@VEDJ-F That all makes sense. It seems to me that gaming companies understandably care a lot less about anniversaries than their fans do, as evidenced by Metroid's whatevereth anniversary recently, which fans somewhat presumptiously expected Nintendo to celebrate. Companies care about anniversaries if and only if they stand to make money off them which would entail them just so happening to have a big game ready that they can hold for the anniversary and stir up fan hype in the meantime with various celebrations and sales. Sega apparently wasn't ready to release anything and therefore didn't draw out their anniversary celebration any further than they did, as you said, potentially lessening any anniversary hype that the comics could either provide or draw on.
To be honest, I don't think that the video game production cycle and its uncertainties lend to anniversary planning very well, and it hits me as strange that fans of any given franchise would expect a tent-pole game every five years on the year. With how long it takes to make games, I feel like that would require at least every second main-series game in most series to be a big anniversary celebration, which seems silly.

I'm not sure if anyone knows for certain (someone correct me). It all depends on who owns the stuff Archie made, if IDW would have to license it from them, etc. Anything is possible if they're willing to pay for it.

If IDW deemed it worth the cost, it could be a good thing for everyone around. Maybe they could make some money along with Sega and even the ligneous former writers. They'd have to factor how much they think they could make, though.

If IDW is in talks with any of them regarding continuing to be a part of the Sonic book(s), then they probably know. But even if that's true, we don't know for how long, and it's possible that IDW isn't reaching out to any of the current staff, though that would be unfortunate.

Fair. I guess it may be a pretty big "if".

It irritates me a bit how people seem to over-worship the Mega Drive books, but with the final story finished and untold, they really do need to be collected and released, probably in graphic novel form, as others have said.
I'd also really like to see the rest of the post-reboot graphic novels released, right up until they were cancelled. All those Sonic and Sonic Universe stories are good and are worth being collected. If they can, IDW should start where Archie left off and move forward with the same numbering Archie was using for the graphic novels. They'd get better sales this way as opposed to reprinting stuff that's already been collected. After that, once the Archie-printed books get scarce due tot being out of print, then it would make more sense for them to be reprinted under their own label. Whether they keep the same title or not is less important, so they could change it to distinguish it from the graphic novels for their presumably new series if they want. I still want IDW to continue from where Archie left off as far as characters, stories, and issue numbering for reasons I described in detail in another thread, but we'll see.
If they're able to go back further for some reason and reprint not only the reboot stuff but also Sagas and potentially even Archives, then more power to them.
On the other hand, maybe a part of this deal is that Archie gets to keep reprinting the stuff they made, but I kind of doubt it. Again, I'm sure we can all file this under a "wait and see" header.

Well it might be not be impossible.  Megadrive:Overdrive being printed is right up there with the FF staying in the book as things fans seem to be reqeuesting the most, so hopefully IDW & SEGA will at least take it into consideration.

All of them are reasonable ideas except Knuckles as a main character. Due to his function as the guardian of the Master Emerald (good at it or not) he really doesn't have the free time to just decide to join Sonic and his friends on their adventures regularly. He'd probably just be a character who sometimes shows up depending on the stakes of the situation to help out.

Ian's all but specifically said already that SEGA would be fine with them using Chronicles, but the minute they do, Penders starts shit. So I doubt IDW would go for it either.

I've always wanted to know what was supposed to happen/be in the sequel.
Being honest Chronicles 2 is the most instant rage topic I have in this franchise. It literally feels like it burns deep down because I was one of the few that saw all those Satam references, and when I saw that cliffhanger ending...
No joke, it made me shed a few tears. It was a gorgeous story to me and the references felt like some real love/appreciation was going on in that game.
Was the game play and/or graphics bad? In their own ways yes, another reason I wanted the sequel, to see improvements.
    Chronicles... D@#$ it...

Honestly at this point I feel kinda sorry for IDW.  If they keep the characters SEGA purists will be mad and potentially won't read the book.  If they drop the characters Archie/SATAM purists will be mad and potentially won't read the book.

Either way between the hiatus & transfer of publisher Sonic could end up losing readers.

But again hopefully SEGA will play it smart and give IDW enough leeway to do what they need to do and the publisher will promote the book enough to make the damage minimal.

I heard the news and came here to share my thoughts, but @Ryannumber1gamer @Indigo Rush and @SonicComicFanboy already made all the points that i was going to go through, so thanks guys .
so i'm keeping this short, what i most want/wish (in relevance order):
Keep the Staff Keep the Characters Keep the Continuity (not likely happening but one can hope right?) btw the first two are really close, almost tied... almost.

One thing I would say about a possible eventual conclusion for Sonic Mega Drive (probably the most likely bit of Archie content to appear again, characters or otherwise if you ask me) is that they actually cancel the Overdrive issue completely and just simply skip ahead and release the completed trilogy in a paperback release.
Considering it's likely gonna have been around at least two years since the original part 1 release it'd just seem weird for them to release a concluding issue after all that time. Heck it'd even given the paperback a further marketing push if it contains the exclusive conclusion to the saga.

Whatever makes you continue to feel superior to others brah.

@KKM:  Oh no doubt thats a possibility, though its also possible IDW could ask for an agreement simillar to Archie's in terms of character usage.

Again all any of us can do is wait and see what the final product looks like whenever solicitations finally hit.

From what Ian's been saying lately, the reason AoSTH and SatAM got to remain was a literal grandfathering- not because they were there already, but because the original contracts that kept being renewed had covered not just the games but AoSTH and SatAM too. With new contracts being made for IDW now, it's much more likely AoSTH and SatAM content will go the way of Underground and X.

You've already made up your mind about the characters and how you think the franchise should be handled so debating is pointless and a waste of both our time.  So yea.

But yea, again we won't know whats what till the solicits come out so all any of us can do is wait.

     Pointless antagonistic attitude=Helpful!?

Well if anything this thread is helping me discover who to add to the ignore list.

    On to another topic.
Question: Would SEGA be justified in screwing with both hardcore SEGA  & SATAM fans and just telling IDW to make the comic a continuation of Underground? XD

Not only that, but the mandates were also conveyed in a manner that was left up to the imagination...well from what we ever heard of them.
"Sonic could never lose".......an arc. he could lose at certain issues in an arc, to come back later for a comeback.
"Sonic can't cry", which is more so he can't really break down into a sobbing mess, which does make sense considering the character. Didn't stop him from being sad, distressed or even shedding a tear.
    And so on, so fourth.
"More game-focused", by no means that we're saying goodbye to all the Archie characters.
