I think Sonic Team needs to try something completely new in terms of gameplay. The boost gameplay has long overstayed it's welcome. The classic Sonic gameplay in both Gens & Forces wasn't fun due the physics being complete shit. Keep the 2d gameplay for separate games like with Mania. As for the avatar, it was probably the most interesting gameplay in Forces but there's really no need for it to return. Maybe just give Modern Sonic alternative outfits and I guess that would be okay.
Considering how awesome and successful Mania has been, I just want for once to be able to say this about a 3D Sonic game again. I want a full 3D game (2D not needed) maybe with 2 or 3 playable characters.  Perhaps Sonic, Tails & Knuckles (also maybe Shadow). Just a fun game with creative level design. Doesn't need to be insane boost-game speed fast. Just fun/rewarding platforming with a bit of speed. Keep Eggman as the main villian.
That's what I want. As to what we'll probably get; more boost gameplay, hopefully with better level design. Classic Sonic will likely return-especially as it will be the 30th anniversary soon, so I guess the drop-dash will also return. I would like to see the chao garden make an appearance...
Hope Sonic Team are cooking up something special for the 30th anniversary.

Really enjoyed this, I'm a sucker for the little "cinematic" touches like the prologue, late title and credits over the first stage, love that stuff.
Beyond that it seems really well designed, one of those annoying compliments where I would love to sing more specific praises but it's just like... it feels like a Sonic game, you did it, lol.  Personally I slightly prefer the Sonic Chaos remake's CD/Mania-esque soundtrack quality, but that's just a personal taste thing, I can fully respect the decision to limit the soundtrack remake to 16-bit and going so strictly for that whole aesthetic. The audio and visuals both seem flawless in their execution so far.
Love how you've upgraded the bosses and the special stage, the surprise inclusion of
    - though does make me curious if there are any plans to include the special stage 1/3/5 style anywhere else in the game (assuming you intend to keep the special stage gameplay consistent, which makes sense to me).

Just watched the new trailer. Wow, Sonic actually looks like Sonic this time, kinda. Still think the blue arms look dumb and the section between Sonic's eyes doesn't look right/looks kinda weird when he looks forward...

...but overall it's a good improvement.

@TheOcelot Would you look at that, us skeptics jumped the gun again. Seems like it really is a coincidence.
    Straight from discord.

    Sorry Taxman.
However, Stealth is actually wrong about the pseudo "Drop Dash" being a bug. The tech wizards on Retro say it was intentionally coded that way and the behavior is intentional.

You need to press and hold up and jump - don't release until Sonic hits the ground - in order to get the drop-dash to work.
Pretty awesome of Sonic Team to have first conceived the drop-dash back in 1993 and Taxman is a fucking legend for bringing it back in Mania.
Did a quick video showing the drop-dash:
This along with the revelation the PC replacement tracks actually came first before the MJ music makes this one of the best prototype discoveries ever.

It's not exactly a leap in logic to assume Taxman and his team got shown concepts from the MD/Genesis titles. As two members pointed out on Retro, Taxman had access to design documents regarding the scrapped R2 stage from Sonic CD and even managed to get old Digitizer files from Sonic CD, with the enemies intended for R2:
    https://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?threads/sonic-cd-now-out-for-everything-except-nintendo-consoles.26302/page-158#post-733117
    http://info.sonicretro.org/R2
Taxman also intended to create a brand new level for the Sonic CD remake called Desert Dazzle that was based off of the scrapped level Sand Shower Zone from Sonic 2. This level would go onto be the basis of Mirage Saloon Zone in Mania, even reusing some of the graphics.
    http://info.sonicretro.org/Desert_Dazzle
If he had access to unreleased CD and 2 assets why would it be far fetched for him to have been shown scrapped concepts from Sonic 3?

    He knew.
I don't believe for a second Taxman didn't know about the drop-dash being a cancelled concept for Sonic 3. His twitter reply is pretty short and felt more like a cheeky response. Remember Mania/Mania Plus contains lots of cancelled concepts; the beta Sonic 2 running animation, the scrapped Sonic CD Metallic Madness Eggman boss beta design etc. So the idea of bringing back the drop-dash - a scrapped concept - is exactly the kind of thing they were going for in Mania. As to when Taxman learned about the drop-dash being a scrapped concept from Sonic 3 is anyone's guess.
I guess one could argue Iizuka-san may have suggested it (he might have remembered it from having worked on Sonic 3), but if that's the case why didn't they bring back the drop-dash concept earlier (they've had 20+ years to bring it back)? Iizuka-san could have suggested it for Sonic 4 for example, or Sonic Generations. He said he chose to implement the drop-dash (for classic Sonic) in Sonic Forces whilst Mania was still in development, so the drop-dash certainly made an impression on him!

Did a full playthrough of the prototype.
Had to improvise (create platforms using debug mode) in order to beat the Marble Garden act 2 boss.
To activate Debug Mode: Enter 01, 03, 05, 07 in the sound-test on the level select screen. Then select an act, hold A and press start.

Sounds pretty good to me. Might actually prefer this over the original.
Do you like it when they do these visual performances to accompany the music?
    So we've had an SA1 & Sonic R remix. I wonder what's next.

TheOcelot reacted to Dreadknux in Happy 19th Birthday TSS! Here's Some New Forum Skins!
Well well well. It's been a while since I posted an update here, isn't it!? Howdy folks, how's it going?

Today - 24 October (as it now is in the UK - don't you Americans get me on a technicality now! ) is a special day in the SSMB/TSS calendar. Namely, that it's this website's birthday! We launched in the Year 2000 - when everyone was just getting over the non-threat of the Y2K Bug, The Matrix was the biggest movie on the planet and everyone was catching on the Y2K aesthetic.
    That makes us 19 YEARS OLD. Whaaaaaat. This site is four years older than me when I first launched it. o_o;
The next year will be the big 2-0, so I'm plotting some things for us all to do during that time. In the meantime, I thought I'd give this forum a little love as I realised that I had spent so much time tarting up the main site that the SSMB needed a new lick of paint.
So here we are! A brand new, modern 'Sonical' theme for 2020! Do you like it? I spent a lot of time tweaking it for mobile use as well, so please let me know your feedback (any bugs should be reported in the Feedback and Bugs forum as per usual). And... for those of you that like your Night Mode settings, I also created a new 'Sonical Dark' theme too!
All of the existing SSMB character themes will be converted into this new modern style soon, but for now I'm keeping them up just in case you really like the Shadow theme or something... But Sonical will be the new default, and I really recommend Sonical Dark too. I hope you enjoy them!
Please feel free to celebrate our birthday with us in any way you like! I know how creative this forum can be! If you fancy making anything - art, music, banners, whatever - or if you want to just write some fancy words - please be my guest. I love hearing about your experiences on this site.
Anyway, I'm off to have a bit of a lie down and paw through some old topics and news stories. Happy Birthday TSS!
