  1. The more I dwell on it, the more I really dislike Sonic Unleashed

I go the opposite way honestly. I've always really liked it but in recent years the sheer effort and scale that went into it has only become more pronounced compared to the likes of Forces. For me, the boost formula was never topped after it and sadly I'm including Generations, as much as that game is perhaps a more pure Sonic experience.

      nah that game slaps

Whilst I think it got unfairly trashed by critics back in 2008, I also dislike it. Atmospherically, it's great and that shouldn't be understated. But the gameplay is urgh. Daytime levels are a rough outing. They're fine, but only the regular acts and not the optional ones. The optional/mini ones are cheap, trial and error messes. The nighttime levels are where the game falls apart. Way too long, slow and repetitive (especially before you get any upgrades). Even if they're not offensively bad, they make up the bulk of your playtime and that's a problem. The rest is split between fairly decent regular daytime levels, fairly awful mini daytimes levels, plodding around way too many hubs and hunting for collectibles (often in daytime levels where they're a nightmare).... It's really, really crappily designed as a package when you look at it that way and makes the harsh critical reception very understandable.

Unleashed is not a bad game. It's mess of very different ideas that that don't go together and that makes it worse than the sum of its parts. If you only play the game on a complete save file, wherein you are free to select only the levels you like, don't need to hunt for collectibles, don't get lost in the too many hubs and can deal with the nighttime stages quickly because you're high level, it's not so bad. Just look at the Unleashed Project mod for Generations; it's brilliant. But try to play Unleashed itself from start to finish and it's actually a pretty bad experience.

I remember when this forum dickrode Unleashed super hard, it was obnoxious because it basically got a free pass for being "ambitious and full of effort" even though the effort went into things like the Werehog or unmemorable NPCs and hubs rather than actually making the controls and level design good.

@Semi-colon e I wonder if I can freely say that "Black Knight had a forgettable story story and characters" without being lynched. I dunno how that game ended up in a pedestal like Unleashed signs here.

@Blue Blood I dunno, I never even played that or Secret Rings. I think it might have been a vocal minority.

It was vocal group indeed. Sonic's characterisation and role in the story were apparently very deep and totally perfect, because Sonic was willing to play the bad guy (even though he wasn't) and Griffith gave his best performance (even though it was as dull and boring as ever).

Unleashed is visually the best looking game IMO. The intro cutscene looks so darn cool. Story is passable. The overall gameplay is very flawed; both Werehog and Boost. I hate to say this but the Werehog gameplay is more enjoyable-if frustratingly slow.

Unleashed is a game I really want to like, but just when I reach a section which I can enjoy, I then get to another part which sucks.

Sonic Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game of all time, but there's one annoying little thing about it that always bugged me and I don't see many fans talking about: the frame rate dips. Jungle Joyride and Dark Gaia Phoenix are almost unplayable in the X360 version and Sega never released a update that actually works to fix this.

I'd be dead if I had to take a shot every time someone defaults to "ambition" as their reason for loving it. I don't really buy into the passion argument anymore. Sonic Unleashed was an absolute chore to finish, less than a third of the game was what I'd consider enjoyable, and I don't think the pretty graphics and "world building" in the hub areas are enough to redeem it.

Honestly, the recent fervor to defend it as some kind of lost masterpiece is what's making me go back to it and reconsider it's position as some kind of martyr of unfair criticism. It's story is even worse than I remember, too.

I've played it from the start 3 different times and enjoyed it more every time. Jerry rigging the levels into Generations only ever sucked most of the charm out.

I hated the ambition and potential argument from day one. Why praise the game for things it never does?

I really do think Unleashed's massive popularity In the Fandom is mostly because of the stuff that came after it rather than its own merits (you will ALWAYS get comparisons from fans on Twitter if you bring up Colors and Gens for instance). Not saying one can't genuinely like it it's not a 06 disaster or anything but it's a big factor

Unleashed is like a 10-15 hour game but it's only good parts can be speed through in 30 minutes (as the Gens mod has shown).

We've literally come full circle with this game haven't we? We went from "The public are too hard on this game" to "the fans are too lenient on this game"

Its absolutely hilarious how there's really no onsensus on this game at all lmao.
