Star Wars certainly has the worse Fandom by a country mile but the products in the same quality as Sonic? Not even close

    He's so gross.
I don't even understand how they managed to make him look so gross. Like, he's legitimately visually repulsive. I thought I had actually started to get used to the design but no, seeing it in motion is so much worse.
Carrey's not quite nailing Eggman but he's at least bringing the level of energy and eccentricity I'd expect. He'll probably be the best part of the movie considering Sonic is an abomination and nobody else leaves any kind of impression so far. Still don't know why he looks like that for most of the movie when they actually came up with a pretty decent look for him in the last shot though.

I really like how Mania characters like Knuckles are defined by their Genesis jingles but here in the modern setting we get Unknown From Me. What a nice touch.
Also Shadows walk of shame at the end there was hands down the best piece of characterization I've seen from him in the games since forever. God these are so GOOD

Yeah I didn’t find the humor off in the slightest. Everything seemed to hit pretty fine and came off pretty effective and paid off nicely. And if it was “off” it wasn’t that noticeable. Then again, as I said in the status, this seems like one of those clear instances of subjectiveness to the humor, so I don’t think either side will be convinced either way.

    Bad
I've got no reason to believe Sonic Team are going to move on from their sloppy engine and worsening takes on the boost  gameplay style when Forces sold well enough despite mediocre reception. We'll see the same outdated models, bland art and shallow gameplay that's all spectacle with no substance. Forces did nothing if not prove that SEGA do not have any idea (or that they don't care) what their audience wants. There was no effort put into making it a solid game there; it was a cynical plea to almost every fraction of the split fanbase. Fans who liked the early-mid 2000s games got their "dark" story with lots of characters and edgey new villain, Classic fans got Classic Sonic to play as, modern fans got the boosting and then there was the avatar for the huge subset of fans who make their own characters and just the general popularity of personal expression in games these days (there is of course overlap between these groups). None of these features are close to being fleshed out, and particularly in the case of the boost and Classic gameplay styles, they took the already flawed gameplay of Generations and proceeded to make it worse. I don't believe that these were conscious changes made to improve the games that some people disagree on, but rather were the result of an inexperienced team with poor direction, poor vision and poor understanding of what they even wanted to achieve. The choice was to make a bunch of things that looked like they were what fans wanted, and they didn't go to any lengths to really deliver. The gameplay was phoned in and lazy.
Whatever Sonic Team try next, I don't think they'll be appealing to fans such as myself. They'll continue to go after thd lowest hanging fruit, rather than making a quality product that will appeal to a broad audience because requires more time and money (and the right talent).
I can't comment on the content of the game, like additional characters, story or even gameplay style. They might move on from the boost, I guess? But even if they do, I'm really sure they won't do it right. Lost World was a mess, as were the avatars and Classic Sonic in Forces. It'll be a low quality game.

I'm not sure what you're saying here.
Alright, I'm about to flip a table.

There's a significant difference between a compilation pack with a small game and an entire 12 Zone campaign with new features, Jango. I'm getting tired of the assumption that the rehashing of levels is something that Iizuka-san wanted but Whitehead and company didn't want; it's discouraging to know that a majority of people haven't considered that Sonic Mania would never have been as fully-featured if every Zone was original. While that might be considered the ideal situation to the more hardcore of Sonic fans, that is certainly not what the team had in mind; this was never stated, and and I'd love it if people dropped that presupposition.

Quite frankly, you should respect Iizuka-san for putting up with a seemingly endless barrage of mindless cries for Sonic Adventure 3 and the vitriol for supporting the decision to use familiar locations and iconography from when the series was at it's most popular as if he's a nasty villain trying to sabotage the franchise, as opposed to waiting for him to cater to whatever concept you've canonized as the "right" direction for the series as most Sonic fanboys tend to do. There's biting the hand that feeds you, then there's disrespect. Do you want to pin blame on someone? Stop turning one single person into a bogey-man and take the time and effort to research on who's working in what area of each game, and you might come to find that it's not as black-and-white as blaming the person at the top of the pyramid; and even Iizuka-san has to answer to someone, but no one seems to think beyond Sonic Team when it comes to these thought experiments.

His ambiguity of Mania's success has less to do regarding his faith in the concept or the team, and moreso on whether or not there was a demand for such a product, and because Sega had never hired a bunch of fans to make a game before to this extent. Of course he'd be a little nervous, especially after outsourcing things to Big Red Button. It's a miracle that Mania got the greenlight after Sonic Boom. Lastly, I'm not sure why you're bringing Sonic Forces into the discussion as if it's helping your point, which from my current comprehension seems to boil down to "I hate Iizuka because he doesn't make what I want," so pardon me if I'm having a difficult time seeing your perspective.
I'm not going to participate in the shaming and disrespect of one man when he's not responsible for everything that's gone wrong with the franchise, as if his positive influence and consistency behind the brand hasn't been part and parcel to it's return to a generally positive critical acclaim since 2010, even after Boom happened. I don't care for Colors, for example, but I can't deny the influence it's had in bringing the Sonic brand into a better place regarding it's perception by the general public. And so this continues with games like Mania, where only pockets of biased Sonic fanboys with an axe to grind care that many of the levels are based off of places they've been before.
Game design is a complicated, misunderstood and difficult industry to participate in, and after befriending people in the industry and listening to their stories and frustrations, I'll never complain about the way these things turn out, the way people like you do, ever again, because it's a complicated galaxy of people from different backgrounds, opinions, talents coming together to create a product that may never turn out the way they envisioned. Most Sonic fans have no idea what Sonic Mania's development process was like, even when we have a smorgasbord of interviews and accounts from people in the community to give us intel on the matter.

I just want a guard and dodge that doesn’t feel two decades old and lag a near second after pressing the button. This is a post Bayonetta/ currently DMC5 world. I know Kh3 isn't necessarily cut from the same cloth but those kinds of improvements would dramatically improve the kinda sluggish feeling gameplay. Also axe attraction flows.
Wanna go back since I haven't touched it since beating it. Just been to many games in my backlog that I wanna get through.

Shantae is more cute then sexy to me as a hot blooded hetero so I have no problem with the art direction myself. HGH was a fun game but I agree it was a step down from PC gameplay wise so hopefully Shantae 5 can give us that happy medium of gameplay styles. Looking forward to it

I think it's perfectly fine to be uncomfortable with Shantae's design choices. Wayforward leans on the same body type for most of their characters and puts them in scenarios where they wear skimpy outfits often enough to raise an eyebrow.
I can only speak from having played Pirates Curse but it came off as sort of mild to me in a way that a lot of anime games don't. The designs always felt like they suited who the characters were in a way that I can't say about Xenoblade 2. There aren't any obvious male self insert characters drooling over the girls like...Xenoblade 2. That might be why it just comes off as "cute" or playful to some and not creepy. They're also written as characters with personalities and agency first and not either as goals for male characters or just a laundry list of personality traits guys who play games like. I've played enough "anime games" to see the ugliest of this stuff though so maybe I'm just desensitized but they come off as a bunch of characters that just...dress in a way that suits them. It's a  low bar to clear but you'd be surprised how many games can't do it.

HGH's problem was that the Kickstarter promised a lot extraneous features and so WF were committed to fulfilling them and had to allocate budget to do so.
I enjoyed HGH but in a way I view it as a necessary evil now that we're getting a new Shantae installment that will make use of the previous game's HD spritesets, which were made possible thanks to the Kickstarter, in a game that will hopefully hearken back to the Metroidvania quality of the previous games. The success of HGH should pave the way to better future games, and I trust WF to understand the criticisms made against HGH and learn from its problems. It's a fantastically well-made game that deserves certain praise for the effort and care put into it, whose biggest shortcoming was a wide scope of side dishes that made the main course suffer.

Soniman reacted to GentlemanX in Dragon Ball (Warning: Untagged Spoilers)
I brought up Chiaotzu because after the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai he was essentially an accessory to Tenshinhan's character. In his initial arc, Chiaotzu was quirky, got on Krillin's nerves, was dumb, was morally conflicted by what his friend wanted and what his master wanted, and had a somewhat unique move set and design (even if the Dodonpa was mainly there to introduce the connection to Taopaipai).
After that arc though? He helps Tenshinhan find Dragon Balls, dies doing what Tenshinhan asks him to do, gets hurt off screen to motivate Tenshinhan, dies again to protect Tenshinhan, and worries about Tenshinhan fighting Cell. The closest he gets to being his own character is making the trip down Serpent Road with the others.
Kale is distinct in that a lot of her actions during the Tournament of Power focus on her learning about and controlling her power, but it all centers around pleasing or keeping Caulifla to herself. I just don't find that interesting for a character that has the potential to become reoccurring, because it connects her too much to Caulifla and limits what she can do.
Now, if she changes substantially that could work. And if she only appears in this arc and she doesn't get revisited often, then this being her story is fine. But I worry this is their introduction arc and that we can expect to see more of them and this is just her one schtick. I don't need her to be Caulifla's cheerleader/damsel in distress until she gets jealous - that's not interesting to me.
Again I don't roll my eyes or anything when she's on screen, I just wish she had more agency.

Soniman reacted to Wraith in Dragon Ball (Warning: Untagged Spoilers)
I don't think whether or not she trades one liners with other characters is what makes her one note. I think this discussion is both putting too much emphasis on that and kind of giving Dragon Ball's characters too much credit. They're all pretty simple.

For me I just wanted more personal development from Kale before her personality got buried by Kefla. I thought the angle they had was good even if directly tying her to Broly was pretty lazy. I like the idea of a Saiyan who doesn't like to fight and a pair of Saiyans who have a strong bond that they bring into battle instead of constantly trying to one-up each-other. It might have been grounds enough for Goku and Vegeta to reconsider some things...had Goku not been able to easily dunk them off solo.

They just weren't the focus of the arc, which was a letdown because most of the characters the actual arc wanted to focus on were far less interesting.
