  1. i think the biggest evidence of the effect quarantine's having on me is that i'm genuinely starting to enjoy Forces's music.

it's not high art or anything, and the Brony Rave (thanks azoo) in particular is just embarrassing more than anything, but the rest of it's... not as bad as i remember? even got some right ol' bangers in there, Egg Gate and Network Terminal 1 and 2 especially.

even the classic music's pretty good (green hill aside)! like i distinctly remember writing a huge rant on this specific song in a discord once, but here i am jamming the fuck out. a lot can change in 4 years, good lord lol

It's not bad at all, but I'm not a fan of the choice they made to go techno. Techno does not scream "rebellion" to me. Punk rock does! Which wouldn't be far off from what they already made for the series. Also just not a huge fan of the majority of this soundtrack, but Episode Shadow OST slaps

    2. Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

      Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

my problem with the techno is that it almost feels like... what's the word...... shock value-ish? as if they were specifically written with the intent of getting responses like "YOOOOOOOOOO SONIC'S GOT BANGERS" "BASS DROP IN A SONIC GAME" "HOLY SHIT THIS IS FLAMES" rather than just Making A Good Song. it's trying too hard to "slap" and "bump" and just falls flat on its ass cuz it's clearly not ohtani and co's comfort zone.

...come to think of it, i almost feel like Shadow and Forces have their soundtracks swapped around. like, Shadow should be the one with the drum and bass rave stuff (like in his SA2 levels) and Forces should be the one with the edgy indulgent Schlock Rock, lmao

all of the obvious rebellion genres are etched into sonic's DNA already aside from maybe hip hop. the techno focus was probably because of infinite's powers

  2. not upset that roger's back, even as someone that never liked him - i'm just glad his performance isn't dying in the same ditch as pontaff's scripts. like, shit man, maybe this next game'll finally make him click with me now that they're gone?

or maybe it'll just be more of the same shlock from a different source, who knows.

Yeah im not getting my hopes up.

  3. looking back, i think my biggest regret regarding my time here was like... the "Depression Kong" stuff. i was 12 or 13 when i came up with that moniker (15 when i brought it here), and it took me way, way too long to realize why jokes about depression and self-harm and shit were a massive yikes.

actually, y'know what? i probably have you guys to thank for that. a lot of people here genuinely thought i had issues (even got rightfully striked for it once, haha) and the more often it happened, the more i realized it wasn't a laughing matter. 4 years have past since then, and i like to think i've matured a lot since those days.

my age doesn't excuse my actions, i just wanted to thank everyone here for helping me close that chapter of my life. i'm not sure when (or even if) i'd change if it weren't for you guys.

What matters is who you've grown into! Its okay to recognize you aren't happy with where you were before, and it's always exciting to know that this community could help you rather than hurt or shun you.

      Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

right! no need to dwell on the past, just gotta keep moving forward and everyone else will too.

it's kinda part of why i decided to come back - not just cuz of the sonic news, but it also just felt like the right time to drop in and let yall know i've been doing great since the 2010s. hope yall have been doing the same!

Good to see you around again. It takes a strong heart to admit to mistakes and that our past selves were perhaps not the greatest. Plenty of people end up taking the antagonistic approach (and a stubborn one, at that) by blaming everyone and the world around them. Always looking for an excuse to never self-assess. It's good that you have, and that this community helped you to do it.

i'll never understand people that can't take accountability honestly. it's so easy to just say "i fucked up, i'm sorry", even 15-year-old me - stupid, petty, emotional, 15-year-old me - could figure it out lmao

  4. it's kinda nice seeing so many people i recognize from the forces days still kicking like nothing's changed. y'all are dedicated and i have a lot of respect for that

sonic twitter posts a video of iizuka writing the word "sonic" on a whiteboard and we all come running back like ravenous farm animals

  6. i've heard a lot of mentions about "Legacy Sonic" in regards to PR talk between lost world and forces, but no one ever explains it and google brings up no results. what's Legacy Sonic

    1. Dr. Detective Mike

      Dr. Detective Mike

It's an incredibly old thing from back in 2015 where we were reaching peak confusion in terms of Sonic's identity with the then new addition of Sonic Boom to the Sonic lexicon. They were throwing out names like Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, Boom Sonic, and then in an interview another name came out called "Legacy Sonic" that just confused a ton of people. Apparently it's just what they call Modern Sonic... which is odd because that's not what they had been referring to him before.

Here's some articles where it was mentioned: http://www.tssznews.com/2015/06/10/aaron-webber-mario-sonic-rio-2016-is-like-what-we-call-modern-sonic/comment-page-1/#comment-297542

  7. So in lieu of the CTR remake coming out soon, I've been playing some Crash through the remakes... Very strange, complicated relationship with this game.

When I'm just playing the game as it's laid out and going level-to-level with no interest in 100%, it's a blast of tight controls and great level design. But the minute I go even slightly out of my way to find secrets like the box gems, it devolves into a tedious nightmare. Suddenly all that great design falls apart, revealing all the warts of poor conveyance, leaps of faith and awkward collision detection underneath.

Is this The Crash Experience? Or am I just weird?

    1. Jingilator

      Jingilator

Oh yeah, this is the Crash Experience alright. Speaking as an inexperienced fan, sometimes just going from level-to-level (especially Crash 1 due to Cash Banooca’s limited moveset) can be a nightmare.

To be fair only a handful of levels in the trilogy do the whole backtracking bit poorly. Honestly getting 100% in those games is no where as bad as trying to 100% complete other platformers during that era.

  8. As much as I'd like to keep being active here - the community here's great, warts and all - I guess my dwindling interest in Sonic has been a bit of a wrench in that plan.

Without getting too melodramatic... I dunno, I just find it hard to be excited or enthusiastic about the series going forward after being burnt so hard in 2017, and the other forum topics don't really interest me that much (what can I say about other topics that hasn't already been said?). For those of you that stayed active here for years despite all the humps and bumps, well, you're stronger than I am.

    1. Scott

      Scott

I wouldn't sweat it bud! It's a series that comes and goes. Last game I got excited about was Mania. Before that? Can't remember.

Been on this forum since like 2005/2006. Account says differently I think because of some server wipe I think it was? Anywho, I myself swing by here and there but I either post a status here or something in the Videogames section.

    2. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

Just take couple years off from the series. And if you return later my suggestion is try to enjoy the series on a more casual level and maybe avoid Sonic fan forums often.... because in my opinion I find that being involved with consistent heated discussions of a media I just want to enjoy ends up kinda ruining my enjoyment of said media sometimes and brings to much unneeded serious feelings for something that is just meant to be entertainment.

    3. Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

      Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

I've always considered myself a casual fan (more or less), so I'm good in that regard. I'll always find time to go back to the games and enjoy them for an hour or two, but... Shit, man. With how up-in-the-air Sonic's future is, and how little his current offerings interest me, I just don't find much incentive to stick around on a board dedicated to talking about it.

It's just one of those "off-years" I kept hearing about I guess, lol

    4. Ferno

      Ferno

I've barely done more besides lurk in the Sonic sections in recent years and have become a Status Update Dweller for the most part. But this place still feels like home to me which is why I continue to stick around even if it's just to check in every so often or slither into motobug streams every now and then.

  9. Random question: Do you think a full 2D Sonic game with a plain-swapping mechanic like in Metallic Madness Act 1 (or for a more fleshed out example, the 3DS Kirby games) would be possible without automating/slowing the game down too much?

I've been thinking about that for a while now for a potential Mania 2 but I feel like it would be difficult to accomplish without sacrificing the pacing and non-linearity that made Mania so good. No one wants to wait around for 2 or 3 seconds as Sonic jumps into the background from a spring or corkscrew or whatever.

    1. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

Waiting for 2 or 3 second as Sonic is launched into the background/back to the foreground is not an issue (it gives the player a chance to relax for a few seconds), but automated level design is. I'm pleased plain-swapping appeared in Mania-I wanted it to appear, but they level-layout could have been better.

    2. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i think it worked well enough in metallic madness, and i can't think of any reason it wouldn't work on a larger scale. they can tighten up the time it takes and launch you with a bit of speed if they feel it needs to be more fluid.

though i'm not sure how much actual benefit there would be to including it; it was a nice one-act gimmick in mania, and the kirby games could take advantage of the 3d effect, but i'm not sure it brings all that much to the table mechanically.

    3. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Then people will be quick to say they're ripping off the 3Ds Kirbys and modern DKCs.

  10. So this is kind of out of the blue, but here's an idea for a Sonic Utopia-esque game I've had on the back of my mind for a while now...

One of the big issues with 3D Sonic is translating the simple control scheme into 3D, right? So what if to start off, all you had was your jump, your Homing Attack and your Spin Dash... But as you play, you unlock "skills" that can be assigned to the face buttons and triggers.

All you really need to beat the game are the good ol' jump and spin, but let's say the double jump is screwing you up and you'd rather have the air dash? How about swapping the Y button out for the Bounce Bracelet, the X button for the Lightspeed Dash, and the bumpers for the Quick Step? Maybe you wanna really challenge yourself and go in with just a Spin Dash on the triggers and an Insta-Shield on all four buttons?

The controls are as simple, or as complicated, as you want it to be. You could have a fully decked out Sonic if that's your thing, but you're putting yourself on a steep learning curve, and it's your responsibility to keep up.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i don't think leaving the problem up to the individual players to solve is a great way of handling this. even though sonic team has struggled with it, sonic gameplay isn't some weird outlier that makes it impossible to design satisfying 3d gameplay, and it's not fair to pass on the responsibility of figuring it out to people who have even less experience designing sonic games.

plus if they don't know what moves the player has available, it's hard to design a level around them. you can't include a mandatory light dash if you can't guarantee that the player can light dash. you don't want to include quick step sections because, even if a player can complete them without it, they likely can't complete them well, and then they feel punished for not using it.

    2. Milo

      Milo

so by "the 3D moveset is too complicated" here in the context of the classic games, are we just referring to 3D games having more than one action button to do every ability at your inherent disposal? designing the 3D games to support every mechanic on only one button like those games is possible but not very practical in concerns to finding and jumping through every hoop needed to do so.

besides, how many of the 3D sonic games frequently (or even occasionally) demand, let alone even allow, for various mechanics to be used during gameplay? unleashed has a light dash, sweeping kick, and a crawl ability but they're pretty much an afterthought (which is obvious with how they were either scrapped or taken out of the moveset with generations). even the mechanics you'll use more occasionally, like the slide, stomp, drift, and quick step; they are only useful for the very specific situations the game tells you to use them for.

  11. Paramount literally does nothing but private screenings for their Sonic trailers and wonders why nobody's enthusiastic for it.

They'll be wondering even harder when it comes out with zero fanfare and bombs.

    2. PC the Hedgehog

      PC the Hedgehog

It's just weird. The movie comes out in November and the only official reveals we really have are two teaser posters and a teaser trailer. No official character reveals, no full trailers despite Paramount clearly having them done and ready...it definitely seems like they're hesitant to reveal anything after all the backlash they've had so far.

      Stasis

The new Annabelle movie trailer came out a few days ago and the movie is out in June. Dora not too long before that and that's out early August. Sonic isn't out until November so there's plenty of time.

  12. It's.... Been a long time. Almost two whole months, as a matter of fact.

As much as I really wish I could stay active here, Discord has pretty much become my online social media of choice at this point. All of my other social medias have tumbleweeds rolling through them, though, so don't take that as a slight at any of you in particular.

I'm alive and well, though, so for all two of you that still remember me don't fret.

    1. Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

      Vertical Snoop [D.K.]

also because all the stuff revolving around TSR and the movie has brought another big ol' wave of negativity back to the community and regardless of how shit they look i don't like wading through this sort of stuff

    2. Sonic Fan J

      Sonic Fan J

Sorry for the negativity but glad to hear that you are doing well and staying engaged with things that keep you feeling happier. Maybe come next year this place will be a lot more positive again or at least past most of the stuff that has everyone riled up right now so that things are more back to normal. Until then take care of yourself and we'll see you around.

  13. Breath of the Wild's been sitting on my Switch since Christmas, but I've yet to touch it (mostly due to being busy with Smash).

Is it alright to play this game when my only prior experience with 3D Zelda is the opening hours of Ocarina (which I didn't really like) and Wind Waker (which I liked a lot but couldn't find the time for)?

    1. ThePrinceOfSaiyans
    2. JezMM

      JezMM

Absolutely, it's pretty different from the games that came before it.  The most significant thing that someone will get out of BotW having played the previous 3D Zelda games is how much it subverts the expectations they gave about what a 3D Zelda game is.  If someone hasn't played much 3D Zelda, then you're just going in fresh without expectations (other than, at this point, how praised the game is lol).

    3. DarkRula

      DarkRula

I had very little gameplay experience of Zelda and loved Breath of the Wild due to how different it was from other games in the series, though it still pays attention to the lore of the world which I felt I got to fully experience.

    4. Maxtiis

      Maxtiis

Given how fundamentally different Breath of the Wild is from previous Zelda games, you can go into it with practically no Zelda experience and still enjoy it. It's probably one of the best ways to get your feet wet with the series to be honest.

  21. So the other day I decided "screw it", and started playing Ocarina of Time. I'm only a few hours in (currently at Zora's Domain) so I can't make a solid opinion yet but, like... Is this really "best game of all time" material?

When you're just traversing through the dungeons, fighting bad guys and taking full advantage of your weapons to find secrets and puzzles, it's an absolute blast - but these moments are few and far between, strung together by monotonous backtracking, vague puzzles and rolling through Hyrule Field hoping to god you're going the right way. You're really testing my patience here, OOT.

Again this is all just first impressions, but please, please tell me this game gets better.

    1. Sean

      Sean

It's an ok game but there are better Zelda (and Zelda-like) games

    2. Diogenes

      Diogenes

      it's really not that great

like, it's an important part of zelda/gaming history and all, and for some people it came at just the right time that it left a permanent impression on them, but other than that...it ain't great.

    3. SenEDDtor Missile

      SenEDDtor Missile

It’s better if you treat it like “best game on N64 of 1997”, because the hype and praise lavished on this game vastly outweighs how well it aged.

    4. Mr Loopone

      Mr Loopone

It's more to do what it did compared to most games back then especially with its targetting system, the problems you found was actually more to do with my experience. There is a lot of backtracking in the game and while I didn't get that far... people have complained about the Water Temple where you have to micromanage throughout the dungeon (unless you have the 3DS version).

Even I found this a bit overrated back in the day, despite not being as technically good preferred Mystical Ninja starring Goemon.

  22. So anyway, moving on from that... Hillenburg.

I never got to watch much of Spongebob on TV (and when I did, it was always season 6 and onwards which I'm not as familiar with), but I did have a massive treasure-trove of DVD's that I watched religiously. I like to think Spongebob, along with The Simpsons, was the biggest influence on my style of humour both in childhood and in adolescence, so while I may not have been too familiar with Hillenburg himself, I owe a lot to him.

Best of wishes to all his family and friends.

  23. Is it bad that whenever an animal gets hurt in a film or an anime or whatever, I'm less concerned about the fictional animal and more about the real animal they got their noises from?

Like, those cries of pain don't just come from out of nowhere, right? The thought of what stuff the team had to do to get those noises really unnerves me for some reason.

    1. JezMM

      JezMM

I mean they're probably stock noises, but even then those can probably be gathered humanely through training, or just outright faked because as long as it sounds close enough, it'll be fine for human ears (this is presumebly why pets rarely react to animal noises coming out of TV shows but will often react to candid pet videos people have posted online even though those tend to have lower sound quality - that's just my guess though, never looked into it).

I'd like to hope they can't put that "no animals were harmed in the making of this film" disclaimer in the credits without being thorough about it.

    2. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

You mean like those stock cat screams when a crash happens in cartoons?

On a similar note, I think that those stock elephant noises used in ever kids all sound like they're extremly pissed off. If I every heard an elephant call in real life, I think it wouldn't be as high and loud.

    3. E-122-Psi

      E-122-Psi

I know SOME of them are owed to good human impersonators. Clarence Nash and Frank Welker for example could do good animal cries.
