I'd say the better question is what isn't wrong with it. To put it simply, the physics are wonky, the controls are janky, and the level design is bad.

I really didn’t have a problem with simplistic stories found in Colours/Generations.
They felt closer to a less complicated style found in the Classic trilogy/Mania; as well as a breath of fresh air from complex messes with plot holes like Sonic ‘06, Shadow the Hedgehog and even Adventure 2 (better than the other two mentioned though)
The main problem with them was the poor/cringeworthy scripts they gave the voice actors. I don’t get who’s more at fault here.
Forces had a more serious story, but it felt like a desperate attempt to please different fan bases, forgetting some of the progress or plot points of previous games. Tails “losing it” (why would you write this sort of shit in a Sonic game btw?) is a complete opposite effect of what he went through when he was trying to not depend on Sonic anymore. That was good, this just made it seem inconsistent with a lack of thought out into it.
(Man I really hope the new team are given the proper time to shine and not be forced to create stuff like this again).
The comics have been amazing, far better portrayal of showing a better story. Missed opportunity. Let’s see what the Shadow DLC brings.

I'm going to echo opinions that seeing this game achieve a 5/10 in its first proper review is satisfying. But frankly, it's the content of this review and the rest to come that are of the most concern to me.
The core gameplay is primarily 2D, which is a problem itself but also is worse that Mania in every way from layouts to control. The 3D sections tend to be linear boost fests that are somehow put to shame by its predecessors. We've also ended up with yet another nonsense story that leaves the player to deal with a great deal of confusion. And really, the use of other characters in the story isn't the best. Set pieces in the levels might look nice, but they amount to very little and the everyone is often talking about things that we never even see nor experience. Plus it's a really strange and very unfitting tone that Sonic Team went for; Why on earth did they choose to make this story about a war? I hope that other reviews will pick up on all of these, particularly the gameplay.
One thing that does worry me is the avatar. I loathe the concept of a custom character being involved in the story of a Sonic game. Their gameplay isn't fun here either. But I'm already prepared to see the customisation being praised as one of the high points.
Middling scores are one thing, but to really send a message to SEGA about what's wrong with Forces, this game has to sell poorly and be criticised for the right reasons. If all we get  "Sonic friends won't shut up and Sonic doesn't need a story, but the graphics are good and the gameplay is very fast", then things are hardly going to improve. Mania was praised for all the right reasons and duly criticised for being yet another trip down memory lane, so I hope the same will be the case for Forces. There's a lot less to praise in Forces and a lot more to criticise.

For those rubbing against the Polygon review score and those celebrating with it, I think it's just clear that a majority of people are not happy with the direction Forces has taken the series, and having a review clearly reflect on those frustrating issues is satisfying to hear. That said, I think there's plenty of evidence of bad level/game design, rigid controls, and other core elements that a day-one patch is not going to alleviate and buff a review score, I'm sorry. I think the real split is on the story direction and tone, and possibly just boost gameplay in general, and that's fine if it's your thing (or not whatever). However, I still think a majority of people are not into an edgier sonic plot (at least in this sense) and tire of the Unleashed/Gens gameplay, especially when the latter here seems to be the least polished we've seen of this gameplay style. Seeing a 5/10 is pretty justifiable I believe, though that doesn't mean it's impossible to enjoy for certain fans.
Personally, I think the disappointment here is a lack of innovation in gameplay. I can swallow the weird story time traveling whatevers, miscellaneous cast like a giant jar of jellybeans, and other Sonic quirks, but when the core game manages to feel like a more stale version of something introduced 10 years ago and carried ever since, it's disheartening. It's drawing parallels to Sonic 4 and the original trilogy to me, whereas the game feels like a shallow husk of something we've had before, despite the shiny coat of paint. The avatar is hardly an innovation gameplay wise, at least as its executed in Forces anyway. What I'm mainly looking at is our actual hero Sonic, and if this game gains anything for the next Sonic game. The only thing I'm finding is proof that modern boost Sonic is an awfully stale roller coaster ride we've gone on too many times. Classic Sonic has well overstayed his welcome as a side gimmick, and I'm afraid the avatar will be a one trick pony that won't get the same wow-factor the next time around.
Again that's my personal view on the game as it nears release, and probably the first core Sonic game I won't be picking up, at least not right away and possibly to experience a game I can moreover analyze more rather than simply enjoy it. While it'd be great for Sonic Team and Sega and everyone else involved to take 2017 as a crucial point to review where Sonic should go next, I'm skeptical. But to most fans (of games in general) it'll probably remain a marker in the franchise of an underdog story between a poorly received AAA title and a critically acclaimed official fangame.
That all said, I really do sincerely hope everyone getting this game can find things they enjoy about it.

The review itself doesn’t feel finished, but agree with everything said. This is completely opposite of what happened with Unleashed’s IGN review.
Surprised to see Classic Sonic’s gameplay wasn’t mentioned much at all in it. Was mainly focused on Modern Sonic/Avatar’s gameplay styles and the tone of story.
It isn’t harsh, all the positive and negative points are fair and very true based on everything shown.

Disagree. Megaman games were good, and Capcom just stopped making them.
Sonic games do have hope on the 2D front at least, if we can keep getting games of Mania's quality. I wouldn't expect anything good from Sonic Team themselves, at least not until a massive restructuring of the company takes place.

I'm glad the game got rightfully blasted for its faults by Polygon, and hope the consensus of other reviewers is similar.
Sonic Team needs  some serious tough love if they're to improve. That means bad games get bad reviews and - more importantly - bad sales. So yes, I do hope Forces bombs, both critically and commercially - not because I hate Sonic, but because Sonic can't get better if people keep coddling Sonic Team and they're never forced to improve their own incredibly low standards of quality.
Bring on the bad reviews, I say. Let this be a mistake Sonic Team will never forget.

I actually like the Omega bit enough as it is. Tails is quite obviously thrown off his game by Sonic's "death" and this is one of the ways it manifests. On its own it doesn't make him weak or a wimp or whatever, just that he has normal human weaknesses and he isn't always an omnipotent science wizard.

Well not anymore, sure. Not after being beaten out of shape for two decades.
But maybe a consistent tone is something the series should look into getting back.

Mark1 got a reaction from kalion in Euro Gamer Interview Nakamura on Forces, Mania and the Future of Sonic
See if this was discussed back after the Dreamcast games, I’d have disagreed with @Diogenes. But the inconsistency of later games, especially from a story perspective where everything seems to be getting retconned in favour of a new game, shows Sega’s incompetence at good lore.
And everything seems complicated, especially following Forces. Now, make no mistake while I do appreciate some of the character designs in the modern world (especially Sonic himself), I cannot see how they can continue having the franchise make more sense yet keep everything as it is.
Everything is becoming more drab and uninteresting following Sonic Team’s own lack of care shown in Forces.
3D Sonic is better off taking a hiatus (not like what happened between Lost World and Forces - I mean a proper break to make 3D Sonic interesting and fun again) or sent to a team who are actually passionate and know what they’re doing. I really hate to compare to 3D Mario...but the level of enjoyment made creating the latest game is there. It wasn’t in Forces. It literally felt like a ‘forced’ project. Difference is night and day.
It’d be nice to see ‘Modern’ Sonic games not be a laughing stock anymore. But I can’t see that changing anytime soon if we still have the current Sega/ST.
