  1. sonic cd is a game that used to be praised by all as untouchable god juice and now its got the common reputation as "everyone loves it but i think it sucks". so in other words, sonic colors i guess

@Strickerx5 I'd say the "linear" description applies more to 3&K than 2; whatnot with its "ant colony" level structures. Meanwhile 2 I'd say still retains the layered routes of CD and some of 1's levels, albeit more streamlined for speed.

  2. So I replayed Sonic CD, this time with a proper controller and I can safely say I don’t get the appeal of this title.

The level design is incredibly asinine. I understand it’s meant to have a greater emphasis on exploration but it’s not fun to traverse to.

The boss fights are laughably bad and I can’t tell if that was meant to be the joke. Wacky workbench also exist.

And despite all this it’s regarded to be one the best game in the series.

@Tracker_TD Plenty of the gripes I’ve read about Scott makes me feel it would had greatly benefited from a proper QoL update/treatment like Sonic CD got with the Taxman remake; instead of the quick-and-dirty port job it has now.

Fix the balancing issues so it doesn’t ricochet from too hard to too easy one you get the proper upgrades, fix the bugs that were missed, re-do the netcode from scratch so it’s actually playable, and actually have all the content in the game (instead of the Ubisoft Connect with Knives nonsense that’s going on right now) along with some new stuff (O’Malley talked about how there was some extra DLC content being floated back in 2009 that didn’t pan out). Oh, and speaking of which, actually cut O’Malley a check/percentage of the profits, of course.

Imagine if the re-release had half of the amount of effort that was poured into the LRG special editions....

  3. HBO Max original Locked Down was released yesterday, and it included a new Warner Bros. Pictures logo:

For comparison, this was the former/current logo that's been in use since 1998:

@Ferno speaking of gravitas--one of my favorite WB logos is actually the home video logo they had in the 80s-mid-90s. visually it looks rather dated now and it's considered cheesy, but the bombastic fanfare and the text/shield animation i think helps sell the effect of importance.

(i also do like the 1998 75th logo I posted above, specifically due to the wind chime music)

      Some bonus trivia stuff:

There's actually a logo used in 2020 that had the former 1998 logo animation paired with the blue shield of the new 2021 logo. It's only been used for Tenet, which probably means it was a placeholder until the new logo was ready.

1998 marked what was the studio's 75th anniversary, and as such, the 1998 logo had a unique anniversary variant for each WB film that was released in that year.

  5. Ugh, can't believe Mario has become some edgy Anime shlock. He was so much better when he just saved princess and jumped on goombas. And what's with the stupid buttrock music, so cringe. 1-1 is so much better.

Nintendo really needs to start bringing Mario back to his roots.

  6. Been playing Sonic Jam's Sonic World for the first time (via emulation). IIRC World uses the same engine which was going to be used for Sonic Adventure when it was originally to be a SEGA Saturn game before being moved to Dreamcast. It's pretty cool.

There's 7 challenges (collect rings, touch a number of star-posts within a time-limit etc) which once completed unlocks the end credits. Tails being able to carry Sonic around is nice, although Tails' route is fixed, he can't free-fly where ever he wants. Then there's the concept art, trailers/animations you can view and soundtracks to listen to. So, there's a decent amount of content. If only SEGA would put this kind of effort into future compilations.

besides being the closest thing to a 3D classic sonic platformer (next to sonic r), it's also just the *bare minimum* glimpse of a 3D sonic mini-sandbox/collect-a-thon platformer could be, due to the mission structure and closed playspace

  7. The last game you played is gonna have a crossover with Fast & Furious.

  11. You know, if Mania 2 doesn't happen...doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of splitting Classic and Modern up....

    1. Misty Milo

      Misty Milo

Eh, if Sega aren’t interested to making a Mania successor, I don’t see them having any appetite for any G. Sonic projects in general. Reading the room, nothing signals an meaningful interest in having multiple diverse Sonic projects in motion.

I’m honestly half-expecting them to return to only using G. Sonic for merchandise, as in the 2000s.

  12. "Give Forces some slack, it was only developed in a year". Not a good excuse.

If we're being charitable and saying the dev time was 18 months, thats the same time Fallout New Vegas was developed in that that games a bona fide classic, it's state at launch aside.

But hey, it's not fair to compare a game with indepth rpg, dialogue and open world interactions to a game you can beat in 2 hours by holding down the go fast button.

    1. Misty Milo

      Misty Milo

Actually, Forces was developed over four years. It's full-scale production was one year, but the entire project was four years.

Which, honestly.....is worse than them just having only one year to make the game.

Considering that WB owns the bulk of MGM’s film library as it is (the pre-1986 stuff; they also own a decent amount of UA’s films as well); I’ll be surprised if AT&T doesn’t get them in the end. The big pushing point for them would be to virtually reunite MGM’s entire film library (and most of UA’s) under one roof. If another conglomerate was able to snatch up MGM, that opportunity is permanently gone.

Granted, AT&T are busy trying to offload the massive amount of debt they have from buying up DirecTV and TimeWarner as it is, but MGM’s asking price is significantly less than those two ($5B vs $67B / $85B), and I presume they could bring the price down with some negotiation.

  13. So as a follow up to yesterday's update, what's the best designed 3D Sonic level?

    1. Misty Milo

      Misty Milo

If we're talking platforming, pretty much every stage in Adventure 1 is a mile above the rest, no question. Out of all the stages in that game though, I'd probably have to pick something like Red Mountain or Lost World. I'd even nominate Sky Deck if it wasn't so glitchy TBH.

Meanwhile, if speed is the goal, I presume it's a stage from a Boost game. Probably Rooftop Run or Savannah Citadel from Unleashed, or Seaside Hill from Generations.

On a similar note. I remember seeing someone on Twitter earlier in the week being furious about how IGN gave the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 a lower score (4/10) than Sonic Forces (6.9/10).

Of course, this was despite IGN giving the (notably more polished) PC version for the game a 9/10 score; and the PS4 version having widespread mediocre scores in general for how much of an obvious beta that version of the game is.

I honestly nearly made a status update about it, but figured it wasn't worth the time.

Personally, I'm more resigned to see Crash or Shantae make it in as a preferred favorite. (Spyro too, but I imagine Crash would get priority in this scenario.) I guess I'm a sucker for punishment as there's still a twinge of me hoping for Rayman to make it in as a fighter, even after everything about Ubisoft/Ancel that's been reported this year.

With that said, here's an odd little story/aside. I had a dream about a Smash reveal earlier in the week and it involved one of the Pokemon from Sword and Shield (I think it's the ones on the covers, the dog/wolf Pokemon that's carrying a sword in its mouth) and 2B from Nier Automata as guest fighters. Please don't ask me why, I honestly can't explain it at all.

  17. Id say I'm a prophet, but this wasn't a hard guess. Nintendo calculated as fuck.

Considering how award shows are likely arranged well ahead of time, I imagine this was in the works for a while. Which surprises me in that they had a new fighter ready to reveal so soon; the gap for releases in-between fighters has increased quite a bit since the pandemic kicked in.  (Byleth was February, Min Min was June, Steve was October; although Steve reportedly needed extra dev time in order to have his Creator Block mechanics work consistently across all stages).

But yeah, coincidence or not, the timing is rather suspect.

  18. Hot Take: SA1 is the best 3D Sonic game

    1. Misty Milo

      Misty Milo

honestly, don't disagree. it's janky, rushed, and unfocused, and it's definitely lesser than stuff like SA2 and the boost games if speedrunning is where your priorities lie. but as a 3D platformer, it's easily head and shoulders above the rest.

  19. I really hope that BotW's sequel brings back the creepy vibes that almost all previous Zelda games flirted with. Like, I find OoT to be so genuinely unsettling at times. I have to psych myself up a bit to get the Sun's Song or to enter the Shadow Temple. And you can just fuck right off if you think I'm going to play the Forest Temple when it's dark outside. TP and MM may be darker, but they just can't hold a candle to the feelings I get from OoT. It's not childhood nostalgia talking either. TP was my first Zelda game back on the Game cube when I was 13 or 14, and I didn't really play OoT until the 3DS remake.

I'm not asking for a dark Zelda game again (although that would be nice), but the mildly creepy  elements that go back as far as the the NES original are missing from SS and BotW and that's a bit of a shame.

I'm not versed in Zelda at all, but if that teaser for the BotW sequel was anything to go by (that corpse thing of Ganondorf or whatever Link and Zelda come across); I'd be surprised if the actual game was nowhere near that level of creep factor....

Besides not wanting to relive another #followtherings cryptic clue campaign. One quick read of the room doesn't really show anything to hype up for Sonic to begin with.

The one exception being a Mania followup by Evening Star/TaxStealth & Friends, but even whether that's even happening is questionable.
