  1. “Wow that Articuno sounds cool. It’d be awesome if it was real”

This is in Johto. Way after the 2nd film. God damn Ash you fucking dumbass. Why can’t they connect the events of the movies to the show consistently like normal people? You can’t tell me that’d ruin anything. I mean the movies have no problem directly tying into the anime’s events.:/

    1. KHCast

Also why does the anime treat legendary Pokémon like common with multiple of them, when the movies make it more clear there’s only the one “legendary”? Like in Pokemon the movie 2, the villain dude makes it apparent there’s just the one of each of the bird legendaries.

Just wait until the Sinnoh league.

“Can’t have too much continuity; that might make kids look too far back beyond the current generation and realize how often we don’t give a damn about past events unless we need a quick dash of nostalgia!”

That or the movie verse is just an alternate universe of the anime that just inexplicably happens to have the same people with the same Pokémon.

    4. Strickerx5

Man, you’re asking the same questions I was asking over a decade back. Lol

The anime rarely ever gives a shit about continuity between seasons. I remember specifically being happy when Ash actually turned his cap back once at the tail end of Sinnoh... like, that was enough to get excitement out of me I was so gd desperate at that point.

And then they DO acknowledge the second movie during the Lugia arc a few episodes later.

Going through the show again after so long, just wow, my nostalgia glasses really wore off. From Ash and co never being able to point out team rocket because they put a fucking hat on, to movie events sometimes being used to advance the plot while also being retconned the next moment, to the number of Pokémon being established within the lore constantly changing, Oak being a liar if future films are to be believed, to ash just NEVER AGING. God this show.:|

What’s even worse for me is that the characters really aren’t as fun as I remember. Ash is a idiot, Misty is needlessly angry and stereotypical girly girl, and Brock is a borderline stalker and womanizer that I wouldn’t be surprised to see in our age be called out for his shit. Like damn, the man needs to chill, we get it, he likes girls.

The show plays it loose with continuity to remain accessible.

    8. Soniman

Who cares man. It's seriously not a big deal

(Also if you think there's little to no continuity for at least the first 4 generations of the anime you are wrong)

I got tired of team rocket mid hoenn. I would fast foward most of their solo scenes and mottos. And yeah it got tiring seening that Ash and co could tell it was team rocket. I guess at that point i was in my mid teenage years those nostaglia glasses came off then

Expecting continuity here is like expecting Ash to grow up

    11. KHCast

Other shows can be accessible while having a stable continuity, so I find that excuse as dumb as the excuse for why S&S doesn’t have Pokémon transfers for all Pokémon.

@Soniman there’s selective continuity. But not a actual stable consistent one. It’s fucking dumb

    12. Wraith

If Ash aged drastically he would be older than the target audience of the series whicn would defeat the point of it. Its not supposed to be a long running narrative.

    13. KHCast

Age not changing is one thing(though  then maybe don’t rely constantly on ash and use different characters like, yknow, most cartoons like this? Yugioh did it and is still successful. Ash gets to be annoying anyway, just have him win a championship, and move on to someone new.) but, that shouldn’t be reason for relying on a completely shitty story will barely any stable consistency. Again, how the fuck would connection to films, or just not dropping the “oh there’s only (blank) number of Pokémon in the world” line(something they knew was going to be bs), ruin it for kids?

I'm sorry not everyone had the power of hindsight back in the 90s where they weren't sure if Pokemon would be a flash in the pan fad or not and not eventually become a multi-billion dollar franchise 20 plus years later.

I'm sure they're really kicking themselves for writing that throwaway line about there being 151 pokemon. I hope someone got fired for that.

    15. Wraith

It wouldn't ruin it, but the series is designed to be able to be picked up from any episode essentially, so theyre just lax about it and dont lean too hard on it.

Its not like these little continuity niggles actually harm the series, anyway. For what Pokemon was trying to do it was a solid series and still is. A lot of genuine craftsmenship went into making it a fun watch and I think its silly to dump on it for some cinemasins-esque moaning about continuity errors like anyone watching ever even cared about that compared to the moment to moment interactions.

      >Believing that after the mega success of the first Pokémon game and first season, the Pokémon company didn’t expect for there to be more Pokémon games and thus more Pokémon.

I don’t think they needed hindsight here.

Look, obviously the show was well received by kids. They’re kids that for the most part don’t look that deep into the shallowness. I’m just saying growing up, it’s really dawning on me that there are tons of problems I have with the show now. It’s not just the dumb wishy washy continuity and a consistent narrative, but also just the vapid characters that start to get bland and repetitive with their arcs. As I said, the main trio isn’t all that great as individuals, and despite spending all this time together, I never feel genuine character growth between them. Sure they may have moments where interesting things may happen or develop, but it’s never acted on.  This is doubly true for team rocket which is just a disappointment with how they show signs of being decent people with sad backstories, but nope, bad guys they’re 100% bad guys everyone. Ash called them losers so you know they’re bad.

    17. Soniman

      I 100% completely disagree so I guess that's that

I’m sort of in the camp where I’d wish they’d stick to some general form of storytelling rather than the hair-thin line to *insert region’s championship here* but I get why they don’t. Pokemon simply seems to have this growing issue of trying to keep things baseline so that it isn’t daunting for newcomers to jump in. I can say that I’d wish certain events in the anime carried more weight but, at this point, you’d have a One Piece situation where new viewers now have hundreds of episodes to catch up on.

It’s one thing when the content is presented in a “take it or leave it” case like including all the Pokemon in the mainline games (where their inclusion don’t hinder any newcomer’s experience because they don’t have to get them). It’s a completely different thing with story where everything (should) build upon itself. At that point, you are asking a lot from newer generations and more so as time progresses.

It does sucks for some long time viewers (it’s honestly the main reason I’ve fallen off from the show) and generally for anyone who enjoys long running story arcs. Like, when you consider that we’ve been getting better storylines across the board in media as a whole, seeing Pokemon remain in its unchanging bubble does get frustrating. Though, it’s sort of the trade off they have to make to keep this going for so long and have it cater to so many people.

Imo, I think the best solution to this would be to start a completely different anime that has more of a story focus. Though, it’s not like they haven’t tried that already...

    19. KHCast

Pokémon origins I always thought was an experiment to see if they could branch out with a new story/protagonist. Shame they didn’t develop more on that but eh, you name fair points I guess. Still wish they introduced new protags instead of simply always sticking with ash personally
