  1. So when nothing happens tomorrow beyond like 5 people's expectations being broken by some random 4chan dude's nonsense, can we go back to wondering when Sonic Rift is going to come out or are we still expecting the Sonic Adventure remake instead? The farthest back I can find the announcement trailer for Colors was May 25th, 2010. It may have come out a day or two before that somewhere else, but it came out in late may of that year regardless. I think Generations was the only game that had a teaser trailer released in April, the rest all came out in May or June, iirc. Sonic 4 ep1 and 2 were exceptions to this, I think. Ep2 was announced in January and ep1 was announced in February, correct me if I'm wrong. I feel like everyone worried or annoyed that Sega is taking too long to show us stuff have forgotten that the majority of Sonic game announcements happen in May, with a few happening in June. Next to nothing happens in April. Just because Sega revealed nothing for over 3 years doesn't mean their traditional yearly reveal timing has to have changed to compensate. It certainly would have been better if that were the case, but not necessarily expected. I was expecting the big info to come out in May from the start anyway, not earlier. If we get nothing in May, then ya something is almost definitely fucked.
  2. I'm not paying $35 for Sonic Colors alone lol no thank you

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

That’s for the limited edition. The standard from what people said is around $20

    2. Kuzu

BEtter than $60  for Skyward Sword

      Crow the BOOLET

Remember they're planning to increase the price of games to 70 dollars so finding things at a reasonable price anymore is rare.

    4. McGroose

      Oh right, that is $60.

      My condolences.

  3. If Nintendo ports Twilight Princess HD to the Switch, I'll buy a Switch.

Skyward sword gets way too much shit from people, the game is great and it's honestly only further convinced me that a Switch is worth buying, but I do like TP a little more and that is still gonna be the deal breaker. I still can't believe Skyward Sword is even getting a port, bullshit price aside.

    1. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

It really feels like they do these ports in cycles.

We got OoT in the GCN era, then WW with the Wii U, OoT (again) and Majora's Mask on the 3DS, then Twilight Princess also on the Wii U. Its just SS' time again I guess.

Do what you want with those ports ⁽ᵉˣᶜᵉᵖᵗ ᵗʰᵉ ˡᶦᵐᶦᵗᵉᵈ ᵖᵃʳᵗ ᵇᵘᵗ ᵗʰᵃᵗ'ˢ ᵘⁿᵃᵛᵒᶦᵈᵃᵇˡᵉ⁾, just don't let this whole Zelda celebration take up the majority of their E3 showing. This isn't any bias towards Zelda or anything, I personally don't want all that at the expense of variety in the show just like last weeks. Especially when a portion of it will inevitably be eaten up by Smash if both of the last fighters get revealed.

If they put all that buzz in a separate Direct like for Mario's 35th, give a big BOTW2 tease and than say "See you at E3 for first trailer", then we're clear.

  4. Shadow the Hedgehog vs Sonic 06 vs Secret Rings

Which would you rather play? Which would you never want to touch again with a 10 foot pole?

    1. PC the Hedgehog

      PC the Hedgehog

Secret Rings' motion gameplay absolutely ruined the game for me. I can at least eke out an inkling of fun out of Shadow and 06 due to their more "traditional" controls.

    2. Diogenes

i've never actually played '06 so i have some interest in playing through it, just one run so i can say i've done it, that kind of thing.

shth is bad but its gameplay is probably the least bad thing about it, it's mostly mediocre-bad rather than intolerable. i might burn out doing 10 more runs of westopolis and several other repeats just trying to get to the last story though.

i don't have entirely bad memories of satsr but i think it'd be the hardest one to go back to just because the controls are...that. i could probably get through the story at least.

  5. I heard an arguement that Nintendo has to stop all of its fan games because the insane popularity of their franchises means that Mario, Zelda, etc are at constant risk of becoming public domain due to how well known they are if too much fan material is made, while Sega doesnt stop the fan material like fangames because nobody gives a shit enough about Sonic, so he has little to no risk.

    1. Thigolf

I'm pretty sure that's not how public domain works.

The most likely argument is that Nintendo doesn't want their brand of kinda prestige brand to be tarnished by fangames that have middling to bad quality most of the time, plus remakes of games they might want to rerelease/remake themselves, cutting off potential sales. They want to protect their properties, for better or worse.

Sonic on the other hand...well, he probably needs every bit of good will he can get, and openly embracing fans will do that. If a few Nintendo fans stop buying Mario games because Nintendo took some fangames down, there'll be still millions of people putting 60 bucks on the counter day one. Sonic doesn't seem to do too hotly, so they can't risk pissing off fans. Sonic games also don't have the same prestige Mario games do, so there isn't much to protect, honestly.

I think that's what it comes down to. Keeping up brand image vs. keeping up goodwill with the couple fans still supporting you.

    2. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

I say it's more to do with maintaining their works' exclusivity over losing the rights. It's still Nintendo's charge to say whether their work is public domain or not, yeah? Why a work be forced to lose it's copyright because of too many works infringing it in the first place?

I feel the chances of a fan game getting Nintendo to react scale with how many news article it gets. "The Original Super Mario Bros. with 100 Players" in big bold letters, covered on a dozen websites is a rough synonym for "I'm an Easy Target, Shoot Me". With that said, there've been some cases where an infringing work had made a recovery after they were shot down and stopped being "relevent" to newssites, like the SM64 PC port and AM2R.

There's a whole website dedicated to Mario fangames, which AFAIK hasn't invited the wrath of Nintendo in the 15 years it's been up, versus the mass takedowns in places like Game Jolt. Even Super Mario Crossover or Mari0, PC remakes of the original SMB that had made the rounds and have their own wiki page, are still off the hook (maybe cause they're older; Nintendo would rather DMCA fan content before it reaches their level of popularity). Mario Glitchy 4 and Logan are non game examples, yet they go as far to have actual merch (although they limit Mario's presence there). So it may either be selectiveness, or it just takes a little more than you'd think to set Nintendo off.

Also, Mega Man fangames are technically in a similar spot to Sonic's.

    3. CrownSlayer’s Shadow

      CrownSlayer’s Shadow

Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

If I were to summarize, it has more to do with any profits and ownership of their works—fan fiction and games and art are perfectly fine as long as you don’t violate copyrights and try to franchise it yourself. That’s where shit hits the fan.

    4. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

I think part of it is that they realize that they won't be able to profit on fangames and if there's so much out there there would be no point into playing their own games. They're a company after all.

That and Japan is pretty strict on their copyright.

    5. PublicEnemy1

@Supah Berry eh, I don't think the SuperMarioLogan stuff holds up given that he very recently received a DMCA from Nintendo.

    5. Ryannumber1gamer

Tails Doll works better due to already having an unnatural uncanny valley feeling to him. The creepypasta is terrible, but the design in of itself gives off bad vibes.

.EXE is just cartoonishly edgy and over the top.

  7. With the exception of S3&K being my first game ever, I grew up with modern sonic and have far more nostalgia and memory for him. I grew up playing Unleashed, SADX, SA2, 06, etc and didn't start to play Sonic 1, 2, CD until those modern games. Yet for some reason I'm lately starting to prefer classic sonic over modern sonic in both design and other areas... significantly. Yet I can't figure out why.

    1. Indigo Rush

      Indigo Rush

The more simple design choices, narrative and easy to grasp but difficult to master gameplay might play a factor here. Classic Sonic's design is rooted in the more straightforward cartoon animal archetype which is timeless and tested; as for gameplay, they really set the bar high right out of the gate, and adapting the physics heavy platforming at fast speeds is sort of a nightmare to do in 3D. Modern Sonic by comparison is fairly inconsistent with it's presentation and gameplay, so that may also play a factor there.

I think Modern Sonic ought to be the main pillar of the franchise and I believe there's potential for a definitive 3D Sonic gameplay style, but we've yet to really reach that potential, and Classic Sonic games on the whole have already been catering to that, so it's a tough act to follow.

  8. Sonic Lost World vs Sonic Heroes: Which is better in your opinion and why?

    1. Jango

      Heroes, by like, a MILE.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Heroes. I don't hate half of it.

    3. Iko

Heroes without any doubt. And I don't even like Heroes that much, Lost World is just uninteresting... the Parkour could have been cool on paper though.

    4. Jango

TBH, it might just be my favorite 3D Sonic. Levels are great, music is great, art is great, story is fun, dialogue is great even with a lot of cornyness. There's some questionable padding (making you play the campaign 4 times, when the only team that offers something actually different is the Chaotix), enemies with life bars, and the Emerald hunt only on level 2 of every world. But overall, it's a great game.

    5. Ryannumber1gamer

Heroes - interesting locales, story doesn’t make me despise characters, balling soundtrack.

    6. azoo

Lost World is almost objectively a worse game and yet, much like 06, I find myself having much more fun playing it than I do playing Heroes. Heroes has a magical way of sucking basically all the joy out of me. lmao

    7. TheOcelot

Heroes is more of a slow painful death.

    8. Diogenes

lost world is weird and awkward but it tries interesting things and sometimes its worth it. heroes is almost as janky, but also way less interesting and tries to stretch out already-repetitive content that's hardly worth one playthrough into four.

    9. Milo

Heroes, easily. I'd say Heroes' presentation (stage locales, music) alone levels the entirety of Lost World. But even putting that aside, Heroes' gameplay is more straightforward/consistent and has level design that's more varied (granted, not by much). Even its "bag of chips half-filled with air" story somehow just has more going on with the stuff concerning its threads with Shadow, the Chaotix's "mystery client", and Metal Sonic pulling the strings than the half-"sitcom jokes"/half-"forced drama" mixed bag that Lost World tried.

With that said, Team Chaotix's campaign of unorthodox missions stoop pretty close to Lost World's roulette structure. But that's like, one-fourth of Heroes against Lost World's entire campaign.

And that's assuming we're comparing Heroes to the Wii U version. Lost World 3DS is pure garbage as far as I'm concerned, absolutely no contest there.

    10. Kuzu

I don't particularly like either game

    11. McGroose

      @KuzuFinally, the correct answer

    12. Speedi

Heroes is a cool idea that's executed pretty well accompanied by a fun/simple story with endearing character dynamics and a cool climax. Lost world's core gameplay has potential but the game is so fucking distracted with boring and weird gimmicks on top of a shit story worthy of Pontaff's Sonic legacy that I can't even make it through the first world without giving up.

    13. The Deleter

      The Deleter

      Do I have to pick?

    14. Kuzu

If you put a gun to my head, and I was forced to choose, I'd probably say Heroes...and only because I have some nostalgia for it, but I'd probably just rather get my brains blown out.

They both suffer from the usual problem of 3D Sonic games of beingly needlessly padded out while having confusing gameplay mechanics, and gimmicks.

If nothing else, I prefer Heroes` aesthetic at least, but that's about it.

    15. azoo

there are many things to call heroes but "executed pretty well" is maybe the last thing i would put on that list

    16. Harkofthewaa

Having only played Lost World 3DS, yeah, there's no comparing the two. Say what you will about Sonic Heroes, but at least it dosen't ask you to stand up and spin around like a jackass to get the chaos emeralds. Seriously, what was Dimps thinking? "I know! Let's make interesting special stages then tack on 360° gyro controls! On a system you take out in public!"

    17. The Deleter

      The Deleter

I will say Heroes doesn't have any half assed elements to it such as scoring, the animal capsules supposedly being a reward for exploration even though the amount earned is nothing, wisps that amount to nothing, and other gimmicks that felt useless. Everything the game had was used to the full extent and way past what was enjoyable lol, so if not "executed well", it was "executed fully" in comparison. Makes it feel like the more complete game out of the two honestly.

    18. Wraith

Lost world is jank but I get what it was going for. Sonic Heroes is conceptually a bad idea and then everything that can go wrong execution wise does.

  9. Finally, I can now get my 6th copy of Sonic 2 on GOG. My excitement is almost palpable.
  10. For all the talk about leaks like Sonic Rift and the Sonic Adventure remakes and all that stuff, you don't hear people talking about the other leaks that nobody cared about, the stuff that got no traction because only one person of 4chan saw it and replied with "shut the fuck up" and it faded away into obscurity. I am convinced the only reason 99% of people create these clearly fake leaks is so that they can get a bunch of youtubers to make 5-10 minute long videos about them speculating about whether or not it's BS while the "leaker" is smiling with the biggest shit-eating grin imaginable. It's a competition to see who can get the farthest with their trash, the fandom has become so thirsty for news that bullshit artists are competing amongst each other to see which fake leak can gain the most traction and make it to the top of people's interests and debates, because the fanbase eats it up. It's satisfying for these people to see people debate and ponder over their trolling. Notice how none of the previous prior to Sonic Prime's title announcement leaked out that title? Did a single leak reveal anything about Sonic Prime? No, of course not. Some did "leak" how a new Sonic show was in development, they all got the details wrong. Now all of them are mentioning Sonic Prime? It's all BS. They just use their imagination to add on to what we already know. When the next game ends up having their title revealed as "Sonic Tacos", then the same dudes are gonna write checklists of what to expect from "Sonic Tacos" and how all the other leaks were obvious BS while they're correct. Then you have minor things one can notice in leaks that clearly prove it completely wrong. The latest Sonic Rift leak said that his NDA mentioned nothing about telling people what the game was like, and that he playtested the game in America, all of which is absolutely ridiculous. It's all just so tiring, I wish people would stop paying attention to the obvious nonsense. Ya, this Sonic Unlimited one reeks, it's fake. Hopefully it gets nowhere too because this one is 101% trash lol.
  11. Someone says stupid bullshit, everyone ignores said stupid bullshit. Everyone wins except the dude who posted stupid bullshit. If he continues to post more stupid bullshit out of nowhere over and over again, just report him or something.
  12. Can we like fuckin move on How did this conversation about the future of Sonic the Hedgehog's future VA turn into a discussion about this of all things? The first people to respond to whoever started this should've just rolled their eyes and moved on, now look what you got out of it. Kudos to the people not fueling this shit fire and staying on topic. But ya, I'm cool if all the voice actors are replaced (best of luck of course to them finding future work in this economy), good enough of a job as they did, but I really, REALLY hope they do not kick out Mike Pollock. He is the Eggman, there is simply no debate. I wish Sega would just spill the beans on what's happening with him.
  13. I'm happy that I've never been a fan of Metroid (never played it, looks cool though) because if I was, I'd be pretty annoyed at this point at how much Nintendo is buttfucking their fans with that franchise.

    1. Blue Wisp

      Blue Wisp

Wait what what did they do now.

  14. If Ben Schwartz takes over as the new voice actor for Sonic, I'd definetely be happy with that. His performance in the Sonic movie is excellent and I'm sure he'd be fully capable of delivering future high quality voice acting in the games as well. I've always been really picky about what I think Sonics voice should be like. I think that Jason Griffith was the best modern Sonic voice actor, but he was really only good past Sonic 06 and even then I admit he was still a little flawed. Before 06, I just really wasnt a fan. Ryan Drummand was alright (not enough for me to keep the voice acting in English instead of switching to Japanese), but I never liked Roger as Sonic. I liked every single new actor they got for the other characters, but not really Sonic. I can appreciate and respect how much Roger gave to this franchise for the past decade, and he probably could've been more convincing to me if he didnt have to read such poorly written dialogue given to him, but I'm not exactly upset by this change in cast. I'm actually quite optimistic, I'm hoping whoever they get knew to voice Sonic, whether it be Schwartz or someone else, can voice the character in a way we all (or at least most of us) agree with is the perfect choice for Sonic. It's too early to say that Schwartz is my favorite voice actor for sonic, since all we've got from him is the first Sonic movie, but if he keeps it up, then he could definitely take that spot for me. Best of luck to Roger Craig Smith, who really is a terrific voice actor for the other characters he has portrayed, just not really Sonic, in my opinion.
  15. I'm considering making a topic about all the old and somewhat current sonic "leaks" and rumors that have happened throughout the Sonics history. Ofc people could talk about new rumors, but it would also be a type of mega thread of sorts where people could talk about all their favorite ridiculous and clearly false leaks from the past and what they thought of them, from any period in Sonics history they choose.

Would such a topic be against the forum rules?

    1. Jango

You have my support! I always go back to these stuff from time to time. The Sonic community came up with some hillarious leaks over the years.

    2. Graystripe2000

      I’d be down for that.

    3. Sonictrainer

Sure. I thought about doing that but the only leaks I could of at the time were for Sonic Unleashed and I didn't feel like doing the research...

    4. Zaysho

Sounds fine to me. The mega thread ban was more for single games coming out to spread out news and hopefully make people fight less in-between.

    5. Snowragnarok

I would love it! Remember “Sonic Dimensions”?

  16. What are some things we didnt know about the Sonic 1 beta that we discovered from the recently released prototype? It looks very similar to the mockups made years ago, so I'm wondering if I missed something

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

We actually knew most of what this beta has to show already. It terms of Sonic 1's development, it's from relatively late on (meaning that most concepts had been cemented already and the engine was close to completion).

Green Hill and Marble are mostly similar to their final versions. Spring Yard (Sparkling) act 1 is too, but the rest of the acts are WIP. There are unused level chunks in Green Hill that resemble parts of the 8bit version. The unused tiles still exist in the final game, but in this beta it's clear exactly how they were supposed to be used.

Labyrinth act 1 lines up with what we'd seen previously in beta screenshots too, but is very incomplete as it lacks any objects, water and only has a single functioning act instead of four (Scrap Brain 3 occupies the slot for Labyrinth 4 in the final game). What's really interesting here is that not only is all the water missing, but it seems that at this point they didn't even know how they were going to implement it. There are several rooms throughout the level that have a solid brick wall pattern, and many of these line up with where bubbles are found in the final game. It would appear that, early on at least, the developers planned to have air-pocket rooms throughout the zone instead of bubbles. This wasn't possible in the end due to the way that water and palettes work. It's really interesting to see how that idea developed.

Starlight recieved a slight but very significant overhaul visually. In this beta, it has much more of a construction-site appearance with iron girders and unfinished structures making up the level. The final game replaces these tiles with simpler ones. Some of the unused graphics in the final game, such as flashing lights on top of the loops, are used in the beta. What's most interesting perhaps is how much beta Starlight happens to resemble Sky Base from S1 8bit. It's possible that Sky Base and Starlight shared the same origins in concept, and was changed late on in development in one version or the other.

The game's engine is still incomplete. Sonic sticks to ceilings when jumping for example and the camera movements are very different to the final build. Compared to beta versions of S2, CD and S3, S1 here is the first time we've seen the developing a Sonic game entirely from scratch. They're figuring out how everything works without a framework to base it on. And that's so cool, don't you think? We know that Green Hill underwent countless revisions and was worked on pretty much exclusively for six months whilst they built the engine, art etc and this Green Hill in this beta closely resembles the final game. So if any earlier versions even exist anymore, they'll probably just have less content and more differences in Green Hill and the engine.

    2. Plumbers_Helper

Almost everything about the beta has been documented on The Cutting Room Floor if you're interested.

The most interesting new thing learned from the beta to me are the sprites for an unused boss...

...which reminds me of the boss sprites for the unused "R2" from Sonic CD.

  17. Oh goodie, 4chan rumors again When the shit are we gonna get some actual news because I'm not hyped for anything whatsoever, I'm expecting a slightly above mediocre attempt by Sega to redeem themselves with Forces that theyll still magically bastardize then scratch their heads wondering how they messed up again. Or was putting us in an info void supposed to get me excited? I'm sure when we finally get a teaser trailer of sonic running forward 3 months before the game comes out, we all say that the wait was definetely worth it. Please Sega I love you with nearly every other IP you own but I've come to realize guys are really starting to suck with sonic the hedgehog as far as the games are concerned, just give me a PC port of unleashed so I can enjoy 3D sonic again cause Generations has become boring and Forces just sucked. Actually, larry was definetely right on one thing while he was larping on 4chan, there will almost definetely be a sonic mega collection type game, and its gonna be so disappointing. People have been asking it for years, sega will listen and screw it up. All I want is unleashed, I know I'm not gonna get it. The pack will probably have sonic 1, 2, 3(not s3&k), sadx, sa2 and heroes and colors. Probably not even colors. The end. The absolute safe bets, the games you can already get for 1-2 bucks each already and can play on a toaster with any cpu in it. Apologies for the bleak post but seeing another magical 4chan leak reveal everything after coincidentally just a few minutes earlier having read another sonic 4chan leak just kinda made me realize how dumb this situation is. We are in an absolute void in this franchise with only a single good (2D) game in the past 10 years on a mountain of subpar quality content. The only info we get are 4chan leaks, announcements of possible announcements and annoying riddles and puzzles on twitter. I've lost nearly all interest I've had in this franchise the past year and a half. Oh and if we're not getting another Mania-type game either this anniversary or the next few years after then Sega really doesnt even deserve this franchise anymore. Feel free to call me out for anything here or how I'm not giving sega a fair chance or something like that. I'll listen, but you'd really have try hard to convince me to go lighter on sega here. I will rescind all criticisms when I see undeniable proof the next game will actually be worth the full price and not something that convinces me that Sonic would be better off as anything but a video game at this point.
  18. I remember having a Sonic dream the night before we got the mania gameplay trailer and the Forces teaser trailer. I dreamed I was playing a sonic game that looked like a mix between Sonic robo blast 2 and Sonic R and that the level was some type of carnival night style setting. I was playing as 3D classic sonic trying to figure out how to get on with the level, I think I was stuck somewhere. I dont remember anything else specific about that dream Got me hoping we'd get a teaser trailer about a cool classic sonic 3D style game the next day... well I was half right

      What happens January 20th?

    2. McGroose

      Inauguration Day.

  21. All these sonic forces mods have me thinking the unthinkable that I might be willing to spend an entire $5 on the game on discount just to experience them

I reaaaaally dont wanna give them a cent for this game, getting the ps4 version for free was enough

  22. There's no way they just forgot about that number in there out of all the other stuff they had to edit out of the original stock image.
  23. So the idea was that Forces had about a year of actual development in that 3-4 year window after Lost World because 2-3 of those years were spent on the Hedgehog Engine 2 and concept development, right? Or something like that?

How much time did Unleash have for for actual in-game development? It came out 2 years after Sonic 06. How much time went into the Hedgehog engine 1 and concept development during that time period?

I'm guessing that I'm overlooking a few things here

    1. Milo

The Hedgehog Engine actually started production before Unleashed. It started development back in 2005, back when Sonic 2006 was still in development.

As for Forces, the report goes that one year was spent developing the Hedgehog Engine 2, then the next two years were conceptual development/prototyping. These three years were handled by director/lead designer Kishimoto and a small team. The fourth and final year of development was when the game entered full production.

    2. McGroose

So how much time did Unleash have for it's in-game production then? Did they only start beginning production of Unleashed once the Hedgehog Engine was done, so around late 06 to early 07?

    3. Milo

@McGroose Late response, but I believe the Hedgehog Engine was still being developed in tandem with Unleashed, which started production after Sonic 2006's release.

  24. Forces: 6.5/10 (best I could give it. This game clearly is not "finished")

Lost World: 7.5/10 (this game is underrated, IMO. The controls are the hardest part to get down, and some stages are either boring or just flat out suck.)

Colors: 8/10 (Again, best I could give it. I think Colors is a little overrated, probably cause it's the best 3D Sonic's had for a while in many people's opinion, but it's solid.)

Unleashed: 8.5/10 (prob my favorite 3D Sonic, got the boost formula just right. It pushed the 360/PS3 to it's limits sometimes and it's atmosphere is perfect.)

Generations: 8.5/10 (Classic is definitely the weaker half, good game overall tho. Level selection was bad, the plot implementation in the game was obviously rushed.)

nah you're being too generous on forces, even for my standards. it legit deserves a 5 dude.

If I were to rate them Sonic Colors would probably get a 6 and Forces would get like a 4, maybe worse. Colors and Unleashed I mostly agree with.
