  5. One thing I love about the Guardians of the Galaxy movies over many other blockbusters nowadays is that they feel like they were led by a creator rather than a committee. You can feel James Gunn's touch and his love for the characters and universe, even if he's not the perfect filmmaker at all.

    1. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

It boggles my fucking mind that we're supposed to take this as a compliment rather than the natural order of things. Movies and games are drowning so much in executive meddling that people are legitimately starting to forget how much better things are when designers are simply left alone to do their fucking jobs and executives are simply marketing it like they should've been in the first place.

  6. I'm starting to feel like I enjoyed Guardians Vol. 2 more than the first.

Besides a lethargic climax, it did practically everything a sequel should have

    1. Boomer

      Boomer

Well you saw the first film with better company at least...

    2. Wraith

      Wraith

The character work in their second one was good enough to put it over the first. Every character was quirky, likable and had a purpose

    3. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

The only things I did not like over Guardians 2 was Rocket's new model (looked less real than the original), and the soundtrack.

      Soundtrack was FUCKING WEAK.

Otherwise, I consider it the better film.

    4. Jango

      Jango

are you saying you don't like Mr. Blue Sky, mister? Because if so, you're not my friend anymore.

    5. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

Mr. Blue Sky was a far weaker opening song than Come and Get Your Love. Sorry.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    6. Felix

      Felix

      @Nepenthe

I vehemently disagree on the soundtrack being weak. It's not imminently recognizable as Awesome Mix Vol. 1 l, but there's some great, great songs there. Lake Shore Drive, Brandy You're a Fine Girl, Mr. Blue Sky.. Father and Son and The Chain respectively both played in some of the best scenes in the film as well.

    7. Boomer

      Boomer

Personally I preferred the first as the pacing felt better and the jokes landed more.

      Quote

The Pac-Man bit in 2 felt really out of place, Drax was pretty unlikable this time and I really did not like Baby Groot at all. The fetching the fin and bomb tape jokes went on for too long imo.

Well that was meant to be a spoiler, damn it being 2am...

    8. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

It not being imminently recognizable is kind of the point. Aside from Mr. Blue Sky, it was all a blurry mush of 70s rock.

      Seriously, no Jackson 5/Michael anywhere?

      C'mon son.

    9. Wraith

      Wraith

There opening overall is much better and not a tonal atrocity like they original but I agree on the songs.

    10. Felix

      Felix

      Fair point there.

Though if there's one thing we can agree with on common ground it's that these movies rock. Bless James Gunn.

    11. Jango

      Jango

The deus ex-machina moment killed the whole movie for me, but I saw it coming a mile way. The ending was good and emotional, I got close to tears (Kat Steven's god).

But IDK, the first one was so much better to me. The story was also better writen.

    12. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

Wat? Guardians' 1 opening was great.

    13. Felix

      Felix

The opening to Guardians 1 is my favorite to any MCU movie bar none

    14. Wraith

      Wraith

THe dancing in a cave is great, but going from a woman dying from cancer TO that has bugged me every time I watched it.

Maybe that was the point tho, I dunno.

    15. Jango

      Jango

I for one knew all the tracks in the movie (save for Come a Little Closer) :V

I love me some old rock and pop. Let's just agree that eiter way, James Gunn has good music taste.

    16. Nepenthe

      Nepenthe

The point of his mom dying is to set-up the emotional value of the tape player to Star-Lord, the same tape player he uses to kick off the song of said dancing scene.

      THE JETPACK HURTS MY NIPPLES

    18. Wraith

      Wraith

I feel like there were more subtle ways to get that across tho. Especially since the way his mom died comes up a few times.

It just...feels at odds with the tone the way they did it, but I feel that way about more than a few moments in this series.

  7. What's something you've watched where the sound effects/design have stuck out to you?

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

Cliche, but Dragon Ball. A lot of the sound effects/design really add onto the fighting in it. Especially in stuff like Resurrection F where the vocal themes switch out during the fight and mix with the effects.

    2. Wraith

      Wraith

Action films like the Raid that nail sound design so every punch, kick, stabbing  or gun shot feels really impactful always stick with me.

    3. Felix

      Felix

Pretty much any Star Wars movie, Kill la Kill, Jurassic Park and Akira are good examples for me.

That T-Rex roar never fails to give me chills every single time.

      Lord-Dreamerz

I think my fave is the Tohru. Regardless I liked all the characters. But I prefer more bratty girls over justice & order focused type characters.

  14. gonna go see GOTG vol. 2 today, hoping it's decent

    1. AlphaRuby

      AlphaRuby

      I think it's a perfectly enjoyable flick.

But I prefer the first film more, mostly because I think it handled the balance between comedy and drama better than Vol. 2.

    2. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

I'm sure it'll be good, but tbh I'm more excited for Spidey Homecoming

    3. Boomer

      Boomer

I definitely prefer the first film. The second one has pacing issues and it seems like they thought "Hey people liked X in the first film, let's do it MORE."

      Especially the beginning with Groot.

    4. Marcello

      Marcello

I liked it a lot. I thought it was better than the first.

    5. AlphaRuby

      AlphaRuby

@Boomer Reminds me of Iron Man 2, but not as bad.

    6. Boomer

      Boomer

Eh I'd say it's worse as Iron Man 2 was still fairly early in the MCU. By this point they should know what shit not to do.

I just mean in regards to how they do things. The film itself is bar better than Iron Man 2 :^)
