    1. Kiah

      That is absolutely adorable! ?

  2. Meant to post something about this a while ago, but go check out my friend's student film! I helped out with some of the animation on this

  3. Is this real? 'Cause, uh..

I will always love that floating island bit.

      The Master

Its real. This was his pitch for a Sonic movie. He screwed over Ben Hurst (Sonic SatAM writer) to do it too.

    4. Forte-Metallix

The savior of the franchise, ladies and gentlemen.

This is what he's fighting* for.

*Not doing anything but whine and brag on Twitter.

    5. Osmium

why does Sonic sound like he's 5? Was that supposed to be when he was a kid or something?

    6. Tara

Worth a note that it's just a pitch so it's not supposed to look anywhere even close to finished.  It's just supposed to showcase a concept and convince companies to finance it.

That being said, it's still not a particularly impressive pitch, and having a child voice Sonic was probably not the best idea.

  4. I just started playing Super Mario 3D Land out of curiosity anfter finding my brother's copy lying around, and wow this is like the worst feeling Mario game I've ever played, both thematically and control wise. And here I thought 3D World was the worst.

It's funny, I just got my 3DS a few weeks ago, and got New Super Mario Bros 2, and my first thought after "Man, this is every bit as creatively bankrupt as I thought it was gonna be" was "Wow, using the D-pad sure gives me some great hand cramps".

Mario really hit rock bottom back then didn't he?

    3. Ferno

If that was rock bottom then Mario really has it good.

    4. Nightly

Oh yea, though honestly I think 3D Land is even worse than the New Super Mario games cause at least in the 2D ones you have a competent control scheme. Everything feels so imprecise in 3D Land due to it trying to mix 2D level design in a 3D space.

This just makes me even happier that Odyssey is a thing.

    5. shdowhunt60

At least I got Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon to wash my mouth out with at the end of it. Good game, made by people who actually tried.

    6. Dejimon11

There's something hilarious about this status.

    7. Nightly
    8. Nix

This status hurts my head.  3D Land and 3D World are incredible.  The controls are really tight and they both have some absolutely fantastic level design.

    9. Celestia

Honestly what strikes me about 3DW (never played 3DL) is that it was the first time jumping on enemies actually felt...reasonable in a 3D game. Not just in Mario games but any 3D platformer. It's such a minor thing but it really stood out to me.

I can understand not liking how they restricted you to 8 directions, but I thought it still felt pretty natural and precise.

    10. Nightly

To clarify I really don't think either of these 2 games are super bad in general, especially not 3D World, but compared to other Mario games I think they're really weak.

In 3DW's case, it's a perfectly competent control scheme, but the fact that you're so restricted in direction and movement makes it just feel really underwhelming to me. I don't feel like I'm controlling Mario however I want like in 64/Sunshine/Galaxy, I feel like I'm following a specific set of rules and I'm never allowed to do anything more. It's perfectly playable though due to the fact that it's made with more 3D sensibilities in mind.

3DL on the other hand, at least from what I've played so far, is way imprecise. I keep finding myself overshooting and undershooting jumps and having to reposition myself all the time by hovering in the air with the tanooki suit. I don't know what they did in 3DW to make jumping on enemies actually work, but it helped bring up the control scheme from being really flawed imo to something at least playable.

Maybe I'm just not used to it , and that's probably true, but even still I just feel like these controls are really lackluster.

Oh to clarify something else, when I said that I thought that 3D World was the worst, that's compared to other 3D Mario games. Also I think it's fine game and can be fun at points, so that really says something about Mario games when one of my least favourite games in the series is still good fun.

  5. I just updated my art thread with a bunch of my recent art

    1. Silencer226

You have a very very very nice gallery of art.

    2. Nightly

      Oh thank you ^^

  6. It's been a bit since I last updated this, so here's a buuuunch of arts. Edit: I just realized that I've never linked my art blog on here. So uh, here it is.
  7. This song has been stuck in my head like all day.

I just found out about this artist recently and I really like what I've heard so far.

  8. No other Sonic 06 review is ever gonna top this.

  9. This is a suuuper minor thing, but I noticed in the footage that after you hit a horizontal spring when in a ball you uncurl. I hope that gets fixed before release. Also I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be able to walk on the steel fencing in this one bit.
  10. I'm so glad Sonic Mania's a thing.

If it was just Forces coming out this year I'd just be really sad seeing one of my favourite franchises growing up have absolutely no idea what to do with itself.

    2. Osmium

would you be gone now if Mania wasn't a thing

    3. Soniman

It's also kinda sad how this is said by someone everytime we learn something new about Forces lol

    4. Nightly

@ShroomZed I wouldn't have come back and stuck around this long in the first place if not for Mania.

@Soniman Well I'm not gonna lie about how I feel. Forces doesn't look very good to me and Mania is a blessing.

      Beautiful! :)

    2. The drunkard from space!

      The drunkard from space!

Not quite Tyson's style but I think the way it's drawn still has style and charm to it. Very good!

    3. Nightly

Yea, I was mostly just drawing these off of memory so there's a lot of stuff off about these. His head needs to be a bit more squarish and something different has to be done about the eyes, I'm not too sure what though.

Either way tho I'm glad you like it =P

    4. Osmium

yeah these are extremely competently drawn, but to be honest these look nothing like Tyson's Sonics. It's more your own style than anything.

    5. The drunkard from space!

      The drunkard from space!

Nightly, if you ever do draw Tyson's style that'd be great! But personally, I don't want you to lose the style in which you draw Sonic. It's really good! Don't give up your style in favor of someone elses. I'd like to see more Sonic characters drawn in your style. A Nightly styled Shadow would look badass and adorable at the same time, infact take that as a request Lol. Keep up the good work!

  14. So yea, that new trailer is just like the hypest thing.

      I've seen hype-er(?)

...Is that even a word? To the dictionary!

  15. I'm really glad that this guy's videos are showing people the importance of character construction, as opposed to like every other "how to draw" video on Youtube where they just draw/trace lines and don't actually teach you anything.

    1. Osmium

Most definitely agree. Nothing peeves me more than a "how to draw" video that just does the silhouette. That's not really teaching you how to draw the character, that's just following lines.

  17. 1. How long have you been a Sonic fan? I wanna say since around 2002 or 2003. I don't remember how I first discovered Sonic, if it was through just word of mouth, Sonic X, or the games, but I must've been either 7 or 8. I fell out of the fanbase around when Sonic Lost World was coming out and got back into it late 2015, mostly out of curiosity as to why a Sonic game hadn't been announced yet at that time. 2. What was your first Sonic game? Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I got it alongside my Gamecube for what I think was my birthday. That game was my jam as a kid~ My opinion has changed a lot on it since then though, but I still have a soft spot for it. It was the first game I ever played that really engrossed me and didn't feel like I was just playing it just cause that's what you do with video games. 3. What initially attracted you to the Sonic the Hedgehog series? I think it was mostly Sonic's design and personality, as well as the fast paced energy of the games. 4. How many Sonic games do you currently have? Feel free to count duplicates! If we're counting compilations as single games then 45 in total. 5. Are you more of a Classic or Modern Sonic fan? I'm mostly just a Classic fan. Imo those games are much more solidly made, well thought out, and have an appealing consistent aesthetic and tone. That said, I do have a soft spot for the games from SA1-Sonic Rush, and a couple of the games after that I like ok enough. 6. Who is your favorite Sonic character and why? That'd have to go to Sonic, Classic Sonic specifically. I feel like that design works best with his cocky attitude as he has a really cute look to him which helps offset it and make him less obnoxious which I feel like Modern Sonic can be sometimes. Also his design in general is just fantastic and quite possibly the best character design ever made. I could write a whole paragraph explaining why, but instead I'll just link this: 7. What is your favorite continuity? (SEGA, Archie, SatAM, OVA etc.) The official Sega continuity up to SA1. 8. What is your favorite Sonic quote? This can come from any character. It'd definitely have to be "Talk about low budget flights, no food or movies... I'm outta here!" As a kid I thought it was super cool and I loved it. As an adult I think it's endearingly cheesy and I love it even more. 9. What is your favorite story in the Sonic franchise? Probably S3&K's story. It told a neat little story that pushed you along through the game, gave context to things, and gave the characters a chance to shine, all without any of that dialogue stuff. 10. What is your favorite Sonic cartoon? The Sonic OVA. Imo that is the perfect translation of the games to animation, minus the weird Princess Sara, Planet Freedom stuff (It works for that OVA though so whatevs). 11. What is your favorite cutscene from a Sonic game? I don't think I need to explain why this is the best thing ever. 12. What is your favorite Sonic game? Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I'd explain why, but I'd really just be beating a dead horse. I like it for the same reasons everyone else does lol. 13. What is your favorite Sonic track both vocal and non-vocal? For non-vocal I have no clue, there are so many phenomenal tracks I can't pick a favourite. There is one though which, I dunno if I'd say is my "favourite", but is one I really love and find myself going back to time and time again. God this takes me back. It's the only Sonic track that I have such vivid memories with. Just hearing it reminds me of flipping through the comics and art in Mega Collection, and just like being totally engrossed by Yuji Uekawa's drawings. This track to me really encapsulates the feeling of my playing Sonic in my childhood. As for vocal tracks, honestly I have a real soft spot for Believe in Myself from SA1. 14. What is your favorite move from Sonic or any other playable character? Probably the insta-shield. It was a great way to make Sonic stand out from the other characters in S3&K. 15. What is your favorite Sonic soundtrack? SA1's with Sonic CD's JP soundtrack reeeeally close behind. 16. What is your favorite image from the series? Please post it here and mention the source. I honestly can't pick a favourite, there's so many iconic drawings and shots that I'd feel like I'm leaving something important out if I tried to narrow it down. 17. Which is your favorite voice acting cast? I really feel like the original Drummond cast really fit their characters well (with the exception of Deem Bristow. Not that he's bad, but I feel like Mike Pollock fits Eggman much better). It's a shame the direction they were given during that time wasn't, like, good. 18. What is your main/favorite Sonic head-canon? I don't really do head-canon stuff, sorry. 19. What is your favorite recurring level theme (e.g. green forest, space stations, lava ruins)? Probably ancient ruin type levels. Marble Zone, Aquatic Ruin Zone, Lost World. S'pretty good stuff. 20. What is your favorite level from the Sonic games? It's a tossup between Starlight Zone, Aquatic Ruin Zone, Ice Cap Zone, and Ice Paradise Zone. Though I have a feeling when Mania comes out, Studiopolis Zone is gonna take 1st place for me. 21. What was your most memorable year in the franchise for you? Not entirely for good reasons, but probably late 2005-2006 with the buildup to Sonic 06. I was just a kid and up until that point I enjoyed every mainline Sonic game that came out till that point. Then Shadow the Hedgehog came out and when I first heard about it I was like "ooh, ok, uh.. that's kinda weird but whatever", and later when I played it I was left kinda disappointed, but I just kinda figured that it just wan't for me and not that it was a bad game (it's a bad game). Also I thought "well it's a spinoff (I guess??) and I'm sure the next one will be better." Then the advertising campaign for 06 started and I was so excited, I had no reason not to be at the time. I have such fond memories watching the trailers for it on tv, and talking with friends about it on the playground about what we were excited for in it and how we'd hope it'd be like. I also have this really distinct memory playing the demo in a WalMart and having a conversation with this other kid about Sonic and how my best friend at the time managed to raise a Tails Chao. Then eventually a little after the game came out, I bought it as a "present" for my uncle (I didn't have a 360 at the time but he did, so I basically just bought it for myself to play at his house lol). I didn't see any of the reviews for it at the time, or if I had I didn't pay them any heed, and I put it in the 360 and started playing. It was like a slow burn noticing all the problems with the game. I was like "oh geez these loading screens are taking a long time", "why is sonic so like slippery and slow?", Why are there so many loading screens in a row??", "WHAT CAN'T I JUMP INTO ENEMIES???", and "I CAN'T STOP RUNNING OFF OF THIS LOOP AND DYING AND AS SOON AS I GET ON IT I CAN'T MOVE AND ASDFLASFALNSFHRGRF." I put the controller down and that was it, the first time I've ever been truly disappointed by a video game. My childhood sense of wonder and joy, shattered. 22. What is your one favorite thing in the entire Sonic the Hedgehog series? The momentum and physics based gameplay of the classics is probably the main thing outside of the aesthetics of the classic games. It's the main thing that keeps bringing me back to play them. It's a shame they've never fully brought that kind of gameplay and freedom into 3D. 23. What is your favorite trailer for Sonic games revealed? 24. There are many versions of the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog in the quarter century he has existed across various forms of media. Which one is your favorite version of Sonic and why? Probably Saturn-era Sonic. His look is much more streamlined and refined than how he looked on the Genesis and it's much more visibly striking imo. It's also more flexible, making it possible for more interesting poses. 25. More than a quarter of a century and the Blue Blur is still running! What keeps you around at this point? Honestly, if not for Mania and its sequels (hopefully), I might not still be here.
  18. I might be singing a different tune if I was a big fan of Don Bluth's stuff, but honestly I don't think something like this should be included. It was intended to be a game first and foremost, and just cause it has 2d animation in it I don't think that should make it qualify as a film. It was intended to be interacted with and not watched passively, and while you can do that, it wasn't the original intent. It's comparable to a game like Heavy Rain or something to me. The core concept is the same, you're just pressing the buttons at the right time or going in a certain direction and then a preset animation plays to tell the story, but I wouldn't call that a film and I don't think many other people would either.
  19. So I went and rewatched the entirety of Tex Avery's MGM output the other day and picked out a bunch of great ones I forgot about last time. I also remembered some other fantastic shorts.
