ITS ABOUT FUKING TIEM NINTENDO/GAME FREAK!

They finally got to our Ruby and Sapphire remakes and it took them so many years to get to it. I do wonder how much Gen 6's mechanics will affect Ruby and Sapphire but damn, Gen 3 is my favorite Gen overall and I'm pretty damn excited they're finally doing this in this really awesome gen.

OH! One thing I'd really love to see them do is expand more on changing stats, even if just in minor ways. X/Y was the first game in the series to do this (aside from the special defense stat being introduced in Gen 2) and I could potentially see this game doing it for more 'mons.

Kamakai reacted to Vertekins in Sonic the Hedgehog: how fans have subverted a fallen mascot
Why do people who clearly know nothing about Sonic the Hedgehog or it's fandom talk in an authoritative way as if they do? You see it on Cracked, Kotaku and IGN and this is yet another example.

It makes them look like utter tools.

I love this song so much. It's insane with the gibberish vocal samples and the supernatural atmosphere the instruments give off, I could really listen to this forever.

Ahem, I know, late to the party, but I want to show my respect to Knuckles as a character before his sudden drop into irrelevance and flanderization. And so, I have. That's what this post is.

(I've yet to play Lost World, so please bear with me on the lack of any thoughts or observations that are relevant to the game, Wii U or 3DS. Thank you in advance.)

Ah, the Sonic series. I could mindlessly ramble on for hours about the things I love about my undisputed favourite gaming franchise. However, for the sake of detail, I will only focus on a few that come into my mind. And I've got to say, one of the first things that makes this franchise unique amongst countless others is the sheer depth of the in-game universe, particularly game-specific settings and locales, but also the achievement of tying it all into a coherent, expansive universe that is rich and teeming with life and variety.

Green Hill Zone, Act 2. Sonic Generations.

Chemical Plant Zone, Act 1. Sonic Generations.

Flame Core, Silver. Sonic the Disaster Hedgehog 2006. (Sorry, gotta be positive.)

    Radical Highway. Sonic Adventure 2.

Starlight Carnival, Act 1. Sonic Colours.

    Cool Edge, Day. Sonic Unleashed.

The screenshots above capitalize on my statement. The universe is expansive and genuinely interesting, which makes it a joy to interact with. It has such a wide range of areas to explore and rush through, often noticeably different in tone and pace, yet it manages to tie it all together into one universe that has managed to create and (to a certain degree) sustain it's identity. After 20+ years of games and settings for this series, I see this as a remarkable accomplishment. Not many video game series have a universe with so much variety, and yet also with an instantly recognisable feel, and this is the main (yet only one of so, so many) reasons I applaud the franchise.

Also, the variety in atmosphere and setting of a singular level, is truly something to make note of. Take, for example, Sonic and Knuckles' Lava Reef Zone.

Yes. These two screenshots are of the same zone. The transition is so subtle, yet so effective: Sonic (or Tails/Knuckles, but I digress) treks through the inside of the sweltering Lava Reef Zone, which cools down slowly and takes on a cooler colour scheme to magnify the change as Sonic reaches the Hidden Palace Zone, the sacred holding place of the seven Super Emeralds. (The existence of them in today's canon is questionable, because they seem to have been written out in favour of the outside altar, but as long as there is no proof against them existing, I don't see why they shouldn't. Plus, that's a topic for another thread.)

That is a downright masterful implementation of atmosphere in what is, may I remind, you, a 16-bit game from 1994 that lacks any dialogue or method of storytelling barring simple sprite cutscenes and the music, which happens to be my 2nd favourite aspect of this series. (That is, most Sonic music, not exclusively this game's.)

And while some may argue that Skyscraper Scamper does not fit in a world with Windy Hill and Starlight Carnival, I see no legitimate reason as to why an immensely popular fictional universe should be held to a single style with no variety or experimentation. I have absolutely no issue with Station Square and Aquatic Ruin Zone being in the same universe, because despite the obvious difference in aesthetics, they share a distinguishable style: A crazy, yet occasionally serious place, filled with inconvenient architecture, whether it be on questionably designed harbours or sunny pastures, littered with item boxes, gold rings, speed booster pads, rotating lampposts  and seven mystical chaos emeralds that are the balance to everything.

And that, to me, is the Sonic series' greatest triumph.

Kamakai reacted to Tara in Popular and unpopular Sonic opinions you agree and disagree with!
For much of Sonic's lifespan following the Dreamcast era, I'm pretty sure Yuji Naka had very little influence on the Sonic series as a whole.  I think he'd made it clear long before left that he'd plans to leave Sega to start his own studio, anyway.  Also, the dash pads are still a pretty relevant feature in Sonic games, even more so now than previously since we no longer have the luxury of free-roaming outside of the claustrophobic trails that you're forced to speed run on.

Kamakai got a reaction from Sonictrainer in What are your favourite official Sonic images.
As well as the kickass Sonic Adventure bendy-action style, I love the Sonic Battle art. The shading is simple and clear, the colours bold and bright, although I never really see it get any love. I really wish Yuji Uekawa and Hisanobu Kometani would do some images like this for spin off games, and keep the Adventure style for the main series. Anything is at least better than the uninspired, bland CGI on the boxart today.

I want to finish the game, but then I don't want to since I know I won't have much to do other than raise pokemon.
