Sonic R had a menu theme? Cover or no cover I really dig this.

neezTHEhuman reacted to Milo in Is the Sonic Advance Trilogy any good?
If you like the Genesis games, I'd recommend Advance 1. Pretty basic adaptation for the Adventure/Millennium era with minimal surprises or expansion, but I'd say it's the most well-rounded of the three and worth checking out at least once.
If you like speedrunning games (i.e. Adventure 2, Rush series, Boost games) I'd recommend Advance 2, which throws the baby out of the bathwater there. I don't really care much for that type of game philosophy at all with respect to platforming games, but recognize it has an audience.
If you love the first two games, you might enjoy Advance 3? Besides that demographic and the game's soundtrack, I don't recommend it at all; and I say that in spite of getting further in that game compared to Advance 2. It clumsily juggles tag-team mechanics, hubworlds, and labyrinth levels and the result is rather bloated and messy, even for the Advance series (which has a lot of redundant mechanics).
On the whole I'd say all of them are relatively average, with each succeeding installment being a few steps down lower in quality than the last.

the first game is great if you can deal with the hardware limitations and some instances of poor level design. Second game can be a good time once you've learned the level layouts, third game is shit.

that kind of deliberate style clashing does things to me mentally tho, good things. its why I'm such a fan of Roger Rabbit and Gumball. I agree that this isn't the ideal sonic game look though but the execution is good

@neezTHEhuman Who it stars really doesn't matter one iota. The problem with the Werehog is the gameplay. It bothers immensely every time I hear people say something along the lines of "just replace the Werehog with Knuckles" or "make it a spin off" because it represents a complete lack of understanding. I enjoy the Werehog as is. But it's got huge issues concerning repetitive button mashing combat, cheap level design, being woefully underpowered until levelled up a lot, excessively long levels and contrasting the better half of the gameplay shamelessly. It does not belong alongside the daytime gameplay, but as long as it's going to be there it needs some serious refinements.

I don't know but if it is a shrink ray and then it shrinks ray, then it is a shrink ray that shrinks ray.
Or is it a baby ray that babies ray?

neezTHEhuman reacted to Plumbers_Helper in One problem I have with the "two worlds" split is that we no longer really have much
The Sonic the Hedgehog Technical Files say that Eggman's idea of a perfect world "would be to have it full of nothing but machines. He thinks they are beautiful and he likes that he can control them. A genuine genius megalomaniac, he spends all of his time trying to replace the natural world with his beautiful machines. He is not very concerned about saving the planet (being a notorious polluter), and he particularly likes the idea of exploiting the oceans for their riches."
It certainly doesn't sound he's trying to make the world a better place, maybe for himself, but certainly not for others.
It would certainly be an interesting idea though, one of my favorite interpretations of Eggman was in the Sonic X comic. In that all he truly wanted was to be loved, he's just trying to get that love the wrong way: by force. It's why he cared about losing in front of a child as El Gran Gordo, why when he switched bodies with Sonic he used his new abilities to save the President. It doesn't excuse any of his malicious actions, but it's an interesting interpretation to me all the same.

neezTHEhuman reacted to Plumbers_Helper in One problem I have with the "two worlds" split is that we no longer really have much
I agree, it seems to imply that there is no goverment in Sonic's World. Everyone just lives peacefuly with one another, in Sonic X Knuckles finds the idea of owning any kind of land absurd from Chris and Tails finds the concept of needing a Pilot's Licence when he can already fly a plane confusing. Eggman also didn't seem to be aware of the concept of a President in episode 3. Although this is information from a different continuity, it's the only time key members of Sonic Team have explored the "two worlds" concept.

I'm sure there are highly respected individuals that the people of Sonic's World listen to, but perhaps they don't have any official status as we understand it. In fact, they could be why Eggman is so interested in taking over this world inhabited by animals: they have no government to challenge him. No official military or anything that could oppose him, just an annoying hedgehog and his meddling friends.

neezTHEhuman reacted to Dr. Mechano in One problem I have with the "two worlds" split is that we no longer really have much
    That's an interesting outlook.
Heck, if that's true, then maybe from Eggman's perspective, he thinks he's helping the animals by "civilizing" them by imposing an actual government on them. He has said in Sonic Runners that he believes he's making the world a better a place, at least.

No. I’d just like to be able to click on something Sonic and be able to enjoy Sonic without being force fed someone’s politics. That’s why I’ll avoid TSSZ from now on. I just think it’s better suited to a personal account. That’s all. No need to just assume I am not bothered by what’s going on in the world. I am, but I can get that story from news articles. I look to Sonic sites to escape all this depression.

neezTHEhuman reacted to TheOcelot in Titanic Monarch is probably the best final level in any Sonic game.
No chance. It's too automated and there are way too many springs. The colour scheme looks poor, the vertically isn't an original idea and therefore is not as impressive; was already done in Chemical Plant act2 & Mirage Saloon act1 (for Knuckles act1 in Mania Mode & act1 of Encode mode). Even the music isn't that impressive for a final zone. Some of the level design is good though.
S3&K Death Egg zone is the best 2d final zone without a doubt, no content. Best final 3D Sonic stage is probably; Final Egg from SA1 (Sonic's story) or Eggmanland in Unleashed.

neezTHEhuman reacted to Blue Blood in S4E1's plastic graphics have aged better than S4E2. I think S4E2 looks like shit thes
S4E2 looks much better in screenshots than in motion. When things are moving, it's much more obvious that many of the background graphics are just flat, low res textures , like the trees in Sylvania Castle. It's also got a strange mix between smooth and vibrants textures, and parts that look a bit too gritty. Oil Desert is incredibly boring visually.
E2 is still leagues beyond E1 in terms of looks though. Everything about E1 just looks bad.

Forces doesn't even have proper momentum in running. He runs slowly for a few steps, then suddenly runs at top speed. Nothing about Forces controls well.
SA1 introduced a lot of scripting because it was difficult to transition the series to 3D. Loops force you around them automatically, there are boosters everywhere and springs lock you in place until the top of your trajectory. The thing is, SA1 used automation and similar features (including the homing attack) to aid both the technical limitations of the hardware and the nuances of 3D design that nobody on the development was used to. Future games, starting with Heroes but in particular coming into full force with '06 and Unleashed, would use automatic, scripted or otherwise "binary" events as a crutch for armatureish, rushed or lazy design.

the dead stop is real gross, yeah. i think maybe there's an argument to be made that the original style was too convenient a way to pick up speed from a stop, but they never designed a better way to get up to a jog quickly and the new way...eugh.
