The bit in the new Beauty and the Beast with the snowball made me laugh really hard for some reason

I'm curious how Sonic X was received in Japan. The English version is super dumb but I wonder how much of it was 4Kids' fault and if the Japanese version was any better. Granted the terrible new human characters were still there so I guess it can't be THAT different.
-
-
My friend and I were watching the 4Kids version a few weeks ago, just a few eps selected at random. Obviously it's a bad show, but like many 4Kids shows it's pretty fun to watch for all the wrong reasons.
Also we watched a bunch of Yu Gi Oh beforehand, and comparatively Sonic X is a goddamn masterpiece so I felt like being nicer to it.

While X is pretty bad nowadays, when watching it again I could at least see why I liked it as a kid. For all its terrible qualities it still at least tried to have a bit of stakes and adventure from time to time. The idea of Sonic having stories with arcs and huge space-faring journeys and whatnot is pretty appealing to kid-me, and I could see that sort of thing working pretty well in the hands of better writers and directors.

JP is waaay better on an audio front, as well as the lack of censorship not ruining some of the more dramatic moments.
At it's best, it's a relatively-faithful animated imitation of the games. At it's worst, it's a frustratingly stupid anime about characters completely unrelated to Sonic.
As with 06, Chronicles and Chaotix, most of it's original ideas (that is to say the space arc and nothing else) are poorly executed but could be put to good use as plot elements should a different, more talented team put in charge.
I'd still love to see a full anime Sonic series that doesn't have extra useless humans crowding the spotlight and stealing screentime I could be seeing Eggman during, and it really annoys me because the original pitch for X looked like it would have been exactly that.
-
I saw the boat episode a few days ago which is considered to be the best episode and I hated it. As for Sonic X in Japan I heard that the show wasn't really well received there since ya know that area doesn't care for the franchise that much and the only reason why it got a 3rd season was because of it's popularity overseas. Again that's what I heard
-
See, in a show with good writing, putting all the characters on a cruise ship for an episode would be great fun. It's classic character writing - if the personalities are strong enough then you can put em in any random situation and come out with something engaging. Sonic characters can DEFINITELY work in stuff like that I think, but again, just needs better writing.

I want another story driven Sonic show again I think it can work with good writing. Also make it a Netflix original so at least we know it won't get screwed over

(the description implies it's from Initial D but i couldn't find it)

As much criticism as I had for BOTW, I gotta say, it's pretty easy to forget all that when I'm actually playing it. Such a fun and relaxing experience. So in a way I think of my criticisms less as "here's what it did wrong" and more like "this game is awesome, but it could be MORE awesome in the future." I'm legit pumped to see what stuff Nintendo has in store for its franchises going forward.

What are you folks' favorite anime openings? Of the ones I've seen I'd say Mob Psycho, the first FMA Brotherhood op, and the second Stardust Crusaders OP are the most impressive.

Hard to say my all time favorite but right now it's this

Naruto's second OP is unforgettable to me, as is One Punch Man's. Berserk (the good one) also has a great theme, and of course someone will mention Evangelion at some point so I guess that's me.
Also, Yu Yu Hakusho is getting it's OP stuck in my head more often than not nowadays.

UNNECESSARY SONIC NITPICK #1412: i don't really like the current 1-up jingle from 06 onwards, the Adventure one was cooler
-
I do like that tune, but I prefer it being exclusive to getting a Chaos Emerald, and 1-Ups having their own theme, like in 3&K.
-
PC the Hedgehog reacted to this
-
Yeah I'd probably agree, I wouldn't mind having that tune stick with the emeralds and have each game's 1-Up theme reference that game's main theme tune instead.

Finally finished Diamond is Unbreakable. I think Stardust Crusaders left a bigger impression on me, but DiU is the best in plenty of ways, especially art direction. Also really liked how bizarre and convoluted the Stand powers got, and the main group of characters were very likable.

Part of the reason I think Zeldas should be smaller than BotW is so the world doesn't need repeated content. I like finding the hidden bosses like the Hinoxes and Moldugas, but I'd find it more exciting if you would just find THE Hinox and THE Molduga. One off discoveries feel more special.
-
I don't mind there being multiple variants of some boss monsters, but some one offs would have been appreciated. I was convinced there was only one Molduga for the longest, though, so at least he's rare.

I dunno if making them one-off is the way to go, since tougher enemies are a lot of fun in my opinion, but they definitely lose their luster by the fourth time around for sure.
Really just needs more enemy variety to solve it, honestly. If Pikmin can have 12+ special bosses while having tons of different smaller enemies, I don't see why Zelda can't. *shrug*
That, and finding a special boss in a gigantic game feels a lot more special than finding one in a smaller game imo; though, I dunno what degree of "smaller" you're thinking about, here
-
Well, I hate to be a one-trick pony, but I'll have to refer to my beloved Dark Souls on how optional bosses can be done right. The series is chock full of great bosses, and a lot of them are just off the beaten path and in hidden, hard to find areas that make you feel like a champ for finding. Plus it's Dark Souls and it's hard, so beating them is super satisfying too.
BotW's open world is much different from Dark Souls, which is more like a tightly compact Metroidvania as opposed to something like a huge Skyrim land, but I think it can have moments like that just as well. The first time I found a Hinox in a reservoir kinda near Hiteno Village, I actually got that feeling of excitement, thinking I'd found a totally unique boss in this one area in the whole world.
There can also be stuff like Lynel's too though, very tough enemies, but without boss health bars so that it doesn't feel like a boss fight was wasted on a repeat encounter.
-
-
I agree but if I had my way then every game would be dark souls
-
The Deleter reacted to this
-
Well that's what I'm talking about; Dark Souls makes it feel valuable because it's difficult to find off the beaten, obvious path, and feels so much more rewarding to find and defeat than a boss would feel otherwise, but with Zelda you have to actively seek out this kind of stuff, in a world without those barriers and hallways, like you said. If they were all closer together, it might feel a little too pedestrian to find and beat them, as the closer they are to the main content, the less optional and secretive they'd seem. Just feels like they go hand-in-hand with the world size itself for once, unlike most of the other content in the game.

Bosses in general were one of my biggest letdowns with BotW. Apart from the final boss, not only did they feel strangely clumsy and unpolished, but they all looked the same and had zero personality. Like the dungeons themselves, it basically amounted to "I am one of four thingies you must get past so you can complete the video game." Cmon yo, gimme some bosses with cool designs and unique lore.

guys can you help me remember this stupid sonic animation someone made, all i remember is that it was crudely animated and that it involved sonic screaming and getting launched into the sun

Isn't that all of 'em

It's not the worst movie ever, but it's just yet another goofy kid's franchise turned into an overly dramatic and desaturated attempt at being more serious. Like Bayformers, I get the feeling that the creators resent the original franchise's goofiness rather than love and embrace it. It was a joyless slog.
And I'm not even attached to the franchise really. After looking up the character designs, I imagine fans of the show wouldn't be very happy with it either.
-
-
I thought it was good. Apart from the zords combat which was rubbish and the ending mid-credits scene which was a badly done reveal "oh of course you'll get a sequel".
SpoilerI thought the idea that Rita & Zordon were power rangers originally was an interesting new take on it.
Presumably in the sequel Rita sets up her base on the moon and gives the green powers toTommy etc.
-
As someone who's a fan of the series, like I've a full scale Red Ranger helmet, it was still plenty goofy.
SpoilerLike when they slapped Rita into space...
I think them having the main five actually, well, being five teenagers with attitude worked. It also allowed for some emotional scenes, mainly with Billy.
Unlike Bayformers this still treated it's characters with respect.

I'm honestly really worried Walking Dead is just gonna go on forever. I can imagine next season being a great stopping point, but I feel like they could potentially milk it for too long.

I lost touch with it at the end of Season 3 - it became a subscription channel-only show here in the UK after Season 3 and I just couldn't be arsed to download it instead. I used to enjoy it but don't really miss it either. The Telltale games, imperfect as they are, are my favourite branch of the series and the only thing I pay attention to these days.
Even though I kept watching I definitely didn't love any of it as much as the first Season. The story was so tight with so much happening every episode due to the short-form 6-episode format and, completely as expected, the story beats became significantly more drawn out when it was made into a regular style show with a whole load of episodes to make each season.
I'd have LOVED if they had made the show stay short-form like that, make it each season be like a yearly "event" that lasts a month and a half, but obviously that doesn't make the $$$$$
Season 3 of the game has been really good for me so far though, it's a shame that Season 2 soured everyone's opinion of it, seemingly permanently.

started watching FMA (Brotherhood). i like it. drew a lust.
-
Hate to say it but I am really not digging Nier: Automata. It's got the flashy combat of a Platinum game but it's trapped in a ridiculously boring series of events, plus knowing that progressing through the story requires multiple playthroughs completely kills my motivation. I think I'll be selling this one.
-
Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City is one hell of a sendoff for the series. The final boss puts the base game's to shame, not to mention pretty much every other boss from every other video game.
-
BotW's Hyrule Castle music is a strong contender for my favorite music in the whole series
-
Marvel movies often have really strangely depressing colors that don't really fit the tone or costumes, but the new Spider-Man posters look really nicely saturated. Hope the movie is as well.
-
BotW spoilers:
I gotta say, Calamity Ganon's first boss phase has a great design. I was expecting something like the classic upright standing pig man with swords, but instead they just went full on scary mode and made him a horrific abomination. Love it, it's been a long time since I've seen a Nintendo game go dark like that, and I was hoping Zelda would do it. Zelda and Metroid in particular could benefit a lot from scary moments, as long as they don't try too hard like Twilight Princess.
-
i'm gonna make a JoJo's animation and I'm putting it up to a vote, Jotaro Vs. DIO or Iggy Vs. Pet Shop

One Punch Man is on Netflix, sub and dub. Go watch it if ya haven't (strongly recommend dub).
