  1. From what I can see the modding effort on the Mega Drive mini is close to being ready for release. Anybody planning to try and get more games onto their mini? I might finally grab one around Christmas, would be good to get stuff like Sonic 3 Complete and the 3D Blast Director's Cut on there.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I've paid no attention to the modding community for it whatsoever, but I'm pretty inclined to check it out now they you've mentioned it. I've bought one for my brother as a Christmas present, and I'd love to be able to put some of our childhood favourites in there for him. The library on the system is great, but it's not perfect and it was never going to be.

  2. Assuming the PS5 and Project Scarlet launch around the same time, say November, next year, are any of you planning on jumping to next-gen then or are you holding off for a bit?

The Switch was my first day one console so I'm gonna wait and see. The backwards compatibility on either will definitely be a big temptation if they came through. Would compensate for a weaker launch line-up.

    1. Thigolf

      Thigolf

Absolutely dependent on the games. I might jump right away, but only if I'm really tempted by what they have to show.

    2. Menace2Society

      Menace2Society

Jumping in head on at a console’s launch is always a bad idea, mainly because of the numerous issues consoles usually have around that time, not to mention the section of launch titles is usually pretty lackluster. I’ll probably just hold them off for a month or two, before getting either system (most likely the PS5, cuz I was always more of a Playstation guy.)

    3. Panda Claus

      Panda Claus

I may jump to PS5 if that rumour about it being completely back-compatible turns out to be true.

    4. Solly

      Solly

the list of games that could get me to buy a PS5, day one, begins and ends with Bloodborne 2.

    5. Ryannumber1Santa

      Ryannumber1Santa

I'm probably jumping on with the PS5 for Christmas.

    6. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

I'm gonna have to wait another decade before I upgrade again. I'm always behind because of money issues.

    7. Milo

      Milo

I just bought a Switch this year, so likely not

    8. NegaMetallix

      NegaMetallix

Putting aside that I usually never have enough money for new consoles at launch, I'm probably gonna hold off on the purchase anyway.

Though if the PS5 does manage to have full compatibility with PS4 AND PS3 games at launch, then I may be tempted to get one sooner than later.

  3. I kinda wish the Chaos Emeralds were expanded upon to have a bit more give and take from a plot perspective. In gameplay you obviously get speed, invincibility and flight at the cost of the ring time limit but in universe there is literally no reason why Sonic shouldn't be going super the moment trouble shows up. Even in Sonic 3 he seems to initially plan on charging Angel Island as Super Sonic.

Might be interesting if there were potential consequences about them that really makes them an "absolute last resort" thing.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

well, sonic probably wouldn't immediately go super every time just because it isn't as fun to trivially crush mooks with borrowed power.

otherwise though...well, most of the time the emeralds don't end up together until the time when they're really needed anyway, and they're usually scattered by the next game. you could argue that it's kind of contrived, but personally I see it as a sort of manifestation of fate kind of thing. you couldn't just carry them around and use them whenever you want even if you tried; you'd fail to be able to find them all, or they'd scatter after use, unless it was necessary for them to be used.

    2. Panda Claus

      Panda Claus

Sonic 3’s opening as a whole just kind of throws any semblance of logic out the window.

How does Sonic have the emeralds to begin with? Are they kept over from when he got them at the end of Sonic 2? But then how does he still have them when they should have scattered after he used them? Why does he bring them with him to Angel Island in the first place? How is it, despite Super Sonic’s invincibility, that it could easily be cancelled out by a single hit from Knuckles?

    3. Teoskaven

      Teoskaven

The more the games went on, the more the Chaos Emeralds became plot convenient only, capable of doing whatever the hell the writers wanted: power source, limiter unlocker, teleportation device, time travel mechanism, you name them. There's a clear lack of caring for consistency.
This is probably why they have stopped being used plotwise pretty much after Unleashed.

    4. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

      @Noodle Panda

On top of all that, the originally never would've gone through with all that if they just keep the surfboard opening:

Image result for sonic 3 opening surfboarding

I feel the emeralds were only put in there to make Knuckles look cooler.

      @Teoskaven

The Phantom Ruby more likely than not was done to act as a replacement for plot relevant Chaos Emeralds. Let's face it, couldn't any ability the Ruby does could just as easily been made up for the emeralds if they were in the plot instead?

    5. Sean

      Sean

We haven't had a game involving the emeralds since Gens, it'd be nice to see them make a return to relevancy. Forces is the one game that doesn't have them yet would have made sense to.

    6. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

It's about time we get another 3D Sonic game where you earn the chaos emeralds by completing a special stage just like with the classic games. I guess Heroes was the last 3D game to do this?

  4. With a...and a...and a whole pack of robots!

      PC the Hedgehog

Thanks for that great skydiving lesson the other day!

  5. Would love to get into Pokemon and thought Sword and Shield might be a jump-in point but it's looking like I'll have the same issues I had when I tried Pokemon X, the simplicity and soft difficulty curve mean I'm probably just gonna wind up bored a couple hours in again.

    1. Panda Claus

      Panda Claus

The last good jumping on point was Gen V imo

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Yeah, I don't think that these are the best entry points for you. They're too easy. Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee is actually more difficult. I'd actually recommend this.

    3. Panda Claus

      Panda Claus

@Blue Blood really? Okay, maybe the Master Trainers are bloody insane, but the core game? I don’t see it.

    4. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

The Master Trainers are artificial difficulty that are absolutely no fun at all.

The core game isn't difficult by any stretch. But the way that the game is laid out, the trainers that you battle and the routes being as long as they are, it's a more difficult game than SwSh. If you want a game that can actually be called difficult (which is mostly self-determined in Pokémon anyway), you need to try RSE/DPPt. Everything else is... No.

    5. Sean

      Sean

      GSC is where to start

    6. Joy

      Joy

@Blue Blood I had Let's Go Pikachu for a while and had the same issue. I knew what I was getting into with that one in particular but yeah everything just felt like a non-event.

I did have Pokemon Silver back in the early 2000s and remember enjoying it more, hence trying to get into the series more properly now. I feel like there's a bit of atmosphere that was lost once the series switched to 3D models but that's really a seperate thing altogether.

    7. Sean

      Sean

If you've already played gen2 then I recommend going straight to Platinum. Avoid Diamond and Pearl

  6. It's hardly a big thing but I actually prefer the way Sonic's shoes look in the movie compared to how they look on the Modern Sonic model.  There's something more ergonomic about them and actually look like fabric that can deform rather than the somewhat chunky rigid design in recent games.

  7. Partially expecting "Don't Stop Me Now" to show up in a trailer, commerical or in the film itself.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

There's that Video Games documentary that opens with a montage set to that song, with Sonic 1 indeed showing up in the "supersonic" part.

    2. SonicWind

      SonicWind

Considering this is Sonic we're talking about, it'd fit perfectly.

    3. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

      THAT or Highway to Hell.

      Both would be 10/10.

  8. Got Sonic R working on my PC and did a 100% run. It's honestly such a nice little time capsule for me. So short that it's a comfortable game to start fresh, do everything in a couple of hours and move onto something else.

    1. FReaK

      FReaK

couple of hours? more like 30 min...lel

but yes, I know what you mean. I like to fire up my saturn from time to time, same for sonic 3d. I always feel thrown back in time..I miss those times a lot.

  9. I know the movie variant of the puma shoes were gonna be release at some point, I'm still hoping that the new movie shoes are getting a release, I'll sure as hell by those!

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Likewise! I somehow doubt they'll be available in my size, but that's not the point. These could the first ever time we get an official release of Sonic's shoes. Slippers don't count...

    2. Joy

      Joy

I've got the Drop Dead slippers from a while ago, but I definitely want a pair I can go places with. I'm already a stupidly fast walker so it's only appropriate 😅

    3. JayRaR

      JayRaR

hopefully they're reasonably priced. dont wanna throw down more than $100 for 1 pair

  10. As somebody who spent a lot of time with 06, straight-faced here, what was the intended purpose of the White gem? All the others generally have a definied purpose, regardless of how useful they actually ended up being but I don't get the White gem at all. Is the mid-air freeze meant to be an advantage?

    1. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

Theoretically it could save you from Homing Attacking directly into a projectile / fire breath if you jump towards them at an inopportune time, but like most of the gems I like to think it simply isn't fucking programmed correctly and might have been more useful if charging it actually did any extra damage.

  11. End of the working week and I've got the whole weekend to do nothing and play Tropical Freeze. All is well.

  12. Recently started work at a local animation studio working on a very cool project. Can't say anything about it but it's gonna be very exciting when it's finished.

More to the point though, everyone else has their desks decorated with toys and stuff so I bought one of the recent Funko Sonic's for my desk. Since when did these things start including bases? I only just noticed it in the box and it makes such a differece! Can't wait to take it to work tomorrow!

      Failinhearts

      Congrats!

  13. @Ryannumber1Scarer How have you been finding Overwatch on Switch? I don't have a PS Plus subscription anymore and for the price I'd probably be better off just sticking with Switch online. I'm not usually one to fuss about frame rate but I'm debating if that 30fps is gonna be a dealbreaker.

    1. Ryannumber1Santa

      Ryannumber1Santa

It isn’t a dealbreaker, not from my experience at least. It’s noticeable, especially if you’re used to the PS4 version, but after a game or two, you adjust to it and it becomes much more playable.

I’ve had fun with it, personally. It’s a good port.

    2. Ryannumber1Santa

      Ryannumber1Santa

      @Anger

Forgot to say, if you get it, give me a shout and we can play online if you want.

    3. Joy

      Joy

@Ryannumber1Scarer Will do! It's only £19 on CDKeys at the moment so it seems like a fair deal at that price.

  14. Finished another quick little piece to celebrate that Friday feeling!

  15. Sonic Forces' Ending Over-Simplified:

Sonic and friends group up to watch Tails say goodbye to Sonic. Sonic disappears and Tails is sad Sonic is gone, but then Sonic comes up and reassures Tails that they'll run into Sonic again.

    1. Tarnish

      Tarnish

Then Sonic urges everybody to rebuild the world, but deep down everyone knows he won't contribute jack to that because he just runs off like he always does.

  16. Congratulations San Francisco! You've ruined pizza! Halloween is gonna SUCK this year!

  17. Anybody been playing around with the games at SAGE yet? Are there any particular highlights you feel worth trying, aside from the latest Sonic 3 AIR update?

    1. Adamabba

      Adamabba

Im looking for the charger for my laptop that can handle playing the 3D games rn so I haven't tried anything yet. one I definitely wanna try is Sonic GT

This is an old demo, Im pretty sure they've added a few levels in the SAGE demo

    2. Tracker_TD

      Tracker_TD

I've played a bunch! Sonic Islands is fun to mess with, Speed Course is a good time, but my main highlight is Sondro Gomez right now.

  18. Finally finished my Spider-Gwen animation from the other day. Accidentally got some vibes of the Ultimate Spider-Man game!

      Joy, these shots are incredible!

      We gotta have these Jonah!

    2. Blue Wisp

      Blue Wisp

Oh shit yeah getting some really hard Ultimate Spider-Man game vibes.

      Really good job!

  19. "It always fits. Eventually"

  20. Been getting into the Doctor Who Target book range lately. I'm really loving how the recent releases have made a point of updating or expanding the TV stories to take advantage of known future events and doing more worldbuilding that suits the written format better than TV.

    1. Panda Claus

      Panda Claus

I can’t wait for the Target Storybook.

  21. I've never gotten to play a Super Monkey Ball game before so I'm excited to finally try with the new re-release, definitely seems like my kind of game. Sonic in there as a character is a nice little bonus too, I'll bet they've nabbed themselves at least a few extra sales from Sonic fans for that inclusion.

  22. "Friday what are they firing at?"

  23. A trope I kinda like in media is when character A knows or strongly suspects character B is hiding something and tricks character B into blowing their cover by making them believe they already know the secret.

I always liked the little sequence in SA2 with the fake emerald where Eggman picks up 2 emerald traces, immediately knows there's BS going on (since he's already got 6 of them) and makes the fairly safe bet the Heroes are gonna try a bait and switch. He then goes on to trick Tails into confirming the emerald they gave is fake before ejecting it along with Sonic.

  24. I know there's the Retro-Bit controllers but is there any word on whether or not the 3-button controllers packed with the Mega Drive mini are compatible with the PC / Switch at all?
