At least that's SOME form of S3+K acknowledgement. If they put in Tails' flying ability as well, I'll consider this a pretty solid rerelease.

On my youtube channel I mainly upload playthroughs of the classic Sonic games and because I stated my videos as "made for kids" (don't think I could get away with saying made for adults without being fined), all my comments are now turned-off. One of the cool things about uploading videos is reading and replying to comments, but I won't be able to do that anymore. All my exisiting comments will be deleted in 30 days. So my channel is now pretty useless.
Fuck COPPA and fuck the idiots who made it happen.

TheOcelot got a reaction from MainJP in Highs and lows of Sonic in the 2010s
The most significant low-point in this decade which finished with an amazing high-point started with Sonic 4 and finished with Mania.
I'm not a fan of Sonic 4 (which I've made perfectly clear countless times on this forum), but I am grateful it exists, because I'm firmly in the belief we never would have gotten Sonic Mania (with the amazing amount of love, care & attention and it's deserved success) if it wasn't for Sonic 4 and the massive backlash which ensude.
Whilst Sonic 4 Ep1 was everything I didn't want in a hyperthetical sequel to the classics, if it wasn't for SEGA deciding to bring back Metal Sonic-teasing his return at the end of ep1, we never would have gotten a new release of Sonic CD (as SEGA wanted to link Sonic CD to Sonic 4's backstory). What was originally gonna be a crappy emulation/port gave Taxman (Christian Whitehead) the chance to show-off his Sonic CD mobile proof of concept, which led to the release of the definitive version of this game (improved physics, 16:9 widescreen, unlockable Tails). Then we got Sonic 4 Ep2 which was an improvement over ep1 but still flawed. Taxman who obviously made a good impression with SEGA for his work on the CD remaster then teamed up with Stealth to make the mobile remasters of Sonic 1 (with unlockable Tails & Knuckles) & Sonic 2 (Boss Rush mode & Hidden Palace reimagined etc). Then submitted the 3K proof of concept which was not taken up by SEGA and then they got the chance to make Sonic Mania in 2017. Thanks to Mania's success they then got the chance in 2018 to add missing/scrapped content with a new release along with a gorgeous physical release, and the brillaint Sonic Mania Adventures created to help promote Sonic Mania Plus and the three or four Mania Adventures extended remixes done by Tee & Jun.
So for me as a classic fan, the decade started with a terrible low point (classic Sonic's gameplay in Gens not being much better than Sonic 4's didn't help either), and ended on such a high with Mania's success.
Whilst classic Sonic ended the decade on a high, Modern Sonic has gone in the opposite direction. What started well with Colour & Gens (which is considered a decent game even though I'm not it's biggest fan), went down-hill with SLW, Rise of Lyric (which could have been a decent game if SEGA hadn't fucked over Big Red Button who developed it) and Sonic Forces which was meh at best. Team Sonic Racing was at least decent and I like the Overdrive animated shorts.

TheOcelot reacted to Wrapped in Black in Highs and lows of Sonic in the 2010s
I had to check and make sure sonic 4 released in 2010. that's still king shit so technically we've been on the up since the start. no matter how bad sonic forces or whatever is it cant top sonic 4 in just being a waste of brain space for everybody remotely involved.
I don't really have to talk about every main series game I didn't like because sonic 4 represents the cynical, calculated pandering that defines most of what I don't like about this decade of Sonic perfectly. Wearing the skin of acclaimed Sonic games while refusing to address the actual structural problems with the way the newer games work not only represented a startling lack of understanding about...everything, but it degraded the iconography many players held so dear. I never want to see a green hill zone or a chubby Sonic ever again. I don't want to see Shadow fight Sonic. I don't want to hear Chemical Plant or Supporting Me or Rooftop Run. I don't want to see budget cuts and lack of content sold as 'returning to Sonic's roots' and 'trimming the BS'
Biggest thing I want for the series next decade is creativity. I just want a new, fully featured action platformer with Sonic on the box.

But I promised myself would focus on the positives this post and to be honest there was a lot to like even if there wasn't much I loved. Generations, ASRT and Mania are all games that brought me a lot of joy: Specifically in bringing back that arcadey level of replayability that last decade...kinda lacked in most of the games. My personal tastes changed a lot over the course of the decade so the fact that Gens and ASRT specifically remained in my good graces is pretty good.
Mania gets it's own spot here for being the one game to come out in almost 2 decades where Sonic is just a joy to control again with no asterisks. That would have been enough on it's own but the level design is on another level even compared to the best games in the series or in the genre. It's just so dense filled with branching paths, mini challenges and secrets everywhere. It feels like I'm playing the game wrong when I speed run it just because there's so much to play around with.
I don't like a lot of things about Colors but I do like the feel-good atmosphere of the game a lot and it has one of the strongest visual identities of the series despite the console it's on and the short dev time giving it every excuse not to.
The shorts are wonderful. My favorite was the Mania Adventures christmas special for getting to the heart of why Amy is one of the best characters. I hope all the noise about her lately pays off and I get to see more of her next decade.
Tyson Hesse in general has been a high point in making a character that's been rendered stiffly for far too long and reminding everyone just how perfect his design is.

Speaking of art: The comics. Post reboot Archie, Mega Drive, IDW: I actually dug the hell out of all of that stuff and reading through Ian's early work today reminded me of just how much he's improved over time as a writer. Artists I've been watching for 10 years improving to the point where they came to IDW delivering top quality stuff.

And well, shit, there's my favorite part of the decade right there: Seeing creatives who invested so much into Sonic getting their payoff by not just getting their fucking bread from Sega but improving the series for the better. They toiled through the cynicism in and out of the fanbase saying their fangames wouldn't ever get finished or that their art was cringe and not worth indulging in and they gave us some of the best Sonic content we've had in decades on every front: Comics, games, and animation. I genuinely believe the series is gonna be on the come up next decade thanks to this push.

TheOcelot reacted to Tarnish in So are Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations not considered good games now?
My complaint is that it sucked at both things it tried to excel at: it sucked as a 3D "modern" Sonic game, mostly because that style was never compelling to me in the first place, and it sucked as a 2D "classic" Sonic game, mostly due to unsatisfying physics (and a ton of other miscellaneous things). Graphics and music was all it ever had going for it, really. Everything else (story, voice acting, gameplay) was ranging from mediocre to awful. (To this day, the final boss fight is more confusing than anything.)

That, and the fact that although it was supposed to be a celebration of the past of the franchise, a lot of times it felt more like a dumbing down of it.

TheOcelot reacted to Badnik Mechanic in Team Sonic Racing: Driving For Hope (Community Event)
For the past month, I've been organising a bit of a bit online event for the community to participate in two nights of Team Sonic Racing fun and games.
The idea initially was to simply pick a date and time to give a boost to the online community so we could try and have some online antics with lots of new people instead of the usual loyal following. Well... It's since grown into something more.
I was able to recruit a number of well known Sonic Streamers and personalities in the community who have agreed to take a time slot to Stream TSR and try to raise money for the Charity Special Effect.
    Date & Time
We're streaming tomorrow (Monday 16th December) at 4PM (GMT)/11AM (EST) for a few hours, then picking up the next day (Tuesday 17th December) at 5PM (GMT)/12PM (EST) for another few hours.
    Full Schedule
The full schedule, who is streaming and on which version is as follows (Subject to any unforeseen changes).

    How can I help?
Obviously, if you fancy watching either of the streamers and joining in with the chat, that's always a huge moral booster, but we're also taking donations for Special Effect during the event. Any donation is welcome and the money goes directly to Special Effect via Tiltify.
But what we'd also love to see is people actually joining us online and joining our races so you get to race with us during our respective live-stream, or just come online and lets give the game some love and support with some fresh players.
    Who is Special Effect?
Special Effect is a UK based charity that helps people with disabilities get into gaming, they happen to be supported by both Sega and Sumo digital and do some incredible work. More information on their website.
    How can I donate?
Each streamer should have a very obvious icon or sign post to how you can donate... Alternatively, feel free to use this link.
    Further Information
We don't have a site or a twitter account for this event, the next best thing would be to either follow myself or Sam since we'll be tweeting the various times/moments when someone is online and if there are any changes, as will any of the other streamers during the event.

Any questions, fire away and I'll try to answer asap!

TheOcelot reacted to Sean in New Holiday animation coming tomorrow!
I'm just tired of any little good thing that pops up that people (including myself!) use as reason to lament the state of the franchise. Like I get it because I've done that before too, probably more recently than my brain is remembering in fact, but I tried stopping because it got obnoxious and because it actively hindered my ability to wholly enjoy something that comes along without getting mopey over it. It is disappointing that every single topic including this one has to have people going "why can't Sega fire Sonic Team and replace them with people who have never been involved in video games in their entire career" when we already talk about how bad they are in 99% of topics. Would it hurt to dial that number down to 98% instead?

Also before anyone misinterprets what I'm saying here, I'm not saying you can't ever rant about the series in general, lord knows I have bones to pick with Sega's handling of Sonic much like most of you... but in my opinion, a topic about Sega doing a cute Sonic-related thing for pure funsies might not be the right place for it.

These animated shorts are definitely one of the best things to come out of SEGA over the last few years and It's awesome someone from SEGA (I forget whom) confirmed they plan to make more of these for future games.

Obviously the fanbase holds a lot of affection for Chao, so it was a good choice to bring them back. I'll admit this isn't my favorite short but it's still good.
I kinda wish there was at least a tiny bit of dialogue for Sonic. Yeah, I know they probably don't have the budget. Hopefully we'll get dialogue in future shorts.
