  1. Now Gohan going out before 17 makes sense. Had Toppo fought this current Gohan, it would have just been him taking down another fighter. But against 17 he's established that his GoD power surpasses beyond infinite energy. As for Freeza, he needed to get his teeth kicked in. Dunno what happens to him now, but he's going to be staggering for a while. Holy hell, Jiren is supposed to be stronger than this. He at least takes damage right now, but to think he's stronger than this eclipsing Toppo.... This episode was terrifyingly animated. A whole lot of imposing shots and colors. Now that the show's hit endgame, this animation should remain consistent.

I can only presume to help direct the next Starfox because it sure as hell needs it.

      Blacklightning

Considering they fucked up even with Platnium fucking Games I'm convinced talent isn't the issue so much as ideals. Starfox would be fine if just they stopped using it as a vehicle for pointless gimmicks for one god damned minute.

  3. Gohan did indeed drop in this episode, but he took Dyspo down with him just as Dyspo had started to fight at max power. Had Gohan and Freeza cut their losses at the end of their plan and went on defense, Dyspo would just have a ton of momentum and go on a rampage that Goku and Vegeta can't spare any thought for while fighting Jiren. It was a gut decision and it paid off.
  4. Alternatively they can take the Naruto Shippuden route and bring the show back in a new Super-related moniker. Maybe they decide to throw another tournament in ten Earth years time, therefore the timeline is chucked into the End of Z territory we’ve wanted for so long?
  5. Not really. It's more like a season finale of Super while efforts are being relocated toward the new DB movie and Kitaro's anniversary. Consider it a hiatus, not a true finale.
  6. World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. was the VG song of the 80s.

I guess Final Fantasy VII's Prelude was the VG song of the 90s?

Live and Learn was the VG song of the 2000s.

And the VG song of the 2010s atm is...idk, Bonetrousle?

    1. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

Honestly if we're picking UT songs it might as well be Hopes and Dreams or Megalovania.

I thought Escape from the City was the VG song of the 2000s.

There's many good choices for 2010s... Megalovania? Last Surprise? Jump Up, Super Star? BFG Division? I dunno, I can't think back too far.

    4. JezMM

      JezMM

I feel these become more and more "cult popular" rather than "popular popular" as the list goes down lol.  EVERYONE knows the Mario theme.  The same can't be said of the other three.  Not even sure if there IS a song from those eras that have that same worldwide appeal, apart from maybe Sonic 1's main theme for 90's?

    5. Mr Loopone

      Mr Loopone

While I'll agree that the Super Mario Bros. Theme was the song back then but it wasn't always like that. In the UK it might have been either one of Rob Hubbard's stuff (Monty on the Run, Commando), Magical Sound Shower from Out Run or Martin Galway's Comic Bakery as the song of the 1980s. Seriously Comic Bakery got a lot of remixes and pops up in unlikely places during that time. Ever played Jurassic Park on the Game Boy? The first level theme IS Comic Bakery.

90s is harder because it was like split into two halves (chiptune/Amiga era and redbook era). For the former, I go with Green Hill. For the latter not sure since it was when people started putting licensed songs into games and they are probably more well known than nearly all these songs put together. I always thought that One Winged Angel was the Final Fantasy VII song so I'll go for that, Facility from GoldenEye or Joyride from Grand Theft Auto in terms of popularity. Probably also a Super Mario 64 song too. Personally I would have loved to say Super Sonic Racing as that fits with the mid to late 90s like a glove with its cheesy Brit-pop.

Oh, I forgot about DAAAYYYTOOONNNAAA. Let's Go Away. Yep.

I can't recall many songs from the 2010s since for many games, it is either ambiance or orchestral movie style with a few exceptions being whatever Mick Gordon made, some indie games and the usual Nintendo/Sonic/Jake Kaufman stuff. I'll probably go for Megalovania as well, it fits with the indie game evolution that this decade had.

  7. Tediously pointless arts and crafts using cardboard prone to breaking and bending, taking more shelf space than needed, and repeatedly opening up and fiddling with when you want to use the gamepad and joycons for other games. No. Go play with a Wii Tennis Racket instead.
  8. I'm kinda surprised Mania didn't get some kind of post-launch DLC content series.

    1. Jack out of the comics!
    2. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

As upsetting as it is, I'm actually not terribly surprised. I would hazard to guess that the keyholders at Sonic Team weren't confident enough in the project to let it extend beyond what we have now. That, along with the stark contrast in promotion compared to Forces post-launch, I think Sega wanted to place their eggs in the Forces basket, expecting it to gain them more revenue, or at least help them break even with the budget they had given that game. You'd better believe that a 4+ year project like Forces had lots of backing behind it, so I think it made sense to Sega to fund extra (cheaply made) content for that game, rather than take what they'd consider a risky move with the smaller Mania project.

      But that's my educated guess.

    3. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Super Sonic is already free in Mania though, so what else could they add?

    4. Sean

      Sean

Sonic Generations didn't get DLC so it's natural to assume Mania wouldn't, because it would make too much sense for Sega

    5. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

Oh, I forgot Generations didn't get anything... ok now I'm mad about that one again

    8. Sean

      Sean

It was a preorder-only bonus for console users that was locked on the disc. Technically DLC but wasn't what anybody wanted when they asked for Gens DLC

    9. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

      Mania doesn't need dlc.

    10. Sean

      Sean

Doesn't need it but it'd be fun to have more returning levels since pretty much everyone agrees that a Mania 2 should downsize the number of returning levels if not have completely original levels entirely.

    11. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

Moreso than new levels, I'd love to see the cut act transitions added in as well as a time attack/level select for the special stages (bc hot dang they're so good)

    12. Sean

      Sean

Honestly I don't get the fuss over the lack of transitions and they wouldn't really affect anything for me if they had been there or not

    13. -Robin-

      -Robin-

It's the lack of some transitions that's the problem. Either do 100% or 0%, not 55%

    14. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

Just a little extra polish. It's the only leg up 3&K has over Sonic Mania as far as I'm concerned; it's kinda weird how some levels have them and then other's don't. It's obviously not crucial, but just a little something I'd love to see amended.

    15. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

      What Indi said.

The tranistions are important in Mania to explain how Sonic travels from a Sonic 2 zone to a Sonic 3 stage and then to a Sonic CD level. The lack of transitions near the end makes the last few zones more of a chore.

    16. JezMM

      JezMM

It was the team's first big project so I think they were being cautious, both for money's sake and the sake of the humans making it, which is perfectly fair imo.  While I too would like to see a spot of polish to finish it up, it's great as is.

And to be honest, I find Forces' DLC to be on par with Generations.  The only substantial piece was there at launch and free and the other two pieces were dumb little extras.  Only 2006, Unleashed and Lost World have ever had any meat to their DLC.

    17. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Didn't Christian and his team's contract end with Sega soon after the game came out on PC? I doubt they'd want to renew it for anything less than a new game at this point.

Also, Sonic games rarely get substantial DLC in general, especially post release. In fact, over the last decade+ I can only recall 3 games that got anything of the sort; 06, Unleashed, and LW (which was probably more Nintendo's doing than anything).

    18. Sean

      Sean

Having more transitions would have been alright with me but not to the point where I'd cite it as a bullet point in a list of cons about the game, or something I'd want them to patch in over almost literally anything else I'd rather than add to the game

    19. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

Again I do want to emphasize that it's just a little detail I'd like to see added. It was certainly intended to be there in the first place, and I think the Mania Team would be ecstatic to add 'em in. It's nothing major, but it'd be cool and help the flow a little.

I'm serious about those Special Stages tho. They could be a game all on their own.

    20. KHCast

      KHCast

It’s not really “on par” when Gens doesn’t have dlc.:/

    21. JezMM

      JezMM

That's what I mean, to me it doesn't feel like Forces had DLC.  Episode Shadow is the only thing of note and it's BASICALLY in the base game as long as you have an internet connection.  It might be DLC in the purely technical sense but when I think "DLC" I generally think "meaningful, post-launch additional content".

So in that sense, yeah, I find it to be on par with Generations, because the sanic t-shirt and super sonic DLC are so meaningless they might as well not be there.

    22. Sean

      Sean

Is Episode Shadow even still accessible now? It's N/A on Forces' steam page.

  11. Reminder that the Silver Sonic section in the Metal Sonic boss fight is objectively awful in flow and design.

    1. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

No joke, I didn't actually know you had to spindash to get a guaranteed hit on Metal there until someone here told me so.. I thought the idea was to hit Silver in midair at just the right angle to bop him into Metal, and the fact that there's more feedback for this false angle of attack than the intended one is really irritating.

  12. tbh, I'm quite intrigued by the concept of a Phantom Ruby. Just something that can compete with the Chaos Emeralds. By virtue of sequel hook, there's now no real reason to bring the Modern Universe into this potential plot anymore, but the Classic series of games now has a plot with Rubies, and maybe other gemstones, that it can use to tie the mythos together across more classic titles.

    1. Milo

      Milo

Classic Sonic games did have magical artifacts other than the Chaos Emeralds before Mania. Sonic CD had the Time Stones, Knuckles' Chaotix had the Chaos Rings, Flickies Island had the Flickies being able to travel through dimensions via rings.

  13. Had Goku taken an extra second to blast the rock pieces into debris, Jiren would have lost. Without needing Ultra Instinct to clutch it. It's not just about power, but how you use it, and Jiren is, demonstrably, not a perfect fighter. It is within Goku's and Vegeta's abilities to take him down, especially with this new Super Vegeta Blue powerup.

  16. This bit right here actually puts Whis's idea on Vegeta's weakness in perspective. All the way back in Resurrection F, Whis pointed out that Vegeta's greatest weakness was that he was too focused on surpassing Goku; at this point, it meant just achieving the same forms Goku did and eventually outstripping Goku within that form itself. So dead set on effectively beating Goku at his own game that he never considered getting stronger individually and bettering Goku then. Ultra Instinct is a complete absence of identity and cognizance, letting the body doing the work while the mind listens and devises strategy. To let go of attachments would mean letting go of his Saiyan legacy, and Vegeta, as a person, could never do that. But instead of agonizing over it, he's now eschewing the purity of Ultra Instinct, actually forfeiting the power to Goku to refine and use, in favor of buckling down and just getting stronger anyway, through his own methods, methods that embody the pride and spirit of the Saiyans that Goku could never understand. Vegeta's going to get a new form next episode, that cerulean hair, pupilled form. A form that Goku presumably cannot get himself. If this form is borne out of Vegeta's defining characteristic - his pride in being a Saiyan - then this may be the most significant transformation in Dragonball after the original Super Saiyan, and the complete culmination of Vegeta's character. Understanding of what pride and honor can do, and how one can better himself without needing to follow the leader, so to speak. First he became a legend. Then he became a god. Now, he's in a state that encapsulates the Saiyan Prince Vegeta. I'm quite hyped for these next few episodes now.

The hair is more cerulean here, opposed to the sky blue SSB hair has, and the eyes seem to have pupils. Might be a cross between Blue and UI that Vegeta stumbled into.
