  1. Everytime I play Sonic Mania I feel like droping the game at Oil Ocean Zone. The last quarter of Mania drags.

      Flying Battery and Oil Ocean are definitely the low points for the game, but everything else is pretty good. I have no issues with the last 3 zones.

      Flying Battery is one of my favorite zones. But I can understand the dislike towards OOZ.

      Yeah, for me the sweet spot in 2d Sonic is around 7-8 full zones. I can usually finish Mania and 3&K in a sitting but it can be a little exhausting getting through the last quarter of them.

      personally i feel it's more towards the middle. the game starts great, but stardust speedway and hydrocity are a one-two punch of mediocrity, and the sky chase version of mirage saloon 1 is pretty dull once you're over the gimmick. oil ocean is a reprieve from that, and it only gets better from there to the credits (or egg reverie, which unfortunately kinda sucks).

      i definitely see what they were going for with OO (sprinkling in some not-so-loved zones and "reclaiming" them in a sense) but mannnnnnnn it just Does Not Work. they fixed nothing about what made the original such a slog, they just made more of it.

      i'm surprised how many people don't like FB, though. could've been a bit later in the campaign i think but that's always one of the highlights of a replay for me, especially in encore

      Although I love Press Garden Zone, something about it makes me tune out in a playthrough. Once I get past that, I'm able to push through the rest of the game.

      Stardust Speedway is one of my least favorite levels in all of Sonic. The music is great but I really wish they avoided anything from CD lol. The other stages I can at least somewhat tolerate even if boring, but Flying Battery is also pretty bad. Guess I should be thankful it was stardust and not Wacky Workbench.

      I'm glad we got Metallic Madness just for the sick remixes we got from it of Past and Present. I just wish we'd gotten a Bad Future remix for it's boss just cause I love that song and have always wanted a hard and heavy boss remix of it.

      If I drop the game it's going to be at Mirage Saloon/Hydrocity. Mirage Saloon is dull and while Hydrocity is a perfectly servicable water level it doesn't really live up to the lighting fast pace that makes the original exciting. 

      I enjoy either end of the game beyond that, but that hump in the middle is sometimes difficult to push past.

      Mirage Saloon Act 2 is the high point of the game for me, to contrast.  It's such a fun casino-style pinball stage full of physics toys, I love every second of it - just a shame that it's about 2 minutes long, and, yeah, we only get 1 act of it.  I wish if any zone was gonna be as long as Flying Battery, it was this one instead lol.

      I find the Press Garden/Stardust Speedway/Hydrocity trio my favorite part of the game pretty easily just really fun zones with great esthetic and musical 

      honestly I don’t think mania has a significant enough low point for it to be notable for me like I generally enjoy all the levels Oil Ocean included

      I’m that weird guy that gets bored the moment I enter chemical plant zone act 1 mainly cause I’m more tired of seeing that stage than GHZ but I pull through just to get to the fun stuff. After that the game is nothing but smooth sailing until the final zone.

      I would totally switch Oil Ocean and Flying Battery around (or simply get rid of OOZ altogether lol). I actually got a Time Over in FBZ act 2 the first time I've played it, it's kinda hard for level 4. I'm also not the biggest fan of HCZ and LRZ myself either :0 I love PGZ and SSZ tho', easily the high point of the game for me.

      It's Flying Battery for me. I just feel like the game takes a massive drop from the highs of the first three stages from that point on that it rarely recovers from. The rest of the game never gets bad or anything close mind you but it certainly falls into the same trappings the rest of the classics do for me after that point.

      Which is a shame because there are a ton of neat ideas in those later levels. It's just... I never want to actually play through these levels to get to those specific points lol. MS act 2 is fucking fantastic but do I ever want to actually go through Hydrocity or MS act 1 again? Nah.

      And that's not even going into the bosses which I still think are all mostly not very fun to fight.

      Definitely agree that Flying Battery needed moving to later in the game if they didn't want to tone it down/shorten it a bit. Maybe Studiopolis should've been Zone 2 instead, with Chemical Plant as Zone 3 to prevent two new zones in a row. You'd still have to do some shuffling because Stardust Speedway is a perfect "mid-game" climax that I wouldn't want it shuffled back as well, but I still think Flying Battery is too punishing to be in the first half of the game.

      Getting rid of Sonic 3's saving system would've also helped.  Flying Battery is a mammoth of a stage for beginners and has a really fiddley boss at the end that is possible to OHKO on too.
