Mark1 reacted to Badnik Mechanic in Sonic Forces Super Sonic DLC Will Be Free Forever
It would have had to have been approved by SOJ, hence why it took a lot of work. SOA probably had to speak to people they don't normally talk to in SOJ which is always slow.
Had it been an SOA decision, probably taken 10 min.
Had it been an SOE decision, it would now cost an extra £1 and have Denuvo added to it.

Mark1 got a reaction from Alienrun in Super Sonic DLC for Forces out Dec 22 - €1.99, Free Until Jan 23
So Sega has hidden the code somewhere in the game, to be unlocked by buying Chaos Emeralds?
People. This sort of act is up there with the cheapest of tricks gaming companies can pull off.
EA can fuck off. Capcom can fuck off. And certainly Sega can do the same.

Mark1 reacted to Sega DogTagz in Sonic Forces biggest flaw is ignoring it's own plot.
Just gonna poke at some of those... just cause I've got nothing better to be doing right now
Episode Shadow counts as in-game doesn't it? In the Eggman's facility stage, it offers an explanation as to why he hired a team of mercs, what they were guarding and introduced Jackal boy as a prideful soldier of fortune. There is enough backstory to label all the important facts here. Would have been nice to have more, but I wouldn't call it almost zero. Its not like something went left unexplained leaving behind a plot hole.

I agree with you here, but anyone who expected anything else was flat out kidding themselves. There was no way Sonic Team was going to let the player go for any extended amount of time minus what everyone came to forces to do. It was billed as the next big Modern Sonic game. You can't bench the protagonist and not expect some kind of revolt.

Again I agree, but you might be stretching this one a bit far too.
The problem here is that a lot of the generic level tropes in Sonic games do play into what Forces was trying to accomplish. Stages designed like an Eggman base (such as Adventures Hot Shelter or 06's Aquatic Base) would fit right at home in Forces, because... well Eggman has bases. So stages like Chemical Plant, Death Egg and the ones that take place around the Imperial Tower fit right in with no complaints. They are base stages and fit the theme of any Sonic game, Forces included.
So that leaves Green Hill - which is dominated by an Eggman weapons facility that dedicates an entire level to infiltrating. Crisis City Park Avenue which is an active warzone. Mystic Forest which is under constant bombardment by Eggman's forces and Metropolis which actually has Infinite appear mid level to defend.
While its not as consistent as you may like (Classic Sonic's jaunt through the Forest Casino for example seems devoid of a lot of that same carnage) Each area does have at least 1 level devoted to showing how the larger conflict is impacting the landscape. It would have been nice to see more of Eggman's mug plastered all over the places he's conquered, and not doing so was a missed opportunity, but lets not pretend like this was some Sonic-y world untouched by Eggman either. The mystic forest was on fire. I think its a safe bet that the desertification of GHZ had something to do with that Pyramid base. Park Avenue was shelled and evacuated. His chief enforcer was despatched to defend Metropolis. Every non-base stage had clearly been touched by a global conquest.

Eggman made some pretty significant land grabs in GHZ. Much of that space was mechanized, so that is at least on visual indicator of his increased influence. Metropolis was also spoken of as "His" city.

If the illusions were just as strong as the real thing, how did an army featuring no less than 100 Shadow's not steamroll over a tidal wave of rookies with white wispons? Shoot, Sonic and co. should never have made it past the first wave to trash talk with Infinite. That many Shadow's and Metal Sonic's should have ripped them to pieces.
sorry... this is neither here nor there lol

Here I disagree. The level design pretty clearly indicates what is going on in the story. Stages start and end at ques dictated by the story itself. Avatar's Prison hall stage starts in the Death Egg and leads you right down to a section similar to the cells Sonic was being held in. Avi's chemical plant stage takes you from the outskirts of the facility to the launch pad. Moderns Chemical Plant skirts the outskirts and then takes you inside to the heart of the facilities computer room. Modern's Mortor Canyon runs you in a giant loop and ends at the base of Eggmans endgame structure. The Tag levels take you right inside those structures (be it the Iron Tower or the Arsenal Pyramid).
While not as fantastic as say, Unleahsed's sense of progression, Forces does take que's from its story in how it builds its levels and how you advance through them. Not sure how you could come to any other conclusion.

Mark1 reacted to Blue Blood in Bayonetta 3! (Coming Exclusive to Switch)
To make it open to all platforms, they would probably have to cut all Bayonetta related ties to Nintendo. The first game got a PC port relatively recently, but it's unlikely that that will happen for the sequel because of Nintendo's involvement (even if all the Nintendo themed content was removed or replaced). And this just a guess, but part of the agreement between Nintendo and SEGA could be that new Bayonetta releases remain Nintendo exclusive on consoles for the time being, which would prevent ports of the first game to XB1 and PS4.
It's so so so awesome that Nintendo is able to support Bayonetta. Firstly because Nintendo is a company that I trust to deliver quality work fair treatment of their developers and fans, and secondly because it's a great niche that can be nurtured properly with the interest of a first party.

+The music is pretty decent. As are the graphics.
+Storyline is better than I thought, but still not amazing.
+Infinite is a decent new character. Eggman is a great villain.
-Level design ranges from pretty average to terrible. Nothing substantial or exciting. Just boring.
-Tails has been ruined by inconsistent characterisation again.
-No Shadow or Chaos boss fight.
Its going to be a mixed bag here and all across the fan base. Sonic Team need to take a break from the series and understand why Sonic is considered fun.
Its not a bad game like Shadow the Hedgehog or ‘06. But it’s disappointingly not up to the more recent games like Colours or Generations.

Mark1 reacted to Blue Blood in Nakamura: Sonic Forces was intentionally designed for you to boost to the end of the level
There's actually nothing inherently wrong with this. It applies to the majority of Unleashed, Generations and Colours as well, and the very point of the boost system being implemented the way that it has been for the past 9 years is so that you can almost all of the time. Forces' level and control design is bad because they require that you do little more than press boost a lot of the time, but the levels accommodating near-constant boosting doesn't mean that they have to be bad.

Mark1 reacted to Diogenes in Sanic T-Shirt DLC
Regarding the shirt itself, I actually love the idea of there being a cheap looking bootleg Sonic shirt. If you're going to have a bunch of goofy dressup options, stuff like that fits right in. My only complaint is that I kinda wish they came up with their own Sanic instead of using the well-known meme, but it still doesn't really bother me.
As far as memes in general...it's a hard thing to do successfully because so many memes have such a short shelf life. Some memes can run out their lifetime in the time it takes a game to go from development to being on the shelves, and if not by then, they're bound to have gone stale if the player comes back to the game a year or something later. It's probably possible to pull off, but the risks are high and the benefits are low, so there's not much value in pursuing it. As far as memes and games go the better option is to make your game memorable and quotable enough that people will make memes from your game (though even then your focus should be on writing things to serve the game as a whole, and not writing things to try to make them into memes).

Mark1 reacted to Sean in Is Mania's "philosophy" of speed and player control worse than the classics'?
I think Mania feels different from the classics because it took all the good stuff from them and condensed them into a single game. I believe it's better designed than any classic game, even though I would still rank S3K higher than it due to personal preference.
Sonic 2 is actually one of my least liked Sonic games so I can't say I agree on that part; I consider its design to be overly punishing (not dissimilar to the Advance games' design) and there are way too many not-fun parts of that game for me even when I am going fast. This is coming from someone who thinks Sonic 1 is more brilliant than most people give it credit for and I actually don't mind Marble or Labyrinth Zones at all.

Who felt it was ok to have lines involving Sonic getting tortured? Or Tails ‘losing’ it? Or civilians losing their lives? In a family friendly platformer game?
This may be perceived as an exaggeration to some, but I really don’t remember this in any of the previous “darker” Sonic games. They were ridiculous for their own content, but this is also wrong to put in.
Sonic’s positive attitude makes this slightly more tolerable. Eggman also deserves credit for not, yet again, being perceived as incompetent.

What did Sega expect this game to be with just one year of programming development?
This brings me back to that time when they announced Project Sonic 2017 was in development before the 25th anniversary event. Was hoping they meant it was currently a thing happening in Sega - not that they started the game development then lol.

Mark1 got a reaction from Alienrun in Sonic Forces may have destroyed the series storyline
    Long story short: lazy writing.
I'd say they more thank likely retconned the time travel part of the story - not the interactions between Classic and Modern characters.
This can be applied to any game bar Mania and Sonic 4. Also, remember the "events" regarding the moon after Sonic Adventure 2.
    This line doesn't make sense?
Lost World did this before Forces. Bad back then, bad now.

    https://www.famitsu.com/news/201711/11145786.html
According to this (and Google Translate, which actually is translating this pretty well!), Sonic Team started basic engine and technological development of Forces about 4 years ago (mainly Hedgehog Engine 2 I'm assuming), with Forces' going through what I'm assuming was a concept phase a year after that, but the actual full-scale production of Sonic Forces began around last year.
So instead of going the Unleashed route of 1.5 years of Hedgehog Engine development and 1.5 years of game development, they went through 3 years of Hedgehog Engine 2 development and decided to spend only 1 year of actual game development.
    So tl;dr timeline from this:
2013 - Sonic Team begins Hedgehog Engine 2 development
2014-2016 - Sonic Forces concept development with Nakamura's small team
2016-2017 - Actual Sonic Forces game development

Mark1 got a reaction from Milo in What is so bad about Forces gameplay?
It’s not the fact it is glitchy. It’s more that it shows no love and care, by a team of people with no previous experience. On a formula which has had very little improved upon since its creation in Unleashed. Plus the over reliance on 2D too.
The classic gameplay is a downgrade compared to Generations - which wasn’t a perfect emulation of the older formula, the game was also released shortly after a true sequel to the original trilogy made by a group of fans.
The Avatar gameplay isn’t anything special either.

Mark1 reacted to LukA8 in Sonic Forces Reviews Thread
Let's clear something up here because I usually like to follow first-week numbers before losing interest - the #5 debut compared to Generations' #10 is not nearly as great as it might seem. You've got to consider:
    - Generations released on a Friday and only had 2 days of sales, yet still reached the Top 10. Forces released on a Tuesday with an already broken street day, so it had at least almost a full week of sales.
    - Generations' #10 positions accounted for the PS3 and Xbox 360 version (the 3DS version didn't come out till about a month later and Steam doesn't count for the charts), while Forces is available on three consoles (and people in the UK actually seem to buy the Xbox One).
    - On the individual UK chart, Forces entered at 14 (PS4), 15 (Switch) and 19, respectively, while Generations entered at 14 and 21. If the 3DS had been launched at the same date and on a Tuesday as well, then Gens would have easily entered at around #3 in the combined chart. For comparison, Mario Odyssey has climbed to #5 in this week's individual chart, so it easily outsold all three versions of Forces, only that Odyssey is in its third week and Forces has just made its debut.
So yeah, while this debut is definitely better compared to games such as Lost World, it's not really an indication of how Forces will do in long-term sales. I've followed the Amazon charts in various countries and some other online stores, and the UK is definitely the large market Forces has performed best in. No surprise here, Mania apparently de-facto topped the chart with only its digital sales, after all. It has kind of begun free-falling on the Amazon charts, though (yesterday: all versions in Top 20, today: two of three out of Top 60), so keep a close eye on next week's performance.
For other countries, Forces is kind of bombing on Amazon USA's video game & PC charts (Switch version holding onto dear life on #98, PS4 at about #400 and Xbox One at #600), about the same for Canada and Japan (below #200 for PS4, #500 for Switch and like #7000 on Xbox One rofl; sold through 30% of its first-day shipment, as large or small that may have been), it's at about #200 for PS4 and Switch as well as #600 on Xbox One in Germany/Austria/Switzerland (with price cut, by the way) and doing mixed in France (Switch at #33, Ps4 at #400 and Xbox at #1000) and Spain (about #150 for PS4/Switch, Xbox One at below #1100)
I'm gonna stop tracking it now, but combined with the abysmal Steam sales, I think none of us have to worry that Sega is not getting the right message from this. Not that it was necessary to list all the numbers for that, the biggest proof we have is the Sonic game budgets' getting lower with each game to the point where Forces reuses about 70% of assets from older games. If they're smart (which they are usually not), Sega will market the next Mania title as an AAA...okay, well.. AA title with physical release to reach its sales potential, which is definitely higher than the interest for Modern games right now. If they're being typical Sega, then we will get a 2D Sonic developed by Sonic Team, though.
