I'm getting to the point where I really think you can't make exciting level designs around the fastest speeds without them becoming quasi-QTEs. When speed shifts from a move in your arsenal to your main mode of transport, how do you interestingly impliment it into the level design?

ChaosW.'s opinion: Make Sonic fast-ish like in Adventure, and then give him a move like the Spindash or boost and make sure the levels demand their use, or at least encourage them.

I just said it's not simply artistic. Choosing between 2D and 3D to a game designer is an even bigger choice than control scheme or genre. The level design in a 2d platformer can be handled alot differently knowing the player can see everything behind them, below, and above. Precision platforming is easier since you only have to line up one axis with your target landing spot. The behavior of character movesets have to be largely reconsidered as something that used to be perfectly plausible like ducking and tapping jump might not work once down doesn't exist on your control stick. A move like Tail's flying will have to be taken into acount differently if he can pass obstacles from any side. How much longer would you have to examine the structures in angry birds before launching anything if it was in 3D? Could you even see the entire structure without taking the camera inside? Would angry birds become LESS immersive in 3D?
Immersion is cool and all, but if the gameplay experience suffers then it's not worth it.

I love how everything every person says on the internet has to come with a disclaimer. Don't asume everything I'm saying is condeming all 3D Sonic games forever. 3D Sonic games arn't right yet, and it's embarassing/bad for the character's name to have them promoted as the mainstream releases time and time again. The massive response I recieved certainly convinced me that there may still be some relevance in Sonic going to 3D but I still don't see it as necesary, or even the best thing for Sonic right now. I don't think building off the unleased/generations fomula will take Sonic in the right direction at all. In fact, I think Sonic Team needs a back to the drawing board moment in terms of moveset, physics, and level design. In the mean time, if something Sonic has to happen let it be 2D or a spinoff.

Okay, the worst 2D is worse than the best 3D. So what? The point isn't that either is inherently and inerrantly better than the other. The point is that the best of one may be consistently better than the best of the other, to the point where there's not a whole lot of point of doing the lesser.
No, you can do different with it.
Have you considered that this may be because Sonic is not as well suited for 3D as he is for 2D? There's certainly a lot to blame on Sonic Team's incompetence and misguided ideas, but what if the problem is bigger than that?
If the game works better in 2D than in 3D.
Let's look at Mega Man. They've tried a few times to move the series into 3D, and while I'm not terribly knowledgeable about them, I've gathered that they haven't been particularly successful. And I think a big part of that is that a lot of features of typical Mega Man gameplay do not translate all that well to 3D. Shooting in 3D is a very different beast than shooting in a 2D sidescroller. The pixel-perfect gameplay of the classic series is lost in a world of polygons. The dynamics of the player and enemies "controlling" the screen is entirely different. I think it's a reasonable conclusion to draw that a good 3D "Mega Man" is not really going to resemble a good 2D Mega Man, not beyond superficial trappings anyway. So if 2D Mega Man is successful, and 3D "Mega Man" becomes a wildly different game, why do it?

Also, counterquestions: Why must a series try to conquer 3D? Why should a series feel obligated to succeed in different perspectives any more than in different genres? Should Sonic also try to conquer top-down and isometric gameplay?

Scar: I have no interest in limiting Sonic to 2D, but the implication that 3D is inherently an advancement over 2D is BS. 3D isn't better, just different; some games work better in 3D, some work better in 2D, some work equally well in both, some only work in one or the other. Choosing not to take a series into 3D doesn't mean giving up on advancing the gameplay, it's just deciding that 3D is not the correct route to take.

Once Sonic replaced Alex Kidd I think that was their mascot before he became THE Sega mascot. He became the heart and soul of Sega. Like sonfan1984 said above, I couldn't really see them giving up their mascot to someone else, even IF Sega ceased to exist...

With that said though, one OTHER thing could happen, but I REALLY doubt it. Yuji Naka and Probe could pick up the franchise, and continue to make Sonic games. Who knows? Maybe that could even bring Probe higher up the scale, so they wouldn't be such a small company...

Chaos Walker reacted to Diogenes in Platforming
Sonic jumps perpendicular to the surface he's standing on, and this is important.

This particular trick doesn't really work in 3D (technically there's nothing that prevents it, but the difference in perspective makes it difficult), but considering that even the "3D" games are mostly 2D gameplay, there's no excuse for not seeing things like this. And there are ways to use this that are unique to 3D,
Paths shouldn't be designed as singular uniform tracks; there needs to be variation in the terrain, curves and angles that influence how Sonic jumps.
I'm also of the opinion that platforming isn't just about jumping, but the fight against gravity in general. And gravity is more influential in Sonic gameplay than it is in most platformers; it's not something that only comes into effect when you're in the air, and you don't get into the air only by jumping or falling. Launching up a quarter pipe can be platforming. Wallrunning can be platforming. Climbing a steep hill...is not something we would normally consider to be platforming, but there are shared mechanics, and I think it could still contribute something similar to platforming if not necessarily actual platforming.

...as long as it requires some effort, that is, it isn't automated nor are you just boosting up it.

I'm really tired of Sonic Rush style, and I have only played up to Rush Adventure. The last we heard of storybook was a poll that showed high interes for Sonic going to ancient Greece. While I would welcome a Storybook game, mostly because they add interesting flavor to the series (I don't care if Black Knight sucked. It entertained me while better stuff was comming.) but what I am curious about is SAWNIC FRIKEN KRAWNIKLES! I know we doubt that a Chronicles sequel will ever happen, but... what happened over there?

You'd have to have incredibly versatile level design for that to work; something that just isn't possible for a game as frantic and fast paced as Sonic. I'd rather have them focus on making good level design that perfectly complements Sonic's moveset.

I'd pretty much want it to look like Sonic 4 Ep 2. A careful blend of 3D and 2D elements. "Generations-lite" if you will.

3D animated cut-scenes would be cool though. I'd be cool with them breaking out of the in-game graphics to give us some cool camera angles for Knuckles dropping us into Hydrocity etc etc.

EDIT: It'd also be cool if they cooled down the cool moments to cool cool and cool.

I feel like now is time to say where this topic came from:

I have to say S3&K is in my top 3 favorite games EVUR. A while ago the WiiU was announced, and I realized that if I trade up I won't be able to play my Sonic Mega Collection anymore. I looked at the Wii's virtual Console, and saw that it would take $16 to keep access to that gem. Buying the game again has been on my mind for a bit, and well... when ANY game is on my mind for a while, I can't help but start thinking of ways to change/improve it. But this time it wasn't Metroid/Pokemon/whatever, it's SAWNIC, and I was like "Hey... I know a place where people like Sonic."

This isn't some sort of rebuttle to what anyone has said, haha. I just felt prompted to put this out there.

The Speed in Unleashed was deeeeeeeeeeefinetly fun to look at, exhilerating the play with, and drifting in games has always felt good to me. At the same time, I prefered the feel of Sonic Adventure's Red Mountain to Rooftop Run. I can't seem to get myself back to Unleashed at all. I don't remember what the levels were even like. (Except for Eggmanland. That place is ingrained in my brain.) Now I've noticed that Sonic Adventure has fallen behind as years go by due to higher standards (back then the game could get by on cool factor) but it still has that 3D platforming everyone talks about, and gee I like platforming. Not to say that modern Sonic can't platform, but it just doesn't deliver the same tight experience.

What did I really say in the end?:I have no idea. I want both somehow. : P

Chaos Walker reacted to SenEDDtor Missile in I fear for Sonic's future
This is a deep fear I have felt about Sonic for a long time. We have all seen the never ending trend involving what Sonic games should be all about. And I am sure everyone knows about those certain groups who constantly whine and scream for Sonic to return to his 2D classic glory days (the really fanatical ones I mean). It just seems like Sonic Team cannot help but try to please this vocal minority to the point that I am afraid they will simply just cave in and make Sonic nothing more than a soulless shadow of a game series with bland boring stories, copypaste nostalgic zones, no "shitty friends/3D gameplay and all that.

What do you guys feel? Do you think Sonic Team will cave in like that? I don't want Sonic to be turned into the plaything of sociopathic egotistical fanatics who use this only to inflate their horribly overbloated egos and to rub it in the faces of other Sonic fans. I want him to improve, to interact more with the other characters and for his gameplay to keep getting better, not go backwards to satisfy the elitist pricks.

I don't hate classic Sonic at all nor do I hold anything against those who do like him and are clearly 100 percent sane and understanding of differing opinions; it's just that the worst fanatics tend to bawl alot about anything that isn't "the classics".

Chaos Walker reacted to Diogenes in Rewrite that Story: Heroes-Shadow
I'm going to assume I can change anything I want about the games, short of erasing them or killing off Shadow.

    So, Heroes:

Ditch the separate pre-made teams. Make it customizable 2-man teams, using any characters you've unlocked in the story. Team Sonic and Team Chaotix's plotlines are largely intact. Sonic and Tails get wind of Eggman being up to something, they rush out to stop him (gathering friends along the way). Except, it's not really Eggman; Metal has gone rogue, locked him up (possibly because shoddy programming leads him to believe he can serve Eggman better when Eggman isn't there to get in the way), and constructed a robo-Eggman to keep the Heroes from figuring things out. Unlike Heroes, Metal isn't keeping himself a secret; he's out there fighting the heroes, and collecting their data to create a Metal *character* army. The whole teamwork moral comes in when Metal Sonic treats the other Metals as disposable, they end up destroyed, and ends up going alone against Sonic and partner, cue cheesy line about trusting your friends (and maybe a crack about Metal "making" friends). Now, Shadow isn't actually in this game at all; what we get instead, is a (or possibly several) Metal Shadow(s). These are the precursors to the Shadow androids, and the epilogue has Rouge wondering if that Metal Shadow means that Shadow survived somehow.

    ShtH:

First off, no aliens. No Black Doom, no Black Arms, no "my alien other-daddy". No guns, either, but that's not really a plot thing. The opening of the game is basically Team Dark's opening from Heroes; Rouge finds Shadow in a pod in Eggman's base, Omega attacks, they fight for a bit before Rouge stops them and gets them to team up. The game is based around giving proper attention to Shadow's amnesia (or "amnesia", depending on your choices) and the Shadow androids. The game is still based on choices, but ones that are actually meaningful; depending on what you choose to do and who you choose to follow, you can end up with various combinations of morality, knowledge of what's happened to Shadow between SA2 and now, and whether or not Shadow is real or fake. Personally, I'd make it so there's some amount of ambiguity, rather than wiping out your choices by having the game tell you which ending is right. Simply not having a single "last story" or pointing out which ending is canon is a start, but for the long-term, I'd make it so two endings are basically the same, except in one Shadow is real, and in the other he's fake, but decides to live as the real Shadow. Future games would be based off these endings, but without saying whether he's real or fake, letting the players choose for themselves (and/or argue over it ad infinitum).
