I’ll believe it when I fucking see it

I feel like they've said that numerous times before.

They've said it before, but with the 2-year delay between Generations and Lost World, and then the 4-year delay between Lost World and Forces... it seems sincere that they're going to put out Sonic games much less regularly. The quality issue is another matter entirely, because both Lost World and Forces are rather crap.

You see, for any other developer, this would be good news. Though, with ST, I can’t help but compare what we got when they took their time vs what we got when they didn’t. And honestly guys, I can’t lie and say that I prefer the former.

We’re basically in a situation where the games are taking longer and are still trash (hell worse in multiple cases). Like... this is sort of fucked lol. The stance I’m leaning towards here defies logic but, at this point, so has ST.

If we’re not getting game news for the foreseeable future, I at the very least want to see exactly what changes they’re making internally to tackle these issues on the development end. Hopefully that’s what Aaron was hinting at in the stream yesterday. No more of this “we need to focus on quality” pr shit without any actual backing actions in the organization.

It’s starting to get to the point where they do that after each gd game release.

Sonic Team feel like a huge case of "The boy who cried w̶o̶l̶f̶ quality." They really need to start showing what they mean in the future instead of only saying it.

It does seem like SEGA are starting to take longer releasing new games (whether Sonic Team are using the extra time properly for game development & polishing new games god only knows....). They've also been delaying games a lot lately (instead of rushing them out) which is a positive sign.

I'd forgotten about that. Both Mania and TSR were got fairly significant delays, and both were developed very much outside of SEGA'S internal studios.

    7. Strickerx5

Huh, so this has less to do with ST specifically and is really more of just a general thing across Sega then.

Still, in this case, I'd really like to see how this extra time is being spent on their end. I just can't in good faith trust them at this point.

    8. Tracker_TD

Yeah, the original announcement of the quality over quantity scheme was from Satomi; it wasn't a Sonic-specific thing.

I'd say they've done a fairly good job with it; Yakuza 7, from what I understand, did fairly well critically in Japan and with fans despite its radical shift, and personally speaking I quite enjoyed Sakura Wars. Ironically their mascot is their main Achilles heel with the pledge right now.

They rushed Forces though, so this scheme for Sonic specifically started with TSR seemingly, despite being a forgotten game, it was delayed for 7 months.

well with forces it seems like they twiddled their thumbs for three years then threw shit together in one, these guys need not just time but time management

    11. JosepHenry

Those three years were making the HE2 engine, which is ready now, so maybe they will add more time working on games.

Last sxsw iizuka said next game was already in development, so we are probably reaching the dev time forces did, and we haven't gotten a single info on this next. To me that's a good sign that they are taking their time.

If they spent three years working on the Forces engine, graphical and otherwise, I'm very concerned. Sakura Wars is super pretty and puts the Hedgehog Engine to good use, but the fuck were Sonic Team doing when it came to  putting it to use in a Sonic game?

The scene: A dark battlefield, dark, stormy clouds everywhere, a few beams of light shining through them...

      Hedgehog Engine 2:

    14. Tracker_TD

I can see them having prioritised 60fps on consoles with Forces, hence the gap between it and Sakura Wars; that and it was their first time utilising the engine (though granted, that didn't mean much for Unleashed).

Sakura Wars has a fairly stable framerate (or at least I don't recall much in the way of notable dips), but it's not 60fps; I do actually prefer them to put FPS over the pwetty graphics for Sonic, but even so Forces is just ugly in a lot of places.

The scene: And then, the sun breaks appears in the sky, hurtling towards the Earth below.

Hedgehog Engine 2: Quick, turn up the bloom slightly!

kinda wild how much less impressive the hedgehog engine 2 came across in 2017 than the OG 9 years earlier

    17. JosepHenry

But at least we have a comparsion between Rio and Tokyo, which Rio used an eariler version of HE2, and Tokyo is the latest one, and Tokyo looks absolutely stunning compared to Rio.

But I have also blame Forces ugliness on it's artstyle is so muddy and gross.

The mobile game doesn't use HE2. It's not even close.

And now the entirety of next gen is focused on lighting tech and support that make all the Hedgehog Engine updates effectively useless, so they essentially wasted all of those 3 years for nothing lmao

    20. Thigolf

Why don't they use Unreal Engine and be done with it

At least the first Hedgehog engine tried to be something remarkable (and succeeded imo), I have no idea why they even bothered with the second one

I don't know why they go propietary, but I think Forces has an ugly artstyle and generally poor graphical direction. It's not a great representation of what the HE might be capable of.

    22. The Deleter

      The Deleter

The whole point of the first hedgehog engine was to stream data at the speeds that Unleashed provided Sonic with. The whole point of the Hedgehog Engine 2 was to try and make the lighting - something that the Unleashed team spent crazy amounts of time and money on building and baking manually - more accessible and in line with more modern game engine lighting, where you can drag and drop a sun/light source, give textures reflections, and be done with it.

They probably stuck with it because they've been using Hedgehog Engine as their proprietary graphics engine since Unleashed, and wanted to carry over their knowledge of the first to the second than jump ship to a new dev platform, even if Forces Sonic never reaches the speeds Unleashed did. Lotta good that did the game's graphics at the end of the day, though...

Again, I wouldn't past to only use barely a tenth of UE5's full power.
