  1. How does 'being a realist, but also an optimist' even work

You can't be both, pick one

Realistic optimism. Also,  realism isn't the opposite of optimism. That's cynicism you're thinking of.

"I love to think that Sonic might make it okay and we can win this, but let's be real here. The odds of that happening are not in our favor."

Realistic optimism is still something specific and seperate from both Realist and Optimist, though. "I'm a realist and and an optimist" and "I'm an optimistic realist" are two different things. Both "Realist" and "Optimist" are clear cut, defined words that you can't mix, even if they're not polar opposites (which is pessism).

I know this is just some dumb line (though Bob Iger said the same exact phrase in an Disney+ Interview, which is why I bring it up in the first place), but it's just a pet peeve of mine.

@SupahBerry I know that's what they meant, but that's just boiling down to "I'd love to be optimistic but I can't be so I'm realistic" which is exactly what I'm hung up about lol

Again, I'm not confused by the line, it was pretty clear cut what they meant, I'm just bothered by the phrasing xP

@Jovahexeon Ogilvie Maurice Cynicism isn't the opposite of optimism; that's pessimism.
