The turnaround of Microsoft this Gen was amazing, to say the least.
They went from being absolutely loathed and ridiculed when they first showed the SPORTSPORTSPORTS Box at the beginning of the Gen and the whole DRM debacle, to now giving away access to an absurd amount of games for a flipping buck. It's absolutely insane, in the best way. Or heck, even shit like letting Nintendo use Banjo in Smash, because they know people would love it.
"When everybody plays, we all win" could be taken cynically if it was said by a lot of gaming companies, but right now, from MS, despite being an evil mega corporation like anybody else, I almost kinda believe they mean it. And after how they started this Gen, it's an astonishing feat.
Ehh, I still don't think they pulled off an amazing turnabout. Game Pass and BC is easily the biggest advantages they pulled out and they should be commended for it, but they still have the massive problem of just having shit all to play, that incentives it over the alternatives.
One X might be the strongest, but not enough to justify buying it over a PS4 Pro where you then also have Sony's gigantic library of exclusives on top of the third party offerings. Switch has the novelty of portability play, on top of their own massive exclusive line.
I really truly don't think Microsoft is gonna pull a true turnabout until they get a grip and start upping their game with exclusives. They've got so many third-party studios now, and yet the only notable games we're still getting is Halo, Forza, Gears, and occasionally a random oddball game, while a lot of the other stuff has been pretty mediocre. Sunset Overdrive IMO is probably the only time they did something out of their comfort area and really knocked it out of the park, and that's because Insomniac were behind it.
Hell, I think PS3 did an even bigger turnaround last year. Many people don't seem to remember that Sony seriously shot themselves in the foot, and put them right into Microsoft's current position.
Overpriced at launch compared to the alternatives, focus placed on the wrong aspects, smugly saying consumers shouldn't have a problem investing in a PS3, and having piss-poor exclusives out of the gate, or inferior running third-party stuff.
Then with the introduction of the PS3 slim, they seriously fired on all cylinders, cutting the price massively, introducing exclusives that really began taking advantage of the hardware, especially starting with Uncharted 2, third party devs began to make use of the technology better, more features were added and introduced, etc.
@Blue Blood now that I think of it, “Multiple Scoliosis” doesn’t really sound like a comeback story anyone would want to hear
