  1. So what's going on with the Steam boxes? I haven't been keeping up with them.

their ridiculously expensive and not what we first thought they would be.

The issue was that both the console and the controller are filling niches nobody was asking to be filled. The Steambox has no benefit to a regular PC. Besides being more expensive than building one yourself (as expected from prefabs), it also isn't upgradeable as current rigs are, due to the custom enclosure and specific Linux drivers.

Similarly, it doesn't replace traditional consoles either, A console is a fine investment because while you aren't getting the high end...

... of technology, you are getting a single machine that will play everything under the brand for the next 6-7 years without having to check specs or upgrade. Steam machines don't have that unity as they already have many different specifications of what a steam machine is. From Xi3's Piston prototype, to Digital Storm's more traditional PC replacement. There are going to be many different Steam Machines with varying specs which is going to be a nightmare to console unity. I can g...

... go and buy a used release Xbox 360 all they way up to the newest redesign and other than noise level and better heat distribution, but it's still the same machine. You can't say the same about multiple hardware profiles.

To sum it up, by trying to split the difference between a console and a PC, Valve has made a system (or set of systems) that has none of the benefits of either ecosystem. Why should I buy an expensive console that doesn't have good exclusives? Why should I buy a PC that is more expensive and does less than my current PC? I believe that in its current state of information is simply a lemon, and the only reason people care is because it has the Valve and Steam Logo on the side of the box.
