  1. The 8th generation of consoles is coming to an end and the only mainline 3D Sonic game we got is Sonic Forces, which looked worse than Unleashed. That's kind sad.

Time well spent on that new engine.

Hoped for better but sort of saw it coming the moment they started downgrading everything back in Gens. Especially became apparent when LW came into play.

Remember when this series actually pushed technical boundaries? This is what happens when people ignore the full package.

I like to rap on Forces for being a bad game, because, well, it is a bad game. But it is graphically superior to Unleashed. There's not a huge margin between them, and the artstyle is Forces is much worse in my opinion. But seriously, the lighting in Forces is much better than in Unleashed. It's not even a competition. And that's before we even get to the subject of performance; Unleashed ran pretty poorly on both of the flagship platforms (PS3/360) whilst Forces runs perfectly on its flagship platforms (PS4/XB1), and even better if on the enhanced hardware revisions/PC. The Switch version of Forces looks like crap because it was a half-arsed port, but even it's more stable than Unleashed PS3/360.

You can always make the argument that Unleashed looked great for a game in 2008, whilst Forces wasn't so impressive for 2017. If the all-new engine is what SEGA worked on for years to get Forces looking the way it does, it looks like they wasted a lot of time. The graphics already aren't amazing and they definitely dropped the ball with rubbish art direction. Forces has the same stiff character models as Unleashed (and arguably look worse with how poorly they're now animated, really dull environments and use of lighting (even the fucking casino in a forest) and pre-rendered, low res cutscenes which feature C&P characters and virtually no movement.

Sadly (or not), when it comes to graphics in Forces, I can't help but think of this lovely scene with all its technical glory:Graphics03b.thumb.png.ac26b3f04838c071cd787959a492bf32.png

I guess art direction speaks louder than DEM GRAPHICS actually. Forces looks so dull and unimaginative at times. The only level I can't say a thing about is Metropolitan Highway, that level looks cool. They really dropped the ball with character animations indeed.

Holy shit, that's some PS2 graphics going on haha

Yeah, Forces is so all over the place, man.

It sucks we only got one main PS4 game. Since they're already working on a new main game it should hopefully hit PS5 early on.

Forces might be graphically superior than the previous generation of Sonic games, but you can hardly even tell any real difference due to the excessive use of old assets, the jumbled use of assets with different art styles (some being from the more detailed/realistic Generations and others being the more simple/stylized Lost World), and said assets not being very high quality to begin with (that scene Tarnish posted is a perfect example).

Forces only really has the graphical edge over Unleashed/Generations and company with the two original zones in Metropolis and the Egg Empire Fortress, which actually are original locations with competently-made new assets. Unfortunately they are dwarfed by both the "new" zones that clearly clones of previous stages (Mystic Jungle, "City" aka Sunset Heights) or straight up returning zones (I don't even need to mention which those zones are).

Lost World is an 8th gen title.

Spending so long on a new graphics engine you forget the essential modules for the type of game you want to actually produce.
