I think a lot of people should do some reading on Iizuka's actual contributions to this franchise. He's not had a perfect run by any means, but he deserves appreciation for helping to keep Sonic alive and fulfilling the desires of fans during SEGA years of turmoil. At worst, you can probably knock him for corporate speak at times, especially when directly pressed for answers by fans. But I think that's pretty standard. At times I used to knock him in the past but Ive learned to appreciate him a lot more because he has been one of the few consistent voices among the higher ups that actually does care about what happens to Sonic.

TheOcelot got a reaction from Monkey Destruction Switch in 6 min of new Sonic 1 Beta footage
Yeah, it's nice to see some minor differences compared to the final build. Sonic Team definitely made the right decision in removing some of the gimmicks such as the rotating spikes at the start of Spring Yard act1, and changing the amount required to earn an extra life to 100 rings instead of 50 rings, as 50 feels like too easy a target. The only objects I wish they hadn't removed is the UFO's in Marble Garden which looks really cool and the "wrecking ball" from GH act1 which is relatively harmless (doesn't look like it damages Sonic).
Hopefully one day we'll get to see beta footage from an even earlier build.
Oh and I couldn't resist doing a very quick video

TheOcelot reacted to itsamike in The final battle: Deem Bristow or Mike Pollock
You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.
The initial auditions for SONIC X were voice-matches. I was given clips of Deem Bristow and told to sound like him. The results of that audition speak for themselves, and are evident in the first several SONIC X episodes.
Several weeks into the run, the production team informed me they wanted to lighten the voice to better service the comedy, specifically requesting Jiminy Glick-style peaks and valleys. I obliged, to their satisfaction.
I'm an actor. (The goal of any working actor is to book as many rôles as possible, to the apparent dismay of some.) I adjust my performance to suit the script, and the desires of the director. In the franchise's darker games, I gave a darker read, as appropriate. For the lighter games, I play up the comedy to the best of my abilities.
You can't please everyone. I don't have to be your favorite. I respect whatever opinion you have, because it's your opinion, and it's personal, by definition. The opinion that matters most is that of the producers, who choose to keep hiring me, and presumably approve of my performance.

TheOcelot reacted to Monkey Destruction Switch in Worst Sonic game of the classic era
Please note that I'm not just referring to the "main" classic games, but to any Sonic game released before Sonic Adventure. And let's also go ahead and also exclude any edutainment games (Sonic's Schoolhouse, the Pico games, etc.) as well as any of the unusual arcade games like Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car or whatever.
I'm going to post three games that I think are contenders. In all honesty, maybe this will sound weird, but I don't truly dislike any of these games to a major degree - I think they all have their charms and positive points, but they're certainly significantly flawed.
    Knuckles Chaotix/Chaotix

Honestly, this one hurts. I wish I didn't have to put this one on the list. I love the characters in this game, and the aesthetics are out-of-this-world amazing. And yet, the gameplay is flawed enough that it unfortunately earns a place here.
First of all, the physics are oddly a little off-feeling and noticeably different from the rest of the Genesis titles. Not really sure why that's the case since this is technically a Genesis game, but for some reason, it happened. Secondly, the "ring power" gimmick tends to be more of an annoyance than a welcome addition. While it can be fun at times, most of the time it feels like a burden, like it's just there for the sake of having an "interesting" gimmick rather than serving much of a useful purpose. The game can sometimes feel like a bit of a chore to navigate, especially when you're playing certain characters; I would recommend playing Knuckles or Charmy because their gliding and flying abilities respectively make the game a lot more manageable. Though I haven't played with him that much, it seems Charmy's unlimited flying is actually a bit OP.
Lastly, but very significantly, the level design is just really lacking. The levels just don't seem to offer much challenge or exciting gameplay. They seem strangely devoid of major hazards and platforming challenges. Most of the "challenge" of the game is just dealing with annoyances caused by the ring link system and various irritating gimmicks in the levels.
The special stages of this game seem pretty cool, though just like with most special stages, I'm pretty bad at them. However, this game also has bonus stages, theoretically similar to S3&K (though with different gameplay), but in practice, their gameplay is nothing special and they're extremely unhelpful. They drain your rings every second and offer not-very-tempting-at-all prizes, just rings (which matter less in this game since there are no lives), points, and a few gimmicky items with only minor benefits. It makes you wonder what's even the point. It's especially egregious since you have to find hidden giant rings to access them, so you'd think you'd be getting a bit more for that.
Overall, an absolutely top-tier game in terms of aesthetics, but in terms of gameplay, it's sadly pretty poor. Its gameplay does have certain charms and isn't completely without value, but there are too many issues to ignore.
    Sonic Blast / G Sonic

I strangely have an attachment to this game due to the fact that, for who knows what reason, there was a plug-n-play console with only this game on it and me, my sisters, and our friend played it extensively in our childhood. So I probably like this game more than most people would, actually, but at the end of the day, I can't deny that it's rather mediocre. Unlike Knuckles' Chaotix, there's little chance I'll be able to write paragraph upon paragraph about this game because there just isn't much to say. The only remotely noteworthy thing about this title is that it has some pre-rendered CGI graphics, but that's not much to write home about in this case, especially in the case of Sonic and Knuckles' sprites, which seem strangely way too big for the screen and just don't look very good. In general, I'm not really a fan of this game's aesethics. There are a few good bits, but there's just something about them which is rather tacky. The level design is also pretty bland and doesn't have many engaging, interesting, or challenging sections. The special stages are also among the most simplistic in the series.
Overall, just an underwhelming and somewhat clunky game with some notable aesthetic flaws. I don't know what else to say. I don't hate it, it could be a lot worse, but it's just not very interesting.
    Sonic Labyrinth

A rather infamous game, but also a game that I frankly don't really feel equipped to talk about because I've played it very little. I started playing it to gear up for this post, but quickly hit a snag on the first boss, and because I was already tired from playing the previous two games for a while, I don't feel like trying to overcome that yet. From the little I have played of the main gameplay, I honestly don't think it's that bad. It has a certain amount of charm and fun to it. But on the other hand, I can't argue with the criticism most commonly leveled at this game, which is that Sonic is painfully slow when not spin-dashing. Because he is. That much I can attest to.
If anyone else wants to either criticize or defend this game, jump right in, because I'm not really the best-equipped. I'm just including it on this list because of its reputation.
    ---
So, which of these three games would you say is the worst of the classic era, or would you "nominate" another game entirely? Want to argue that one of these games is actually great? Whatever your opinion, have at it!

TheOcelot got a reaction from expansivelovestories in Sonic 30th predictions
Prior to Mania being announced (back in 2016) I'd predicted we'd get a Sonic 1 remake. So, I was sort of on the right track, I mean we did get a re-imagined Green Hill zone 😂 ...but when it comes to predicting what we'll get for the 30th anniversary, I haven't got a clue.
What I'd really like is a Sonic 3 Remaster, or Sonic Adventure 3, or Sonic Adventure remake, or a new 3D Sonic game made in the style of the classic games, or hell...I'd even be up for Sonic 4 Episode 3, but we know we're likely never getting any of these. So all I can envisage is yet another game with multiple gameplay styles likely consisting of; modern Sonic boost gameplay and classic Sonic where the physics are nothing like the Mega-Drive/Genesis games. I really want the boost gameplay to be dropped permanently but I just can't see SEGA having the courage to leave it behind, or even if they make a new game without it, I can easily see the boost formula returning in the next game.
It could well be another anniversary game, especially as both Gens & Mania were well received. Not that there's been enough good new content over the last 10 years to justify a new anniversary title (probably only Mania/Mania Plus qualifies). There really is no need for another anniversary game. I'd settle for a new 3D Sonic game with a new gameplay style (I would prefer no 2d game gamelay what-so-ever), a larger budget similar to Sonic Unleashed and see what Sonic Team can come up with...and yet even this seems unrealistic.
I just want a 3D Sonic game which I can enjoy replaying-that I want to go back and replay. I don't expect it to be perfect, but considering the only 3D games I enjoy replaying are Sonic Adventure 1&2 and Colours (which hardly has any good 3D gameplay worth noting) I'm really starved of a good 3D Sonic game.

    Hey all,
First off, thanks again for the warm welcome here! Glad to be amongst other Sonic fans :D.
I hinted at it on my intro, but I'm also a musician and do a lot of music and sound production work (and yes, it'd be a big dream of mine to work on an actual Sonic game XD), and a couple game covers from time to time 😊.
While I don't have much Sonic based works up yet, I do have a new work coming in March. For now, here's one of my popular VGM Remixes that takes the Sandopolis Zone music from Sonic 3 and Knuckles and makes it Ska! I had a lot of fun composing this as this was also my first ever venture into Ska as well.
    ENJOY!

TheOcelot reacted to UpCDownCLeftCRightC in A Level Design Approach to Encourage Better Gameplay
This is the basic thing that I advocate for.
I think the biggest problem with even the best version of 3D sonic gameplay we've seen, is that the gameplay is designed like the 2D sonic gameplay with 3D environments molded around it rather than a fully 3D gameplay. And I know it's hard, because sonic was designed originally in 2D and he by his nature tends to push forward and onwards at high speed along a linear path, even if there are multiple routes. It's hard to capture that essence without massive levels. In a sense, even though the boost games didnt get the feel right with the momentum physics, they did express what sonic ultimately wants to do outside of rolling, or at least the way sonic has been portrayed in most popular media.
So the best thing to do is to recontextualize the character and the concept. Not changing what he is.... but instead of the "gotta go fast" marketing and emphasis where he has to be blasting forward along a linear path all the time, try to emphasize more of sonic's agility and platforming skill rather than his pure straight line speed. Emphasize him moving acrobatically up, down, all around environments. The best example we have of this ironically is in a 2D game, with Sonic CD. Not only that gameplay template as inspiration for 3D design but also how sonic moved in the animated cutscenes. He didnt just blast forward all the time, he skillfully navigated obstacles and moved in a variety of ways, often using the environment to his advantage while finding ways to keep up his pace. That's what 3D sonic gameplay should be about at its core. Maintaining flow, while having the freedom to travel anywhere. And it's also why building huge island zones as big playground maps would be the most natural fit. This "flow" is a primary component of the gameplay feel of the classic games and why they are so repayable but I think the potential is even greater in 3D. In sonic 3, as you moved through the zones, if you notice the backgrounds and the environments change. You start out at one point in the zone and what you see in the distance, you ultimately come across later whether it be in act 2 or in a later level...although the trek isnt as visceral because you're locked onto a 2D plane. In 3D this feeling would be fully enhanced because the interesting thing you see in the distant background, you can actually see yourself moving to. You can point to wherever you want to go and just go.

I wish I could talk to ST about this sometimes.
