JingleBoy got a reaction from BlueSky in HOT TAKE: Should Sonic Team stop listening to the fans?
I don't think they should completely ignore the fans. They should stay aware of what kind of things the fans want, but they shouldn't let it dictate how they build their games.
I know this is a bold statement, but hear me out.
So I was in the middle of reading this Russo brothers interview (directors of Avengers: Infinity War) and there's one quote that caught me by surprise
I don't know why but when I saw the phrase "bad choices" used in this kind of context, my mind jumped to Sonic Team. To me a game like Forces seems like the very epitome of trying to please every possible faction of the fanbase. It's designed by committee basically.
Let's be real here, there are a lot of different voices in the fandom and it's never really possible to reach a kind of consensus. Every Joe on this planet has made a feature length Youtube video-essay on how to fix Sonic in 3D.
I basically think Sonic Team should hire a director who has a clear and confident vision for what a 3D Sonic can and should be like and give them free-range to make the type of game that they know would work.
But like I said, I don't think they should completely ignore the fans because it has lead to some great things.

Tails doesn't suit snarkiness or sarcasm. He's best when he's humble, honest and a bit naïve, which makes him a suitable counter to Sonic's brash and cocky attitude. It works when he's trying going toe-to-toe with Eggman, which is why I think it's fine that he got pissed off with Sonic trusting Eggman to do a job that Tails could have done in Lost World. Other times in the same game though, particularly when he's acting smug after being captured and bragging to Sonic about how he can build anything, came off as out of character. In a team scenario like this where Knuckles is also in the mix, Tails needs his more toned down characteristics to create a good dynamic between the trio. The way he's behaving in this game is just unlikeable in ever sense.

JingleBoy reacted to TideKai in Should Sonic take a break?
You know, I used to strongly think that Sonic Team needed to take a break and then come back to the franchise with new and fresh eyes, but I've changed my mind since then. For starters, I learned from this board there isn't even really a Sonic Team anymore. Much of Sonic Team apparently has either gone off to other companies or now it's people being kind of rotated based on where they're needed the most.
But other than that, I don't think a break will do any good. I used to think that it was simply a case of Sega being burned out and just cranking out Sonic games due to some sort of obligation, but now I don't feel it's that anymore. It's not an issue of being tired anymore. I think it's just an issue of not knowing exactly what to do. In this case, taking a break won't help. You can be an artist and take a break for ten years, but if you don't examine yourself and try to understand why you need to improve and how, that time means nothing. Ten years later, you'll come back and make the same thing again. Simply taking a break or waiting doesn't improve anything or make anyone better at their job.
However, I do wonder if it'd be a benefit to maybe have some sort of meeting about Sonic? Not like a super serious "RED ALERT THIS IS NOT A DRILL" type thing, but just a kind of get-together of the current employees working on Sonic and really trying to work out the next game on a fundamental level. Examine flaws and strengths, look back on mistakes and achievements, and really try and put some sort of genuine heart into the project. Choose a direction they want to go in and stick to it with confidence. If it doesn't work, really sit down and understand why. I want Sega to understand their mistakes and improve based on what they find out.
I don't want Sonic to just take a break only to come back and make the same mistakes over and over again. I want a genuine effort to improve.

Yes!! If she came back I'd be super happy.
Fumie Kumatanie & Kenichi Tokoi appreciation post:
Overall, this news has me pretty optimistic. I feel like we may be in for another '06-->Unleashed situation where the next 3D game is a solid product with strong direction, presentation and high production values.
I don't think there'll be a tie-in game for the movie, those don't really exist in the same way they used to. I wouldn't doubt them making a movie branded version of Sonic Dash though.

I just wanna see how this will turn out before raising any expectations. Been burned enough times with this franchise. Remember, I had real hopes for Forces (before it even had a proper name).
The thing that should start off to win back people's confidence and optimism (yet again) is a Sonic Mania sequel by the same team, with the same level of quality and polish. It was easily the highest point of the franchise since Sonic Adventure release on the Dreamcast, like you or not classic Sonic or 2D games, it was a fucking great game in general.
Hopefully TSR will do at least "okay" and give the fans some pinch of joy for a while. I imagine we'll be in the middle of a hype cycle for the next game at the point TSR comes out, which I still think it will be the Mania sequel, but NOT the next Sonic Team modern Sonic game. That game is probably gonna be announced during the first quarter of 2020 with a release date for the last quarter as usual.
I suppose it's early to bet, but I guess the chances of a Sonic Forces' spiritual sequel are the highest, which isn't what most people want I'm sure... I doubt the avatar will never return. Classic Sonic tho'? Only for the 2D projects I hope.
I really don't have any hope for Sonic Team's next project untill I see it. God I really hope it isn't a movie tie-in game tho'.
Best case scenario: both Team Mania (US) and Sonic Team (US and JP) join forces and make the best 3D Sonic to date. Even if we don't get a Mania sequel, if we do get a 3D game with the same quality of Mania, it will be the best thing.

A less scattered production team is good new though. Means everyone can much more easily communicate and stay on the same wavelength. Let's hope it means something for the quality of Sonic games coming out in the future.

JingleBoy reacted to Plasme in The Making of: Sonic Adventure (New Iizuka Interview)
I really hope they don't remake Adventure. It would be probably along the lines of Spyro and Crash, and Adventure is too fundamentally broken for that. Even if you fix the camera and controls, you still have Big and Amy's awful stages, Gamma's ill-fitting gameplay, the boring Adventure fields, the dull story, tedious bosses, and uninspiring plane shooting section. If you radically changed these aspects, you'd be straying too far from the source material.
I'm also just bored of revisiting old classics with slightly improved (or different) graphics.
If they want to revisit Adventure, which I would like to see, they should make a spiritual successor to Adventure 1 and 2 and focus solely on Sonic's gameplay. That would be the best option going forward.

JingleBoy reacted to Bobnik in HOT TAKE: Should Sonic Team stop listening to the fans?
It's a bit of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type of situation with ST. On one side of the spectrum, we have Forces, which tried to appease every single person in the world with adding so much superficial shit the overall package felt really inconsistent. The butchered boost gameplay is there to try to appease boost games fans. Classic with its butchered gameplay is there to try to appease to classic fans. The more serious take on the story is there to try to appease those who wanted something more than a silly, goofy "haha nosehair" stuff. The OC character creation is there to appease the OC creators/deviantart people. Chaos is there to bait out more Adventure fanboys. The oversimplification of gameplay is because they wanted to appeal toddlers (probably, but mostly an exaggeration there). There's a lot of surface-level stuff that pretty much tried to appeal to everyone, only for the whole thing to fail miserably.
But on the other side of the spectrum we have Lost World, which also tried to appease as many people as possible, but this time putting non-fans/casuals at the forefront, while completely ignoring actual fans. No-one asked for sausage design for levels. No-one asked for the run button (at least from what I've seen). No-one really asked for Play-Doh villains that don't fit Sonic at all. This game is a mess because there was nothing for the fans, even on the superficial level (except for aesthetics "trying" to go for more classic and failing miserably at that as well).
So it's not that they should stop listening to fans, it's moreso that they should stop trying to make games and trying to appease every single person in the existence. It's impossible to do and you're just asking for trouble if you try doing it. Find a specific target group and focus on it when making games. Sure, that wouldn't increase the quality of games right away, but at least that'd alleviate the problem of "ST don't know what the hell they're doing" somewhat. At least I think.

JingleBoy reacted to Diogenes in HOT TAKE: Should Sonic Team stop listening to the fans?
Yeah, they should ignore all the fans, except me, and the people who agree with me.
Really though, as much as listening to fans can be a trap, the designers trusting their own instincts isn't a guarantee of things going well either. I think most of the series' failures are squarely on Sonic Team's shoulders, and even if we stuck them in an isolation chamber for a few years to work out what they genuinely felt would be best for Sonic I wouldn't trust them to come up with something good. Conversely, look at Mania. That's a game made by fans. Dedicated, passionate, knowledgeable fans, who had a clear idea of what they and a significant number of other people wanted out of the series. And even without going as far as hiring a team of longtime fans to make a game, there's value in having a finger on the pulse of the fanbase, getting a sense of what they feel worked and what hasn't, and what kinds of things they're hoping to see in the future.
So it's not something I consider to have a clear yes-or-no answer. Obviously the developers should be capable of producing good games without needing fans to lead them in the right direction, but I also think it's possible to have a healthy relationship with the fanbase and to make good use of criticism and fan response. Unfortunately we're stuck with the worst of both ends, with Sonic Team being generally incompetent and the fanbase being so fractured that it's hard to find any kind of clear and consistent response to work from.

Sonic Mania+ has brought Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel back into the limelight and even if it turns out to only be their last 5-seconds of fame in the long run, it's a welcome return and farewell in my books. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he sucks to play as in Mania or anything like that, this is mainly about the masses of people that worship and stan this character like he's jesus or something.
Even before Mania+, I've always seen so many people rally behind this character and I really just don't understand what's so good about him. In Knuckles Chaotix he's just a Sonic stand-in, with no defining characteristics right?

People give Shadow so much flack, but at least he has a personality and back-story to define him as a character.
On that note, what even is Mighty's personality?? Even watching Mania Adventures (great series) I get the impression they were sort of struggling to find anything interesting to do with him purely because he has little to no interesting character traits. They did a great job with portraying Ray as a funny goofball kid, but I get none of that from Mighty. Is Mighty supposed to be cocky and arrogant? Then he's basically just Sonic, right? Is he supposed to be strong but short-tempered? Then he's basically just Knuckles, right?
I groaned when Mighty and Ray were announced as playable characters for Mania+ cause I (and a lot of others) really wanted to see a fully playable classic Amy and I think it sucks that her only appearance in the game was relegated to a joke that kind of mocks her as a character (I chuckled though ngl). My 9 year old cousin was disappointed at the lack of Amy I'll tell you that much lol, but how can I explain to her that "oh uuh she couldn't be in the game cause modern sonic and classic sonic are for some reason now in alternate dimensions and as a result this puts a limit on what they can and can't do with the franchise and since she really only became playable in modern-onwards it's unlikely that she'll be in the game but hey uuhh i could be proven wrong i'll get back to you on that one kiddo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯".
I've since learned to love Ray and tolerate Mighty. Ray has personality and charm as a character that I think really sets him apart from everyone else; like I said, he's a lovable goofball kid.
I don't get an ounce of personality from Mighty and I think that's part of the reason why Sonic Team chose not to bring him back. He's the classic equivalent of Silver the Hedgehog, prove me wrong.

Considering the driving age is 16- 18 in most countries, I'd say every character but Eggman is too young to drive then.
Team Sonic Racing should have been a sad lonely Eggman driving in circles by himself.
Unless Shadow being frozen for 50 years counts as his actual aging, then he can join in.

But yeah, sorry 4 times world saver, 4 times potential Olympic game winner, 3 times Extreme board champion Cream, cars are too dangerous for you.
