pokes fun at Knuckles maybe wanting to play in the water slide and being jealous that the Avatar can. It's stuff like that that I feel IS a step in the right direction for the Modern games. It's 2017 and the franchise has a lot of great characters that should have moments to shine even if they aren't playable.

It's very beautiful on a visual scale, graphics are definitely a step up.

Story returns to the action-y and serious tone which many including have been wanting for a long time.

It actually gives off a true sense of adventure and tension that makes it entertaining instead of the characters standing around making comedy routines.

While they were technically underutilized and mostly did things off screen, most of the cast were still present and accounted and occasionally had their moments which should happen more frequently and showing them doing stuff.

Not saying the gameplay is an improvement as it's flawed but it's still fun to blast through, but needs to be more open next time with better design as well as longer.

      Wonderful aesthetics.

Most of the characters especially Sonic are pretty much on point with occasional interactions.

It can be very cheesy at times but that's the charm of Sonic some of us miss.
